Shame how Fujin’s chapter ironically had the most progress in Netherrealm story telling by introducing more features that weren’t even in the base MK11.
More story mode fights in Netherrealm games need small gimmicks since those can make fights much more memorable. Some of the best fights in fighting game story modes are due to these gimmicks in my opinion. Personal favourite are the Ragna vs Hazama and Jin vs Tsubaki in Blazblue Continuum Shift. Even something small like letting the opponent have access to all their gear specific supers, not letting the player character use fatal blows or crushing blows if they’re supposed to be a good guy or just general power boosts for the enemy.
You do actually have to run from Fujin before he explodes in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero or you die as well; so maybe it was a LITERAL reference; as well as a statement. Just a thought.😉 Good video.👍
I had always assumed that Fujin told Bi-Han he "ran away" because if I remember correctly you did have to run to one side of the stage and grab onto a rock or ledge to not get sucked into Fujin's death tornado. So he technically did run away in some capacity, but it's still huge cope on Fujin's part

Gods in MK can be affected by time restarting, just not time alteration. Kronica has reset time more than once, and Raiden never realized it despite being the one to screw with time so much she finally stepped in.
I always thought so. According to Ed boon tho, the kameo mechanic was originally everyone having some sort of assist weapon like Cassie’s Robot. But also, there’s a hidden mk9 tag mode that’s not fully fleshed out hidden in MK1. it’s possible some combination of these two or three ideas led to the kameo mechanic

Honestly I do like how Raiden and Fujin are close brothers and hope Kitana and Mileena get as close like them in MK1 it’s just a big hope I have for the game since both Gamora and Nebula best relationship arc’s comes in to be closer sisters in GOTG Vol.2, Vol.3 and Telltale I’m a huge sucker for having the brother and sister arc since the closest person to me is my brother
I wish he would make an appearance in MK1, but I highly doubt it. Plus I feel like making a situation between him and Raiden being brothers in this timeliness but not the new one would be weird. Like, would he be Liu Kang's brother or something? Or still Raiden's and also not a God anymore? I don't know, man, but I still want him back.
As sudden and out of nowhere as it was, I also really love how Sindel (or more accurately Twindel here) takes over Fujin's chapter for a single fight since it would make sense for her and Nightwolf to take on Cetrion at that time instead of just waiting for Fujin to get back up and fight her himself just so it can remain his chapter. Plus it assists our point to NRS that, yes, it is okay for us to play as multiple characters at once without being restricted by the Chapter system. That way, we get moments like these where the flow of the fights and the scene being told isn't slowed down or interrupted at all because another character steps in to cover another character.
I liked smoke’s chapter in mk9 since I love his gameplay in that game and I liked how it’s one of the few chapters that has direct and clear consequences with Raiden saving Smoke from Sektor, thus resulting in Sub-Zero being taken by the Lin Kuei instead
I really like Shang being saddened by the monks deaths, it's so small but it makes shang feel like a real character. He's easily one of the few shining spots of MK11

That’s 2 out of 6 characters being treated great compared to everyone, who has lots of writing issues in everything, not to mention treatment of characters that are not the main focus but somehow have their shit written so badly, it basically adds on to shitshow that mk11 was trying to do.

Well, snake only made one video on the Midway games, being Deadly Alliance retrospective. So of course most people think he doesn't even like mortal Kombat.
Although I don't think so they will change the Chapter system in MK1 but I really want them to use the fighters that makes sense for that particular fight from time to time.
One of my favorite running themes in your MK videos is how whenever you talk about the stuff worth criticizing in the NRS stories, there's always at least *one* clip of Twindel included in there somewhere.
Honestly, playing Aftermath, I went in VERY skeptical. I heard that the story was stupid, but I liked it a lot more than the base story… until the point where EVERYONE gets pissed (the Sindel twist.)

