    Perhaps the reason why Mega Man was walking around the valley for many seasons was because he was exhausted from having to chase Dr. Wily for two games, and was thinking things over before deciding to leave behind his helmet and retire at the village he kept walking by. I know that Mega Man can't retire, but maybe Capcom originally thought Mega Man 2 would be their last Mega Man game, and therefore made the ending cutscene to indicate that he was retiring... Of course, he didn't, but that's how I interpret the ending cutscene.

      It's funny you mention that, because despite the fact that Rock has a strong sense of justice, he...really doesn't like fighting all that much (he chooses to do it anyway, because he wants to keep the world safe from assholes like Wily), so your interpretation could be quite accurate.

      I would actually go under the assumption that the Mega Man 2 Ending *is* the actual ending to the Classic series. The X-Series set up the start of the Zero Series in X6, so it makes sense that, at least in a retroactive sense, the Mega Man 2 ending is what happens at the end of the Classic era, at least excluding what's shown in Maverick Hunter X, with Dr. Light building X. Maybe Classic decided to hang the mega buster up for one reason or another, such as what you listed, where he just becomes exhausted after the same song and dance continuing to go on, or Dr. Wily passing on for one reason or another, or, in a more gruesome twist, Rock's expiration date has arrived, and he's taking one last look around his town or the world before he gets scrapped, leaving helmet behind for anyone to find, so his legacy is remembered.

      How about there is a MegaMan X fan game currently in development that allows X to shoot in all 8 directions, as well as dash under narrow ceilings (similar to Rock's slide), and roll over on his back from a dash in order to shoot someone behind him (as impractical as that sounds in a 2D game, it still looks cool).

    I think the point of the Megaman 2 ending was to say "Megaman's hanging up the helmet" He's going into early retirement, in other words.
    Why? Well, in-game, I don't know. I guess two adventures fighting 14 robot masters, and a stubborn doctor, "tired him out" and he doesn't want to keep fighting. Or Megaman Classic was having similar thoughts to Megaman X from the first 3 X games, questioning why people fight. And Megaman was considering stopping because he didn't like violence. But these are both big stretches.
    Another reason was that they were probably planning on ending the series here because Capcom didn't even care about it that much. They only got to work on it as a side project for about... 8 months, I think you said? In the end, they probably didn't expect Capcom to say "Yes" to a Megaman 3. The melancholy tone and Megaman's yearwalking work into this because the people who made the game must have really enjoyed making it, and wanted to make another but didn't think they would ever get the chance, so they show that it is a sad ending for the series.
    And then Megaman 3 came in. And Megaman 4... and 5, 6, 7, 8, and eventually 9 and 10. Plus the X games and... well, they sure got their wish. :3.

    I have a love/hate relationship with Mega Man 2. On one hand, I do love the game. It improves (nearly) every aspect the original game had, has some great platforming levels, and has one of the best soundtracks in the Classic series. On the other hand, I'm probably the only Mega Man fan out there that wants other games in the series to be recognized. Seeing 2 over and over again gets to me, and it annoys me when people brush every other game after it. Also, I loathe the weapon system in this game. The Metal Blades are great, but I find them to be the biggest problem with the weapon system. Since the Metal Blades are so overpowered, I feel a lot of the experimentation was lost from the original game and the rest of the series. The other weapons feel incredibly situational (looking at you Crash Bomber, Air Shooter and Bubble Lead), and the Buebeam Trap is one of the worst bosses in the series. Overall, Mega Man 2 is one of my least favorite games in the Classic series, but it is still a good game. Damn good, but I personally prefer many other Mega Man games to this.

      I like 2, but on a side note, I never understood why Metal Blade was so popular. Just look at the Quick Boomerang! It can be fired virtually forever (by the time you lose 2 or three bars, you will have found a refill anyway), and it is fully automatic! That, and the Metal Blade, do take away that experimentation.

