Great video thank you for sharing!! I do have one problem and I am trying to set up my GH5 to my new Ninja V. The option "HDMI Recording Control" is grayed out on my GH5 and I can not select that option to turn it on. Any suggestions? Thanks
Thanks for making this video! So useful! I'm about to buy the Ninja 5 and I didn't want to buy their expensive HDMI cable. But today i just read (from a seller on Ebay) that if we want to record ProRes RAW, we need the latest expensive cable from Atomos. Is that true or can we record in that mode with a cheaper HDMI 2.0a?
Hi, Joseph. I have had Gh5 for 3 years and have found out filming in C4KALL-I 400M 24P. gives me the best image ever. however i bought $200 SD card which i happened to use it 3times with the settings mentioned above. surprisingly this same card wont let me shoot with C4KALL-I 400M 24P. after 20seconds the message would pop-up reads. "Recording was cancelled due to the limitation of the writing speed of the card". I have formatted the card several times, i even went to my local store where i bought the card and they changed to a new one, still the same thing. here are details of the card. VELOCITY CINE. 128GB Pro/Master Professional. Code 7419 SD V90 XC 3II. my question is, can it be Panasonic firmware update all may be i have touched something in camera setting that's causing this error. Thanks.
I’ve never heard of that brand. It could be that the card simply isn’t as fast as advertised, but also yes it’s possible they’ve done something in the card that requires camera support. I’d return it for a different brand. I recommend Prograde, Angelbird and OWC. V90 is certainly fast enough (400mbps = 50MBps; V90 = 90MBps) so there’s something not right here.
this is why a like audio / midi. I/O isnt just I/O its send and receive. you can set which device is the master / slave etc. a wireless connection would get around this problem for the gh5 /atomos set up though. dont know if atomos has wireless.
The Atomos does not. But wireless wouldn’t be fast enough or reliable enough. There’s a LOT of data being pushed through and a single drop could kill ya.
Question: I have the Atomos Ninja V (Firmware 10.1) connected to my GH5 (Firmware 2.4) with a UCEC Full HDMI to Full HDMI Coiled Cable for Atomos for Ninja Star Recorder A to A full size @t. When I select 4K 8 Bit 150M 60p setting the Ninja display shows "No Input". But all other settings appear to work. Have you ever experienced this? Can the Ninja record 4K @ 60 FPS? How do you set it up for this? Can seem to find a tutorial or review explaining this.
I had a similar problem with the GH5s and the Ninja a few days ago. Press record button on the camera. records just fine. for whatever reason i stop recording on the via atomos. then since i'm run-n-gun, i see something that looks good (it's a live event) . press record on the camera & rather than starting to record, it stopped. didn't realize till i was too late to get the shot. now i just have to be extremely aware of what the camera/recorder is doing at all time & i still catch myself double-tapping the rec button on the camera quite often. i thought about disabling the hdmi trigger, but i've grown to love it. ;)
You're brilliant to share mistakes, God if half of the social web was like this it would be a better place. Hey one more experience I had. A lilliput monitor and my GH5 did not play nice. It froze the screen. First couple of times a reboot, then battery removal corrected. The last time not even that worked and brought and abrupt end to a shoot. I did not test which settings didn't work well, but it was a 7" model.
Thanks for the complement, and bummer on your experience. DId you talk to the manufacturer? Sounds like there's something on the other end of the HDMI port (ie their monitor) that the GH5 did not like!
I went to Panasonic and they were fantastic. I mean the GH5 support group for me is wonderful. You are right I should go to Lilliput. Also ever heading to Minneapolis ?
Nothing planned for Minneapolis but you never know. Be sure you’re tuned into the channel here and @photojoseph on twitter. I always announce where I’ll be well in advance!
do you happen to get a redline on the right side of frame when reviewing Atomos 422 10bit footage? I spoke to Atomos and they said they were aware & would fix in an update, i was curious if perhaps all of them have this issue. I get it on DCI 4k60p. so i typically have to enlarge by 1% to remove it.
Doesn't Atomos record the overlay info HUD in to the files too if you record only externaly? From what I've seen, you forgot to turn off the recording information for external recording.
That is correct. I didn’t forget to turn it off though; it was on intentionally so you could see the controls when I had it connected directly to the switcher for the first part of the show. I have, however, forgotten to turn that off when connected to the Atomos. Once. Just once. Back on the GH4. That’s a mistake you only make once :-)
Bought my first camera from Hunts and it was pretty much THE camera shop in the Boston area to go to for top quality gear and advice. They also had a small shop up in S. Portland, Maine. I've since moved around and now live in Vegas where the best camera shop here is a few miles down the road from me named B&C Camera.