agree on the chapters thing being a detriment to the structure of the story. it was a nice try, but it wares out for the reasons you named. i think deception nailed the best, but also, the surprise of it played a big part. how would you guys do the story in mk? (be realistic to some degree, production vise)
It's crazy because it shows how there is SOMEONE who can properly write the characters and scenarios to play out properly and have things make sense, but alas it's overshadowed by the various flaws these story modes come with. Come to think of it, it feels like each random chapter was made by a different writer completely at times lol
Best one overall but I perfer Strykers mk9 chapter from a story standpoint since this normal guy is getting overwhelmed by one unexpected thing after another.
The only thing i don't like about this chapter is Shang Tsung just "I'mma steal this Earthrealmer's soul right in front of one of his godly protectors lmfao" Then Fujin just blows him away and everyone just pretends it never happened lol
Honestly, while mk11 aftermath had a *lot* of problems, i did thoroughly enjoy it, and the original trio: nightwolf, fujin, and shang tsung are my favorite iterations of the character's throughout the series character and look wise. I dont think these characters have ever had better designs and i love the way each character is depicted characterwise: smug and amiable shang tsung, cautious but determined nightwolf, and empathetic and protective fujin. These 3 are a masterclass in development from their earlier iterations
Fujin's chapter in MK11 Aftermath proves not only do they not have to stick to the one character per chapter does everything formula (you play as Sindel with Nightwolf as an assist in Fujin's chapter) but that they could actually do something with characters from the 3D games instead of just killing them off with impunity if they actually put some effort into it!

