I remember seeing this on Solid Gold and was like WTF is going on on! Wendy O Williams was literally insane when she did all those shocking stunts onstage during her live performances with The Plasmatics. She was truly the Priestess of Heavy Metal.
I saw this in 1981 in 7th grade and it freaked me the fuck out. Watching it now it's even more over-the-top than I remembered. Visually it's crazy but her VOCALS are completely anti-music. Solid Gold was mostly top-40 and on occasion they would show you something wild.
She was way ahead of her time. Her initials spells WOW. She was Madonna before Madonna came along. And just like Janis Joplin....Wendy O. Williams was an Original....nothing like her before her, nothing like her after her. Rest In Peace and Rest In Power, Beloved Wendy❤️💯🤘💪🥰
I absolutely love the contrast of the intro with the performance and then again with the Wendy & Madame outro. Together they capture something authentic about the early 80s for me, a time when TV was polite yet at the same time people were very open to all forms of alternative and kick-ass art music on mainstream TV when there were only a few channels and no Internet. Wendy you are missed.
Wendy showed up for this performance in her stage "clothes" which featured her breasts exposed in a leather top. Solid Gold refused to let her perform that way, and she refused to change. The makeup dept came to the rescue with a solution that satisfied both sides. They painted Wendy's breasts black! No one noticed. LOL. So in 1981 she became the first women to appear on US TV topless! LOL.
Holy Crap, my family ,when I was very young, watched this show every week. Missed this!!!!!! I would've remembered that!!! Didn't get into wendy until 1987
This would NEVER get aired on today's "uptight" television!!!! Truly VERY ahead of its time!!!! and that Mrs. Cleaver how's the Beaver joke was RAUNCHY as hell and somehow got past the censors!!!! Lol!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fantastic! I remember seeing this on the show back in the day and the next weekend going out and getting that record. And that was my introduction to the Plasmatics. Loved that crazy performance. RIP Wendy. Oh how I wish you were still here.
Now that's a real punk performance. Makes Iggy Pop look like Ed Sheerin. Wendy deserves a documentary and to be remembered and celebrated in the punk cannon.
I have the lower half of this guitar. Thinking about putting it up for auction. A piece of one of the other ones that she sawed in half sold for 6400 bucks 8 years ago. My half is in great shape and still has the nail in it that held this pic guard on. :P
I remember this from when I was about 12. To this day I can't believe this was allowed on TV. I don't think Solid Gold knew what they were getting when they booked The Plasmatics
rj zander You have to understand that this was preMTV, and The Plasmatics were usually not TV friendly. Nirvana was different compared to the hair metal scene but they were not shocking compared to The Plasmatics in the early ‘80’s
@Hot80s This is proof the cheaziest free tv back then was 100 times better than cable tv that we're forced to pay a arm and a leg for now (the kardashians! yuck!).

oh shit andy gibb introducing the plasmatics. I forgot he hosted this for a minute before the cocaine seizure. Saw this back in the day. Miss you wendy xxx
I was at the actual taping of this at Channel 5 studios KTLA on sunset. I saw the plasmatics live 6 times and this taping of 2 songs ....(band was synced Wendy was live) John Beauvior + Stu Deutsch were no longer in the band so this not the same energy or drive from the original plasmatics for me at least ... Love Richie's Stotts though 💪 he's a badass! ⚡👊⚡😎
They werent the same after. I saw their Valley of the Damned tour and got to meet her. My dad promoted the show and my mom got schooled on veganism. Both of my parents said that she was by far the most down to earth artist they had worked with
I remember the first time I seen her was this episode of solid gold when I was a kid living in Washington DC the solid gold audience didn't know what to think rest in peace wow
I love this performance! I remember watching this with my younger brother and our former neighbour at his house on the old 26 inch Admiral colour console tv. Never heard or seen them before then, but loved it, with Wendy in her leather bikini, as I thought at the time. Black paint? I thought it was a leather bra, as did my neighbour. He commented on it, lol. I had a black leather tie I wore in high school which I joked matched Wendy O. Williams bra, lol!
It's impossible for anyone who wasn't around at the time, when the cultural bandwidth was so much narrower, to appreciate how profound a mind-fuck this was. Performances like this simply were not supposed to be shown on television. They weren't even supposed to exist.
I saw Them in 78.. Awesome... I was front row... grabbed her inside thigh... She Rocked on.... My buddy did It to her but went up too far.. She Broke the mic over his head...lol That is a Real Story!!!

Props to Solid Gold and whoever their booker was for putting on full-on punk rock on a show famous for its MOR taste. And as usual,Richie Stotts was on top form..
I hear alot of Sweets BURN ON THE FLAME in this song. I never got into them, they did have some bad ass riffs, and Wendy was always great to look at...
What? How come i dont remember this. All i remember of Solid Gold were the dancers and lip syncing. really odd, being that the hosts described what the Plasmatics were known for.
Yep, I can rest assure that no woman in Rock/pop or any other Genre will make a lasting impression that Wendy left on me. She, to me is the Queen of Heavy Metal & Queen of Punk & Not Marylin Manson nore Lady Gaga or any other artists can top it imo because not only did she do what she did, the stunts etc & breaking boundaries & taboos, but she did them when American was still Chips & Love Boat & Disco Dancing .The timeframe in those days makes everything she did then much more extreme than anything going on nowadays that bands do.
Wendy was the greatest, true PUNK style and aggression, wish they would have stuck with punk as opposed to moving more towards metal... but I guess with the aggro metal was the next logical progression... rip Wendy, truly one of a kind
Ya erratic as all hell but strong chords w/ Wes Beech they were badass!! Beauvior ripped on bass! I was at this taping it was on sunset at KTLA Channel 5 studios.

I don't remember them doing a solid gold appearance... this is freaking great 🤟
Really.. like was this there big Sell out Hit??? Doubt it ..
I just read about them on that show tonight. I don’t remember them at all from the 80s
Yep. It was all downhill for them after that…
Marilyn McCoo and Andy Gibb are cracking up during the intro! Can't believe the Plasmatics we're on Solid Gold, lol!
Me either!
My father promoted them in the northeast and this was my first concert experience at 10. Wow...just W.O.W
Way way way ahead of their TIME....ITS 2020 AND THEY STILL SOUND AHEAD OF OUR TIMES

I love that this happened! Gotta give it up for the person at Solid Gold who arranged this! Wendy O. Was fucking legit!
