      Ralph, I get it that you worship this movie. But I think that you are fanboying too much. They didn't frame it so perfectly so you don't see their chins in close up shots. You don't see their chin and top of their hats because the movie was cropped so it could be shown in ultra wide format (21:9). Brilliant movie none the less.

      It was actually shot in 2.35:1, the preferred format of Sergio Leone. This is pretty close to 21:9 (which is actually 64:27, or ~2.37:1). 21:9 was developed in order to be a close approximation of the old cinema formats, like 2.35:1 and CinemaScope.

    One thing you didn’t touch on in this: Henry Fonda’s casting.
    He was typecast as a good guy actor pretty much his whole career, and this was his first villainous role (or one of his first in a long time). He was so damn good at it. I can only imagine the shock that audiences had when he showed up on screen and shot that kid.

Not even mentioning Once upon a time..is basically an allegory about sticking it to the man. The elite treating folks bad for profit and the disadvantaged coming back for retribution is a story of all time and now (2020) especially topical.

    When looking at Leone's most famous movies we can see how important the movie's name is.
    "Once upon a time in the west" is a somewhat boring title and few americans know about the movie while "The good, the Bad and the ugly" is a fucking great title making it Leone's most famous Western in the US.
    In Germany "the good, the Bad and the ugly" has a very generic title (two glorious scoundrels) while "once upon a time in the west" is called "Play me the song of death". This very unusual and memorable name makes it the best known western and one of the best known movies in Germany. "Play me song of death" or variations of it have even become a saying in Germany so everyone has heard of it.

    For some reason Morton is my favourite character in the film.
    In a way he is a main villain just as much as Frank since the plot is pretty much set in motion on his orders and with his money, but it is interesting to see how the whole situation spirals out of his control due to Frank doing things beyond what Morton is comfortable with and struck with guilt over it.

    • @dogeshark204
      @dogeshark204 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I never saw Morton as an unreedemable person. He always complains about frank's way of doing things. He hated that he killed Jill's family, and in one point in the film he says that he doesn't want more killings and that he wants to negotiate with Jill. I always felt bad for him in his last scene. All he wanted to do was to get done with the situation and retire to the ocean. But all he gets is close to a small piece of water. It's kinda sad.

    The soundtrack for The Place Beyond The Pines is a pretty underrated soundtrack if you liked the composer mentioned at the beginning of the video.

    Once Upon a Time in the West is by far my favorite western, probably my favorite movie ever. I remember watching it with my dad when I was a kid, and him telling me how he'd watch it with his dad. Apart from it being a masterpiece, this movie has a very strong emotional factor for me, it feels good to see it get so much love.

    I think the reason I like this video series is because you get to see the genuine passion you have for the art of filmmaking . Your negative reviews are very entertaining but it’s nice to see you be positive from time to time .

    Funfact: In Germany this movie is called "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod" which basicly translates to "Play me the song of death"....it's not that cheesy in german forreal, I actually like it a lot. It also replaces Fonda's line "Keep your loving brother happy" in the final flashback.

    All of my favorite Western movies take place near the end of the Wild West, around the turn of the century. There's something about the closing of the frontier, with all the associated upheavals and nostalgia for less civilized times, that makes the plots of those movies more interesting to me. This movie, The Shootist, My Name Is Nobody, Five Card Stud, these are all fantastic films.
    But this one is definitely the best. Everyone in it is brilliant. Jason Robards is gritty and intimidating, Charles Bronson is tough and heroic, Claudia Cardinale is a spitfire with a really sad backstory, and I don't know who played Morton, but his death scene broke me up more than anything else in the movie. This is all without mentioning Henry Fonda, who plays one of the most believably chilling bad guys in cinema. I would be hard-pressed to find a film with a better cast.

      Morton is played by italian actor Gabriele Ferzetti. Notably he was the main ally and father-in-law of James Bond in the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
