You're a true expert and your videos are great to watch and extremely useful. One thing i have to say, having done some cabinet work - you can't beat a trim router and a simple router template to get those hinge recesses done in literally 20 seconds. That's why they round those hinge corners these days. Keep up the great work - these are so much better than some of the other 'diy help' channels out there in TH-cam land!
Just joined as a member. As a fairly green DIY homeowner, I cannot thank you enough for all of your quality videos. Literally any job on the planet is probably on TH-cam somewhere but rarely do folks ever explain the process like you. Thank you again!
Jeff, I wanted to thank you very much for this video. I had to install French doors in my house and you video guided me to complete it successfully. After a long though on the hardware to use I decided to use the roller balls on each door top. I bought two nice lever door knobs because this is for a living room/entrance. I decided not to install the latch (and catch) since I don't need any locking feature. It came out pretty well except for a little rattling sound I couldn't resolve. Now I have to paint it to match the wood color of the floor and the staircase. I have to figure out what kind of paint to use and how to match the color. I subscribed to your channel because I find your explanations very clear and fun to watch. Thanks again!
Just a tip that you may already know. When you are drilling the hole for the handle, as soon as you see the tip of the drill bit come out the other side, take it out and drill from the other side, that way the hole saw won't make the wood/hdf splinter off like it did
If I was using the proper drill I would have been more confident. I was trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it snuck up on me! Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY It wasn't about the proper drill, you said you saw the center bit coming out the other side, should have switched drill sides then. You probably didn't think it would tear out that bad, then oops.
A couple of inputs: 1. Estwing makes a really nice two faced mallet for use with chisel work and for installing door hardware so that there aren't chowder marks left by the dimpled faced framing hammer 2. When the doors are horizontal, stand them up on the long edge and clamp them together for two operations (drilling the ball latch holes and marking the top hinge mortices). This also reminds you to have mirror images for hinges...and please don't ask why I know this is a good idea :-).
Exterior doors for sound proofing. I had French doors installed between my basement office and Theater room. I wanted it to be really quiet so I used wood exterior French doors with windows in them. The benefit in sound dampening having it airtight top, bottom and center is amazing. It was an extra $1000 but totally worth it.