@@photojoseph Yes it is and many times I need some guidance in purchasing the right gear or making sure it's the right fit and that's not something you can easily do on Amazon or other online retailers.
After watching this...I have tried to get my GH5 setup to trigger the record on my Atomos Ninja V and can't seem to get it to work. I have followed the exact steps outlined in the Atomos V manual by setting (under the Atomos Timecode tab ) Source to HDMI and HDMI Timecode to ON and then on the GH5 under the video menu I have HDMI Recording Control set to ON and I am using the 4:2:2 10bit Bit Mode setting. I am also in the Creative Video mode from the mode dial on top of the GH5. So, I have everything set up correctly from what I've read from the instructions but when I hit the record button from the GH5...the HDMI icon on the GH5 screen indicates the recording has begun with the flashing red circle BUT nothing is happening on the Ninja V. It simply does not start recording. Also, if I choose 4:2:0 8Bit mode from the camera and then hit record...it will start recording on the GH5 and even though both the GH5 and Ninja V time code is in sync and indicating both are recording...once I check my SSD from the Ninja...nothing is recorded. So..I have no idea what I'm missing or doing wrong but I can't seem to make the remote record trigger from the GH5 to work with the Ninja V.

Just incase anyone out there is still using this set up or looking to like I am then I believe I've seen a video where there is an extra step on the atomos ninja v settings you need to toggle on to allow full communication between the external recorders record button and the gh5's record button
@@photojoseph was on caleb hoovers vid of his gh5 and atomos ninja v video but I've just watched and he doesn't clarify if it does change this setting he just shows there's a trigger toggle to switch on in the atomos ninja v so yea might not change it if you've already done that
@photojoseph By the way Joseph. The playback button on my GH5 isn't working anymore. Is it that something is off in the camera setting, or maybe the button died and gave up the 👻?
@TonyRush21 I don’t think it’s possible to turn that one off. Check for debris in the button (use a brush and a blower) and if not then do a full camera reset. Save settings first.
Hey dude, I am really thinking about buying an external recorder for my G9 so I can overcome it's time limit (and also record on 422 instead of 420), but I have no idea if it works as good as it does with the GH5. Since you have both bodies and you have the Atomos, can you please test (or even better, make a video about it) on the G9??? Thanks!!!
PhotoJoseph Honestly I don't know exactly how it works. For example, if I change the shutter speed or stuff like that, how that works on the HDMI out of the G9? Does the "record button thingy" that you showed works on the G9? Is it possible to record internally and externally at the same time? What I mean by "as good" is that if all the options are there (except the obvious ones that shouldn't be there, like all "GH5 unique" stuff like 10bit or anamorphic).
PhotoJoseph Awesome! Thanks! That will help a lot everyone (like me) that like to do more semi-pro video work but are mainly stills and cannot afford both bodies :D (and for me, since I am more a stills photographer, the G9 photo features makes more sense to me than the GH5).
I shot a video in 4k 24fps 10bit Vlog mode. But when I went home and saw the footage, there was light amount of noise going on. Was it bcs I use wrong native iso??
Hard to say without knowing what ISO or seeing the footage, but it could be simply that it looks noisy because it’s not corrected gets. Pull the blacks to black and the noise will probably disappear. Also it could be because you exposed incorrectly. Log is easy to screw up!
@@hoangvunguyen9311 That is the base ISO for V Log mode on the GH5. You must expose correctly using a waveform monitor guide and make sure whatever you are shooting stays within an 80 to 15 IRE window (80 Peak and 15 on the low end). Otherwise, you will get excessive sensor noise in the footage that will have to be hit with something like NEAT noise reduction software. When you use a Vlog to whatever color space you want conversion LUT, the dynamic range will expand out and you won't have the heavy noise.
I've had to send my Atomos Ninja Inferno back to Atomos for heating issues. I miss it so much. But, this video was helpful. I will always make sure to hit that record button on the Atomos when I get it back! :)
To be clear, I’ve never had a problem getting the recording/not recording out of sync. When you have HDMI control enabled, it always works. It’s just when you attach a monitor only, or even intend to use the Atomos as a monitor only, that you run into an issue.
That’s tough because it’s not a bug, I’ve shown this to them and suggested a solution but no idea how far up the chain that will go. It’s pretty fringe, but obviously can happen.
