1987 IMSA GTP at Laguna Seca

  • Okay, there are other versions of this on YT..but I've heard from other folks that multiple uploads of stuff is a good thing, since some channels get taken down. The display on my old VHS player says that I actually recorded it in SP instead of LP, maybe it's a better quality upload. Hey, videotape is all we had back then!
As far as the race goes: Laguna Seca before the 'bike course' got laid in. Braking after you went up the hill must have been crazy on the original circuit. Again, the Hawk is fast, but fragile. I kind of dig Crawford sticking with the program just to get into GTP.
I still wonder why Lyn was talking into a mic instead of driving that weekend, especially after Scott couldn't do any better with the Probe than she did in the previous year, Bruce Levin hires Klaus..seemed to work out OK after his own car expires. Rob hires Price..oh what might have been, without the broken parts. Oh, and Corvette actually finishes this one. Even with the pit lane fire. Sarel might have actually been faster than Doc.Hendrick sure left the man in the car for quite awhile.

I love watching these 80s GTP races!.. I mean what could possibly be better than Group C cars without the fuel or boost restrictions?! Nothing! These cars are still the best era of prototype racing ever - because the cars really were prototypes (besides the Porsche, which outsold some family cars over its lifetime)... But the cars looked different... Sounded different... Made over 800hp...ahhh man these were just awesome cars on some awesome tracks.
I didn't like the street races so much... But GTP cars at Road America, this old higher speed version of Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta when they used to fly underneath the bridge at 180mph...these cars were just ridiculously fast and borderline over powered... But they were spectacular.
Thank you for posting this awesomeness for us to enjoy 30+ years later!

This is awesome Mr SCCAGuy, thanks a lot for loading up. It's funny to think that Bob Varsha and David Hobbs would end up working together in the not too far future! Laguna Seca is a fantastic track and alive been there many times, that said it's very small and was probably not enough track for these beasts! Still, it's great to see them racing there.

The 88-92 GTP cars are some of the best looking race cars of all time. My favorite has still always been the Toyota GT-One from around 99-00 that they made for LeMans.

My home track is Portland as well. Would love to get IMSA back. Other than Indycar and the upcoming Xfinity race next season, not many good races left at PIR. Even the Rose Cup weekend was a bust last summer.

oldSCCAguy yah Thanks for video. The IMSA GTP ground effects cars were the fastest cars since the Can Am racers. Awesome speed and racing.

@@lukmanfirdaus8497 They pretty much were the same, except for some modifications for IMSA's shorter races.

    • @Logan912

@@lukmanfirdaus8497 IMSA GTP and FIA Group C were basically the same except Group C had fuel allotment restrictions. In fact, several teams raced in both series with practically the same cars.
In 1991, FIA introduced the new C1 rules that mandated the new cars to use Formula 1 engines, and by 1992 it was mandatory for all cars. However, that ended up killing the series because only the top teams could afford running the cars while everyone else dropped out. At the same time, IMSA GTP died because the American-based teams dropped out because they were losing to Japanese cars, and the Japanese-based teams had to leave because Japan had a bad economic recession.

@@Logan912 Fun fact, most of the "Japanese" teams were Japanese in name only (the Toyota team was called "All American Racers", ffs), and in fact most of them never intended on leaving the series until IMSA cancelled the GTP class. As of 1993, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Honda and Jaguar were all either confirmed or near-confirmed entries for the season.
Also, AFAIK, in Europe most of the teams quit not because of costs, but because the ACO straight-up kicked them out of the series by dumping the Group C2 class. Real good decision right there.
