Saramonic makes a wireless receiver called the RX9 which supports up to two transmitters at the same time. You can find it packaged with two TX9 transmitters for less than $400 total. My only real complaints about this package are 1) the antennas are permanently attached to both the transmitters and receivers, and 2) they have poor battery life, but I guess that's the trade-off for being able to run them on AAs, which is convenient. Just get some rechargeable lithium batteries if you want it too run longer. The receiver comes with a cold shoe so you can easily mount it on any DSLR or mirrorless camera, and it's removable so you can just use the belt clip it comes with if you want. The receiver is also light enough that it can be mounted on top of the GH5 even when using the Zhiyun Crane, although this makes it difficult to balance and causes the battery of the gimbal to drain faster.

I considered getting the Voightlander 17.5mm f/0.95. With the GH5's 2x crop factor, this makes it equivalent to a 35mm f/1.9 on a full frame. But since the GH5's sensor outresolves 4K, it has an "extended teleconversion" function which crops 1.4x into the middle of the sensor without any degradation of picture quality. So when ETC is enabled, the 17.5mm lens effectively becomes a 50mm. So you essentially get two common focal lengths for one ultra-fast prime lens. However, I ended up not getting the Voightlander because I realized I could get the Mitakon 25mm f/0.95 and the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 combined for less money.
The thing I like about the Laowa 7.5mm is that it's rectilinear, meaning it has no perceptible distortion despite being an ultra wide angle. This means you can walk through a narrow doorway and the sides will still look straight. This is extremely useful for things like real estate video and architecture. And since it has such a short focal length, it has an extremely deep depth of field even at f/2, which is useful for use with a gimbal since it eliminates the need to constantly adjust focus. And even if 7.5mm is too wide, you can always just crop the footage in post if you record in 4K. It can also focus extremely close, so you can get some pretty crazy shots with it. You can put it six inches from a person's face and have their entire head in frame and in focus with the background out of focus.

Down the road id love to build a similiar rig but for the g85. The cages I see support the body but no extra room for battery grip.

Thanks for the Video. I like to see different setups and rigs. BTW, The .64x SB does vignette on the Gh5s in video at 18mm. Also, that looks like a Manfrotto 501 Qr and not a smaller Arca Swiss. I have Smallrig cages for my Gh5and Gh5s cameras but without the battery grip because I'm using V mount batteries. I mount my Atomos with a Smallrig Nato to Nato clamp. It makes it super easy to move anywhere on the cage. I use a Crane 2 (and previously the Ronin M) but for my 50mm Anamorphic lens its still too small of a gimbal. I'm gonna try the DJI and the Crane 3.

I wish I was this reach and buy the necessary lenses, gimbal, rig and audio accessories to pursue my dream as a filmmaker.

You don't need all the fancy gear to be a film maker, you need passion and creativity, gear is just some of the tools used along the way. I might have some nice gear, but I lack the creativity sometimes making the gear uselesss.

@@The-Logician I understand your point of view, but nowadays nobody will ever give you attention and credit for making a film with mediocre video and audio quality. I have a 5D Mark III that I am going to sell to buy the GH5. But I really need a Zoom recorder and a relatively cheap shotgun mic, not to mention tripods, stabilizers and so on. I have found a good tripod for $155, but couples demand a glidecam or gimbal to really give that cinematic look to their wedding film. Anyway, I'll buy the GH5 and start taking weddings and public events to augment my budget and buy some cheap but valuable products.
I've also resorted to building some gear myself. I've always been the creative and pragmatic type, I love bicycles and the way they work, so I've had ways to train myself for such processes. I've built a film slate from an old white board and some lighting gear with LED bulbs (for home use) and slim wooden boards. I'll try to construct a simple boom pole and a slider sooner or later...but gear like a Glidecam or even a tripod can't really be built at home with regular materials.

Very good video. I'm about to buy it but I have some doubts. I would like to mount it on a Smallrig base, for a BMPCC4K, I plan to use for now old Nikon Ai and Af-S photography lenses that have the focus ring on the edge of the lens. My question is: Would the Follow Focus be uncomfortable being very close to the Mattebox? Can the Fotga Mattebox adjust the vertical height? I've seen that some people have to buy a taller base plate when the Mattebox doesn't fit the size of the camera and lens. Thanks for your time.

I don’t find any issues with proximity of the follow focus to the matte box. I have since switched cage setups to not have the battery grip anymore. I am using v-mount batteries, so I went to a regular cage for the GH5. I am using a quick release plate under the cage to be able to quickly detach the camera from the rig which gives the right height to be compatible with the matte box. The matte box has some vertical adjustment capability but not enough sometimes without something under the camera cage like the quick release plate.

Also, 2021 update, I’ve also stripped back most of the audio gear as I’m using a separate audio bag setup now, and using timecode boxes. Audio timecode for GH5 cameras and direct input file time code to the Canon C70

@@The-Logician Thank you very much, I think I am going to bet on buying it to see if it works perfectly with the Smallrig base plate, if necessary, I will buy a higher base if it does not work well with the lenses that I have on hand at the moment. Greetings!!!

I use the Smallrig half cage and that ability to quickly remove it from the battery grip to put in a gimbal or slider is its great strength. How do you find the follow focus? I am researching one right now and cant decide on manual or wireless so I can use easily on gimbal or slider as well?
I must look at that Segway, I use one already but it cant go very well on a non smooth surface like yours can.

    • @The-Logician

Steve Tucker I have since added a PDMovie wireless follow focus kit to the rig as I do more filming of myself, and it has the ability to accurately rack focus on two focus set points just like a manual follow focus with stops, but can lose connection from time to time. I find trying to focus while gimbal mounting too much fuss so i generally set aperture up high enough to keep a large depth of field in focus unless i am keeping a constant distance to subject. For slider shots, consider using the built in rack focus settings in GH5, but the wireless follow focus works good in that case if you don’t have a fly by wire lens and a focus gear ring on the lens.

Thanks for the info, what brand are those carbon rods?

    • @The-Logician
      @The-Logician  5 ปีที่แล้ว

rampagetv Some are the carbon rods that came from an old cheap Cameron shoulder rig, others are Smallrig rods purchased off Amazon. I cut a longer rod into the shorter length rods that are mounted on the front of the camera rig
