- ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST: Is it the greatest Western ever?
This channel is for classic movie buffs, and for movie lovers who are looking for something more engaging than the current flicks.
A young boy from Italy, Sergio Leone, grew up idolizing the classic American Western movies. With his love of these films, Leone decided to make tributes and references to these movies and combine them into one film, paying homage if you will. He set out to prove that you could make a Western film into a cinematic masterpiece, and thus crafted the Western opera Once Upon A Time In The West, which in my opinion is the greatest Western movie ever made. With this video, I intend to give you my reasons for the love of this great film.

Super class movie. The three leading actors really excelled. Their close-ups are a tribute. Thank you Leone.
Undoubtedly the greatest ever spaghetti western movie of all time. The direction of Sergio Leone n mesmerising copmpisition of Ennio Morricone is awesome. The performance of all star cast equally excellent.True gem of movie.
The older I get the more astounding and amazing this film looks. This is just a masterpiece in cinema not just for a Western. A total master class in the art of "show don't tell."
Undoubtedly the best Western ever, Leone’s best, Morricone’s best score and stellar performances from Fonda,Bronson, Robards and the incomparably beautiful Claudia Cardinale.
Brother words spoken from a wise man. This movie is just wow
The greatest film ever is also the greatest western ever, of course.
As you said, not only the best western ever made, but also one the best films ever made with one of the best soundtracks ever made.
First saw as a young boy. I fell in love with Claudia, such a beautiful women even in a young boys eyes. It is still my favorite western. I can’t see James Coburn as Harmonica he is a great actor, but is more talkative. Eastwood and Bronson can play great scenes with little dialogue.
In a nutshell, yes. When I was younger I had the Clint Eastwood trilogy in top spot - which I still love to watch. But this is quite simply a masterpiece!
Here's how ridiculous people think your "masterpiece" is: th-cam.com/users/shortsDSz6IhTNUEI
Indeed, but i think it's for a more mature audience. While the trilogy is executed in a comic style fashion, this is more complex and operatic.
I have seen probably every western ever made from the 40 s onwards and this is without doubt the best of them all in my humble opinion
Once upon a time in the west is the BEST western ever made and Leone is a real genius.
I love Westerns. Once Upon a Time in the West has always been the greatest, IMO. I would place The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, True Grit, Chato's Land, Tombstone, Dances With Wolves, & Django Unchained, on the "Greatest Westerns" list.
De pleno acordo amigo. Provavelmente o maior gênio do cinema, o maior autor de cinema. Sou brasileiro.
Hateful eight IS miles better than True Grit shit@@vladtheimpaler4843
This one and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", the best westerns ever made.

Timeless classic. Atmospheric. Nostalgic. And very stylish.
The best westerns ever made, all by a brilliant Italian director, but fifty per cent of the credit must go to Enio Morricone.
A great movie that illustrates the transition from.war to peace in the 19th century Old West. This movie really helped make Bronson a Star.
I saw this movie back in 1970 in Alaska on an Army base. I remember it was rated “M” for mature audience. I’ve seen numerous western movies and some amazing ones but nothing, I mean nothing compares to this Movie. By far the Best Western Movie Ever!!! Watch this at least 3 times a year. Incredible and amazing…
YES IT IS👍👍👍👍👍
Yes and the best film of all time !
Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed the deep explanation of the film
And please do not forget the genius music composing of Ennio Morricone!
A masterpiece indeed
GREAT MOVIE and it’s amazing how many people haven’t seen it.
Without a doubt the best western ever!!!
THE BEST EVER!!!
Greatest Western ever!😁👍
This is a great film too
I just saw this movie for the first time a few days ago, and wow. I have to agree, its probably the best Western film of all time. Every character was great, even the ones with only one or two scenes. For a long time I thought maybe Shane, the Good the Bad and the Ugly, or even The Outlaw Josey Wales were the greatest, but the mixture of perfect soundtrack, perfect villain, and bittersweet ending sold it to me.
This movie deserves to win Oscar in many categories. Many times I cant trust Oscar
YES !
I still love this film, I saw for the first time in the early seventies when I was just barely a teenager. Great review, and thanks for sharing.
I was fortunate-enough to see all the Leone films first run in the theaters. GBU was the first, in 1968, and still is the best use of music score in a film. Obviously, GBU and Once Upon a Time in the West had the music scored first, so scenes could be matched to it, just genius. By the way, at least in Phoenix AZ in 1969 (where I was), Once Upon a Time in the West did not play at big theaters at all, and essentially no advertising. Anyway, I've been to the site of the arch in Monument Valley, the dolly tracks of concrete are still there, as are the sides of the arch; yes - I played the music loud while there.