It Is Rare For NRS To Have Solid Writing Such As This And I Thought The Writers Were Going To Waste Him As Per Usual For Many Characters In This And Previous NRS Games. Yes, There Are Issues That Get In The Way But I Am Glad That Fujin Was Given Some Sort Of Justice.*
On the topic of good Mortal Kombat Chapters, I'd like to list some that I think stood out MK9: Stryker and Kabal There's nothing particularly special about either of their chapters, theres just something immensely entertaining about watching two fish out of water being exposed to the strange world of Mortal Kombat, completely out of their league. I never properly played MK9, but I saw these two Chapters on TH-cam with no context and it got me really intrigued in the story. I am biased because I do attribute part of my love for Mortal Kombat to me randomly seeing these Chapters on TH-cam one day MKX: Kotal Kahn Kotal Kahn's Chapter is a badass introduction to a new Netherrelm character, and damn they did right. This whole Chapter, Kotal is an absolute force of nature and really made me like his character. Sure hope they don't fuck it up in some way Sub Zero: I really like this Chapter because usually when a new generation of characters is introduced, they kick the OG people's asses to show how cool and new they are. But in this case, it was the other way around. Kuai Liang's presence was short and sweet in MKX and I think his character benefited from that, because it makes him all the more badass the few times we see him show up and wreck house Johnny Cage: Johnny Cage's Chapter is such a great introduction to this story. Establishing his relationship with Sonya (that they cocked up later, but focusing souly on this Chapter, it's a good way to set up their relationship). The fight scene in the airplane is still one of my favorite cutscene fights Netherrelm has ever done, and I love seeing Johnny being able to go toe to toe with an Elder God. Edit: I decided to talk about MK11 since some people seem interested MK11: Sonya Story wise, this Chapter isn't all that great as Sonichaxd detailed in his "Kano Sucks" video, but I just think the setting of this Chapter is really cool. It's basically our heroes trying to escape a seedy nightclub and they have to fight tooth and nail to get out. Bonus points for Geras' badass entrance. This is another one of those Chapters that I saw out of context on TH-cam and it made me pretty interested in what was going on, so like Stryker and Kabal, I also somewhat attribute my love for Mortal Kombat to this Chapter Kotal Kahn: If I had a nickel for every time they gave Kotal Kahn a badass introduction and then made him completely useless for the rest of the story, I'd have 2 nickles. Which isn't alot, but it's weird that it happened twice Scorpion and Sub Zero: This one for obvious reasons. Two former bitter rivals now companions in Kombat is super cool. Honorable mention to Scorpion's Chapter in MKX. I glossed over it when i first made this comment, but seeing Scorpion finally get proper revenge after like...20 years is super satisfying. And it's also the Chapter when he and Sub Zero made peace Fire God Liu Kang: This is a great final chapter to the story, despite the games many flaws, this was a well rounded conclusion, and probably the best story ending by Netherrelm. So glad Liu Kang finally got a W after all these years Aftermath: Nightwolf: Nothing particularly great about this Chapter, but the fight between the crew and Geras was awesome and very well choreographed. Probably my second favorite cutscene fight Netherrelm has done. And I'm glad it took 3 people to defeat him Shao Kahn and Sindel: Now I know this game gets shit for the Sindel retcon, and trust me I agree with it, but I'm just happy to see Shao Kahn going around and kicking ass. Seeing Shao Kahn defeat Liu Kang is a neat twist. I also love that goofy ass run Shao and Sindel do after throwing Kotal's head off the boat. They look like they're running into the Super Bowl and it's so funny Shang Tsung: Shang Tsung finally being a cool villain again (starting to notice a pattern of villain finally being cool again in Aftermath) AND being reprised by Kary Hiroyuki? Hell yeah. I also really like the plot twist with Liu Kang. It's the kind of cruel but logical choice someone with his power would ultimately make. It makes sense, because he's fused with Raiden. Raiden, being more logical, and Fujin being more compassionate. It was super satisfying to this sly but smug asshole being humbled by the Fire God Thanks to all the people who were patient enough to read this long ass comment
Stryker and Kabal being paired up is actually interesting. In MK3, Kabal's ending leads to him becoming a crime fighting vigilante (which was the original plan for Kabal). Which is then also Stryker's ending in Armageddon.
I like stryker but damn it was bs with him beating them especially ermac and mileena should’ve replaced one of them with raiden or Nightwolf like a test match
@@Deathmare235 To be fair, they mostly settled their feud in the original timeline in MK2. It was somewhat revived in MK4, then they stopped interacting until Armageddon, where MK9 reveals Sub-Zero killed Scorpion. Maybe for killing Bi Han, as he had a sword in his back that was probably Scorpion's. And Bi Han never cared about Scorpion after his transformation into Noob Saibot. As Noob, Bi Han's rival seems to be more Kuai Liang than Scorpion.
These are really good points as to why this chapter works well. Honestly, I was always a bit disappointed with this chapter due to it mostly being a rehash of Chapter 9 with the latter half of Chapter 10 thrown in at the end (and I guess the very beginning of Chapter 11 by extension). While I still don't like this chapter for that reason, this video at least gave me some more appreciation for it past the tag battles and the Sindel intermission for the Certion fight. Funny enough though, this gave me a newfound negative towards Chapter 9 due to how random the opponents were for Jax and Jackie; I guess Revenant Kabal and Jade offer a rematch for Jackie after Chapter 1 (still a bit of a weak connection), and the scripted Jax mirror match and Cetrion showdown were cool, but then there was Noob Saibot in the middle. Who thought it was a good idea to have Noob Saibot in Jax & Jackie's chapter, but not Scorpion's solo chapter?! Yeah, Hanzo could fight Noob in chapter 4, but come on! So to recap Chapter 9, the Revenants were there because they're jobbers, Noob was there because the writers didn't know what the hell they were doing, and the last two fights were the only cool and fitting ones.
If anything Fujin's chapter and characterisation pisses me off even more about the NRS era along with both Sub Zeros interaction in MK9. They are capable of writing really good moments and development but then they squander everything else.
This is great and it displays how well writing can be and the Flaws of the Chapter System. But I must ask, if you could replace the Chapter System for something else to make up the story, what would it be? And how would you make the Chapter System better if you could write it?
I’m surprised I don’t see anyone else mentioning this, to the point I’m actually wondering if I’m just crazy, but the line about Bi Han running from Fujin isn’t a mistake or retcon; at least, not directly. It’s a reference to the fact that, unlike every other boss fight in the game, you actually don’t need to fight Fujin. You can just run past him completely and finish the stage just fine. Considering Fujin being still alive but also being a god, nobody was ever really sure if this was intentional or not since he could probably survive exploring like that, but it looks funny either way.

