My father follows the Torah in every aspect of his life; if the Jewish faith commands it, he believes it. When I brought up what was happening in Palestine, he said something that really stuck with me: "I don't care whose land it was thousands of years ago, I care that thousands of children are dying." He doesn't speak English, so this is a loose translation, but it's message still stands. If you have a heart, you will denounce the Israeli government's actions.
I'm an Egyptian American trans woman who has followed you on and off for years as we have so much in common. Thank you for this. As a jew in a small jewish community in europe I was always taught zionism. Since this genocide started, I feel like I'm losing a part of myself, as I find myself pulling further away from my family and jewish community. But I am glad that I am able to have my eyes open. Speaking out feels scary, so the Oscar's speech was so meaningful to me. It allowed me to share how I feel; disgusted that my heritage is being used to justify a horrific genocide. I live in a country where the majority are pro Palestinian, I can't imagine how difficult it is to openly hold this stance in the US. So thank you!

They were trying to educate college students on an issue we don't talk much about here and I'll forever be grateful to this man for giving me that flyer and allowing me to learn about what was going on. I don't personally know that many jewish people, but I've seen and heard so many being vocally against the genocide and israel that I refuse to believe they aren't more numerous that the zionists, and that's a thing we need to scream of the top of our lungs until it can no longer be ignored

Honestly, it's always stuck with me that back when I was barely aware of the conflict (genocide), some of the very first and most consistent support for Palestine and condemnation of the Israeli state that I heard was from American Jewish groups, and over the years since their efforts have been continually loud and pervasive enough that they're still the group I think of first when I hear about any pro-Palestine action, and I'm not even in the same country they are.

And Zionist isn’t a dirty word. It’s a descriptor. They’re trying to erase language that helps Jews against Zionism describe themselves. It’s happened on multiple times that people have called me antisemitic for simply using the world in conversation. My first thought is always that I don’t use the word for fun. I use the word out of respect for all of the Jewish individuals who are against the genocide, apartheid, and the colonial ethnostate. This is calculated. This is erasure of a movement largely made up from amazing Jewish people. Call me crazy, but I find that to be deeply antisemitic.
As someone who is half Asian, I do NOT accept those "historic claims" arguments. China has "historic claims" all over Asia, and would love nothing more than to assert those claims as violently as Israel currently is. We do not want to open Pandora's box.

Someone made an amusing satirical video about someone from Italy going to the city of Bath in England and claiming that Bath was a Roman city. You should look it up.
What Hamas did was despicable, but the response from the IDF has gone beyond that. Criticism of the Israeli government is not antisemitic. And regardless of the views of the Palestinian authority toward the LGBTQI2S community ,it doesn't mean we can't be empathetic to the plight of the people in Gaza. One would hope showing our love and support may change their views towards us, and if it doesn't, at least we know we are standing for humanity.

Well this one fucking hurts. DS9 criticises the exact type of propaganda the Israeli government uses right now. And to see its show runner fall for it is disappointing. I'm gonna try to see this as a warning of how effective propaganda can be, even to those who know about it, rather than a condemnation of Ira Steven Behr. Free Palestine
I'll just quietly point out that DS9 had some questionable morals, too. Like, looking back at Homefront/Paradise Lost, it can easily be read today as a warning against paying attention to threat response and doing your part in a global crisis. Sisko Sr. comes off as an anti-vaxxer today, and the episode treats his opinion as the correct one.
Right!?!? A DS9 writer!?!? So much of what is happening now is mirrored in the nuances of that show. I would understand if it was a writer from Voyager or something. ;) I kid. But wow. Really disappointing.
@@swishfish8858I don’t think of Homefront/Paradise Lost that way. There IS a delicate balance between personal freedom and social responsibility. Having ppl give blood at checkpoints is very extreme. Maybe it’s worth it, but living in a world where that was the norm would feel restrictive. Of course I’m one of the few lefties who was anti-mandate simply due to our system lacking the agility to allow for exceptions to the rules. I feel the same way about abortion. Yeah late term abortion could be immoral but when it isn’t ppl don’t have the recourse to get their needed care fast enough, and are harmed medically. So to me, in the American system we should just err on the side of personal freedom imho.

