When the winter is over and it’s time to use the pressure washer again how do you get the antifreeze out? Is the anti freeze going to ruin any surface if you forget it’s in there and you go to wash your house or patio in the spring? Btw this is brilliant…great video

Such a simple and easy method of protecting the pump! I live in a warm climate and never have to winterize it. You didn't mention it in your video, but I presume you pulled the plug to 1) make it easier to pull the cord, and 2) to keep the engine from starting up.

My manufacturer recommends winter windshield washing fluid which is more available and probably cheaper.
Does the antifreeze do anything for the piston seals, or is the freeze protection all that's necessary for preserving the life of the pump?
Yes. Its a lubricant too. Its the same as buying the really expensive pump protectant. Except its only about $2.50 a gallon compared to that high dollar little bottle. There are lots of TH-cam videos about this and many mechanics recommend antifreeze as a lubricant
@@JM-nh8yp That's good to know! My washer is going to be stored in a climate control but I was wondering about lubricant for the pump. I plan to fog the entire before storing too.

I just went to use my pressure washer and the manifold before the pump is leaking. It must have cracked during a deep freeze last winter. Uggghhh $120 part

I've tried this for a couple years and mine will not draw low pressure fluid into the pump. It has to be under hose pressure for anything to go through the pump. I might have to put an air hose behind it to push the antifreeze in
Same problem here...Gonna try to put some compressed air into the hose and see if that works.
@@MrNoodles419 I just had a similar idea yesterday. I have a hose connector for my camper to winterize it, that blows air through the plumbing. So I hooked a bicycle pump to that connector on the garden hose, after I poured the antifreeze in. It worked perfectly. I just pulled the handle while I pumped the foot pump and also pulled the rope starter a few times.
It’s technically not low or no pressure as he has it higher than the pump. But you could try the squeeze bottle you can buy.
Have you tried running the washer without the pressure hose connected until it starts to pump water, then switch off and connect up ?

I have a 20 year old Karcher that leaked last summer. I evacuated the system every autumn, without any problem, until the year it didn't work no more. The replacement part costs $75 bucks. I only paid $150 for the machine.

RV type is only $2.70 at the local walmart but the auto type should work
Things to consider: Automotive antifreeze is toxic. Can only be used in automotive cooling systems. RV antifreeze doesn't have those restrictions. It's even safe to use in RV drinking water supply lines.
@@danburch9989, things to consider: I HAVE auto antifreeze, and don't have to drive or spend money to winterize, IF it will work. I know it will work, but would like to know that it won't damage pump parts.
@@dBsound100 It won't damage any seals no,. i'd like to add that the active ingredient is either Ethylene or propylene Glycol. Ethylene is the toxic one.

I would on both Items you mentioned, alcohol is not good for any small motors. I buy non alc for all the small stuff and my three boats i have. Run till it stops or crack the bowl drain and get it out.
There is a bottle you can buy one made by karcher another made by an off brand exactly for this. About 7-10$. It has a hose fitting end and is reusable. This is definitely a good way to do it too.

What if anything must you do when you go to use the pressure washer in the spring? Is it bad for the antifreeze to run through the hose to the gun? Do you need to flush the antifreeze?

same process in reverse. hook up your water hose, turn on the water, and the anit freeze will pump out.

What do you think of the pump preserver available commercially? Apparently it has lubricant in it to keep the seals in good shape. I think it also has anti-freeze in it.

Air doesn't displace water. Warm, dry air might work but would take time to evaporate all the water.

What about electric pressure washers? There's no pull cord to cycle it through.
First empty the fuel and let it run dry of fuel first...another 5 minutes,,,,

Great video question is I was just going to use regular radiator fluid that I have in the garage why couldn't you use that?
Why would you need a quick release fitting and adaptor. just connect the garden hose to the pump. I can see you spilling a little antifreeze when you take it off. just catch it with a red plastic cup and save the leftover back in the Jug. what am i missing .

I’ve benn doing this for years. Just start the motor for 5 seconds.
I thank you that was simple. I also treat my fuel with Sta-bil or the like and run for a few minutes to get it in the carb. Makes for good starts come spring.
They sell stuff specifically designed for pressure washer pumps. Screws right into the fitting. Blows the water out, and leaves pump protectant in the pump.
Now that’s what I needed to see. The hose with the funnel. I thought I need to get one of those fancy bottles. I can just grab an old piece of hose and c-clamp a funnel.

This may be a silly question but do leave that hose and funnel connected all winter? Or do you just disconnect it and be satisfied with knowing antifreeze worked its way though?
Anyone ever use windshield washer fluid to do this? Seems it would serve the same purpose.
They sell Pump saver it comes in a can you hook it to the inlet squeeze a couple times and you’re done

Hook this aerosol can to the water inlet of the pressure washer and give it a squirt until it comes out of the outlet fitting and ur done.
That stuff is extremely expensive and I would never buy that. Antifreeze does the exact same thing it's a lubricant and antifreeze all in one and you can buy for about $2.50 a gallon

Great question. I should answered that in the video, but yes, it would be the same process for an electric pressure washer. The pumps are quite similar across the two versions. The only difference is that you'd briefly (very briefly) turn the pump ON and OFF to cycle the anti-freeze through the system. You might find it interesting that many (perhaps even most) pressure washer pumps and wands are made by the same company in Italy, then used by different manufacturers of the entire pressure washer units.

Maybe you should put out a video on that but if you don’t have an electric one for demonstration that would be kind of tough! I appreciate your response. What gauge hole for a plug weld? Too small and you hit the walls, too big and you waste wire... the thickness of the metals affects it, but what's a general starting point?
