I think the reason Umayyads won both civil war was thanks to how well Muawiyah established himself in Syria he was the second in command of one of four armies that were sent by the first caliph to Raid Palestine and Syria and he ruled Syria since caliph Omar days for 21 Years a a governor and 19 years as a Caliph and Al though Iraq had a more prestigious and larger Arab nobility most of the powerful tribes there were newcomers moved there by Caliph Omar to occupy the garrison cities of Kufa and Basra they were never as united even caliph Ali who had their support couldn't control them,
Meanwhile the army that conquered Syria mostly died during one of the many epidemics and the caliph through Muawiyah had to turn to the local Arab tribes (some theories claim that this was the reason Omar dismissed Khaled because he wasn't liked by the tribes he defeated and killed)
The arab tribal population of Syria were used to serving under local nobility (the Ghassanids) and Muawiyah further gained their support by marrying into them and his good governorship, also being in the front against the byzantines made them into one fearsome professional army
Maybe you noticed that during the last episode Marwan army was made of Ghassanids and the kalb both local tribes and formally Christian and byzantines clients.

After you watch the slavery in the Muslim world video, I would suggest that u watch the Kings and Generals' Islamic Schism video, where he explains in detail about the history Sunni-Shia divide. The videos about the first fitna kinda touched the surface of this topic, but there are more to it in the story than that.
I would also recommend you to watch his video about Arabia before Islam.

@@miracleyang3048 the schism I believe kings and general did a decent job and I’m a Muslim. Yes it’s not 100% orthodox Islamic viewpoint but remember kings and general are creating content for majority of different people

And iam not complaining because it's not the Orthodox Islamic viewpoint, i wish he just did as good as even the Wikipedia article about the Schism

@@miracleyang3048 It's certainly better than most videos around the internet that covers the topic.
Are there better videos that covered more details? Yes. Yes, there are. But Kings and Generals' video about the Islamic schism is pretty accurate and touched some of the most important points that others might've skipped or simplified.
It's still worth to checkout, imo. Especially since he's currently watching Kings and Generals video about early Islam and the series is about to end. He can always check other sources after that and decide which one is better

    Greetings Ethan,
Do you know about the book called "Atrocities: The 100 deadliest episodes in Human History" by Matthew White?
It is unique I just started reading it today.

I've never read the book myself, but one of my High School history teachers was a big fan of that book. It always sounded like an interesting read.

I have to disagree with you on the depopulated thing، you shouldn't think of this as the Roman empire that's more similar to the later caliphate, during those early age only arab tribesman or non arab Muslims with strong client relationship with their arab tribes were the ones who hold weapons and power,
Basra and kufa were only small towns but they were the most important settlement to control in the whole former Sassanid empire lands of the caliphate, most of the Persian lands were controlled by local nobility but never dared rebelling you know why? Because the caliph can simply recruit Arabs from the garrison towns of Basra and Kufa and crush the rebellion,
During the Umayyad era a firm control of the garrison towns became a necessity since they are the source of power and the biggest threat to the central rule,
Same thing in Egypt were the garrison town of Fustat was the most important settlement because it was the garrison towns were you can recruit arab tribesman
That's why the Arabian peninsula is still important even if kinda depopulated because the large amount of arab tribes there

19:55 his wife was the widow of yazed and it is said she killed him because he insulted her son Khalid ( son of yazed )and wanted to remove him from power because he was next to become cilphe and probably Marwan wanted a son of his own to become the next caliph

Yhh I don’t know why Kings and Generals didn’t mention Al-Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf 🤔. He’s one of the most famous ruthless tyrants in Islamic history and he did so much damage *and some good as well* every Muslim that knows history always speak negatively about him haha. Of course again Kings and Generals are not gonna make a video from an orthodox Islamic perspective
