My worst was the jellyfish moment. I still have an exact fear of being in light blue, but low clarity water and all of the sudden there is a hoard of jellyfish surrounding me. I was once on a dock that I used to go to and put my feet in the water at a lot. I was about to put my feet in the water when I saw thousands of tiny jellyfish. It solidified my fears. I thought it looked familiar! I live in Florida and I’ve actually fed a nurse shark before. They were swimming near this seafood restaurant and the staff were giving them extra fish. Really the scariest part wasn’t the shark, but rather the fact I was leaning over an edge and I didn’t want to fall in fully clothed!
"[Whales] don't go that far down." That really depends on the whale, actually. Case and point: "In 2014, scientists named Cuvier's beaked whales the deepest diving animals of all when they tracked one on a dive to 9,874 feet (2,992 m). The dive lasted for 2 hours and 17 minutes, making this whale the longest-diving mammal on record as well as the deepest."

"Hey, there could be a shark under the water, because there CAN be a shark under the water" Well, to be fair, that's exclusively where there could be a shark.
@@breloommaster12 cetaceans are whales, it is literally derived from the latin name of whales: Cetus. Saying Dolphins arn't whales is like saying sharks arn't fish
Something interesting about what you said about the Orca. They actually don't attack people in the wild, only VERY few people have gotten hurt by a wild Orca, and there have been no deaths caused by a wild Orca. Captive ones, however, are a different story.
It has happened, but it's not well documented. There's a pod off the coast of Galicia that has been responsible for killing many fishermen up until the 1960's. The same pod still frequently attacks boats. Without evidence, the behavior is not recognized by the scientific community. The stories told to me were of people being killed and seldom eaten. Many fisherman back then used small wooden vessels and orca hunting was still in practice. Orcas are incredibly intelligent and probably formed a culture of retaliation.
@@dansalt-sfl I've lived in Galicia for almost my entire life and i just recently found out about the whole Orca problem, kinda fucking wild that there's like a militia of cetaceans in our coasts
@@dansalt-sfl I thought no one had been harmed from those orcas off glacia, there was just damage to boats. Im not very versed in the topic, but everything on the topic seems to say they're attacking boats, specifically ramming the rudder and it seems to be from 3 specific individuals. Do you know anything more about the killing of fishermen? obviously, it seems like a long time ago but I'm interested in learning more about it if theres a good source of info about it
For sure! I have thalassophobia but I actually love orcas and find them super interesting. It's no secret that they can be cruel to prey animals, but orcas are apex predators and nature is cruel that way. Regardless, they're extremely intelligent and their brains are very similar to a humans' when compared (true to dolphins as well).
The shark that appears in the video at 8:35 is actually a pretty inoffensive shark to humans. It is called the thresher shark, it has a very long tail (which can be seen in the video) with which they whip their opponents in the water (mainly smaller school of fish) in order to stun them and then eat them whole.
@@arstotzka6520 normal whales can't swallow you, a whale-shark CAN swallow you but will spit you out, but a sperm whale can both shred you to pieces or swallow you whole. Sperm whales are large predatory whales, not filter feeders.
I remember, one or two years ago, seeing a video about people going missing in those swimming holes, and a theory that an undiscovered predator uses some underwater linking cave system to hunt and eat people. Wish I could find that vid now.
re: the shark boat video. one of the ways sharks investigate things is take chomps out of them, the shark was curious about the boat and pulled a baby move and just chewed on it a wittle to satisfy its curiosity
That's also what all shark "attacks" are, they just wanna know what you are, so they take a bite, not realising or caring that that bite might not be super good for you
13:19 It's a stitch, otherwise with how close the shark is to the surface, you'd see its fin sticking out of the water. If you look close before the shark gets right up to the camera, its top is actually out of the water in the second part, but in the first part there's no sign of it.
Fun fact, there was an instance of someone getting "swallowed" by a whale. The whale spit him out and he was fine, the worst thing that can happen to you if a whale does swallow you is your ear drums bursting, but luckily his were wrecked anyway since he was a professional diver.
4:20 jumping off that is almost instant death…omg- falling into the water from that kind of height, the water would basically be concrete or probably WAY harder… OUCHHHH 17:03 also this is frickin’ adorable!
Stuff like this is why people are so scared of sharks, while in reality, the chance that they'll attack or kill you is so super low, there's almost no reason to be afraid. In fact, less people have died to shark attacks in the past 100 years (about 1000, so that averages in about 10 a year) than the amount of people that die to mosquitoes every day (about 1500, so about 62 every hour)
BTW, orcas (or killer whales if you prefer) are only harmful in captivity, because the environment they have to adapt to, combined with the lack of proper infraspecial communication, makes them literally go insane. In fact, there's is currently no such thing as a deliberate wild orca attack on a human. There's probably a few accidents here and there, but it's never intentional.
