    He was comparing it to his own experience with DnD and honestly that's kind of the beauty of this game and ttrpgs in general - it's really how much the players and GM are invested and are willing to deep dive these sort of things. BG3 is just a DnD campaign where everyone is all in most of the time

    • @LkMrcndz
      @LkMrcndz ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Some people joke that BG3 is like playing tabletop without having to interact with other humans, and your post nails the Why. It's tailored for any player: you don't have to be and compromise with some other person who doesn't vibe with your playstyle (I like fighting without spending hours chatting in-character/I like following a story or our characters' arc without a bunch of fights getting in the way/I like exploring without having a story dragging me around).
      Of course, the downside is that a videogame still needs a road and can't just do Anything, which is what tabletop gaming with humans can.

    The biggest complait I have for BG3 is that it has given me the biggest case of indecisivness to date. I play for like 5-10 hours before going "I wonder what (Race/Class combo) would be like", then deleting my save and starting all over again.

    Coming from other CRPGs, one aspect that I think BG3 misses about looting is the ability to mass loot an area. IIRC both PoE and Pathfinder:WotR had that. Where if you have like a group of boxes, clicking on one box opens them all into a single loot window. Same for after battles, all of the grouped corpses would open into a single loot window. It makes looting way less tedious.

    I'm playing a Bard and, as Pat explained with Paige's sorcerer, it's surprising and really funny how many times there's dialogue choices where you can not only convince main guy or monster of a group to kill all they're minions pre-fight, but also convincing the would be mob boss to kill itself, avoiding a fight altogether.
    For example, a strong stupid monster was very hungry, so convince him that he shouldn't try to kill and eat my party, that'd be ridiculous, he should definitely kill and eat his own party instead. Shit, his crew is dead, but he's still hungry. Well, I guess there's no choice but to...oh wait a sec, a deception option to convince the monster that he should eat itself instead of us??? That's just comically crazy enough to work! Let them dice roll, and if succeeded, avoid the entire conflict while gaining inspiration, extra experience, plus the experience that you would've received fighting the entire mob. Just one of multiple times you can do this in the game, and it's great every time.

    I feel like Pat has talked about playing one of the Divinity: Original Sin games, but I haven't seen him reference it when discussing the radial loot check, but I personally feel the controller usage by Larian in the definitive versions of that series was much more fluid and had an overall better quality of life when it came to UI. Still, Larian is killing it once again. It's unbelievable how much they've evolved over their past three games, and arguably evolved the RPG genre as a whole. The definitive edition, which is basically a given for Larian, is gonna be insane.

    There is another gameplay reason to have hirelings if you're a crazy person like me. You can have some hirelings around that just cast support spells that last until long rest (such as upcasted aid and longstrider) and just leave them back at camp after. You can do this with origin characters too, but if you don't want to futz around with changing their canon classes that's one way of doing it.

    I really have a big problem with the 'story progresses by rest' thing, and that is I try to put off doing rests as much as possible. • @Muninnnr
    @Muninnnr ปีที่แล้ว

    If Larian ever decides to do some major content updates for the game, there are 3 things I'd like them to add:
    1. Official Lone Wolf mode. Giving you the option to limit you team to 2 (or even 1) characters that get buffed appropriately in turn could make for some interesting gameplay. I downloaded a Lone Wolf mod and played through the entire game as an evil tag-team of The Dark Urge and Minthara and had a blast doing so.
    2. More gear and random drops. There's a lot of gear options in BG3, but everything exists at set places. This means that every playthrough tend to end up fairly similar since you get the exact same drops in the exact same places. Having certain unique and legendary items in fixed places makes sense, but there could be more variety with all the green and blue gear. More options could also allow for more niche playstyles.
    3. New Game+. Starting over with a full team of max level characters could be fun, but they'd need to rebalance the entire game.

    Having played BG3 for over 100 hours, I'll say this game does not have 3 games worth of content. I find that an over exaggeration and this is coming from someone that hasn't finished the game yet. I'd say maybe 1.5 games worth of content. Mainly because of those 100 hours, 60 of them have been spent making new characters, trying out builds, exploring the world, listening to every interaction, and I'd say 10 of those 60 hours have probably been inventory management and looting alone. If you focused on the story itself and the sidequests, it's probably 40 hours or so. Pat's streamer goggles aren't a good metric of a game's content because he plays slowly and for an audience. It is definitely a densely packed game but to say the game has more going on than say the Mass Effect trilogy in terms of story, is crazy talk. The Acts aren't as long story wise as Pat makes them out to be.

