  • Explore the history of Irving Park in Battle Creek, Michigan. The concept for a park at this location was idealized by many residents for years, and it was not until 1911 when the land was gifted to the city by Irving L. Stone with conditions that it be a used for a park, they should make annual improvements for 5 years to develop it, and the park would be named Irving Park. It took many more years for the vision to become a reality, but with the industry and creative talents of landscape designer Clifton Shepherd, it did.
The park is home to some other special monuments as well, including one for a 474 year old white oak tree and special Takasaki Park, a tribute to Battle Creek's international sister city in Japan.

Local grocery stores often give their old lettuce to the parks department to feed ducks.
They did that in Fullerton. The happy quacks at feeding time was cute.

Since for a period of time that I lived as young boy on West Street directly across from the old Community Hospital, I spent a lot of time playing in Irving Park. In the winter months spent hours ice skating at the lagoon and on the other two ponds that were in the area. One of those being a large pond where the Battle Creek Central High School athletic fields are now located. The other was located at the bottom of the hill where Emmet Street now runs through and there is ow a small marshy area.

I remember a wooden walking bridge from then Community Hospital's parking lot over to Irving Park (the locals called it "The Duck Pond). My cousin's family lived on Wilkes Street a block away. When we were young we would go to the neighborhood store on Emmett Street " Pitchentino's" buy some pop and snacks then go sit on the bridge and watch the traffic underneath. I also remember the ice skating; at night the Pond's lights would be on and people would skate at night time. It was a different city back then.