I truly enjoy watching your videos. You have taught me a lot of little tricks of the trade. Sometimes you show a little tip and I go DUH, why did I do It so much harder for 30+ years. Lol. It was comical watching you drill the door knob, using that honker of a drill. Lol. One tip that I could suggest if I may, would be, when the pilot drill popped through the backside of the door, remove the drill bit and start drilling from the other side of the door and that would prevent the massive tear out from the hole saw.
Great detail and explanations. The troubleshooting advice and what-to-look-out-for notes are incredibly valuable. I’ve been procrastinating repairing/replacing a French door in my house, and after watching this I am more informed and confident for the task. Thank you!!
Jeff, I have a really nice hinge kit from Ryobi, that I didn't think I'd like but oh my do I love it. You can adjust it for different thickness doors and it has different inserts for almost every door hing style, so quick and nice with a router.
Doing something as complicated as that with only a little bit of tear out on the inside of the door is still really impressive, and now i feel confident trying this myself and knowing what to try and avoid.
The gap in-between the doors is about perfect, if you install a T Astragal not only will it block the light but it will fill whatever gap there is. Astragals are usually included in French door kits
Looks great, my wife and I wanted to try our hand at french doors leading into the dining room - this will be a great help! Would love to see some information about retrofitting a whole home vacuum system into our house to see if it's worth getting into.
I vote for a central vac system install, too! Would love to see one retrofit to an existing house. And couldn't the lines be run thru an attic in a one story house? (Not under the floor.)
Central vac systems are better left to the 60s/70s when they were a "thing". You could buy 20-30 handheld rechargeable Dyson vacs and get much better cleaning than a central vac system. Technology wins today.
Just about 3 weeks late Jeff! Installed my French doors a few weeks ago and had a dilly of a time. Great info though! Your drywall videos were absolutely perfect though, followed them to the T and the results were great.
How about the clock timer that shows the total elapsed time of each project. Because I'm such a novice, it would actually help me to know if I should tackle one of your video projects or not. Thanks for all you're doing for us DIY'ers down here in the lower 48.
You asked us to post suggestions on what we wanted to see in 2019. I live in a 35 year old house and every ceiling has a popcorn finish. 🙁 I want to start taking it down and have a smooth ceiling. I know this is a big undertaking and I have to do it myself. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated! Looking forward to your new videos!
Is it normal to have a bit of a gap in between the doors? I have about 1/2 gap in between the doors. Also one thing I guess you can doo when installing the top stopper is you can measure the length of the top stopper and measure the same distance on your drill bit and then put a masking tape and when the tape hits the top of the door you know you have drilled far enough. Hope that helps.
I’ve been trying to find the door frame kit like what you used in this video. Any tips on what to look for? I’m not having any luck... might have to make that a DIY project too!
If the gap at the top is not perfect, how can it be corrected? My door on the left is about 3mm low at top center and same spacing between the doors at the bottom. Maybe more shim thickness at bottom and less at top? Jamb is plumb though.
That door knob hole saw, why didn't you stop when the pilot drill cam thru and take the hole saw out and go to the other side and finish the hole from the opposite side?
off my game using that monstrosity of a drill. oh well. anything can be fixed. we left it in the edit to show folks what can go wrong and how to fix it.
I have that Irwin door handle jig. When you drill with the holesaw, stop drilling before you go through the door and drill from both sides and you won't blow out the wood ! :-)
I already have door jams installed and its trimmed. I am look to just buy replacement doors. What size doors do I need to buy and/or how much needs to be shaved off in compared to the rough opening? Great video! thanks for any help in advance.
Please get the Milwaukee door handle install guide it will save you so much time Second when drilling i always drill from 1 side until the center bit pokes trough the other side then I'm finishing off by drilling trough the other side i know u can patch stuff up but 5 seconds switching sides vs lot of time patching and painting
Always awesome video. I’m doing some home remodeling and your videos help a lot. I’m a hands on visual guy. I saw the blow out from the hole saw on the back side of the door. If you just get the center drill bit part through the back then remove the hole saw and drill from the other side placing the center drill bit in the small hole on the back side you won’t have that blow out. Keep the videos coming. One question is this the same basic install for exterior French doors. If not what’s different other than the weather proofing.
If I was using the proper drill I would have been more confident. I was trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it snuck up on me! Cheers!
Yeah it was funny when the camera cut right when you noticed you didn’t have your other drill. Like the humor and all the info you put into all your videos. Great job explaining everything. Look forward to the next one.
In regards to drilling the hole in the door. Isn’t always better practice to start drilling the other side when the drill bit starts to show? Thanks for the really informative videos!!
Yup it is, If I was using the proper drill I would have been more confident. I was trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it snuck up on me!
Thanks for all the through how to's you post great channel. Now that I've watched you do it I'll know to drill through each side of door first before going all the way through to avoid the tear out. So how did you fix that anyway? Some filler putty? Caulking? I swear I probably would have bought a new door lol thanks again for all you do..
If I was using the proper drill I would have been more confident. I was trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it snuck up on me! Cheers! I used a little flat oil to prime and then 45 cgc compound to repair. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I couldn't resist! I just love a sexy Frenchman wearing a tool belt who can build things! LOL If you get anymore talented, I don't think my heart can take it!