      I disagree, my first playthrough was 110 hours and I didn't spend any on making characters or minmaxing, I ran with the default characters I was given, mostly. I missed many sidequests and events and still went over the 100 hours mark. Considering the average game is 30-40 hours, it think it's fair to say that it feels like BG is playing 3 games in a row.

    • @NovaCascade
      @NovaCascade ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mantis47 My point is, once you ran through the game once. You'll begin to see where the content actually is in the game. All those houses that you explored that had nothing of note in them, all those spots in the map you wasted 2-3 minutes to get to so you could see if there was anything interesting in, all those empty rooms, hatches, cellars you'd go in to that you find nothing in. Just look at the quests for each location on the BG3 wiki on fextralife. The game does an amazing job at immersing you in to the game and making you feel like it's a huge environment with a ton of things to see and explore, it does so beautifully and more games need to give you that feeling. The game is still a 10/10 for me, and I'll keep replaying it for years to come. But let's be realistic here, once you get past that initial frontloading phase you'll see that the game is 40-60 hours at most which is very much worth every penny. That's what happened to me anyways, I did my first character and ran about 50-60 hours and not even touching act 3. Made another character, was in act 3 before the 40 hour mark. That's like saying that Starfield is worth 3 games just because someone can spend 120 hours on it their first playthrough. However, I will accept the concession that this game has 5 games worth of enjoyment at least.

      I think the problem is more tied to the fact that they all just happen as part of the long rest instead of being dialogues you can opt into. Having played a lot of BG3 I started spamming longrests at particular times during the game, because I know that they are going to stack, and in some instances they cancel eachother. I feel like they should have at least the romance/character stuff be camp dialogue, so that you can have multiple interactions while in camp and not be forced to do 8 long rests in a row in order to trigger all the stuff you want to trigger.

    What it actually feels like is game, dlc, expansion, and then game.
    Underdark/underforge feels like DLC content that was thrown in for lulls, which is fine. You could cut them out and lose almost nothing narratively, but, hey, Astarion scolding you for failing to take Nere's head is funny.
    Act 2, though, feels like an expansion meant to bridge the next game events, much like how Mass Effect 2 and DA:I did....And boy on repeated playthroughs does Act 2 feel like the neglected one of the acts.
    Last light inn, to Moonrise, to Shar and not as much interactions with people as in Act 1 or 3. Not to mention just how FAST you can clear ACT2 compared to the other two acts.

    there was a full week where we couldn't really play at all because an update broke the dialogue and made the game crash when you listened to another player's convos. it's so fucked.
    i love this game so much but it makes me want to fucking die when everything falls apart every five minutes.

    You don't need to fully commit to camp interactions.
    First playthrough I chose Paladin of Vengeance. I sat back and let camp/party events/storylines unfold. Then, if required, I cast judgement. As far as major decisions regarding their personal quests, I let them decide, not me. I did not romance anyone whatsoever.
    I was neutral in every respect, until I needed to intervene (I am the law). Every party member made it to the end and every party member chose morally positive outcomes throughout.
    This game is a blend of existing "RP"G smoke and mirror tactics. It doesn't do anything new.
    You mentioned Mass Effect. You choose one of two storylines to play through, before you even click new game (it's pre-determined). Other games use conversation flow charts and remember specific markers for later.
    This game just uses multiple existing techniques, to gloss over the fact that developers cannot presently code human interaction and subsequent reaction. It's not monumental or groundbreaking, despite all the "GOTY" flag waving.

    Act 3 is still great but it's definitely rougher around the edges. Had a huge sequence break in a questline as a result of the kind of exploring I always do and that the game had always adjusted for previously- this time it told me to talk to a character I had never heard of and acted like it was a mission given by a character that was literally supposed to be imprisoned in an unknown location at the time as though I'd already saved them. Had to seriously adjust settings to get the Lower City to stop crashing the game every 5 minutes as well.
    On the other hand, the city feels more like an actual city than almost any other city you can point to in an RPG. To anyone saying cut content, sure, Upper City is mentioned a lot and I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up in the Definitive version later. But even in its current state it dwarfs what you see in most games, there are so many interactions and so many ways they can play out. You will have a vastly different cast of characters even being alive depending on the choices you make, entire major characters that you could have killed 100 hours ago, solutions to quest dependent on who you've made friends with or not. So many choice games focus on "mean dialog choice" "nice dialog choice". My favorite familiar is only in my party because of succeeding a dice roll and making specific choices in the first ten minutes of the game, followed by finding them in Act 2 again when somebody could easily miss one or both encounters, make a different choice at any step and be locked out or not know the option exists at all. None of the people I've watched playthroughs of have done it, but they've also all done things I had no idea were even in the game as well. By Act 3, so many of these have piled up the differences become even more pronounced.