3:09 I hope MK1 Kameos will be like that, i've heard rumors that Kameos in story mode won't be linked with the story and that you could choose any ramdom kharacters as Kameos even if it's canonically not present in the plot : Which would be an incredibly wasted potential !
Fujin became one of my favorite characters starting with Armageddon where he is portrayed as a refreshingly and genuinely compassionate God; I felt bad beating him back in Armageddon and wished he had more of a role than what he got. Maybe I'm just a sucker for truly good people like him.
As much as I am gonna give credit to NRS for acc doing fujin great in this mk11, I also have a massive feeling that this feels more of a one-off to say ‘oh look guys, we treat him well’and then later, treat him like shit in future titles. Could’ve had a good opportunity with fujin being the current adviser of liu kang to show that liu is still learning despite having all of raiden’s memories considered he never gave his powers and have him take more centre stage in other realms such as orderrealm and chaosrealm but they might drop him which is what I feel sadly
To be honest, Bi Han did run away from the tornado and it's debatable whether or not he actually defeated Fujin. Fujin's death is more of a joke and of course they aren't going to acknowledge one of the main characters of Aftermath dying to his own powers. Also, there is no way Bi Han would be strong enough to canonically defeat a god. Not even Liu Kang could do that.
I chuckled at 05:43. Despite never playing a _Farcry_ game still, I remember this "definition of insanity" scene--ad?--that's unfortunately apt for NRS's chapter system. I had also forgotten that the Twindel "twist" is *right* after Fujin's solid chapter. Ouch. That actually makes the "twist" even worse than if it had followed the usual subpar chapter, like Jade's or something.
Injustice 1 has a perfect story mode i wish every game they made had a story as good as that I'd genuinely say injustive 1's story is better than anything made before or after it by the mk team even pre nrs can't hold a flame to Injustice 1 and mk9's is pretty good too i just didn't like playing as booby women and wish their designs were less "omg boobies titties ass boobies" and the time travel stuff is kinda silly
Fujin might be the most consistently well-written character, despite how this is his first time being all that fleshed out. Shame they'll just do. Nothing with him from now on.

No doubt this was a good story arc. Fujin definitely delivered, his speech to Jax is one of my favorite moments of his chapter.

Fujin is certainly one of the gods in Mortal Kombat. There is also Raiden.
This may as well be Sindel's best chapter too since she's not Twindel... yet.
Although I don't think so they will change the Chapter system in MK1 but I really want them to use the fighters that makes sense for that particular fight from time to time.
I think Fujin and Smoke would be a good combo
One of my favorite running themes in your MK videos is how whenever you talk about the stuff worth criticizing in the NRS stories, there's always at least *one* clip of Twindel included in there somewhere.

Honestly, playing Aftermath, I went in VERY skeptical. I heard that the story was stupid, but I liked it a lot more than the base story… until the point where EVERYONE gets pissed (the Sindel twist.)

I was really hoping they’d ditch the chapter system in MK1, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen…
However with the trailers it looks like each faction gets their own side plot instead of just good vs evil.

agree on the chapters thing being a detriment to the structure of the story. it was a nice try, but it wares out for the reasons you named. i think deception nailed the best, but also, the surprise of it played a big part. how would you guys do the story in mk? (be realistic to some degree, production vise)

It's crazy because it shows how there is SOMEONE who can properly write the characters and scenarios to play out properly and have things make sense, but alas it's overshadowed by the various flaws these story modes come with.

Honestly, while mk11 aftermath had a *lot* of problems, i did thoroughly enjoy it, and the original trio: nightwolf, fujin, and shang tsung are my favorite iterations of the character's throughout the series character and look wise. I dont think these characters have ever had better designs and i love the way each character is depicted characterwise: smug and amiable shang tsung, cautious but determined nightwolf, and empathetic and protective fujin. These 3 are a masterclass in development from their earlier iterations

Fujin's chapter in MK11 Aftermath proves not only do they not have to stick to the one character per chapter does everything formula (you play as Sindel with Nightwolf as an assist in Fujin's chapter) but that they could actually do something with characters from the 3D games instead of just killing them off with impunity if they actually put some effort into it!

