    Brussels is great! Chez Leon is a restaurant near the Grand Place. It has two doors. One door opens to the restaurant which has tablecloths. The other door opens to the restaurant without tablecloths. Same kitchen! Superb mussels. Healthy light food. Do visit Avenue Louise for shopping. Happy New Year!

    • @amusingaida
      @amusingaida  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that sounds like a great tip... I'll be sure to try those doors at Chez Léon (well the door to the part with the tablecoths). Louise I know pretty well -- I've been shopping up and down there (and La Toison d'Or) but not on this trip, so no video of that. But the sales start in a couple of days! Happy New Year!

    All the beauty and interest of Paris and Berlin - without the freneticism of either. A much better place to live than either - and so much more interesting - but look below the surface. A real sity, a real home. Forget the EU - everything else, especially out neighborhoods - are gracious and lovely. please come visit.

      Brussels has its own charms. I wouldn't say it's as beautiful as Paris -- that would be exaggerating. But certainly its inhabitants and the general chill vibe it has are very appealing. I've been to Brussels several times and always had a really good time...

    Hi again Aida. Another great video. I hope you don't mind me asking but a couple of things I would be interested in knowing about is how the Marais came to be the Jewish quarter, i.e. its history around that time and also the history of the Cirque d'Hiver which I haven't a clue about but is such a lovely building. Thanks for all your hard work. Certainly understand if you can't take requests! Jenny from Australia

    • @amusingaida
      @amusingaida  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jenny, on the first part: Jews were living in the Marais as far back as the Middle Ages. Jewish people were kicked out of France in the late 13th century (one of several expulsions through the ages) but some held on, secretly. They returned to the Marais in the 18th and 19th centuries. As for the Cirque d'Hiver -- yes, so lovely (it started out in the mid 19th century as le Cirque Napoléon and was in turns a concert hall and movie theater until a circus family bought it in 1934... now it's a working circus, venue for various other shows and political meetings and things). Happy New Year.

    Never had Brussels on list to see...changing my mind. What a lovely old-european city! I find mussels very salty so never eat...but I think home location affects people's tastes...if you live near water where mussels grow...you grow up eating them. I didn't but you did in France. Bon appetit

    • @amusingaida
      @amusingaida  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brussels is gentle, laid back, a fine place to visit which lends itself to just feeling the European life rather than pushing yourself to knock off a list of monuments/museums that you think you're obligated to see. And it's affordable, especially in its many fine restaurants. As for mussels: once washed and with white wine (or beer or peppers or herbs) added, they aren't really salty at all. Delicious!

    You went to Brussels, even to cartoon museum and did not mention about Tintin, grave offence. 😮 how dare you ? 😢 I will ask Charles de Gaulle to punish you and Jean Paul Sartre to write against it ! 😅

    • @amusingaida
      @amusingaida  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, Tintin used to be VERY well known -- but the company that owns the IP rights to Tintin is a PITA. Even for people with a right ro comment or parody or present Tintin works in an educational context, they are known to harass or threaten legal action. The result is that the Smurfs are now the best-known cartoon property in Belgium because no one wants the hassle of fighting spurious and misguided legal notices from the Tintin right holders.... you can see this at the Comic Museum; virtually nothing about Tintin there. They have scrubbed themselves from the public consciousness.

      @@amusingaida this is really sad. I have been to Brussels three times but could not go. I heard there is a separate museum of Herge. Any how, Brussels is much smaller beautiful city and less chaotic compared to London or Paris.

    • @amusingaida
      @amusingaida  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prazbhat It's a corporate choice. Yes, there's a separate museum for that -- but that means those works can't be viewed in a context of other influential ones. It might bolster $$$ decisions but I find it a shame on a cultural level.
