      However. These aren't wild caught mollies. In fact these kind of fish "balloon mollies" don't even exist in the wild. They made a deformed fish, bred in freshwater for the pet trade, bred to have curved spines and unhealthy characteristics. I can assure you that balloon mollies will not do well in a salt water setup. Maybe live for a year Max! Nearly all pet trade mollies are primarily freshwater, because that's where they have been kept and bred for thousands of generations (Molly generations). Using the wild specimens for reference is almost pointless at that stage.

    What a lot of the folks commenting down here don't realize is that mollies are brackish water fish; they tend to be found in semi-saltwater conditions and are able to swim further upstream into the more fresh water in their native habitats. This is perfectly fine for them, they are not being abused in any way.
    Per Wikipedia; "These livebearers are native to fresh, brackish and salt water in the Americas, and some species in the genus are euryhaline." It's all good, y'all.

  • @pauljs75

    I think this can be done with about any fish that originally came from coastal rivers and live in a delta type environment. They have to be able to survive the brackish inflow that comes with the high tide or situations where currents just wash them right into the ocean for more prolonged periods. Now if their original freshwater habitat is high up on the river or inland lakes, then they're going to have some issues.

    Way back when I was a kid, it was hard to keep even black mollies in fresh water. They always got sick, which would eventually get all of your other fish sick eventually. Oddly the stupid molly wouldn't necessarily die, but everything else would, especially if you added salt to cure the ick or whatever was killing your fish.
    Over the years, mollies have been bred to live better in fresh water, but they are still pretty much brackish fish. I might add that we used to feed guppies to salt water fish and we had some guppies that were still alive in salt water after a day. Guppies can do brackish and possibly marine conditions too.
    Using mollies to cycle in a marine aquarium is a good idea, I once used monos. When the tank had cycling issues, I just moved the monos back into fresh water until the marine tank balanced out.
    The down side about using molies to set up a marine tank is that eventually your true marine fish are going to kill your mollies. I can't say why, but it happens more than not... so pretty much consider them cheap and expendable atarter fish.

    I havent watched yet but this reminds me of an experiment me and my dad were conducting from the ages of 6 or 7-8. We started out with all the fish being in freshwater, and over time like after the course of a month we'd add a total of a teaspoon of salt into the tank. And we did that for a year and all the freshwater fish were still alive. They only died from hostile fish and old age. It was cool as hell.

    • @zanerianom1692
      @zanerianom1692 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its the same with any feeder animal that isn't quarantined. If he quarantined his feeders prior to feeding, there would be minimal risk of any casualties in his aquarium. He already knows the risks with feeders. He just wants to do what he wants since those are his aquariums. And they do not label them feeder fish because it is cheaper. They label any fish feeders if those arent their best selling or best looking fish. Most people dont go to pet shops to purchase goldfish or minnows unless its for feeding.

    Mollies used to be the standard for beginning a saltwater aquarium. Back then it could be difficult to cycle a new marine aquarium but the mollies kicked things off and they were very inexpensive.
    My very first reef tank was started with 2 black and 2 gold mollies and I don't remember them losing their color at all of course, that was in 1987 so it's been a minute.
    I've actually been toying with the idea of starting a new reef aquarium... Haven't had any saltwater aquarium in 20 years... and if I do, a few mollies would be the only vertebrates in the tank.

    Thanks for educating some people mollies and sword tails are actually brackish fish naturally so salt water is easy acclimation for them they actually have a harder time and generally shorter life living in fresh water only. Many fish thought to be fresh water can be acclimated to at least a low level of brackish water like your Angel fish for example I have a 250 gallon brackish thank that I keep monos and Angel fish in along with a fire eel very large plecho a ghost knife and even a green puffer with some other various bottom dwellers. It's been up and running about 6 years no issues.

    Well, I have been treating 1 of my Mollies to a salted quarantine tank for a few wks. I think he has some kind of fungus. Anyway, although it seems like the treatment isn't working for the fungus, he seemed to be doing better. I stopped the adding the salt & he seems to be not doing as well. So, I think I'm going to continue with the salted water.