On the topic of good Mortal Kombat Chapters, I'd like to list some that I think stood out
MK9: Stryker and Kabal
There's nothing particularly special about either of their chapters, theres just something immensely entertaining about watching two fish out of water being exposed to the strange world of Mortal Kombat, completely out of their league. I never properly played MK9, but I saw these two Chapters on TH-cam with no context and it got me really intrigued in the story. I am biased because I do attribute part of my love for Mortal Kombat to me randomly seeing these Chapters on TH-cam one day
MKX: Kotal Kahn
Kotal Kahn's Chapter is a badass introduction to a new Netherrelm character, and damn they did right. This whole Chapter, Kotal is an absolute force of nature and really made me like his character. Sure hope they don't fuck it up in some way
Sub Zero: I really like this Chapter because usually when a new generation of characters is introduced, they kick the OG people's asses to show how cool and new they are. But in this case, it was the other way around. Kuai Liang's presence was short and sweet in MKX and I think his character benefited from that, because it makes him all the more badass the few times we see him show up and wreck house
Johnny Cage: Johnny Cage's Chapter is such a great introduction to this story. Establishing his relationship with Sonya (that they cocked up later, but focusing souly on this Chapter, it's a good way to set up their relationship). The fight scene in the airplane is still one of my favorite cutscene fights Netherrelm has ever done, and I love seeing Johnny being able to go toe to toe with an Elder God.

MK11: Sonya
Story wise, this Chapter isn't all that great as Sonichaxd detailed in his "Kano Sucks" video, but I just think the setting of this Chapter is really cool. It's basically our heroes trying to escape a seedy nightclub and they have to fight tooth and nail to get out. Bonus points for Geras' badass entrance. This is another one of those Chapters that I saw out of context on TH-cam and it made me pretty interested in what was going on, so like Stryker and Kabal, I also somewhat attribute my love for Mortal Kombat to this Chapter
Kotal Kahn: If I had a nickel for every time they gave Kotal Kahn a badass introduction and then made him completely useless for the rest of the story, I'd have 2 nickles. Which isn't alot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Scorpion and Sub Zero: This one for obvious reasons. Two former bitter rivals now companions in Kombat is super cool. Honorable mention to Scorpion's Chapter in MKX. I glossed over it when i first made this comment, but seeing Scorpion finally get proper revenge after like...20 years is super satisfying. And it's also the Chapter when he and Sub Zero made peace
Fire God Liu Kang: This is a great final chapter to the story, despite the games many flaws, this was a well rounded conclusion, and probably the best story ending by Netherrelm. So glad Liu Kang finally got a W after all these years
Aftermath:
Nightwolf: Nothing particularly great about this Chapter, but the fight between the crew and Geras was awesome and very well choreographed. Probably my second favorite cutscene fight Netherrelm has done. And I'm glad it took 3 people to defeat him
Shao Kahn and Sindel: Now I know this game gets shit for the Sindel retcon, and trust me I agree with it, but I'm just happy to see Shao Kahn going around and kicking ass. Seeing Shao Kahn defeat Liu Kang is a neat twist. I also love that goofy ass run Shao and Sindel do after throwing Kotal's head off the boat. They look like they're running into the Super Bowl and it's so funny
Shang Tsung: Shang Tsung finally being a cool villain again (starting to notice a pattern of villain finally being cool again in Aftermath) AND being reprised by Kary Hiroyuki? Hell yeah. I also really like the plot twist with Liu Kang. It's the kind of cruel but logical choice someone with his power would ultimately make. It makes sense, because he's fused with Raiden. Raiden, being more logical, and Fujin being more compassionate. It was super satisfying to this sly but smug asshole being humbled by the Fire God

Stryker and Kabal being paired up is actually interesting. In MK3, Kabal's ending leads to him becoming a crime fighting vigilante (which was the original plan for Kabal). Which is then also Stryker's ending in Armageddon.

I like stryker but damn it was bs with him beating them especially ermac and mileena should’ve replaced one of them with raiden or Nightwolf like a test match
For mk11 I’d say kotal for the exact same reasons as X and Scorpion and Sub Zero since the rivalry has finally settled
@@Deathmare235 To be fair, they mostly settled their feud in the original timeline in MK2. It was somewhat revived in MK4, then they stopped interacting until Armageddon, where MK9 reveals Sub-Zero killed Scorpion. Maybe for killing Bi Han, as he had a sword in his back that was probably Scorpion's. And Bi Han never cared about Scorpion after his transformation into Noob Saibot. As Noob, Bi Han's rival seems to be more Kuai Liang than Scorpion.