This is false and misinformation. the Hamas run ministry of health have totaled over 30,000 dead. they do not differentiate between hamas operatives and citizens. The IDF has said that they have killed 12,000 hamas operatives. If it were 13,000 children dead, and taking into account the 12,000 hamas operative dead, then only 5,000 of Palestinians dead are adult which does against statistics released from the hamas run health ministry of how many adults are dead. It's especially ironic when he had Dukat sit in a cave with Sisko and give every excuse for and rationalization of genocide that the Israeli government has given.
And then at the end, finally breaking his kayfabe and gleefully admitting he hated the Bajorans all along, hated their pride, hated how they never broke, and how he wishes he could ho back in time and turn the planet into a smoking, lifeless rock. And that's why Dukat "isn't an evil man."
@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan I'd say there are more similarities between the Bajoran's and Palestinian's. Bajoran's were not a stateless nomadic group united by a shared religion. The Israeli's don't oppress Palestinian's purely on their faith, in fact they even oppress native Palestinian's who are Jewish, it's on the basis that they are Palestinian that they are oppressed. Bajoran's also were not nomadic and were occupied rather than stateless, they were still Bajoran citizens not Cardassian citizens. You are right, of course, that conflating 'Israel' and 'Jewish people' is a common anti-Semitic tactic. However, it's also something that the Israeli constitution does, as does the right-wing of Israeli politics (including Netanyahu and Likud). All Jewish people worldwide are considered to be Israelis, or potential Israelis, and non-Jewish people in Israel are not fully seen as Israeli (Arab Israelis, for example, are treated as second-class citizens). Ironically, as currently constituted and governed, Israel itself _promotes_ the anti-Semitic idea that 'Jews are Israel and Israel is Jews'.
It’s something my partner has experienced personally. He follows Reformed Judaism and has been accused of “not being Jewish enough” or worse still compared to Jewish people who supported Hitler just because he acknowledges what’s happening to Palestinian people and doesn’t consider himself Zionist.
Likud has also used a variation of the "antisemitic dogwhistle" "from the river to the sea" in their rhetoric since 1977. Reminder that Netanyahu and his cabinet have said-openly-that they consider Hamas an ally in their attempts to deligitimize Fatah and the peace process generally.
Arab israelis have the exact same rights in israel as jewish citizens, I don't know where you get that notion from. As of today, there does not exist a single muslim theocracy where non-muslims have anything approaching equal rights, and there certainly isn't one where 20% of the population is jewish. I can't stand the selective outrage. you are all antisemites, the only reason you take such issue with the mere existence of a (democratic, equal-rights-having) 'jewish' state is because of this. I've been watching the original 90s X-Men show for the first time, and it's honestly disturbing how timely some of the episodes feel to contemporary events. The rhetoric of the Friends of Humanity feel like they could be Republican speeches if you replace "mutant" with "transgenders" (I know that is not the proper word, but it is one that Republicans would use). My grandmother is an interesting person, religiously speaking. She's a somewhat devout Greek Orthodox Christian (before she got too old, she used to go to church regularly, she baptized both her kids, she celebrates Christmas and Easter and all of that) but she also has a great deal of respect for Jewish people. She's often said that Jewish people serve the same God and will go to the same heaven. (and I think that has to do with her history with fascist occupation of Greece, since she was born right before it happened and really hates the Nazis) There aren't a huge population of Jewish Greeks but she is friends with quite a few. So, I asked her what she and her friends thought of what was going on in Palestine, and she told me about how one of her friends had cried and cried when he discovered what was going on, and how it changed her entire perspective on what Israel was doing. She said it in Greek, but roughly translated, she said that if Israel truly stood for Jewish people, then why would its actions make one cry? and that's a really poetic, beautiful way to put it.
As a Jewish person, I have shed a lot tears over this genocide (though I often feel too numb to cry about it). My Jewish family and friends sit around and talk about it and the emotions in the room are so difficult. It's difficult to let myself feel what I feel when I see the horrors that are being committed "in my name"... because what does my grief achieve? How do my tears help the people who are being massacred and starved? How dare I feel the release of tears when I'm sitting safe in my home and whatever actions I can take in support of the Palestinian people feel so small and trivial? Another feeling I'm struggling with is shame. I hate how this conflict is poisoning the way I feel about my own people. I've been so hurt and disappointed and enraged seeing what some people in my own community are willing to stand by... considering our history, the depth of betrayal that comes with seeing that some of the decedents of our ancestors are willing to commit atrocities with such terrible parallels... it hurts so much. I also know that so many people in my community are vehemently against what is happening, and are standing up for justice. I'm surrounded by those people, and they help me feel less ashamed. But I just wish there was more I could do. I have hardly any money, not much free time, my health is bad, I have a very limited social network, my local government representatives have no interest in what I think... I do what small things I can to help but it feels like nothing... feeling powerless and knowing that these things are continuing to happen every day... my tears fall, but my tears won't stop bombs or put food in children's hands.
Ya know what pisses me off ; In school we learnt how terrible the Nazis were how what they did is wrong full stop Yet here we are now as adults and it’s happening before our eyes in real time it’s so beyond me the fact that people saying Genocide is bad are facing career consequences for it I’m astounded by peoples ability to leave their humanity behind wtf
I don't think people really did learn much about the Nazis in school, I think it's because of how it's used as a political tool They don't want people to have confidence in their knowledge. Same reason we Don't have comprehensive education on slavery
There's a lot of contributing factors here, but one of them is that a lot of people walked away from those lessons thinking that Nazism was the same thing as fascism and that genocide looks a particular way. Very few people learn much about other examples of genocide, and they think "well, they're not literally being rounded up into death camps and being explicitly called an inferior race that needs to be exterminated, so it can't be genocide!". It's even more complicated by the face that Israel's formation was in part motivated by a desire to protect Jewish people from future genocide, so the Israeli government has made this a focus of their propaganda to make them seem like the victims instead of the aggressors.
Thank you for speaking out. The narrative that if you condemn what is happening in Palestine you are antisemitic has to stop. The horrific atrocities of the holocaust cannot be forgotten, but neither can they be used as a free pass to commit genocide.
Generally people don't do that. Generally only antisemtism is called out. Also, way more atrocities than the holocaust happened to jews. Such as the russian pogroms, the russians and japanese in Harbin China, the spanish pogroms, etc. None of that makes anything okay, but just know that the holocaust isn't the only genocide against jews. As an example, condemning the Israeli government's actions as war is bad, fine and not antisemetic. Calling what is going on the "new holocaust", antisemetic as its literal holocaust inversion. You can critize Israel without using words for things which harmed jews.

