@@sarahsimpkins1311 it is a great movie with several poignant messages… with some comedic aspects. It’s ok if you missed that, just as it’s ok that some of us didn’t. At the end of the day, we all enjoyed it and caught the messages. I think that’s what counts 🙂
As someone that works in public school, the part of this movie that sticks with me is the mother that is so focused on getting Joe fired. Some parents give their child every excuse. I've seen children hit other kids, refuse to do work, disrespect several teachers, and their parents really come to the school acting like everyone else is the problem. I'm a sub teacher on my way to becoming a full-time teacher and people like this are my worst fear.
I know that I am a year late with this comment, but I want to thank you for your statement as, sadly, it still rings through. That mother in this movie, Leonna Barrett, played brilliantly by the late and great Lynne Thigpen is a very real and frightening character that teachers still encounter to this day. There are parents like her who care more about getting what they want than what is in the best interest of the students and the school. Heaven forbid you discipline their child or try to enforce consequences for something the child did, and those parents will instantly come for you and look to get you fired. Sometimes, reinforcing discipline or consequences has nothing to do with it. There are parents who may wish to carry out a vendetta against a teacher merely because their child did not get elected as class president, did not get chosen for the school’s baseball team, or did not get the lead in the school musical. Even more frightening is that those parents will do whatever they can to get what they want, whether that is try to bully or bribe their way onto the school board, painstakingly look for any minor infraction that you may have made and try to blow it up to ridiculous proportions, or straight up concoct and spread false information about you in order to defame your character. Unfortunately, these are the same parents who let their children run wild at home, letting them do whatever they want, eat whatever they want, dress however they want, and hurt whoever they want. These parents are busy living out the misguided mantra “as long as my child is happy” while they are too full of themselves to see that they are really setting up their child for failure.
Man this movie hits different as an adult! Especially having worked in some of the worst high schools in my area, I worked with the kids that were involved with drugs, homeless and addicted parents, and pregnant teens. My perspective changed mostly about parenting and just how much a dysfunctional home affects childrens behavior at school. Some of my students only came to school just to eat.
One thing that one of my sons' teachers told me that sticks with me is that sometimes a child's behavior is bad but that doesn't mean they are a bad child. Kids need support, attention, and redirection when they mess up. A lot of kids don't have that, unfortunately.
The thing that always bothered me about her, if you had so much power to the point where you could have a private conference with the mayor, why hadn't you used that power before to help the school before it reached the point of calling in Mr. Clark

East Side High should have never gotten rid of Joe to begin with especially after what the school became after he left. Joe was better than me. I would have been petty and kept my ass at that nice elementary school like, "nah bruh, y'all got rid of me, remember? Now, y'all want me to come back because the school is failing." "I don't have to do nothing but stay black and die." I love that line.

Ironically..... these days, you CAN NOT get on most high school campuses w/o passing security AND buzzing in thru more security plus showing your Id AND being in the files..& thats just to pick up you own child..they worried about chains back then lol
This is one of my favorite movies. I wore it out growing up. This movie being this honest could not be made today and that is sad. I also love the reworked school song.
There are definitely Mr. Clarks in school. I remember when I was in a middle school where kids fought everyday and we had metal detectors just to go into school in the early 2000s. Then in 7th grade we got a principal and her name was Dr. Berry and when I say she turned that school around so fast to make your head spin. Back then, if you fought it was in school suspension or an accompanied suspension so kids’ parents would just bring them back to school the next day. When she came, any kid caught fighting for any reason got an automatic 10 days in the street, no exceptions. And that includes if you fought at the bus stop. When I tell you that those kids did t want any smoke with that lady or their parents… we actually passed our standardized testing that year and they always used to play this movie for us. Lol
I remember attending a school like this. The first 3 months was okay but then months later, I started receiving intense bullying from both girls and boys all because they thought I was ugly, fragile or they believed a rumor that I was a lesbian. I can clearly remember the day I got jumped in the locker room by five girls all because I chose to stand up for myself and fight back. Every single day, I would hope and pray for the last day to come, that way I would finally be free enough to transfer to another school.