I agree Joseph. Well done for spotting this, I don't think its fail by any means, as we all learn great things from our failure. But I think this needs to be addressed by Panasonic either with new firmware and as they are about to release the new full frame S1 and S1R series which record 4k 60FPS Full frame, I actually met with Panasonic in London at a film festival and told them they need to look at rolling out more and more software updates to address so many issues. Further more they are releasing a new update in October for the GH5/GH5S. www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh5_firmware.html
more than likely it would be a firmware update on Atomos's side of the house... for whatever reason the recorder can listen to the camera, it just can't talk back... we need the Atomos to talk back to the camera... Communication is key! :P
Glad you have shared this. I could see myself making this mistake, however I only use the Atomos external recorder so a little less chance of this happening to me.
Using presets DOESN'T make you free from thinking what are you currently doing. That's the general idea of using a professional gear... - all need to be done manually and in a specified order... "think-push", NOT the wise-versa...! :))) Sad, but... RIGHT! :)))
Hey Joseph! Thank you for All you've done teaching us! Invaluable content!!! I Need tiny bity help understanding something drives me crazy :) In MANUAL MODE of GH5, v2.5, I'm able to to record video (Red Button) and take pictures (Shutter button). My problem is, when I start video record (in M Mode) my Exposure/Aperture changes automatically to Automatic and cannot be changed. I want to use GH5 as my C1 + taking bracket photos for HDR Or just be able to record video and take stills without and SS/aperture/exposure change (Manual defined) IS IT POSSIBLE? PLEASE,, PLEASE HELP ME, PLEASE :)
So the camera mode is in M (photo) mode, not the video camera icon (Creative Video Mode), correct? That sounds right; because your exposure setting for photos would not be the same as it was for video. So the camera takes over. No way to do manual for BOTH simultaneously, sorry. What you'll need to do is swap between M and Creative Movie mode. The aperture will be maintained (i.e. if you set it to f/2 in M it'll be in f/2 in Movie) and the shutter speed will be remembered by the mode; i.e. if you set it to 1/125th in M and 180d in movie, it'll stay there. So you can easily change the mode back and forth.
@@photojoseph I figured that's going to be the case and would wish you can *further custom your GH5 to do just that* in C1 (setting shutter as bracket/take stills) as it's not a technical barrier but a defined manufacturer barrier. *You probably can imagine the huge amount of respect I have for you for answering and helping me in my question.* Thank you so much!!!.
I honestly don't remember what I was trying to do at this point… that was a while ago. But the point of the video was to show an easy mistake to make when using a monitor. That's it.
With most monitors only displaying 8 bit - why not just stick with 4k 60p 8bit internal ? Save carrying all that extra expensive and cumbersome gear around.
Because you have more options with color grading, exposure adjustment, and highlight recovery in 10 bit. Also less banding. Overall better image quality, that’s why.
PhotoJoseph nothing special, it’s just your movements on the chest mic. It does happen, i hear it too through the whole video, but not very aggressively. Keep the great work :)
And don't try to fix the SD card compartment rubbery by yourself. Engineering suck and Lumix should replace those for free. I was able to swap it but after the process my camera turns on but it gives no image. I dont have camera anymore. #Lumix_stories
get on with it !! Takes you 13 minutes to ramble on about this !! helpful but dude get to the point . another video did this in 3 minutes with all the info needed

When you use a Vlog to whatever color space you want conversion LUT, the dynamic range will expand out and you won't have the heavy noise.
@@dan_hitchman007 Thank you so much for your help.
very well explained, thanks. I sense you just saved me a lot of head scratching
Thank you Joseph for making us aware of this issue. I expect Panasonic will hopefully address these issues with maybe more firmware updates?
great video and you noticed the mic was dead pretty quick!
Thanks!
that's so slick!
☺️
That music hard af bro
Awesome, thanks for that!
Thanks you for your warning . I think without your advice i would have done the same mistake.
Thank you for saying so. Got a little tired of being called an idiot for making a mistake ;-)
you lied to everybody, you did NOT record in 60fps
Glad you have shared this. I could see myself making this mistake, however I only use the Atomos external recorder so a little less chance of this happening to me.
Unless you run out of space on your SSD and start shooting to the SD but using your Atomos as a monitor.
PhotoJoseph Agreed. That's why I have up to 5 SSD's in Atomos caddies with me. 🎬
I Need tiny bity help understanding something drives me crazy :)
In MANUAL MODE of GH5, v2.5, I'm able to to record video (Red Button) and take pictures (Shutter button).
My problem is, when I start video record (in M Mode) my Exposure/Aperture changes automatically to Automatic and cannot be changed.
I want to use GH5 as my C1 + taking bracket photos for HDR
Or just be able to record video and take stills without and SS/aperture/exposure change (Manual defined)
IS IT POSSIBLE?
Happy to help, and good luck on your channel. I just subbed; we make bread at home occasionally!