    So... Capcom wanted to forget about Megaman originally and the only way they'd let a sequel come to be was if it was done by those who cared about the character in their own free time, while Capcom wouldn't lift a finger to help?
    Oh, the irony....
    Well, 25 years later, they got their wish! And look at how much good it did them, blue bomber fans abandoning them, protests to continue the games they gave up on, a spirital successor that was made by possible by the fans, going out of business- Man, this company knows how to get shit done!
    They wanted to give up on the character after one game, which forced those who did care about it to make ONE OF THE BEST NINTENDO GAMES EVER on their own time- and after it became a success? Capcom did their damnedest to milk the series dry, and eventually kicked the series to the curb along with everyone who still cared.

    • @Kapenguin448
      @Kapenguin448 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, not without justification. Capcom didn't completely give up on Mega Man after the first game, or else they wouldn't have ever allowed them to make Mega Man 2 in the first place. It's not that they didn't wanna lift a finger to help, it's that they wanted to focus on games that can turn a profit, like any game company. Their recent practices though? That's a little more puzzling to me.

Sure, some people like the metal blade for its long range, but I love it because it has a very high ammo count and it can add more challenge to the game. I have completed Megaman 2 with just the quick boomerang and I continue to do that in my free time.

      @@esmooth919 I played through MM2 multiple times while experimenting with the stage order before starting to migrate from Metal Man First to Air Man First, so I probably started playing Difficult (Original Japanese difficulty) by that point; iirc, on that difficulty the Mega Buster does 1 damage to most Robot Masters and 2 to Air Man, it just feels like a particularly fast and easy way to down Air Man to me since the small shots of the Buster can occasionally slip through the Air Shooter barrage, letting me chip away at him from a safe distance more easily than most weapons whose shots are so big that they'll be blocked every time unless I hop through the barrage to close in on Air Man and shoot him at point-blank range, and this allows me to focus on dodging until I wear him down.

By the way, I don't think the boss battle in Wily's Castle 4 was poor design, I think they did that intentionally. It's uniquely challenging.

    A lot of people will probably hate me for this but honestly Mega Man 2 is my least favorite (and he most overrated). It's still a good game but to me, I like the others better. There's still some awesome music in this game. Also I'm one of those people who likes Wily Stage 3 better than Wily Stage 1. And Heat Man's theme is okay. Most of MM2's soundtrack to me is neatral, with the exceptions of Metal Man, Wood Man, Crash Man, Quick Man, Dr Wily Stages 1 and 3 (Stage 1 is REALLY overrated. There are other songs too. Don't focus on just one song.). I'd have to say that my favorite game in the series happens to be the one that everyone says is the hardest (a.k.a Mega Man 1). Second favorite being Mega Man 3, third favorite is a tie between 7 and 9. I don't know which is better. Fifth favorite is a tie between 4 and 10, Seventh favorite goes to Mega Man and Bass. The most neutral game in the series goes to Mega Man 8. Third least favorite is Mega Man 6. Second least favorite being Mega Man 5, and my least favorite out of all of them is self-explanitory at this point. It's my opinion so no hate comments. I'd like to say my favorite Mega Man 2 RM is Quick Man.

    I have a theory on the 1st credits theme, and why megaman keeps leaving dr willey (Misspelling was on purpose), is becsuse they are just CLONES of wiley. Why else would Megaman let willy escape like he did in Meagman 4 like that? BECAUSE IT WAS NOT HIM! And in Megaman 3, protoman questions where willy is, when he can scan for life forms, AND THERE WERE NONE, other than Megaman, but he's a ROBOT not a HUMAN! The only 2 exceptions to this is Megaman 6 and 7, where in 6, Megaman arrests dr wiley, and in megaman 7, he tries to kill him. Any other excepions?

    I don't think the ending should be taken so literally. I think the game's creators were really passionate about it, but also had to consider the very real possibility that it might not perform better in the marketplace than the first game did. Knowing this, they made an ending that was open, yet could still serve as a bittersweet farewell to the Rockman character if the worst happened.

