If you listen to the album version, it goes on for a lot longer and feels a whole lot more cathartic after all of the chaos of the rest of the song. Any of the main instrumentals from The Fragile (same album as We're In This Together) would be good choices for NIN. Specifically, "The Mark Has Been Made", "Pilgrimage", and the ultimate Nine Inch Nails instrumental, "Just Like You Imagined". If I'm not mistaken the drums in the early NIN stuff are sampled from industrial albums Trent liked, so like Ministry and so on. They were placeholders as he was writing and beginning to build the songs which were meant to be replaced later once he got into the studio. But as the legend goes he just couldn't find anything that hit like a bunch of drum samples he recorded in lo-fi from worn out tapes, so they just mastered them and left them in.

  • @putridfetidini5468
    @putridfetidini5468 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    That ending was not the actual ending of the song. As a paggage, it was shortened by about half.
    The passage I'm referring to is the piano part at the end where Trent takes the listener into his signature melody which can be found in various songs throughout his catalog (the song 'Closer' being the most obvious example). Not sure why but I'm fairly certain you listened to a version that was edited down for time. I hope for the sake of your unique perspective you listen to the full version of that last little bit some time. 🙂

    • @arachosia
      @arachosia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The piano melody at the end of this can be found in Closer? Really? I know the melody at the end of Closer is in Heresy and The Downward Spiral (the song), but I don’t hear it here at all. Only cases where I’ve noticed this were in The Frail, which shows up again as the solo in The Fragile (the song), and the bass in La Mer is used in Into the Void.

    • @artemlyubchenko3022
      @artemlyubchenko3022 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the melody you're referencing is the 3 note motif which also shows up in La Mer and Into The Void, the Closer melody appears on other songs on The Downward Spiral, but not The Fragile.

    The Fragile is one of those albums that are really imprinted into my soundtrack of life, to me one of the best from NIN a worthy companion and sort of a thematically progression from The Downward Spiral that spoke to me at a visceral level. There are a lot of songs from this album that deserve a thorough decomposing but then again there's a lot of music from Trent that does deserve equal attention, like his stuff on How to Destroy Angels or his scores and soundtracks. I'm so glad that he continues on just being awesome in this time, considering how many of the artists from that generation are sadly gone way before their time. Thanks for the video!