Between this letter and her promotion of AI Art, it's frankly amazing how quickly Tara Strong has burnt through the good will she's built up over the years...
so wild to see how quickly she’s fallen from grace with almost every opinion she’s voiced recently, especially since everyone had sympathy for her during the butch hartman controversy era. i almost met her at a con years ago but she had to cancel at the last minute; i’m so glad it worked out that way.
I love her VA work, and she has done performances that have meant a lot to me over the years. She was going to be at a con I was going to, and I was really conflicted about meeting her and getting a signature because of recent stuff. Luckily she cancelled at the last minute, so I didn't have to decide.
Get over yourselves. Tara is still the same person she's always been, and she's still one of the good ones. You really thought someone publicly identified as a Jew wasn't going to support Israel? Yes, I know there's a difference between supporting Israel's right to exist and supporting the Netanyahu government, but you don't give any consideration as to what Tara actually believes. She could easily not know the difference, and so she'd be merely misinformed. That never happened to enter your mind? There's also the fact that a lot of you don't merely support the Palestinian people and a two-state solution, but some of you actively whitewash Hamas as not a terrorist organization, and even seem to suggest "Well, Israel brought it on themselves, they're the BIGGER terrorists." In short, not all of you are as morally upright as you think. Some of you shill for terrorists or go to claim Israel has no reason to exist at all. I know, the fact that Europeans were so upset about the Holocaust and said "You should have a sanctuary, but we don't actually want you HERE" is infuriating and it would've saved a lot of strife if they'd had a place in Germany, for example. But what happened happened, and stop pretending it didn't. And remember, the two-state solution had its greatest chances at Camp David and then Taba, but between Arafat's intransigence, Barak trying to welsh on certain interim steps, and the actions of Ariel Sharon and Bibi to basically kill the process, we're where we are today. But in short, Tara hasn't change. She's the same beacon of positivity she's always been. Same way Ellen has always been the force for good she's always been, there's nothing two-faced about her. But the Internet can't appreciate nuance, isn't interested in truth. And you are taking progressivism to a place of purity culture, and eating our own, dragging our best allies down into the gutter. I'm not a right-wing figure by any means, and I'll certainly never abandon liberalism, but the fact that the movement has been hijacked by firebrands and led by modern day Robespierres is frightening to me.
A beautiful video, thank you Jessie. The only thing I take issue with is the excuse that Ira signed the letter because he's facing pressure from the Hollywood system to bend the knee. To wit, he's already made his bones! He's already retired! He will not need to worry about where he will get his next meal from for the rest of his very full life, and yet he saw fit to cosign pro-genocidal propaganda. I have no idea why, this is just as baffling a development to me as it was to you. But still, don't let him hide behind this racist pretext.
Actually, I don’t think he’s retired, he’s still currently writing on a scifi show for MGM+ (which is apparently a thing) starring Lina Heady. But your larger point stands.
he spoke out pretty late and as the first person who replied said, don't put celebrities up on pedestals, the reason why this video exists is because of our collective disappointment on how ignorant and hateful people we looked up to really are
A devastating personal case of this for me was Regina Spektor. She had been my favorite musicians for just over 10 years (since middle school!) and her music was full of so much love and kindness, but as it turned out these feelings didn't extend to Palestinians. She says she doesn't want innocent Palestinians to die, sure, but she refuses to name their killers and just blames Hamas for everything. 10 years of investment for someone so utterly blind to the world around her... what a waste.
i was so disappointed by her too. i only owned one of her albums but i still considered myself a fan. it’s frustrating to connect with someone’s work only for them to turn on the ideals they seemed to represent.
I think it isn't a waste if you enjoyed your time with that music and it meant something to you. If something helped you in the past and it's been exposed as bad, that sucks! But you had a good time with it and that doesn't get reversed now. I enjoyed so many games only to learn that the teams that made them were abused and underpaid, I don't play them any more, but the comfort I got and the friends I made are very real.
As a wrestling fan I learned long ago, you need to separate the art from the artist. If Regina Spektor (never heard of her before, sorry) has views that are contrary to yours, just listen to the music and not to her.
@@LordLOCeh with music it depends on what they make. Not all art can be separated because the nature of art is that *is* part of the artist. From an artist, you cannot always separate. How are you going to make music supporting survivors of SA and then turn around and blame Palestinians for being assaulted? It just doesn’t work. Your music is no longer genuine. Idk if she’s still like that as it’s been a while since I’ve engaged with her content but I wouldn’t doubt it because she was pretty strong about it.
Thank you for talking about this Jessie. I hold DS9 in the same regard as you and it's so deeply upsetting to me to see Behr seemingly become an Israel apologist. I truly hope he takes the time to self-reflect. As you said, it's never too late. And don't sell yourself short, you're doing the best that you can. It's not on you or anyone else individually to fix the world. It's on all of us working together and adding our voices. Love you friend, keep fighting. I'm behind you, always. Miranda
@@heinshaaine8153”Moral side”? You know, there will come a day where Israel’s apologists will be seen in the same way that those who look fondly upon similar colonial projects like Rhodesia are…weird, outdated, right wing crypto-fascists.
Thank you for this. As a revolutionary and a Jew myself, Kira Narys is someone I see myself in. DS9 positively portraying violent direct action was amazing. To see one of its main creators condemn just such action in the case of the PFLP is disturbing. That being said, this is one more instance in which “kill your heroes” is necessary. As Anarchists, we do not look for heroes. We look for good ideas. So while this stinks, I have no heroes to be let down with. Thanks for making this Jesse
Jewish anarchism is extremely based. I'm a Muslim libertarian socialist. I agree, you can't let yourself become so enamored with a person that you forget that people can and often do betray their own ideas and principles. It's good to like people, but parasocial relationships are often unhealthy. You need to be ready to grab the good and burn off the excess
It is! Y’know, for people actually doing real activism in the world. Surely you’re not suggesting that your 24/7 TH-cam commenting is making a difference?
