    I'm an orthopedic surgeon. Looking at Optimus walk I think I am seeing the toes go up as his leg enters the swing phase. This is to get the toes out of the way of the ground as the leg swings forward. There appears to be an actuator in the foot. You were talking about the foot springing down as the leg pushes off. I'm not seeing that. Prosthetic legs with feet use a a device which captures potential energy as the leg moves rearward during gate. As the foot and leg start to move forward they come off the ground and the foot flexes down releasing some energy leading to a more natural gait. With a fixed flat foot, as was in previous videos, one has to walk "flat footed" or like a penguin shuffling. Foot dynamics are very important in gait and I knew they would have to do something with that.
    Also, humans walk with their knees bent to varying degrees, often 10 degrees or so. Optimus is pretty close, so to me it looks good. Another thing you might not realize is that a 6 foot human can walk through a 6 foot tunnel because of the knees being bent during walking. I've had several patients come in after knee surgery with a bandage on their head because now that their knees were straight they were taller. Optimus is getting closer.

      I just wish people would talk more about implementation of solutions for the automation problem which will lower human value to near zero and make the entire consumer Market collapse. This is why we will need a Ubi based off the total automated production percentage of the GDP and couple it with a automatic flat tax so large corporations can't avoid Taxation and have the whole system on blockchain with proof of work so the flat tax is easier to implement. The Ubi would be tax-free for the user if used on the issued card that is non-refillable by the user. This incentivizes a basic level cash-free economy without Force making it easier to track counterfeit supernotes. And the system is the closest thing to owning means of production that a free market can do. We can also change the natural born citizen status so citizens eligible for Ubi benefits must be born of at least one legal citizen as a biological parent. This creates more of a Melting Pot of cultures and puts up a money wall for the southern border crisis.

      @@AquarianSoulTimeTraveler The flat tax is interesting. Usually the tax system is based on profits. The problem comes with international businesses. If I sell a car in country A but make it in country B, which country should get the taxes? A big problem is which country pays for Directors and royalties? I guess you are thinking that it is easier to just count the robots in each country. However that is still not easy. One problem is how to define a robot. Is a robot arm taxed differently from a humanoid? Are spare robots taxed? What if the robot goes to another country for a short or long time? Are simple robots taxed the same as complex ones? Is an autonomous car a robot? How about an autonomous forklift. By using a flat rate of tax we are swapping one complex tax system for another complex tax system. I'm not sure there is an advantage. I agree with UBI which should enable consumers to consume as they currently do. Block chain is interesting. I have only seen it described as a way to avoid tax, but you pose it as a way to ensure tax. I suppose the Government would own the crypto accounting?

      @@robertwhite3503 any job that humans can do that a machine does is a bot. Tax them based on the value of the job and the amount of people displaced. Farmers use combines that steal thousands of low paying jobs a year. Tesla bot on the factory floor displaces 3-4 semi skilled workers each doing a 6hr shift. An 8 hour day is only 6 hours work. Humans waste a lot of time on breaks. Tax at 1/2 what a human would pay in labor tax. Put all that money into the UBI. Divide it by how many people are eligible to collect it. Let the IRS handle it all. Done.

    A couple years many people were laughing at Tesla for starting work on humanoid robots. Now everyone is trying to get into the game. This is another example of Elon being a visionary. I'm still optimistic that Tesla can lead in this field at least with respect to Figure. First, Tesla can put it into work in their own factory to prove out the technology with real-time feedback to the engineering team. Second, big consortiums like with Figure tend to get bogged down. Anyway, exciting times.

    Optimus Speed : If each step is 35cm and it takes 100 steps in 60 seconds, we can calculate the total distance covered in 100 steps:
    Total distance = 35cm/step * 100 steps = 3500cm
    Now, let's convert the distance from centimeters to kilometers:
    1 kilometer = 100,000 centimeters
    Distance in kilometers = 3500cm / 100,000cm/km = 0.035 km
    Next, let's calculate the speed in kilometers per hour (km/h):
    Speed = Distance / Time
    Speed = 0.035 km / (60 seconds / 3600 seconds/hour) = 2.1 km/h
    Therefore, the speed is approximately 2.1 kilometers per hour.