I loved this review. Especially your thoughts on Lynne Thigpin's character in your "Final thoughts" where you pointed out how she didn't care about the students nor the fact that Joe Clark turned that whole school around for the better because she was too focused on trying to tear him down because her feelings were hurt. Glad I'm not the only one who saw it that way to. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We called my high school principal the white Mr. Clark. Mr. Karcich did not play. He was not a principal who sat in the office. He was up and down the hall aisles, and stood at least 6’5. Knuckleheads did not scare him, even if you were from the hood. He would take your baseball cap if you were wearing one, would bust up your Spades game if you were playing during study hall, stood by decisions to remove kids from the school who had no interest in going to classes but were just there. He also knew our names, was at school games, and essentially helped set a new tone for the school before I got there. My older cousin said the school was similar to east side high until he got there. You were the best, Mr Karcich! I’m sure you saved a lot of us. You cared.
Happy New Year! Your content is everything I look for in a movie recap/ review. 1) give me the play-by-play with clever commentary and laughter, pointing out the interesting or funny parts not noticed on the 1st watch. 2) show clips to help remind us of the cast. You do the same thing i do. When someone plays a certain role, i call them that name forever😄 Your voice is calm and sweet, like discussing the movie with a friend. You've hit the right formula and I know your channel will continue to grow as more people find out about it.
My highschool principal Mr. Reddick and my middle school principal Mr. Mackey were real deal the greatest principals ever they made a HUGE different in our lives and the whole schools fr they were like dad figures they honestly care about us and our well-being and success. Have you watched Caught Up? It's a good one.
When I moved to Philly in 7th grade I was nervous asf coming from the South bc I thought all schools up north were like his 😭 SN: I was fortunate to have grown up when & where I did bc although our teachers didn’t go around hollin like Mr Clark all the time lol we knew they cared. Well 🤔 except for Mr. Knight who always used to bellow when he caught us in a lie, “if you lie, you’ll cheat, if you cheat you’ll steal, if u steal you’ll kill and if you kill 🗣️ you GO TO JAIL!! “ lol
I really enjoyed listening to this. I dig your background music, your even voice, and your informative content. I am a teacher so I appreciate the shout out. Thank you.

Those hoods and drug dealers corrupted that whole entire school and if he put that evil wretch’s son out of school it must been for a reason and what’s did she expected that he wasn’t going to do anything he did an amazing job getting that school back in order good for you Mr. Joe Clark ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾👍🏾👌🏾

Mrs Webb- 5th grade English teacher that bought books for her class library based on my interests because I loved reading. She encouraged my poetry and thought process when everyone else saw me as not worth it. Mrs Alexander my 8th grade English teacher who was honest enough to allow me to question everything including the class silibus and various answer keys. Told me several times that I had correctly answered my assignments but that she had to count them incorrect due to the answer key being also wrong and majority of students getting it wrong as well. She bought books again with me in mind and encouraged me to always speak up. I had a different miss Alexander as an art teacher my freshman year of high school. When my mother kicked me out the house she made sure I was taken care of and even offered to let me stay with her while I got on my feet. I worked, was in band, jrotc, and several AP classes. She didn’t want anything to hold me back. miss Kelly an older teachers aid from Elementary who always allowed me to talk with her above my age range. Encouraged me to read highschool and college level books if I wanted to. Use vocabulary as I wanted to and actually took my thoughts serious instead of just cute stuff kids say. Mrs Hernandez my 8th grade history teacher who encouraged me to be smart even if I was the smartest in the room, and I know how that sounds. I loved ancient history and therefore knew more than many students when it came to certain topics. People didn’t like it so I never spoke up but she’d always call on me. I’d help grade papers with her and she’d talk to me about how I could get to where I wanted to be in life. She’s also the person that became my counselor in high school that within 3hrs found me a free place to stay/paid internship/free transportation/ and further scholarship assistance the day my mom kicked me out the house. To this day I love that woman and speak when I see her. 3 teachers with the same name (had two of them). All three were science teachers in middle school. 6/7/8 which is crazy but that’s what it was. The 7th grade science teacher allowed us to have our own thoughts. She didn’t get made when we questioned the Big Bang theory. She explained it to us and then agreed when we said it still didn’t make sense and sounded like a lie. She told us that while we were correct in our thinking we still had to answer the questions the way the state wanted not with the truth. It frsutrated us but she was honest and told us how the world and school really worked. She was actually 25 at the time and grew up in the area so many had her as their youth group leader at church. The other one further told us how college works and told us the tricks that no one wanted us to know. Let us know how our school had different expectations than the other side of town let us know about the quotas….. they both got in trouble for telling us these things but kept their job because we and the parents loved them and their honesty. Every single one of these people played in role in me staying away from the streets and gangs and they didn’t even know it. I was suicidal in elementary school and almost attempted those teachers who allowed me to finish my work early and read in class for 30min straight, let me take home books, let me write poetry in class and then give me feedback on how to improve literally saved my life. All while other teachers actually bullied me in front of students for being a know it all or overweight. There’s some good one but there aren’t many in my experience. These teachers never knew there was anything wrong with me. My mother used to punish me for “listening to white people” instead of her. I didn’t want to get involved in certain illegal activities and she hated it. Like I was rejecting her and “our culture”…. My sister has one of these teachers now and I’ve seen her fight on my sisters behalf because schools now are straight garbage and don’t care.