@@photojoseph Thank you Joseph, I appreciate your time and help! 👍
Super yikes. I keep that in mind
YOU are not recording UHD 60P on atomos.
OK… and?
@@photojoseph you wanted to record 4k60P 4:2:2 via HDMI on atomos, no?
I honestly don't remember what I was trying to do at this point… that was a while ago. But the point of the video was to show an easy mistake to make when using a monitor. That's it.
With most monitors only displaying 8 bit - why not just stick with 4k 60p 8bit internal ? Save carrying all that extra expensive and cumbersome gear around.
Because you have more options with color grading, exposure adjustment, and highlight recovery in 10 bit. Also less banding. Overall better image quality, that’s why.
This video is simply excellent! Thank you.👍
what is that background noise all the way?
I don't hear anything… just double checked on headphones. What are you hearing?
PhotoJoseph nothing special, it’s just your movements on the chest mic. It does happen, i hear it too through the whole video, but not very aggressively. Keep the great work :)
xt3 does 10 bit internal 4K 60p..
it's a very tempting piece of kit... ;)
blackmagic pocket 4k does 12 bit raw 4k 60p. I thought xt3 only did 10 bit in 30p, can you link a source that says it does 10 bit 4k 60p internally
yeah my own camera is the source
8:15 OH NO I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE SWEET BABY JESUS!#$##!
And don't try to fix the SD card compartment rubbery by yourself. Engineering suck and Lumix should replace those for free. I was able to swap it but after the process my camera turns on but it gives no image. I dont have camera anymore. #Lumix_stories
of course, you could just know that one is a monitor and one is a recording device. it's sad that someone pays you to do this.
It’s sad that trolls have keyboards, but whatcha gonna do.
i'm gonna enjoy that a ten-second bit of snark obviously hit a nerve... trolls love that shit. we feed on it.
Why use an extra screen at all ? You already have a Ninja.
I’m reviewing the product. This is a viewer only, not a recorder. So much cheaper.
Pocket Cinema 4K blackmagic does 12bit 60p DCI 4K
So I’ve heard. Read the comment threads here. Also, that camera wasn’t shipping when I recorded this.
get on with it !! Takes you 13 minutes to ramble on about this !! helpful but dude get to the point . another video did this in 3 minutes with all the info needed
Joseph takes a "Local TV Station Morning Show" approach to TH-cam.
Yeah, he's got some good info but... he ain't no Ryan Connolly. Of course, appreciate the knowledge, but I gots lens porn to watch!
I tell a story… I give background… context… I educate. I don’t just give the data points. Why be like every other TH-cam channel out there? Also, it’s live. No one else does this live. No one.
@@photojoseph You do you, Joseph. You do you. :)
Hehe thank you Kit
The new fujifilm Rec 60p at 10bit
OneWayStudio100 PhotoVideo but not in pro res, and not with a 7 inch screen, and not with a hdd on the back, and not with the capability of hdr, and not with a lot preview, and not with a lut baked, and not in avid, and not,.... an atomos adds a host of features.
Good share
dude. you couldn't have done a little recap intro. like. "you might not be recording in camera with these settings" in the beginning? the preamble to the problem is frustrating for the viewer.
This was a live show. Watch it with that perspective and it’s very different.
Not sure how it being a live stream, means you still can't for shadow in a less Click bait way.
👍👍
Like this guy 👍 good video
And I like you! 😁👍🏻
Good point but hee did you really had to take so much time to tell this? For other who get annoyed just as fast as me, skip to..... uhmm I can't say as there are things told everytwhere which are important, just there is alot of talk around it. Just don't use the remote function from your camera to start stop hdmi recorders and you do not have to watch this video :)
I educate with background, reason, intent, understanding, and story. I’m not here to deliver a one minute video. Sorry.
“There are things told everywhere that are important”… correct.
Huhu!!! Good one
The BMCC Can...
The BMCC can what?
PhotoJoseph
i believe somewhere in your vid you may have said "No camera can record 10 Bit internally". and i said " The BMCC can".
Ah. I said “4K60p 10bit”. The GH5 does 4K30p 10bit or 4K60p 8bit internally. Nothing does 4K60p 10bit internally, AFAIK.
@@photojoseph the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K does indeed, even up to 12 bit in raw.
But at 60p?
yakkity yakkity yak
This is elementary stuff. Yes it's a hidden feature, but who would actually turn of the recorder and not the cam ?? Video is a bit long. Perhaps get to the point quicker
In other words, just pay attention to your setup.
this is why a like audio / midi. I/O isnt just I/O its send and receive. you can set which device is the master / slave etc. a wireless connection would get around this problem for the gh5 /atomos set up though. dont know if atomos has wireless.