    It still pisses me off to this day that this game got it's own review while the best NES game 4 got lumped in with the worst megaman game, honestly this is the second worst megaman game in the series.
    The robot master stages are fine, but everything else is awful and busted.
    The weapons are garbage or godlike and everything, quick boomerang and metal blade which are stupid good and overshadow while everything else is just worthless except for 1 or two situations I don't get how it's fun to have only two useful weapons it's megaman 5 levels of trash weapons.
    And actually the level design is worse that MM1 there are tons of sections where damage is almost unavoidable and the wily stages are short and ass there's nothing to them then you reach buubeam trap which is the worst boss in any NES game ever.
    Honestly megaman 1 is a better game in almost every way. But megaman 4 overshadows 1 2 and 3 in every way, it has the best weapon selection only being rivaled by megaman 9 it has the best robot masters (subjective) better music than MM2 and fantastic level design, and it's story was actually a surprise as a kid I didn't see the twist coming because it was the first megaman game to have it.
    I'm never going to understand why people love MM2 so much and I even grew up with the fucking game but I never found it that good or anywhere near worthy of its place as best megaman game.

    • @lethrys4687
      @lethrys4687 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good post. MM2 is very overrated, and while I have no problem with people enjoying it for what it is, it's full of flaws and a lot of its love is mostly from nostalgia. The weapons are unbalanced, with only two of them being good while the rest are trash. The level design hasn't aged well. There are plenty of sections in Quick Man and Flash Man's stages where you have to be lucky in order to take the paths with items instead of enemies with annoying placement. Sometimes you won't be able to take the good path anyway because you didn't have Item 1-3 or Crash Bomb. There's an area in Wily Stage 2 that baits you into using Crash Bomb three times while missing out on TWO E-TANKS AND TWO 1UPS. Wily Castle as a whole is full of excessive mandatory Item usage, and I don't think I need to talk about how poorly designed the Wily Stage 3 boss is.
      MM4, meanwhile, is my favorite of the classic series. The weapons are much more useful and balanced; Bright Flash, for example, is literally a better Flash Stopper. You can use it in increments instead of one long use that you can't cancel, and you can even SHOOT while using it. The levels are infamous for the amount of spikes, but to me that's better than being set back simply by choosing the wrong path. The game introduced the charge shot and it had creative enemies and minibosses. The music was better to me, although that's subjective. I honestly don't see why everyone is hyped up over 2's soundtrack all the time.

    This is actually my 4th most favorite Mega Man game behind MM9, MMX and MM3. The main reasons are that the difficulty becomes totally non-existent once you play it a few times (at least the Robot Master stages), there is also no slide here (which is something many people like) and the infamous Wily Stage 4 turret boss is notorious for it's high demand for ammo conservation. But other than that, it's such a well-crafted game with an amazing visual style and musical soundtrack.

    Let me field a few things Johnny mentioned but couldn't give a proper answer.
    1. The airman thing being hard is really just a joke for the humor song Airman Ga Taosenai. The only hard thing that could possibly be considered difficult is the stage itself.
    2. The be precise about the sprite flickering, it's a setting you can turn on and off on the anniversary collection. They also fix the pause glitch in megaman 1 in the anniversary collection.

  • @frozenaorta
    @frozenaorta 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone who's been playing these games since their release, I highly recommend the Anniversary Collection. On another note, the guns/walls boss at the end of Wily Castle 4 is NOT bad game design. It's tricky design. You have exactly enough Crash ammo to destroy all the guns and ONLY the walls absolutely necessary--you can use Item 1 to go around the other walls. It's a puzzle...one that we painstakingly solved as 8-yr olds. But then, kids were more hard-nosed gamers back then. *shakes cane*

  • @Tyuzinhuh
    @Tyuzinhuh 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing about the sprite flickering... While is certainly distracting on the original NES version and the Wii VC version, when I play on the 3ds eshop version, I actually almost never experience it. Did they somehow fixed it for the 3ds? Or am I missing something here?

    To explain why Air Man is known for being difficult, he was much harder in the original version. On top of that, there's a song called "Air Man ga Taosenai", which means "I Can't Defeat Air Man".
    The player can't pass the infamous disappearing blocks in Heat Man's stage. He eventually learns that the Item-2 can make it easier. However, its gained after defeating Air Man and despite his best efforts, he "can't defeat Air Man", especially with his stage weakening the player. (rest in next part)

His weakness is Heat Man's weapon, but you can't get to Heat Man because of the disappearing blocks right before his door. You can use Item-2 to skip that section, but you need to beat Air Man to do so. (continued in a reply)

    Wily Fortress 3 and 4 music reminds me of the final toccata from Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