My elementary School principal Mr Luse was like this demanded respect and also gave respect, kinda like a Father. All tho I did get suspended a few times but after he didn't just treat me differently. He was a good principal but middle school and high school principals were just collecting checks.
Gratitude. Ps I saw this movie in the Theater when I was 6 years young. My maternal grandmother took me. She was a teacher at a tough school so she empathized with Joe Clark aka Batman. Pps Tough love used to work. In 2023 Tough love will get you sued. Ppps New Jersey is no joke.
Mrs Barrett was the type of person that makes excuses for criminality and allows communities to suffer under the guise of falsehoods. Terrible person and obviously her own child reflected her status as a parent-- so she says the kids are dealing drugs and beating people nearly to death because of hopes being smashed about the future they have for themselves? So as a parent what was she doing to ensure her own child's better upbringing and options.... like Mr. Clarke? Nowhere to be found. These types are so annoying.
Wasn’t that the group troop singing in the bathroom? And maybe if ol girl wasn’t going around the world looking for Carmen she could pay attention to her kid.

Ironically..... these days, you CAN NOT get on most high school campuses w/o passing security AND buzzing in thru more security plus showing your Id AND being in the files..& thats just to pick up you own child..they worried about chains back then lol
Your description of the beginning of the movie had me in stitches 😅😅😅
This is one of my favorite movies. I wore it out growing up. This movie being this honest could not be made today and that is sad.
I also love the reworked school song.
‘You smoke crack don’t you “ 😂😂😂
I watched this film with Pop Pop a couple years ago. I barely remember this movie aside from Mr. Clark’s conversation with Sam.
I'm sorry you were treated like that.
So glad I found this channel! You make me wanna watch the movies all over again to pay attention & view w a different POV! I love this channel!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
That “Thumbs Up” in the montage shot always gets me😂. Straight Chedder.
Loyalty loyalteeeeeee be in my head for the rest of the day!! 🤣🤣🤣
I was singing that the whole time I was editing 😂😂
We need the Mr. Clarks of the world back. These kids today are out of control.
You cared.
👍🏾
Happy New Year! Your content is everything I look for in a movie recap/ review. 1) give me the play-by-play with clever commentary and laughter, pointing out the interesting or funny parts not noticed on the 1st watch. 2) show clips to help remind us of the cast. You do the same thing i do. When someone plays a certain role, i call them that name forever😄 Your voice is calm and sweet, like discussing the movie with a friend. You've hit the right formula and I know your channel will continue to grow as more people find out about it.
Thank you 😊. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!!!
East Side High is as bad as it was before Clark. Academically it’s worst.
Child, i am just now noticing Chris Moltisanti @5:41 😆
When I moved to Philly in 7th grade I was nervous asf coming from the South bc I thought all schools up north were like his 😭
SN: I was fortunate to have grown up when & where I did bc although our teachers didn’t go around hollin like Mr Clark all the time lol we knew they cared. Well 🤔 except for Mr. Knight who always used to bellow when he caught us in a lie, “if you lie, you’ll cheat, if you cheat you’ll steal, if u steal you’ll kill and if you kill 🗣️ you GO TO JAIL!! “ lol
Not Candy man supposed to be at Cabrini Green 😂
I really enjoyed listening to this. I dig your background music, your even voice, and your informative content. I am a teacher so I appreciate the shout out. Thank you.
