    Thanks for the great tips👍 sometimes I run some antifreeze thru mine. If not, compressed air while turning the engine over. I do buy regular, non ethanol for the majority of my equipment and shut off fuel/run carb dry on everything fitted with a valve each use. I also love 100ll avgas for storage and have a couple tools/toys that often sit for months at a time that get a steady diet of it! None have catalyst exhaust. Looked like some good ol' fun exploring!

    All very good tips I wished I’d have known on my first pressure washer ☹️. I’ve read some articles that have said undiluted antifreeze will freeze at temps not much lower than water. Also modern coolants have lubricants in them that I would imagine help keep the seals pliable.

    Have you ever tried the sta-bil pressure washer pump protector?? It’s an antifreeze and lubricant in a pressurized can! It has a hose that threads on the water inlet and you press the nozzle until it shoots out the outlet! 1 can last 3-4 seasons!

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't. Automotive antifreeze is specifically designed to lubricate the metal on metal bearings of the water pump, preserve all rubber parts (radiator hoses) and fight corrosion from dissimilar metals (brass, aluminum, steel). My only issue with the little canister ones is if you don't rotate the pump/engine at the same time as you're injecting it you can bypass one or two of the three pistons of the triplex pumps.

    • @eugene5438
      @eugene5438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny... today I tried this stuff for the fist time. I shot it in a few times and rotated the engine to try to get it all around in the pump. I've had the same pressure washer and pump for 10 years, and never did anything in the winter. Even when I was living in Alaska, but I have always kept it in the garage. Didn't know I was supposed to winterize it until recently. Guess I was just lucky. But this year I learned of the sta-bil spray so I thought I would give it a try. I want to get as many years out of this pump!

    • @dontblameme6328
      @dontblameme6328 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose made pump protector stuff in a can is 100x more expensive and doesn't do anything more than automotive antifreeze.

    I have always used the pump conditioner in a can to winterize the pump, but never knew about the unloader valve. Great info! The tip about turning the engine to TDC compression is good, too. Dad taught me that one.
    On the never ending debate about carbs and fuel stabilizers, I learned long ago there are two schools of thought. Either leave everything dry for winter, or treat the fuel and leave everything wet. When wet, the seals and gaskets stay supple. When dry, there is no chance for the fuel to separate and cause issues.
    I tend to run things dry on small engines, and leave things wet and treated on larger stuff like classic cars, boats, etc. So far, so good. I learned about this stuff while working at a very busy marina, where we had everything from tiny two-stroke outboards to twin-engine big block racing boats.
    Also, non-ethanol blended fuel still has a bunch of additives that can separate out over time. I try not to leave it in metal fuel tanks, only plastic. And I add some stabilizer every time. A little Star Tron goes a very long way.

    • @sixtyfiveford

      Last month I was cleaning out the shed of stuff I haven't found a use for. I pulled a 14hp Kohler engine off the shelf I put away dry 11 years ago. I ran it completely dry then. I put gas in it and pulled it 3 times and fired right up. Idles great, full throttles great and runs perfectly just like when I put it away. I did this all in front of the a guy that came out to purchase it as he didn't believe an engine sitting that long wouldn't need major service. He paid me full asking price.
      In my experience/environment Fuel stabilizer only helps for 6month storage and even that's pushing it. Stabilizer only works on indoor stored equipment with minimal temperature swings. Stuff left outdoors, stabilizer works for maybe 3 months with Ethanol free. I only store stuff dry anymore if I don't plan on starting it in under 6months. And that stuff I do start at 6 months gets the old fuel dumped out and new fuel added(chainsaws are about the only thing I do this with).

    I have put a 2 stroke mix in at end of season .. Never had an issue using 2 stroke oil as stabilizer personally , even years later a bit of chem 12 in next gas to clear any residual oil .. The gas don't break down the same mixed 2 stroke , not to mention it helps lube valves . No I don't run it that way , just to winterize and storage , an dry starts on long sitting engines .

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just unbolt the part of the pump that you remove to replace the o rings. That guarantees there's no water in it and you can check that the o rings are still ok at the same time. Sometimes I keep the pump part inside where it won't freeze but if all the nooks and crannies are visible when removed then there's no way it can be damaged by ice.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that the automotive antifreeze helps against corrosion especially on aluminum pumps. Simply the humidity in the air can corrode some of those sometimes.

    Adding oil to cylinder is not a bad idea in long time storage. Humidity will find its way to the valves.
    Oil prevents valve and seat corrosion.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with putting engine oil down the cylinder is it'll just run past the piston rings anyway. So in a few days to a week the engine is in the exact same condition it was before you put the engine oil in the cylinder. Fogging oil is better, but requires you nearly choking out the engine while it's running to give a good coating.

      No gas=no problems in my opinion. I just rebuild a carburetor today for someone with the brand new snowblower they bought in March. They ran it once and went to start it yesterday and it was completely gummed up. Fuel of today with 10% ethanol is rated to last 90 days in a sealed pressure container (car gas tank) and only around 30 days in an open fuel container (gas tank on any small engine). Ethanol free gas is about the same but doesn't have ethanol which is hydroscopic and pulls in any moisture in the air.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pump consists of 6 one way check valves. In the 1st stage 3 check valves allow tap water to pass and then hold the tap water back so the motors pistons can compress it. In the 2nd stage other 3 allow the compressed tap water to flow past and then it holds the pressurized water between them and the gun trigger. I would suspect the first stage check valves are being help open with debris.
      The check valves are super basic plastic housings with a small spring holding a mushroom shaped valve closed. It is possible that a calcium removing cleaner would break up whatever it holding it open but generally it's best to just open it up and manually clean everything.