I'd like to think I'm decently smart when it comes to a few things, but being Italian-American and raised Roman Catholic, I am a complete idiot when it comes to how it must feel to be a racial or religious minority in the United States. I said plenty of dumb stuff when I was younger, and still do once in a while, so I try and make it a habit to listen to people actually affected by a situation before running my mouth. My best friend is Jewish, and he's been anti-zionist ever since we started being old enough to have serious political opinions. Online, all my Jewish friends are anti-zionist. Every Palestinian I follow on Twitter or TH-cam or whatever who has spoken out about the subject has used their platform to plead empathy for the people in Gaza, and I have not heard one word from them broadly demonizing Israelis, let alone Jews globally. The only hatred I have seen is the regular ethnic cleansing language used by the Israeli government. People claiming that anti-zionism is antisemitism are deeply unserious people who are either willfully stupid, using claims of "antisemitism" in bad faith to try and create moral groundwork for being pro-genocide, or both.
I have a red line with this now. I've lost my best friend, it hurts but it's a tiny sacrifice. I've lost work. I don't care. No more hero worship, no more waiting on celebrities to speak out. Go to protests, BDS, donate to aid groups working on the ground, educate those who can be reached.
Tara Strong is an asshole for many reasons, but I definitely think her rabid tirade against Palestinians brought her assholery into the public consciousness.
To be honest I'm severally disappointed and upset by the lack of support of/speaking out about Palestine I'm seeing from bread/left tube creators. I can count on 1 hand how many I've seen even mention this. I'm also finding people who I used to enjoy call it a war rather then what it really is. Genocide. FREE PALESTINE
It's crazy seeing leftist youtubers I once followed being dead silent on a genocide. The ones who spoke most about oppression have nothing to say when it's right in front of them
Little aside, that I feel like applies here. In the original Marvel Secret Wars from like 1984 I believe, there's an interaction between Captain America and Wolverine where many of the heroes, particularly the avengers, are questioning why magneto was on the side with the heroes, to which he points out everything he's ever done has been in defense of mutant kind who was constantly facing discrimination & oppression. There's a point where Wolverine calls out Captain America for not really fighting for all people, or even all americans, because, up to this point up to this point, he's never taken up a fight alongside mutantkind. Captain America responds to that by saying "that's still no excuse for terrorism", to which Wolverine replies "Terrorist? That's just what the big armies call the little ones." That little scene is always stuck with me because it's kind of true. It's like when America tries to justify their occupation of the Middle East for several decades with 9/11. You caused many of the problems there for decades, and you're mad when they decide to try and get their lick back? Obviously that does not justify the deaths of innocents, but why did you only suddenly care about the deaths of Innocents when it was on your side? Where was this concern for the people that were already living there that you stole resources from?
Jessie, your wonderful moral and ideological consistency is great to see. I was so disgusted by so many who I thought were good people. Nice to know that my favorite anarchist isn't one of them.
Heartbreaking on so many levels. It's also galling to think of the probability that many of the people who currently back Israel have said "never again" in the past.
A line keeps coming back to my mind from the WWII-setting satire film Jojo Rabbit (a film everyone here ought to see if they haven't yet)... When young Jojo asks his mom what some dead people in a gallows did, she replies "what they could." I can't get that line out of my head. I hope nobody reading this dies or gets their life ruined for trying to help, but I hope some of you will also look for ways to do "what you can" in whatever corner of life you're in. Some of us don't have time or money or energy to spare. You're fighting other valuable fights, or just struggling to survive. That's okay too, take care of yourself as best you're able. There are way too many important issues in the world for any one person to reasonably keep up with all of them, and "what I can" is different for everyone. But if you are doing something or are actively planning to, thank you! 💜
Just because I'm afraid to directly point this out on Twitter: I don't think many people realize that Lindsay Ellis's last non-paywalled public appearance apart from book related stuff was on the last episode of Musicalsplaining where she just straight up referred to the situation in Gaza as a genocide. It was small but given that she's trying to avoid making controversial public pronunciations, the fact that even she thought that was worth saying I think is noteworthy regardless of anyone here's other feelings on her. I guess this is relevant in so far as a fav of mine turned out to be pro human rights and I’m grateful.
Back when she was on the site she refuses to name, when she reviewed The Lion King, she showed a clip of Israeli women showing off that wall (don’t know much about the state, so I’m assuming it’s the wall blocking out West Bank or something) and saying it’s to “keep the Arabs out, like the hyenas”
@@d_alistair-years I’ve always believed that she’s too hard on her early work (which is currently only available legally through her Patreon, although a lot of it is floating around elsewhere). @Sofianunes12 Just wanna make sure you're aware that phrase has genocidal undertones. I'd heavily recommend against using it. It refers to the entire area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, which includes all of modern-day Israel. Edit: Jesus, I got so much backlash for sharing a piece of historical info that can easily be verified with a basic level of research. The fact that so many of y'all responded to that by trying to throw offensive "gotchas" about colonization and genocide at me should really be a cause for some self-reflection on your parts.
@BlueBeetle1939 It doesn't. I don't think the vast majority of people using the phrase "From the river to the sea" support genocide, but the phrase itself describes the entirety of modern-day Israel as "Palestine," which doesn't imply very good things.
Honestly considering how poorly Ira handled the mistreatment Terry Farrell was experiencing on DS9 (I still facepalm whenever I watch What We Left Behind and he goes “oh I didn’t know that was going on), I’m not surprised that he’s this big of an asshole
Yeah, and I didn't just see that there...there's a unofficial "history" of Trek ("The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years...") where it's also talked about and kinda glossed over in my opinion. If you're the showrunner, you should be running the show and know things like that about your principle actors.
Mark Hamil disappointed me supporting Israel; that said he at least clarified that Palestinian people are innocent, and spoke out when Mehdi Hasan was fired for pro palestinian views. He at least acknowledges that Pro Palestinians shouldn't be fired for speaking out.
@@Peasham I don't know. I would have assumed he wouldn't if he stated that they were innocent. I generally avoid celebrity news entirely so I first heard about it in the comment section here just an hour or so ago.
@crosana01 if you still support Israel after this you support the genocide of the Palestinian people as Israel cannot exist without the extermination of Palestinians from their native lands as we see developments already happening on the gaza strip and more settlements in the west bank