The Searchers (1956) w/ John Wayne is my favorite western.
This masterpiece by Sergio Leone is actually a film about the end of the western epic, the transition to the modern world without heroes, legends and honor, where wild capitalism, symbolized by the railway under construction, advances. Everything is underlined by the wonderful melancholy music of Ennio Morricone. Some curiosities about this work. The first, tragic, was that during filming the actor Al Mulock, one of the three waiting for Harmonica at the station at the beginning of the film, committed suicide by jumping from a balcony wearing his stage clothes because his wife had died the year before of cancer and it seems that he became a drug addict. The role of Harmonica was supposed to be entrusted to Clint Eastwood, but he refused perhaps because he had other commitments and Sergio Leone never spoke to him again for twenty years, then they made peace shortly before Leone died. The actor who played Harmonica's brother was the Italian production manager Caludio Mancini and since Sergio Leone often argued with the producers over budget issues, he had him hanged as a joke. There are several Italian actors in the film. The most famous are the beautiful Claudia Cardinale, Paolo Stoppa who plays the part of the man who drives the carriage that takes Jill McBain/Cardinale from the station to the house where all the members of Brett McBain's family were killed and Gabriele Ferzetti who plays Morton. Greetings from Milan, Italy
To me it is. And for a feature film, a damn fine one also.
I grew up on a Michigan farm with a windmill. The squeak was different but absolutely as relentless! Day in - day out!
Once Upon A Time In The West and My Darling Clementine are possibly the greatest western movies made.
Best MOVIE ever made.
Best Western Ever without a doubt 😊
This is the gone with the wind of westerns
It’s way better than Gone With The Wind. It has the advantage of being filmed 29 years later than GWTW and it’s still decades ahead of its time.
It is THE western which most following westerns have tried to copy. 🤠
Exactly. Often imitated, never duplicated.
BTW, like your @ name. LOL
Not the greatest Western, it is the greatest movie ever
The greatest western, and I believe that it is the greatest overall too. I can understand others not agreeing with that but it is top twenty for sure. The other Leone westerns do not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.
If I had one complaint it would be the pacing. It feels too long, and outside of the main story of the Harmonica vs Frank, everything else feels like filler.
It is the best ewer
Yes.
Also, quite possibly the greatest movie ever made.
It is a masterpiece. So is The Searchers.
Agree. I absolutely love that movie.
@@classiccinema9490 The Searchers is one of my 13 all time favorite films. Ford made many tremendous westerns. Hawks made a few too. So did Anthony Mann.
@@willieluncheonette5843 I wish the Duke would have played more roles like that.
Great tribute to the film, thanks for making and sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes
Sou brasileiro. Parabéns por esta grande homenagem.
Is it the greatest Western ever? yes😀😀
Fun Fact: The creaking windmill sound at the beginning was also used by Midnight Oil in their Beds are Burning video
My favorite Western. Great study of this Classic. Cheers!
Thanks!
OUITW is a remarkable feat that evolved & transformed the western genre in so many ways. Leone had such mastery of eye, poise of character and narrative, and passion for the genre. The last of his trilogy, Duck you Sucker/Fistful of Dynamite is probably my favorite for its human narrative qualities, yet you dispute OUITW is a great cinematic piece - a must see to appreciate, hopefully on the big screen. Great review & great channel. Thank you.
💯
I agree. The greatest western ever made.
Morton whos biggest dream was to see the ocean dies with his face in a muddy pool of water..........God i wish Leone didnt die so early, every movie he did was better than the previous one.
People forget Morton too, had his own musical theme in this movie, the longing to see the ocean, and the music brought that vision and yearning, to life.
well done man!
Agree....with everything you state...and the statement at the end by Morricone? LOL, Well, somebody had to say it. ;-)
Thanks for watching! I know this video will probably be controversial because many people will have different opinions of what the best Western is. If you don't agree, which Western do you think is the best? Also, I apologize for a section of the video is missing. There was a copyright claim and I had to edit part of it. I hope everyone still enjoys it!
Once Upon A Time in the West is the greatest western I have ever seen. A close second is "Duck, you Sucka"!

Sou brasileiro.
The greatest western is the TGTBTU! 😉
This masterpiece is a bit longer as Ounce upon a time in the west!
# 1
an American tapestry sewn by an Italian genius
Agreed!
Harmonica could only be played by Charles Bronson. Does anyone remember when the cut version was played, it made no sense at all with one third of the plot cut out. Even with the "restored" version out now, there are scenes missing. The Sheriff ( Keenan Wynn ) suspected Harmonica of the McBain killings, and used enforced interrogation techniques to get a confession out of him. This is why in some scenes Harmonica has a mark on his face, and in other scenes, he doesn't.
