- This is a history of the golden harvest period between 1860 - 1880 that was centered around Battle Creek, Michigan. Michigan was an emerging state, coming out of a period of pioneer struggle for survival. Industrious farmers tamed the land, creating a bumper crop of wheat across the state while at the same time innovative inventors created and introduced new machines to harvest more yield.
These inventors created models of the early threshers and combines here in Southwest Michigan that have become so common place today in modern farming. Tools enhance farming and the harvest were created all over the U.S. during this period, but two major manufacturers established themselves in Battle Creek during the 1860's. These inventions, combined with a bumper crop of wheat one season started a windfall of a golden harvest that lasted almost two full decades bringing prosperity to the region and state.