Oh for sure. I’ve talked about that elsewhere, her books are littered with signs that point to her white feminism and elitism. But the base message of the books is (surface level to be fair) anti fascism, something she seems to not understand.
To be fair, there's a lot of people who think they say "pro-Israel" and don't mean "pro-Netanyahu" or "kill the palestinians." I'm against Netanyahu and Hamas both. I also have sympathy to the victims of the terrorist attacks while wanting the bombings to stop.
What's different between 'pro-israel' and 'pro-netanyahou'?? Majority of Israelis actually agree with majority of Netanyahou policies, Netanyahou and likud constantly top the polls in elections. @@bothi00have you not been seeing the massive anti government protests going on over there? People hate Bibi in Israel, they're calling for his arrest! While I do agree with you, fans can also be assholes, for no good reason. I used to be a content creator, and due to something that started with sexual harassment by one of my fans, and in order to avoid drama, I kept everything private, and by doing so I had people throwing me all kinds of personal attacks. I ended up quitting being a content creator over it. But I do remember telling several people, that I didn't wanted people to fan over me or my work, all I wanted was to people treat me with respect. Goes both ways.
I find it very interesting that a lot of the people who signed the letter condemning Glazer are a lot of nobodies and has-beens, while the counter letter has some of our brightest actors and creators, like Phoenix, Joel Coen and Elliot Gould.
We absolutely need to actively push our 'heroes' to fight for humanity. We need a community that will fight against genocide on the basis that genocide is never okay. It's never okay!
I have been against the Israeli government's brutal actions since the 6 Day War in 1967. I refer you to Miko Peled and Breaking the Silence for how Israelis actually feel who are not allied with Netanyahu. As for Star Trek it always surprises me when creatives don't hold the same positions as their scripts or characters do. Perhaps it is time to remember that these are actors who play many roles that they may not personally agree with. It is upsetting to find that people you admire don't hold the values you thought they did but hold to the Star Trek values yourself.
I'm Israeli, and a leftist. I'm areligious now, but I was raised fundamentalist Orthodox Jewish, in a community that is fervently Zionist. To this day I am still finding loose threads and lies to unlearn as I try to become a more compassionate person. I actually had to wait a few days before watching this video because I just... only have so much energy to stomach even more tough ideas when I'm literally surrounded by propaganda 24/7 and have been for six months. It's exhausting to fight back, constantly, to try and outmaneuver my own government. x . the genocide is inexcusable; no genocide is ever excusable. It's characters like Kira Nerys and Ambassador G'kar who have helped me open my heart to those who are 'other'. And really, Israelis and Palestinians are not so different. x. In theory, "existence is resistance", the fact that I refuse to bow down or to curl up and die as a trans, leftist Israeli is already something, but I feel so much guilt for not doing more.
I am sorry for the difficult cognitive process you're going through right now. I think it's hitting Israel right now, because Israel is a relatively new country (only 76 years old), whereas other Western colonialist nations, like the US, like Australia, like most of Western Europe, have been oppressing and condemning other nations across the world, for decades and even centuries. Israel is not alone here. Many other nations have a litany of sins against their name. Germany, for instance, has quite rightly had to grapple with their forefathers' role in the Holocaust and murder of 6 million Jews, so, please do not feel that it is only Israel that has blood on its hands. Jews have been historically sinned against far more than they've sinned towards others. Alas, however, it is Israel, a Jewish nation state, that is perpetrating acts of mass murder right now, which is emphatically NOT to condemn the Jewish diaspara or even all Israeli Jews.
Thank you for this. It's always a heartbreaking thing to see many a creator/actor I've enjoyed turning out to have ulterior motives. Regardless, it's still ceasefire now and forever.