      Also most manual laborers do not walk that fast. Janitors, waiters, and other standing/walking don't have to walk that fast. The janitors have to stop and do tasks, the waiters might hit each other, patrons, or drop food (and break plates).
      One possible profession is Security Guards those with automated patrol systems typically have to walk 2 to 3mp while on a tour. However, wheeled and tracked robots are already replacing them.
      Where else do you see a high walking speed required? I think those jobs are probably better replaced by wheeled or tracked robots.

      I love the way you start off with centimeters, do a bunch of calculations, then continue ert to inches and feet. Why not start off by converting the centimeters in the beginning ? I will not be badgered into using the metric system by people who think they know what is best for everyone.

    Telsa should hire some animators part time to consult on natural movement. That might be interesting to spot some 'gaps' Tesla Bot may have. Feels to me the pacing of the lower body and upper body might be slightly off as well since its being trained separately. Nevertheless, great job to the Tesla team!!

    As an 81 year old man in excellent health except for osteoarthritis of the knees (yes I know new artificial knees would help, but not big on the operation for a variety of reasons) Optimus should not be walking like an old man - that is, should raise the ball of foot and land on heels with front of the foot elevated then flexing to ground to use the ball of the foot to propel forward. Until this flat-footed gait is fixed Optimus won't appear to be walking naturally. I have an exercise that helps me - stand a against wall, extend feet about a foot forward, and then raise front of your feet, using heels as a fulcrum. Repeat to build up to build up strength. Perhaps a device simulating that exercise would help Optimus get to the next level.

    This gait and the walking motion is so much better and smother. Walking is a great indicator of just how fare Tesla bot has came. And as you said so many movies being released by so many different robotics companies shows just how hot robotic development is right now. Tesla bot is at a tipping point with it's walking. As to turning it's more an ability of the robot to do what is called an about face in marching. Turn around in one smooth motion with little or no movement except the change of direction.

    It is likely NOT teleoperated and NOT autonomous but following a preprogrammed path. Teleoperated would mean - too unpredictable to hit the points, but telling it a path, then this is good demonstration of the walking mechanism. I wonder whether they will handle getting up (after falling) at some point - slipping or being pushed etc. are viable failure scenarios and a Robot has to handle this.

    • @TheTenzen12

      Well, we didn't see any effort on Tesla part in preprogramming their bots in first place, since from beginning they using their FSD as basis for everything. If they did go for preprogramming, they might not get even comparable result to just leaving it AI. At least that's what I think.

    I think the Knee bend is intentional for better balance, since it’s "muscles " won’t get tired, I’m assuming that it can straighten to get closer to things.
    The Head bobbing looks cool, as long as the Cameras can handle it. It would look Menacing if the Head were perfectly Stable though, especially when it can Run, Usain Bolts head doesn’t move much at all.

    This walking speed is not as slow as you guys make out. It is about 2 kph in metric. I am a reasonably active near 80 year old and walk at 5+ kph when exercising. I see many of my generation out walking at much slower speeds and this would make Optimus an ideal walking companion for them - and also able to encourage them to remain active by engaging in conversation with an AI connection through Starlink. I would like to see Omtimus recover from a fall and be exercised on uneven ground.

    Just to clarify, this is NOT teleoperated at a joint-by-joint level! We've had the tech to do that for over 2 decades now, but that's not going to happen here. To do that, the operator would have to be suspended in a rig that would cause the tilt of the operator's head to match the robot's head, with haptic slings to transmit forces to all of the limbs and hips. Perhaps this is teleoperated on a coarse grained level by someone just steering the Optimus with a game controller. EDIT: I also note, you used Heavenly/Tahoe and San Jose in the same paragraph as "near." From our perspective in the bay area, those 1st two are not near San Jose. (But from your perspective in Georgia, they might seem near relatively.)

    Still employs an inverted pendulum walking algorithm, which is old school. Most of the other humanoid competitors employ a "pogo stick" walking algorithm, which is the modern development algorithm for more nimble bipedal mobility.

I have not seen any bot that does that, they use the legs to facilitate a turn. What do you think? Big step forward in achieving a humnan like gant.

    Optimus walking speed is about 1.3 mph, but the average healthy adult walks at about 3 mph.
    "A large 2020 study into walking speed found the average to be approximately 3mphs. Another estimate, this time by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, put the figure between 2.5-4mphs."
    Still good progress, and no need to go any faster than three miles and 2.5 hour gets the job done.
    No need to ski or skate, but being able to handle stairs and uneven surfaces would be helpful.
    The real question is when can it do useful work. Most factory work doesn't entail that much walking.