Yes a bigger door is better in say a Rec Room and you need to move a Treadmill thru the door. In our case with the door off it was 29.5" wide. Not enough to get Treadmill thru the door. We wanted to have the door open outwards because of room setup there was no way to have the door open inwards, it would hit furniture. So I took the top and side jambs out and was left with a 32" x 82" opening. Narrowest part with Treadmill in up position was just a bit over 32" wide. So it was just a matter of pushing Treadmill on Dilley thru the door turning to one side slightly thru the door and at one point tilt the top part to fit thru. Don't ask me how we ever get the thing out again. The other door in the room goes to the garage and with the big heavy door taken off, it is 32" wide. Front door with door off is 36" wide, didn't really want to push treadmill outside and then infront around to garage and then into that 32" wide door. Why is my roughed in opening 32" x 82", I thought 32" x 80" was standard? It goes have tile floor in the hallway. Do I set the new door jambs as if it was 80" high opening? And fill in the other 2"? Jeff any tips when going out to buy the new jambs and door? Build that yourself or get a pre-hung door? Wife wants a single French door with the glass. Those glass doors are expensive. Is it worth trying to sell the old door frame and door with it? Technically it would be a pre-hung door. It is a little beat up from moving furniture in and out. Jeff the old jambs had the stops milled into the jamb. Is that normal? The old jamb was real wood but was finger jointed pieces.
you can buy doors that are 78 or 80 inches high. the opening all depends on which height. in my area 80" doors are standard so 82 rough is also! Cheers Paul!
I have an existing finished opening in my home, where I would like to add french doors. Should I remove the drywall and expose the framing, or can I install the doors against the drywall?
a good tip for you to add was to drill from both sides when make the knob hole (your jig should keep it perfectly lined up with a proper drill haha) and then you wouldn't get any tear-out
If I was using the proper drill I would have been more confident. I was trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it snuck up on me! Cheers!
Any possibility you could do a video on replacing existing closet doors with newer modern doors. I have bi-folds everywhere and hate them - want the proper door (single or double), but not sure what to do about the 1" drywall overhang that surrounds the existing bi-fold doors to hide the outside gap. This is the finished edge of the wall - do I cut this so that it's rough edge and flush with the opening of the closet and then follow this video - or do I leave it and tuck the door framing behind it? I'm sure it's a stupid question - just haven't found a good example of how to do it properly on You Tube.
Hi Jeff, love your work... hey, I'm replacing a sliding door set installed in new construction 1993. Replacing with new French double doors. Do I need to reflash the bottom? I haven't taken anything apart yet.. trying to get everything ready before I start in a couple days. It's a preying door from Lowes.
Hi Steve, in 93 there were very few places that did flashing as a part of standard practice. best to have the materials on site and return them if not needed. Cheers!
I’d like to see a video in-depth on how to sharpen a chisel my chisels aren’t that sharp ever! As well a video or even a series on what tools you find yourself using every single day in day out what’s your go tool aresonal?
Hi RenoVision crew, was curious if you have any details on that jamb-kit to share, like brand or a store where purchased? I understand that you guys are in Canada and as we all know eeeeeeverything is so different in a land far far away ... USA. I have tried searching but did not got much success. Interestingly enough I am starting a project on Monday where I could use that instead building one my self and finagling with hinges etc. Thanks a bunch in advance. 👽
Love the series! I have a framed doorway to a formal living room measuring 70". If I want to add doors, should I trim doors and hang them in the existing frame or take the trim down, hope I find a couple inches behind it and get a standard 6 foot prehung door? Thanks!
Hahhaa...awesome video! I want French Doors now...but there's only 3 doors inside my house LOL. If you get the opportunity can you do a video on changing a standard hung bedroom door to a rolled barn door? Or how about a hidden bookshelf door leading into a bedroom. Those are my next two door projects.
There is a tool to make the round corner hinge cutouts into a square. It is a small "L" shaped chisel set into a block. A tap with a hammer sets your square corner.
I enjoyed this video. I have question - My door has a door closer and 2 days ago the door is not fitting, after a quick investigation the hinges, some of the screws are loose. This was done by my father in law years ago and I want to do it the right. What do you think I should do?
If you can hang a french door, then you can hang one in any language! Cheers!
lmao
Thanks for the KISS. Keeping it simple stupid.

tip from a carpenter, when the pilot bit pokes out the other side, finish drilling from the other side to prevent breakout
This is the easiest solution. Another is to clamp a scrap piece of wood onto the backside to prevent blowout and patching later on

Caulking? I swear I probably would have bought a new door lol thanks again for all you do..

snuck up on me! Cheers! I used a little flat oil to prime and then 45 cgc compound to repair. Cheers!
Thanks, great video!
Cheers Bill!

Love this channel, so much info.
Thank you Julie, we appreciate the comment. Cheers!
I love this video, I thought you were going to do it all with French accent..
I was
trying to find the right moment since it took almost 5 mins. But it
snuck up on me! Cheers!
Thank you so much my dear friend
I am waiting for your videos
Cheers, we have another one tonight.
Love how you work
Great video!! Recently used it to install new french doors in our house. Do you have any tip on how to deal with slightly warped doors ?
using the self center hinge bit would be faster for hinge and other similar hardware installation. thanks
true, but this shows how anyone can do the job for 20 bucks worth of chisel. And it is a great tool to have in the arsenal.Cheers!
You are amazing
Thank you for your quality video!
Cheers Leonard!
Thanks!
buy 2 doors and take 1/2 inch off each side of each door. Cheers!
In the UK, we have pre-hung doors, so all you do is slap the frame in and hang the door on the hinges, boom. I'm drinking a French Beer.
Hahhaa...awesome video! I want French Doors now...but there's only 3 doors inside my house LOL. If you get the opportunity can you do a video on changing a standard hung bedroom door to a rolled barn door? Or how about a hidden bookshelf door leading into a bedroom. Those are my next two door projects.
we have a barn door video. best to use the search tool for that one.
Hi Lester, best to disengage the closer and then add new wider and longer screw. Cheers!
