Adriaan Verburg Nothing odd about it. The route from New York Penn Station to Newark Penn is electrified, but after Newark Penn, the Raritan Valley Line is not electrified, so the locomotive switches from electric mode to diesel mode at Newark when heading towards Raritan.
Well they're not starting up a pair of Caterpillar 3512C HD diesel engines. You have to start up the engines and get them running to a certain RPM to power the motors. I mean, it's not electric to electric. It's electric to DIESEL. Just keep that in mind. :)
Honestly, who knew it could get so loud so fast?
The sound almost sounds like Eurostar TMST’s Arrival
@@mr.conductorfromsts4204 IL RIGHT!
It’s probably because it’s starting up the Diesel engine
1:13 Does this loco has electromagnetic or pneumatic arc suppression, inside the main switch?
Locomotives having dual mode, diesel &electric when passing through tunnels.
This train goes to high bridge on the raritan valley line.
What is the difference between an ALP 45 and an ALP 46?
45 can run either diesel or electric, 46 is electric only.

46 has 2 sides you can operate from and is shorter than 45
Do we know why?
RVL is diesel only and must switch from electric to diesel in Newark.
Michael Garofalo Jr. Why though ? No electric lines in Newark? That seems odd to me.

I am surprised that it isn't electrified the rest of the way is all.
Perhaps you aren't from the USA? The majority of rail lines in America are NOT electrified.
Made in Germany:)
Sapsan RZD but 2 caterpillar diesels in it!
Very cool - takes a few minutes though, huh? As opposed to MN just being able to lower or raise their panties up at Pelham...even on the fly. :P