Jonathan Glazer wasn’t misinterpreted. He was brazenly lied about. Nobody misconstrued such a clear and explicit message. They knew what they were doing was dishonest. It’s not a misinterpretation. It’s a lie.
Well, I feel like a moron now. But it's been a growing process with me. I unironically thought Israel was trying to fight Hamas and that Hamas was using innocent people as shields. I thought there was this huge anti-Semitic problem where people were trying to justify Hamas and what they did, what they have been doing for years. I was disgusted and appalled, but nobody has explained the conflict to me like this before. I appreciate you opening my eyes and I hope one day I can be forgiven for my misunderstanding.
We've all been there, there is a huge anti-Semitism problem that has really fucked up our country and others So it's hard to even talk about this stuff.
I completely get it. I live in America, and in high school, I was taught that Isreal was the benevolent side of the conflict and that Palestine was irrational and refused peace. I'm not exaggerating. It was part of the curriculum, and not just some random teacher pushing their views. It's not common sense, and these people are actively being suppressed and of course, the oppressor narrative is what permeates.
I always saw the Bajorans as space Jews just getting out of the Holocaust, dealing with creating a civil society after a massive oppression. While there are sometimes references to other atrocities (comfort women, for example), the most continuous comparison was to the Post War Jewish people. There's also the frustration of how much of religious tradition to incorporate into a modern secular society in the name of preserving culture.
@user-lk7cv8vg7rThe quotes Jessie mentioned in the video suggest that most of the creators thought of the Bajorans as space Palestinians but one did seem to think/consider them to be space Jewish. Palestinians make a lot more sense given they were already there though, for it to map properly to the Holocaust Israel would have had to already exist and be occupied by the Nazis
Yeah, him signing the letter is completely baffling - especially when the other lead creatives on the show literally cite Palestinians as an influence for Bajorans.
Thank you for your courage and for sharing your thoughts, even at personal risk. I wonder if we could be proactive and see if we could get a pro-Palestine letter signed by the trek community. I’m personally bewildered and disappointed at George Takei’s silence, given his own personal experience in a concentration camp as a child though I know that’s a painful memory.
First video I've watched from you since hearing you get mentioned by a few other creators I watch. Small as your platform may be, it is always a move in the right direction to use what power and popularity you have in the name of the greater good when you can. As far as I'm concerned, it definitely puts you ahead of the curve and makes you alright in my book.
I recently resigned in protest from a Star Trek roleplaying group and fan club based in the Second Life metaverse because of the culture of bullying, bigotry, favoritism and other forms of prejudice that I have seen developed over the nearly 15 years of me being a member there. It was a painful decision, made so by the fact that group leaders subjected one of their own to what could be amounted to a lenient penalty compared to how they have treated others for the same, all the way down to even alleged less infractions. My friends that are of and supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community no longer felt safe in that group. But seeing that group leaders did not take into account the wellbeing of other members, it made my decision to leave very easy. It’s tragic that despite Star Trek going strong for nearly six decades, there are still those who miss the point of it all.
I'm walking a thin line with my bad mental health at the moment of trying to stay informed and keeping myself safe from self harming behavior. And while I wouldn't dare to explain what is going on to someone else not knowing it, I know one thing for sure: Attacking and killing innocent civillians is morally wrong. Full stop. From what I heard, Israel's military does not care if they bomb schools, hospitals or even refugee camps. These are not the actions of someone defending themselves from a threat or trying to find the hostages and get them back alive. I'm all for countries who get invaded and attacked, that they should be able to defend themselves against an aggressor to keep it's own people save. But killing innocents in masses is no self defense! And I don't understand how this is a controverse standpoint to take.
@@thewizard1 Don''t be a dick. Some of us are burnt out and depressed, so are avoiding actual footage of children dying. That doesn't mean we're unaware of Israel's genocidal campaign. I am ticked about this whole discussion for many reasons. As horrible as what is happening in Gaza is, there are far worse things happening all over the world right now that don't happen to be on TikTok. Everyone is screaming about Gaza, but more than 45 armed conflicts are currently taking place throughout the Middle East and North Africa in the following territories: Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Yemen and Western Sahara. Syria is the most affected country in the region. Several multiple and overlapping conflicts are taking place in the country - involving numerous armed groups who fight against the government and against each other -, along with two military occupations and three international armed conflicts Africa comes second in the number of armed conflicts per region with more than 35 non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) taking place in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. Several armed groups - fighting against government forces and/or against each other’s - are involved in these conflicts. Asia is the theatre of 19 non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) involving 19 armed groups. These are happening in Afghanistan, India, Myanmar, Pakistan and The Philippines. Two international armed conflicts - between respectively India and Pakistan, and between India and China - are also taking place in the region. But, because none of these are on TikTok getting live streamed, no one in America gives a damn. Russia is STILL waging war against Ukraine as well! Why is no one still outraged about that? Because China is an ally of Russia, China owns TikTok, and China wants you all focused on Israel and ignoring what Russia and China are doing right now. Yes, absolutely protest Israel's actions in Gaza and rightly so. BUT, also don't take your eyes off of the real powers in the world and what they are up to. They are using your distraction to take over places without you noticing.
You should do a video on the genocide and famine in Sudan 🇸🇩 nobody seems to even care about them what so ever. It’s like everyone forgot about Darfur once it wasn’t popular to talk about anymore
He wasn't my favourite, but I used to watch a lot of David Pakman, because I trusted him. Then he went all out for the invasion, and I had to check out.
It's beyond me why anyone would want to watch Pakman to begin with... 1. His content is quite honestly, boring. 2. He has the insane paranoia that TH-cam is plotting against him, and keeps making dumb videos how TH-cam is out to get him, making ridiculous conspiracies about it. 3. He allows himself to be sponsored by dubious products/companies. I understand that he has bills to pay, but there is a red line... 4. I didn't even need to watch Pakman to know he would be zionist or pro-Israel. It's on brand.
Thank you for making this. I had a conversation with my grandmother about Palestine just a few hours ago, which left me in tears. She sees it as a simple conflict, talking about the political ramifications and how “Palestine elected Hamas and Hamas attacked first,” implying “technically, it’s their fault it happened in the first place.” And it’s like… Grandma. I love you. I know you lived in Israel for a time and you don’t want to acknowledge that they can do such a horrific thing when just a few decades ago it happened to them, especially bc we’re Jewish - but Grandma, what the FUCK is so difficult about looking at 10s of THOUSANDS of people being SLAUGHTERED and intentionally STARVED and not think that a ceasefire is necessary. To not even entertain the idea that this is a genocide. And I feel dumb sometimes, hearing her and my mom list all of these facts and the history surrounding Israel and Palestine, like I’m just a child masquerading as someone with a valid opinion and stumbling over my own talking points. But this video helped to re-center me. I never wavered in my belief that this is a genocide, but being surrounded by people putting down whatever I had to say on the matter and treating me like a child who didn’t know any better was really getting to me. So thank you, for re-clearing my vision. And for those who are reading this: don’t stop talking about Gaza. NEVER stop talking about Gaza. Donate to trust worthy relief funds, do your daily clicks, and go to protests if you’re both physically able and safe to do so.
Well if you listen to valid reasoning you can understand that fighting a war does not in itself constitute a genocide. all the while you can still critisize this war as disproportionate, and urge the partys for a ceasefire. but if you dismiss any rational argument as "technical", keep your beliefs unquestioned, and ONLY listen to your emotions, you are suspeptible to manipulation by people who don't really care for the Palestinians but use their suffering to do you harm. I am not saying, stop showing compassion for all humans. but please double-check on your sources. I have to say, having watched your whole video I'm actually relieved. I expected to find out that Ira had said horrible and defamatory things about the Palestinian people or supported their destruction or said that they should be wiped off the face of the earth. My heart wrenched, and I braced for yet another one of my heroes to be revealed as an ignorant, bigoted monster. Imagine my relief when the video ended, and the only thing I learned is that he signed his name to a letter. A letter that offered very mild criticism to some controversial comments that a director made. I think we want to be kind of careful that we don't become so apprehensive about our heroes becoming reactionary that we become reactionary ourselves. I read the letter that Ira, and 1,000 other people signed, amd none of it expresses support for a genocide, none of it expresses support for civilian deaths, none of it even directly relates to the current conflict. It objects to the state of Isreal being morally conflated with Nazi Germany. I put it to you, the author of this video, that it is not morally reprehensible to balk at Isreal being portrayed as morally equivalent to Nazi Germany. It's possible to balk at this *and still be opposed to what it's currently doing*. It's possible to believe in good faith that Isreal's national security necessitates military action and still be opposed to how it conducts that action. The point is, what was contained in that letter are statements for which there are many points of view, and we don't know why Ira signed it or what he agreed with in it, because he hasn't made any public statements or used his position or platform to advocate for or argue for anything, that I know of anyway, if he had I assume it would have been in this video. All he did was sign a letter that generally supports Isreals right to exist and defend itself. That isn't the same as supporting genocide and it isn't morally reprehensible. JK Rowling publicly supporting hate groups and giving financial support to fascist groups and expressing open transphobia is morally reprehensible. Ira Steven Bayer signing his name to an open letter is not even remotely the same. Ira didn't give support to anything or anyone, he signed his name to a letter that took issue with how Isreal was portrayed. That isn't even remotely the same thing and it certainly isn't morally reprehensible. Good video, I like your channel, I respect your point of view, subscribed.