These are really good points as to why this chapter works well. Honestly, I was always a bit disappointed with this chapter due to it mostly being a rehash of Chapter 9 with the latter half of Chapter 10 thrown in at the end (and I guess the very beginning of Chapter 11 by extension). While I still don't like this chapter for that reason, this video at least gave me some more appreciation for it past the tag battles and the Sindel intermission for the Certion fight.
Funny enough though, this gave me a newfound negative towards Chapter 9 due to how random the opponents were for Jax and Jackie; I guess Revenant Kabal and Jade offer a rematch for Jackie after Chapter 1 (still a bit of a weak connection), and the scripted Jax mirror match and Cetrion showdown were cool, but then there was Noob Saibot in the middle. Who thought it was a good idea to have Noob Saibot in Jax & Jackie's chapter, but not Scorpion's solo chapter?! Yeah, Hanzo could fight Noob in chapter 4, but come on!
So to recap Chapter 9, the Revenants were there because they're jobbers, Noob was there because the writers didn't know what the hell they were doing, and the last two fights were the only cool and fitting ones.

If anything Fujin's chapter and characterisation pisses me off even more about the NRS era along with both Sub Zeros interaction in MK9. They are capable of writing really good moments and development but then they squander everything else.
That would allow for more spread out fights and wins and loses between bad guys and good guys

This is great and it displays how well writing can be and the Flaws of the Chapter System. But I must ask, if you could replace the Chapter System for something else to make up the story, what would it be? And how would you make the Chapter System better if you could write it?
Chapter would just be scenes. Characters would be used in fights as needed.

I’m surprised I don’t see anyone else mentioning this, to the point I’m actually wondering if I’m just crazy, but the line about Bi Han running from Fujin isn’t a mistake or retcon; at least, not directly. It’s a reference to the fact that, unlike every other boss fight in the game, you actually don’t need to fight Fujin. You can just run past him completely and finish the stage just fine. Considering Fujin being still alive but also being a god, nobody was ever really sure if this was intentional or not since he could probably survive exploring like that, but it looks funny either way.
To be honest I always thought that Fujin died and later he respawned

Fujin became one of my favorite characters starting with Armageddon where he is portrayed as a refreshingly and genuinely compassionate God; I felt bad beating him back in Armageddon and wished he had more of a role than what he got. Maybe I'm just a sucker for truly good people like him.

As much as I am gonna give credit to NRS for acc doing fujin great in this mk11, I also have a massive feeling that this feels more of a one-off to say ‘oh look guys, we treat him well’and then later, treat him like shit in future titles.
Could’ve had a good opportunity with fujin being the current adviser of liu kang to show that liu is still learning despite having all of raiden’s memories considered he never gave his powers and have him take more centre stage in other realms such as orderrealm and chaosrealm but they might drop him which is what I feel sadly
To be honest, Bi Han did run away from the tornado and it's debatable whether or not he actually defeated Fujin.
Fujin's death is more of a joke and of course they aren't going to acknowledge one of the main characters of Aftermath dying to his own powers.
Also, there is no way Bi Han would be strong enough to canonically defeat a god. Not even Liu Kang could do that.
I chuckled at 05:43. Despite never playing a _Farcry_ game still, I remember this "definition of insanity" scene--ad?--that's unfortunately apt for NRS's chapter system.
I had also forgotten that the Twindel "twist" is *right* after Fujin's solid chapter. Ouch. That actually makes the "twist" even worse than if it had followed the usual subpar chapter, like Jade's or something.

Injustice 1 has a perfect story mode i wish every game they made had a story as good as that I'd genuinely say injustive 1's story is better than anything made before or after it by the mk team even pre nrs can't hold a flame to Injustice 1 and mk9's is pretty good too i just didn't like playing as booby women and wish their designs were less "omg boobies titties ass boobies" and the time travel stuff is kinda silly

Fujin might be the most consistently well-written character, despite how this is his first time being all that fleshed out.