In the wild in simple terms any marine attack is an accident including sharks. When we step in the ocean we step into their environment and have to accept that in the ocean we are not the top of the food chain by any means.
Holy shit I didn’t know captivity makes them go insane that’s so sad. You always hear how captivity only happens to those who are rescued and can’t go back and blah blah. But like for the solitude to make them go insane is such a sad thought
@@delilahdrummond4076 yeah and think about the perspective of these creatures in places like Seaworld, where the entire point of their existence is to live inside a tank that’s way too small while also being forced to perform tricks for humans who pay to come and laugh at you. It’s so f***ing depressing. No wonder they eventually snap and hurt someone.
4:52 actually they’d be okay, because there has been no reported cases of orcas attacking people in the wild, thought can’t say the same about orcas in captivity
I've been stung by sea nettles before. They burn and itch, but they're not dangerous. They just feel like a bee sting. Any time you're in the ocean and feel something brush past you, you hope it's sea weed; and then a couple seconds later the burning begins
Ey man you dont need to justify yourself for being afraid of water, everyone has something they fear and thats totally fine. Btw. I am afraid of bees, wasps and Hornets. I am highly allergic to them and i found that Out in my childhood under Not so good circumstances (near death).
8:38 yeah... So that's probably the worst thing you could do when a shark comes near you. He's lucky that it appears to be a harmless shark, but freaking out and jerking around in the water activates most shark's hunting instincts.
Someone else in the comments actually made a good point that that is a nurse shark and their scales are VERY rough. The bloke probably knew he needed to stay still but wasn't expecting the equivalent of sandpaper scraping against his bare skin.
5:24 There has never been a recorded orca attack in the wild. While captive orcas have attacked and killed, it's mainly due to the stress they feel in the enclosed areas and being isolated for so long. In fact, humans seem to be the one species orcas will not bother in the wild and many wild orcas are actually very friendly with people as they've interacted with whale watchers and free divers many times. Also orcas don't stay away from us because we're too big or what have you since there have been sightings of orca attacking and eating moose that swim in the ocean. They just decided that humans are the one species they won't bother.
Whenever there's a shark in the water while someone is swimming, the exact wrong thing to do is yell SHARK! You want the person to stay calm, because sharks are more likely to attack something that looks like it's struggling. The best thing to do is just to calmly say "come back in the boat" or something along those lines as to not worry the person.
YES GREG :D Also don't forget you can branch your content out more. It's alright if a few people get mad, if they're actual fans then they'll stay. Make sure you're doing something you like
@@47ratsinahoodie what don’t you understand? That there are more than just baleen whales that eat krill, like sperm whales who are toothed whales and eat large animals? Ya know? Like Moby Dick??? Or that someone actually named a whale “sperm whale?”
@@aerynstormcrow I mean, it was mainly a reaction of shock but while I did know sperm whales had teeth, I never put it together that they were carnivorous. That's a Mako, they're insanely fast and one of the most scary looking species, if you see one swimming in a figure 8 it's coming in hard for an attack, brace for impact. That said attacks are rare, as with the diver, the great white doesn't miss his head, it realizes he's not a seal and aborts otherwise the diver would be 100% dead.
4:30 is so hard to watch with the falling sensation, it just reminded me last night I had a dream about doing something where I had to hold onto something while it was spinning me through the air, like some kind of fair ride - when I reached for the rope or handle, I remember thinking I know this is a dream... But this is still going to suck. I would never have grabbed it if I didn't already acknowledge it was a dream. Anyway it yanked me into the air and I just remember spinning through the sky, and feeling the ENTIRE SENSATION of actually flying through the air. My stomach was twisting and I could feel the pressure of my bones and muscles being whipped around, pressure in my skull from the G forces, it felt like it was really happening, I closed my eyes and kept screaming that it's only a dream and to not let go, but it didn't make the real feeling stop. Idk what any of the rest of the dream was about, I think I checked out and woke up after that, but then I forgot until this clip when this guy jumps and the camera is spinning... Falling through the air is the worst feeling even in dreams, Idk why people enjoy that awful sensation.
I think you should play: beyond blue) its a deep ocean game more focused on looks and fun then scares its about diving deep looking for whales and other animals in the ocean its a really pretty game and you should play it!