Or maybe understanding them too well. What happens when reality doesn't present any nobler motives to find or see people standing up for after all this time? Never mind a particular abundance of good guys.

Nobody is immune to propaganda, the same applies to scams and other forms of social engineering.
I'll just quietly point out that DS9 had some questionable morals, too. Sisko Sr. comes off as an anti-vaxxer today, and the episode treats his opinion as the correct one.

The Israeli's don't oppress Palestinian's purely on their faith, in fact they even oppress native Palestinian's who are Jewish, it's on the basis that they are Palestinian that they are oppressed.

"Muslims, Jews, Atheists & LGBTQ will join together in understanding each other" ....is such an oxymoronic statement. Traditional religious Muslims and Jews, just like their Christian counterparts will never join with the likes of LGBTQ, precisely because they understand LGBTQ. All Abrahamic religious in their historical and traditional practiced form is put simply anti-LGBTQ in the modern world. LGBTQ people advocating for the rights of Muslims, jews and Christians should know that they wont be extended the same favor, when they themselves are on the receiving end from any of these religious folks.
Ya know what pisses me off ;
In school we learnt how terrible the Nazis were how what they did is wrong full stop
Yet here we are now as adults and it’s happening before our eyes in real time it’s so beyond me the fact that people saying Genocide is bad are facing career consequences for it I’m astounded by peoples ability to leave their humanity behind wtf
And not just "humanity" and when for the same reasons, we should all be vegan for the animals, environment and health?
@TheSapphireLeo This comment I'd phrased weirdly, can reiterate what you retrying to say?
Thank you for speaking out. The narrative that if you condemn what is happening in Palestine you are antisemitic has to stop. The horrific atrocities of the holocaust cannot be forgotten, but neither can they be used as a free pass to commit genocide.
Generally people don't do that. Generally only antisemtism is called out. Also, way more atrocities than the holocaust happened to jews. Such as the russian pogroms, the russians and japanese in Harbin China, the spanish pogroms, etc. None of that makes anything okay, but just know that the holocaust isn't the only genocide against jews.

Between this letter and her promotion of AI Art, it's frankly amazing how quickly Tara Strong has burnt through the good will she's built up over the years...
that sizzling, popping, cracking sound you just heard was the good will she'd built up with me burning away.
so wild to see how quickly she’s fallen from grace with almost every opinion she’s voiced recently, especially since everyone had sympathy for her during the butch hartman controversy era. i almost met her at a con years ago but she had to cancel at the last minute; i’m so glad it worked out that way.
She's also an antivaxxer.
There's also the fact that a lot of you don't merely support the Palestinian people and a two-state solution, but some of you actively whitewash Hamas as not a terrorist organization, and even seem to suggest "Well, Israel brought it on themselves, they're the BIGGER terrorists."
In short, not all of you are as morally upright as you think.
Once again Pedro Pascal continues to be one of the best people in hollywood. Pro Palestine, pro trans, etc. etc.

he spoke out pretty late and as the first person who replied said, don't put celebrities up on pedestals, the reason why this video exists is because of our collective disappointment on how ignorant and hateful people we looked up to really are
A devastating personal case of this for me was Regina Spektor.
I was super in BANSHEE’s music for a while until she came out being super Zionist. She makes a lot of music supporting SA survivors.
Oh say it ain’t so
Thank you for talking about this Jessie. I hold DS9 in the same regard as you and it's so deeply upsetting to me to see Behr seemingly become an Israel apologist. I truly hope he takes the time to self-reflect. As you said, it's never too late.

This is good advice, to look for good ideas, not for heroes.

What does Antizionism mean

OH NO!!
To be fair, Tara Strong has already been shown as an asshole even before her Zionist beliefs
Yeah, that one stung too.

Tara Strong is an asshole for many reasons, but I definitely think her rabid tirade against Palestinians brought her assholery into the public consciousness.

