This is exactly how I learn. The pictures and everything lol I had just started being able to get a hair popping edge on some of my knives and came here to see the explanation behind it lol
Just binge watching some old Neeves Knives videos. Gotta say, the best thing you did was upping your energy level for filming. Old "bang" was so monotone. 😅 Im in the middle of my hair whittling journey.
I was working a very laborious job and was filming after work which was actually very hard on me but if you wanna start your own business etc gotta do the triple time
Thats awesome, yeah i was trying to figure out a way to really say it because i remember not being able to doit, and it wasnt that my edge wasn't sharp enough most times it was the technique was off, but once i figured it out I got it and it made sense
I had a blade sharpened down to 3000 grit diamond stone, it was a sharpening jig so I literally couldn't mess it up. I polished it with a leather strop with green compound that, as I remember, is equivalent to 35,000 grit...I don't know for sure though. THAT SAID I could pop hair no problem, I couldn't whittle a hair until my wife (whose hair I was trying with) told me that hair has grain like a snakes scales. Smooth one way, rough the other, (she's a cosmetologist) . So I turned it around and whittled a way quite easily haha.
Question Jared, or anyone else that could answer, can you get a blade to whittle a hair stropping the blade with cardboard and compound on it? Or stropping on a denim strop and compound? I can't seem to get there (hair whittling sharp), I think I know the answer, but, I may not have proper technique to pull it off.
Hi All, how do you make the edge bigger? Like i mean the very edge of the knife? I think it will make the bald eweaker but will it make it sharper or easier to slice with?
The factory edge on my seki city spyderco stretch in zdp was actually hair whittling. Twas my first seki spyderco and set me up for disappointment as my k390 from them was really bad by comparison.
Type of hair is the true enlightenment. I always wonder why can't I get hair whittling with my big black straight hair. Borrwed my wife's silky hair and all my knives miraculously whittles hair!
That bevel looks pretty shallow… I’m sure that helps alot? Most of my edges can wittle but inconsistently @ 17 degrees per side. Also some steels take a better hair whittling edge then others… i find m390 pita for that kind of stuff… dunno if its just me😅
@@itsaknifestyle8482 yeah that is awesome! Yeah i dont usually try to many factory edges out on hair but have many times and the only one ive found so far was the Rockstead, and possibly one Twosun I can usually tell if a knife will Whittle hair just by touching the edge, and spyderco edges are usually sharp but ive only ever seen one that had good bevels, there bevels are almost always completely off, and they are burnt up sometimes, but thats also pretty typical.
@@NeevesKnives in my experience spydercos factory edges will almost always whittle a hair if you take the factory edge to a sharpmaker med fine and finish with the uf stone.. Add a strop after and its crazy.. My first hair whittling edge was a military doing just that.. Even with me having a wicked edge at the time.. I now freehanf and get so much better edges now that i actually understand a burr. Had i known it then it would of helped my wicked edge tremendously
Different grinds make a difference also as well as the steel, ex my S35VN sebenza with a hollow grind has a mirror polished edge and it tops hairs or whittles them and has a nasty bite but my ZT 0909 in the same steel will not and doesn't like to wear a polished edge at all and it has a much thicker blade....
Definitely, theres so many variables its hard to get them all in one two or even ten videos but i try, and im hoping i can get a lot of helpful tips to folks this week or atleast some reassurance on if there on the right path, I know in the beginning i was getting certain results but didn't know if that was right or wrong, or if it was just me
Awsome simplicity brother👊👊👊you got me wanting to try this out😂watchout hairs here i come😬🤣🤣don't worry no beards will be harmed🤣🤣hava good one brother, tnxs for the knowledge 👌 👍 🍻💯🙏
My wife has hair past her knees and is constantly shedding lol. Does a "fresh" hair make a difference? Or, is it better to use one out of the brush? ✌️
Great Vid man, 1st hair I whittled was with 440c mirror edge, but after that I Havnt really been trying as I don't really have any hair. Lol. Did not think about hair and direction and the way you explained this was terrific. Nice job bro
Nice tips to know but couldn't see it at all. My eyes aren't what they used to be. I doubt I will ever worry about whittling hair. I just want to get to where freehand I can get a very sharp knife.
Its ok, you have to sneak up to other peoples brushes like a wierdo its not like my hair is ever long enough, Kara acts like shes saving them or something 😆
I really like the science you bring to this. I might have to get myself a jewelers loop or something. I finally got myself one of those metamorphs you recommended and I've fallin in love with front flippers. I'm building up calices in weird places on my fingers. Also you sure got some sexy ladies commenting on you videos haha.
Man they wont stop I keep reporting them because they are porn bots, that comment on all me videos its the same girl in every thumbnail but they all have different names, that Metamorph is sweet hopefully you like it and the calaces will only beinfit but i know what you mean, every new knife comes with a new calace, but ive found that the calaces come in hand with other things or other new knives at the very least
@@NeevesKnives haha ya that sucks hopefully they can ban them eventually. Ya man I love the metamorph, I play with it all the time. I'm looking to get a other front flipper, I was bidding on a ts195 but it got above 200 and had to bail. I'm looking at ts129 too. That one is around 130 now, maybe I'll pick that one up.
Nothing for nothing dude ..... but this is like watching grass grow . Whats the coinage for the Rock.... It has been some time since i have seen a blade like that . That is one pretty piece !
I've never seen a professional knife sharpener with so many cuts to his fingers. I've gone from not being able to sharpen a knife to being able to make a knife hair shaving sharp to being able to make a knife hair whittling Sharp and I've never cut myself once. I don't believe any other sharpeners that I know of has either. My theory is it comes from fidgeting with the knives and not from sharpening them. What's your excuse?
@@Danielo197 Normally between 20-30 how bad is the bevel? Just know it wont go over $30 sometimes i add 5$ for certain jobs that require extra unless its real bad then i charge more, plus the shipping
This is exactly the kind of video that sets you apart from the rest of the pack.
Thanks John

I cant thank you enough for these sharpening tutorials !!
Your welcome and thank you for watching
Thanks for the Video, and the whole series. I’m learning quite a bit and the practical advise is super helpful. 👍🏻
thank you. i feel like you said everything i wanted to say to the knife community regarding hair whittled edges

Thanks for explaining the difference. I was thinking that whittling the hair meant cutting it in the direction that's harder to cut.

Can you let us know what the names of these knives are

Only factory edge I had that cleanly whittled hair was my Spydiechef!! It was laser sharp from the start!
Nice! The Spidey chef is a winner, I really like that knife and it does take a pretty damn good edge
I recently got a Sage 5 LW and it could whittle hair. Spydercos factory edges are really sharp, but I’ve noticed they don’t hold an edge very long.

For sure
All of my Spyderco I’ve received has been hair whittling factory edges.

Yeah its not at all necessary, unless we start whittling hair for edc 😆
Interesting but the only hair I can find is some 2 -3 inch curly beard hair. LOL. Kudos for sharing your technique
Yeah i gotta go around steeling hair from girls brushes im not wierd though 😆

What about coarse curly hairs. , , , , ,
I imagine its even easier
I was able to easily whittle hair with a factory edge of a kizer activ bantam.
Nice! I think the only knife i was able to whittle hair besides the Rockstead was a Twosun, I can usually feel an edge if its sharp enough to whittle