God the ocean is so calming. I always felt that being far away from the land with your legs hanging above an empty abyss is so cool. I totally recommend if you are ever in the ocean or beach to swim beyond everyone else to where you cant see the bottom (if your a confident swimmer). Its relaxing in a way, it's just you, the water, and nothing else
my recent discovery of my thalassaphobia stems from the feeling of not being in control. like the fear of it. in the ocean, there are organisms that are better suited to the environment and can easily overpower you in the blink of an eye. this fear is kind of an add on to past trauma of mine. I’m a very small female who isn’t very strong and could be overpowered so easily it’s insane, so the ocean is also kind of like that to me. the fact that anything could happen and I couldn’t really do anything about it due to the fact that my human body isn’t adapted to the ocean environment. another place I see this fear is when I think of being a baby, like an actually infant. like you see parents tickling, playing around with, etc with their baby, who is obviously crying, annoyed, whatever. but it’s not like they can talk and tell them to stop or make them stop. I guess my thalassophobia just originates from the fear of not being in control lol, or the fear of the unknown.
Orcas? You mean Killer Whales? Those things are anything but innocent! If you are tlaiing about killer whales I can and will tell you how total psychopathic assholes they are
"It's kind of like 'Glass half full, glass half empty'." So long as there is water in the glass, there can always be whales, sharks, and other underwater terrors. _Always._
4:22 It's extremely damgerous to jump from this height...I mean he just had to fall a bit to the side or even let his feet be parallel to the water and damn, that would be some broken bones and hella lot of shock
I've had a fear of the ocean ever since I almost drowned as a kid. It's just kinda stuck there. I really love sharks up close, but seeing their shadows or seeing them far away with no plants, no nothing, it's just terrifying
I remember when I was younger I went to this cave called the Lost Sea and it was basically a huge cave with a big sea inside of it and we took boats across it with glass bottoms and there was something very unsettling about looking down and seeing a short glimpse of a blind fish pass under the boat in this pitch black water.
Reminds me of my experience but the boat is in a aqua park. Everytime a big fish passes by below us like my body just freezes and my stomach feels like falling. Even though I know I am safe on the boat but the fear is just there.
I'm not normally tripped out by this stuff but I was swimming in a lake with bluegill that weren't scared of people and they were nibbling at me and swimming all around me. I had to get out of the water its weird having all these little creatures so close to you
murky water is always a thing to fear... dont worry and its amazing that there are jellyfishes in all of the world and a lot of them are "venomous" so dont touch them... most of them will hurt more than killing you
Fear of whales here...well, fear of big things in the water. Seeing them above water is fine, seeing them underwater is a big nope for me. I’ve had several nightmares of being underwater and looking down into a deep dark abyss and suddenly the faint shadow of a whale head coming to swallow me wakes me right up. 😣
There's a video called "feeding frenzy" where someone gets a video of a sharks, dolphins, and birds swimming and diving around eating fish, when all of the sudden, a whale comes from down beneath, and you don't see it coming until the VERY last second. I don't know if it's a real video or not, but it definitely demonstrates the fear...
which shark is the question lol, the one that swam under the dude swimming was a nurse shark, which eat off of the bottom and are friendly, as for the great white, it looked like he couldnt see either and was probably coming to check out what the weird smell was, only to bump into the diver lmao.
I love the sign in the background with a random vague message that just lets you fill in the context. I loved this video - some of these have me giggling so hard
When I was younger, I LOVED playing Super Mario 64. One day playing I discovered a level, level 11. It was the level with the big pool in the middle and so on. The first time I tried to play it, my hands started shaking and sweating. I could never play that level without wanting to cry in fear. That was the level of panic that everything that was a large surface of water gave me. I can handle a game where I have to handle a ship, for example. But to this day I can't play a water game where you make me swim in the open sea and dive, I CAN'T.
I’ve been trying to watch more Thalassophobia content to slowly get over my fear. I’ve was able to get over my fear of bees by watching bee keeping videos but my fear of deep unknown water is so hard to push through! 😭
And what proof? What type of harm is a dolphin doing to humans intentionally due to their intelligence, in a group like the vid MAYBE but a single orca that shits scary
2:50 if you get stung by one of those jellyfish, they can cause a painful rash that lasts around 30 minutes! Symptoms may vary on the person and it can be more or less dangerous, but the main thing that happens is just the rash
“You think you’d have some sway over the ocean with this.” Nah nah. You shouldn’t have any hubris when you’re out on the water. Because Mother Nature will humble you REAL QUICK. Ask the Titanic. You can try to think positively. The chances of something bad happening to the boat are low. But never zero. Stay humble.