Tara Strong's behavior has been such a disappointment. One of my favorite celebrities for years. I can't think about her the same ever again.
I’m disappointed by both her and Mark Hamill.
The ones who spoke most about oppression have nothing to say when it's right in front of them
so many actors and voice actors too. at least Guillermo del Toro is still cool. selling signed books for a palestinian charity right now
As a Jewish American who loves Star Trek and condemns Israel, I say: Bravo. I couldn’t have said it better.
That's just what the big armies call the little ones."
That little scene is always stuck with me because it's kind of true.
Justice and freedom for Palestine
Jessie, your wonderful moral and ideological consistency is great to see. I was so disgusted by so many who I thought were good people. Nice to know that my favorite anarchist isn't one of them.
Heartbreaking on so many levels. It's also galling to think of the probability that many of the people who currently back Israel have said "never again" in the past.
A line keeps coming back to my mind from the WWII-setting satire film Jojo Rabbit (a film everyone here ought to see if they haven't yet)...
When young Jojo asks his mom what some dead people in a gallows did, she replies "what they could."
I can't get that line out of my head.

@Sofianunes12 Just wanna make sure you're aware that phrase has genocidal undertones. I'd heavily recommend against using it.
It refers to the entire area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, which includes all of modern-day Israel.

The fact that so many of y'all responded to that by trying to throw offensive "gotchas" about colonization and genocide at me should really be a cause for some self-reflection on your parts.
@sushiroll3795 why to you does "freedom" equate to "genocide"?
I keep seeing this but nobody provides any information on where or how I can get a free Palestine.
@BlueBeetle1939 It doesn't. I don't think the vast majority of people using the phrase "From the river to the sea" support genocide, but the phrase itself describes the entirety of modern-day Israel as "Palestine," which doesn't imply very good things.

I completely get it. I live in America, and in high school, I was taught that Isreal was the benevolent side of the conflict and that Palestine was irrational and refused peace. I'm not exaggerating. Imagine creating the bajorians, which are basically space palestinians, just to turn your back on actual palestinians because reasons
in the mind of zionists, the Palestinians are usually seen as the occupiers. Like, we effectively not know which group is which in this metaphor
And while I wouldn't dare to explain what is going on to someone else not knowing it, I know one thing for sure:

Several multiple and overlapping conflicts are taking place in the country - involving numerous armed groups who fight against the government and against each other -, along with two military occupations and three international armed conflicts
Africa comes second in the number of armed conflicts per region with more than 35 non-international armed conflicts (NIACs) taking place in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.
America is the "real power".
*Thank you for speaking up for Palestine, Jessie!* You are consistently in favor of human rights and I applaud you for it!
Thanks for this as a Jewish convert I really relate since I’ve lost friendships because I was so critical of Israel to him, Free Palestine!
I've never been this early to one of your videos before. It feels... alien.
I'm a massive DS9 fan and when I saw the thumbnail with Ira Steven Behr, my heart sank. 😒
You should do a video on the genocide and famine in Sudan 🇸🇩 nobody seems to even care about them what so ever. It’s like everyone forgot about Darfur once it wasn’t popular to talk about anymore
Why should she do that? If it's not the Jews it ain't news
And that's the sad truth.
thank you for always standing up and speaking up
Genocide is wrong no matter which side it's happening to and I can't believe some people think saying that is somehow antisemitic.
THANK YOU! For your goodness and bravery here.
Thank you
He wasn't my favourite, but I used to watch a lot of David Pakman, because I trusted him. Then he went all out for the invasion, and I had to check out.
The Pakman situation is... Disconcerting.
I checked out of Pakman before October but somehow it doesn’t surprise me that he went that route… Still disappointing but it kind of adds up.
There is much disinformation going around social media, and as they say, half the truth is often a great lie.
Wishing you a reflective and meaningful Passover and Earth Day.
Oh ofc. I get that. I’m looking at multiple sources as it continues, I just have yet to look at the history in particular.
@@xxchesire_catxx8176 Cool. If i may recommend the historical writings and analyses for example by Tom Segev and Eva Illouz. Scientifically valid, never afraid to address inconvenient truths about Israeli politics, while very accessible, nuanced and left-leaning / humanistic.
@nobody-iq5ml oOOO sounds perfect. I’ll get on that right away
@@Peasham i am heartbroken, how Jessie formerly my favorite youtuber now attracts people who openly just want to destroy Israel. And don't tell me you don't want Israel destroyed, because i read how you use this platform to deny Israel any right to exist.
Also, you could just look at what Eva Illouz and Tom Segev had to say instead of defaming them by guilt of association.
Every voice is important. Suffering from innocent people is and will ever be wrong. Children should have a right to grow up in safe environments.
I cannot tell you how much or how hard my heart broke hearing this about Ira Steven Behr.
.....fuck.
Thank you for doing this, for using your platform to try to help to voice support for those who need it so much right now. Even people close to me, some family, believe the Is. gov's lies, even claims made despite seeing photos & video that contradict directly, often the black&white idea of "good" versus "bad" _people_ - in spite of what those "good" people do! And no people deserve that big "G". I sigh because I can't even get my own family to listen, and the media they choose still serves that narrative (still with the passive voice). I don't know what it will take for things to change, but it must change! People are suffering! And dying! And their homes and history being erased, literally bo|\/|bed and bulldozed away!
Thanks for saying this, Jessie. You (and Glazer) make me feel less alone as a Jew who supports Palestinian freedom, dignity, and human rights.
I just rewatched DS9 because I've been wondering about the alignment with what's been happening in Gaza. I cannot wait for you to release your video and hopefully book about it. I appreciate you SOOOO much, Jessie
I just don't understand how people can have so little empathy
I do have empathy, plenty of it for both Israeli and Palestinian victims. Do you?
Thank you for speaking out its so important ❤️ I still hope for peace every day