Yes is it. One more taste of life.
Lonesome Dove
Sergio Leone was a genius. But he could not done this masterpiece without other geniuses. Like Ennio Morricone. And of course Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson. But I agree, the best western ever made. Nothing is even close.
Great comment. Couldn't have said it better.
plus Jason Robards and Gabriele Ferzetti
Well..I, ve .just sent for this bluray....
oh yes the best western made.
Weirdly I, ve never seen it...yet....only bluray in my collection- Sam Peckinpah,s " The Wildbunch"....
But I'm like this
This is certainly ONE of the great films, others are, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, Godfather, and maybe one or two more.
"Sweetwater" is from a #JohnWayne Movie!!!
But what happened to Woody Strode's disappearig overcoat?!
You hearted your own comment, do you just heart them all without even reading them?
No I read each and every one!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS
There is a Gunfight which the audience never sees, when #Cheyenne enters the Bar. I do not know of any other gunfight which you hear but do not see on screen!!!
Definitely the greatest western ever..Without Ennio Morricone the genius composer, it wouldn't have been...
EXCEPT FOR THE McBAINS KILLED IN THE OPENING, every character is a villain!!! Innocent Prosdtitute like Claudia Cardinale, to villainous villains of different stripes: #Robards, #Bronson and #Fonda!!!
Dude!! You missed it!!! Lee Van Cleef is in High Noon!!!
Short answer.YES IT IS 😂
This is the Leone western I watch the least but I agree it is the best
I am fascinated by your comment.
Would you mind expanding upon it?
You agree it is his best, but watch it the least?
Just curious.
I prefer The Wild Bunch.
The searchers is the best western period!!!
Absolutely.
The Searchers is the greatest.
Yeah it looks good but he story and music aren't quite as engaging as TGTB&TU
The good and the bad is a kingarden movie compared to this and Morricone's music scores, are much better in once upon a time in the west.
@@fitlessno just no
Kindergarten? You're not very realistic are you?
@@jc940 nope he is just stupid
No.
Nope it isn't, it's only the 4th greatest spaghetti western, behind the dollar movies, there, that's that sorted!! 🎥💵💲👍😊
No, have to disagree. The dollars trilogy is the choice of the Saturday night movie audience, they're exciting and action packed, but OUATITW is a cinematic masterpiece with cinematography that elevates it into one of the greatest movies of all time, regardless of genre.
💯
No it's not it's a great big over blown horse opera.
Tried to watch this on television a few years ago. Maybe I was overexpectant. I found it to be cliche ridden, light on story, heavy on famous faces, and slow, slow slow. No new ideas but a lot of scenes full of portent. A major waste of resources.
Go and watch an action movie where there is a killing every second minute, really good movies are not for you 😂
The older I get the more this movie stinks. There is nothing "Classic" about any spaghetti western, they are trash. I walked out of the theatre before this piece of trash was over.
That explains the"walks" in @walksfletcher then!
Keep getting older, as that way, one stops breathing!
Your failure to appreciate this movie is staggering.
No need to reply, I won't grace you with a reply of my own should you do so but I shall keep a wishful eye open on the "obituaries" column!
Too cerebral and pretentious. Also, a Spaghetti western can NEVER be the best Western overall.
Well said, partner...
I disagree, but I respect your opinion! Thanks for watching.
Couldn't disagree more.
@@ronaldmilner8932 With the OP or my video? LOL
Of course you could! You could always say "Nobody says that about my boyfriend's movie!"@@ronaldmilner8932
It is one of the most boring westerns ever made.
What a plonker!
Just most boring movies in general
You clearly need to stick to cartoons.
Brilliant brilliant brilliant! This analysis is everything i needed to write my essay🫶🫶
Overdone, melodramatic - you'd think it was made by a director of Italian soap operas. Unoriginal, stagey and theatrical, poorly edited, predictable, and based solely on the Italian passion for vendetta (revenge) and la Famiglia (the family - in this case Charles Bronson's brother.) It would've made more sense if the story took place in Italy. They don't call these cheesy melodramas "Spaghetti Westerns" for no reason. Which other Western movie is better? ALL of them - the ones that are actually about America anyway.
Thank you for your comment!
I am an Italian. I agree with you 100%. Leone had no clue as to what the real west was. He bought the Hollywood myth.
Haters are gonna hate!
What a plonker you are.
Lol, the proud American who cannot accept the fact that an Italian director can make better westerns than Americans. Cry baby cry😂
Yes