Humanity: we're super strong and advanced, we've tamed nature Nature, preparing a few mild hurricanes and tsunamis to flatten a few entire coastlines with: sure you are buddy
13:16 This one genuinley terrified me. Already, you have that huge wave, but it is slightly clear, not too bad. Right? we shift underwater and BAM! Shark. My heart skipped a beat, and I genuinely saw my life flash before my eyes. This simple little video is the scariest thing I have ever seen in any form of media, whether that be photo, film, book, or audio.
Yo, for sure. I'm actually more afraid of the animals in the water (especially big ones). When the camera flipped to that shark filling up the screen, I legit yelped like a kid and fell off my chair. F*** that!
Both subnauticas really helpd me with my fear of the deep dark water and such that I had. IN NO WAY WILL I GO DEEP IRL, but I am much better at seeing it and not being as afraid in video games and videos of it.
4:54 orcas dont have ill intentions towards humans as they arent interested in eating them, however, they can get aggressive and curious, as in bumping the paddle board and the person can fall, but other then that they wont eat you or try to harm you. (they can still harm you by accident but they wont do it on purpose)
I don’t think you should always relate your videos to your fear of the water, I and I’m sure many other people would watch you play other games. For instance I loved The Forest videos!
The unknowingness of the ocean, the giant wrecks, the animals, not seeing something until you’re right up on it or it’s right up on you, the random miles deep drop offs is so fear inducing but it’s so beautiful and fascinating. I hate it but I respect it and will never go on a cruise lol.
That part where the ocean water goes over the camera and almost immediately you see the great white shark face appear out of nowhere...Yeah I literally gasped loudly! That one really got me. Good video and awesome job man, keep up the great work!
Bit of a fun fact: there has never been a recorded orca attack on a human in the wild. Apparently they're cool until we start shit and put them in a pool.
I don’t know man, I always hear that they’re assholes, maybe they just don’t harm people. Here’s an article that I saw the other day that is why I called them jerks in the first place www.ranker.com/list/mean-orca-facts/eric-vega
@@GregBroDudeMan Oh yeah, they're terrible to other animals, they are even one of the only animals known to kill for fun. But it is nice to know that great whites have abandoned entire sections of ocean for over a year because they came across an orca.
@@GregBroDudeMan yes. Orcas and dolphins are assholes to other animals but they actually don't attack humans like that. Orcas have generational knowledge and one theory is that sometime in the past an orca hurt a human and then was hunted by other humans, leading to them learning to not attack humans out of fear of retaliation.
@@nitrogenbubbles4555 A faulty theory, considering that it's impossible for an orca to transfer such complex knowledge. They have no ways of communication except showing others how to do things, and maybe some simple emotions through clicking. Not attacking humans because other humans will come and hunt you down is a concept that can only be explained through words or a complex sign language, orcas aren't even close to either

You should look up mr ballen scuba stories people get trapped in underwater caves and die usually its sure to get blood pumping also there's one where a guy gets eaten by a whale
I have a fear of the water that goes to lakes, oceans, ponds, rivers- and even slightly to bath tubs full of water. If the water is clear it isn’t as bad and the smaller the body is it isn’t too bad. But I still have major anxiety around it. I think bath tubs freak me out more of because they always seem nasty but they still make me feel the “body of water anxiety” Which makes me ANGRY because I would adore to study marine life for a living. But I have to settle for herpetology, which I’m okay with too because I adore amphibians and reptiles
Dude react to some of MR Ballens videos. He has a lot of scary underwater stories. His Places your not allowed to go and people who went series has a lot of underwater horror.
3:27 O.e Nope. I'm gonna stick that one with all the others in the "Still super effing scary" category. Keep me off the ocean. ESPECIALLY if you're gonna show me what's swimming underneath me 😂
That shark biting the boat was honestly so cute! They use their mouths to explore and learn about things they don't understand, as they don't have any other way to interact with stuff. So he was likely just curious and got spooked! How cute omg
If you ever end up needing more content for this stuff, the book World War Z has a really descriptive chapter from the perspective of a scuba diver whose job was to clear harbors once humanity got their shit together. There's another one from the perspective of another guy who did cave diving in the catacombs to fight zombies. It was always just kinda spooky for me but man I feel like it would wreck you lmao.

In assassin's creed: Odyssey, you're expected to just free dive in the ocean and sharks regularly attack you. It made me anxious.

The goal is staying as calm as you can lol even if you're bit
@Raheel Frieslaar some are anyway!
Someone else in the comments actually made a good point that that is a nurse shark and their scales are VERY rough. The bloke probably knew he needed to stay still but wasn't expecting the equivalent of sandpaper scraping against his bare skin.
5:24
There has never been a recorded orca attack in the wild.
The women basically said ''Don't move, it's right there'' and he stopped moving and it touched him ahah