You blew my mind with the Lovecraft actress lol look at her still in the game
Ms. Elliott was the original Karen 😂
I'm in my 30s and I had a great public school system in PG County Maryland however currently it leaves alot to be desired in regarding teachers. looking back I did notice some issues that you will deal with regardless of what school system you are in public or private.
Even the DC school crazy I met Pg gang ✊🏿
Lol never noticed chris moltisanti in full mullet at 5:41
“ first. Pew. Ready !” 😂😂😂😂😂
When it tell you i havent watched this movie since it was wheeled out on that big tv on that cart in school😂😂 so this definitely a trip to watch at our BIG AGE 😭😭also happy new year may your channel continue to grow 💃🏿💃🏿🎉🎉
Those were the times 😔. And half the time we were watching movies that were NOT appropriatefor school. Whole 8th graders watching Friday in class smh... Happy new year!!
When you realize that Principal Clark's biggest hater shot Batman.
Sam will ALWAYS be Steele & Frank will ALWAYS be Benson to me. 🤣🤣🤣
The loudest parents be the worst parents.
Yup.
Wait did anybody else not realize that was Tony from the bodyguard😭😭 and when he said he didn’t have to do nothing but stay black and die I fwi because he knew them kids had his back just like he had theirs and said please f**k out my face and leave my kids alone 😂😂
I saw a video about some kids who were not allowed into to graduation and their parents sound exactly like this video.
yay this made my day thanks for the consistency......Homegirl was tripping...question can I request
A thin line between love and hate"? I would love to hear your recap on that movie and who you thought was right or wrong....Im team Brandy lmao
I would love to do that one. I'm team Brandy as well because she told his ass what was up but he thought it was a joke.
No, too many parents would be ready to sue and students have no sense of fear, failure or accountability anymore.
7:00 she's supposed to be looking for Carmen San Diego
😄🤣 She was in Carmen Sandiego!! Thats why her voice was so familiar to me
Wrong. Students DO have a sense of fear, failure, and accountability.
Parents are not ready to sue
Yes, I work for 1 who's tough when he needs to be, but he's also fair and he loves the children at his school.
I love this channel! So glad I stumbled on it. I enjoy your commentary.
Me, my brother and our cousins were extras in this movie. It was shot at East High, you have to understand that ALL that graffiti was set design to make it look sooooo bad. They shad kids from all over Jersey...We were paid 75.00 plus lunch...
How cool!!! I bet that was such a fun experience.
@@forthenostalgia It was, my mother, became friends with one of the Make-Up artists. Everyone was so excited and felt honored. If you want to see "where we were" in the upper balcony in the scene, he kicked out all the misfits' LOL....and another assembly scene I can't quite remember (Phew, I am turning 50 this year...damn like yesterday LOL)
Cool 😎! It's great you got paid and got lunch. I thought that extras didn't get paid.
Your commentary and words you put on the screen!!! I’m hollering 😂😂
Imma be honest if they woulda just kept him in the beginning the school wouldn’t have turned to a shit show 😭 cause as an adult they had my head spinning I could never work with them bad ass kids 😂😂
Joe Clark reminded me of my grammar school principal, who was also my high school principal....minus the bullhorn.
Lmfaooo ngl he’s the type of principal that will be on your ass REAL BAD but will joke around with you
Another 🔥vid!! I love this movie, and your commentary was on point per usual!
Thank you 🙂. Thanks for watching!!
I don’t have to do nothin but stay black and die”
I’m stealin that ✊🏾☠️
Peep 6:01 that’s Michael Imperolli Christopher from the Sopranos on stage
I recognize those eyebrows anywhere. 🤣
So true.
Miles from Soul Food always messing up when you see him in movies.
He's the bougie Samuel Monroe Jr. You see in hood movies that always starting stuff
Yup.
I'm a teacher and I thank you for your appreciation. Great review!
I love this channel, picking some good movies. Keep the videos coming sis! ❤
Thank you so much 🤗
Gosh this movie is still amazing
Wasn’t that the group troop singing in the bathroom? And maybe if ol girl wasn’t going around the world looking for Carmen she could pay attention to her kid.
😂😂😂😂 Carmen Sandiego!
The songbirds in the bathroom (minus crackhead Sam 🤣) was the group Riff. Their most recognizable songs songs are "My Heart is failing Me" and "If You're Serious".
Excellent video! I love the way you broke down how Joe Clark bad ego comparison to Ms Barrett
