Thank You Alpha. Nearly for more than 5 years I unable to use the Scan function and kept my HP 3 in 1 printer idle. Today, I had a urgent Scan need and just browsed the web and seen your youtube video. Thanks for you & the TH-cam. Really Great help!!!!!
I tried this my Epson 635 for the same reason and it worked! I'm out of cyan and it would not scan. WHAT!!! Not cool Epson! I could not figure out a workaround until I watched your video. Once I adjusted a couple of scan settings in the Epson Event Manager I still could not scan......until I clicked 'Test Settings'. When I did it scanned my 10-page document (thru the Auto Doc Feeder) and it's now a PDF in my documents. Thank you for the tip! You saved me $80+ today my friend!
It works with my Epson SX510W series All-In-One printer / scanner. The printer was kaput so I was planning to throw it out because it would not allow me to proceed to scanner without replacing cartridges. I thank you for this video as I now have the scanner function working for me.. So glad I didn't throw out the machine now. My PC won't update to Windows 10 so this process worked for me via Windows 7.
Slightly different approach for my Epson SX435W but got it to work. After selecting the printer, the "Start Scan" option was not there, so double clicked the printer. Epson application opened and there was the option to scan. Thanks Alpha
@@StupidPeopleCompany No, thank you for putting up that video. It is just a shame that less tech savvy people will probably never see it and feel forced to buy more (genuine) ink cartridges in order to continue getting use out of the product they have purchased.
It worked for me. Once I imported it, I had to copy it to my download page so I could attach it as a file to my e-mail. I have a HP Photosmart Plus B209A
Many thanks Alpha. Worked on 2-yr old Epson WF-2750 when connected by cable as you said. Took a couple of attempts after going to printers&scanners. First would only offer flatbed scan, but eventually allowed ADF also. Can't remember how that was. The machine wont print because it says does not recognise the Bk cartridge, colours OK. Which is odd, because the Bk is genuine Epson, the colours are compatables. Just to emphasise, the printer will not print because it does not recognise a genuine cartridge and will not allow wi-fi scanning even though no ink needed. As others say, very poor practice by Epson.
I'm guessing Brother caught on to this trick because it doesn't show the "Start Scan" option. When I try to scan from Brother's scan menu, it takes infinity to try to connect to the printer. Lucky for me, I have another printer, also without ink, that lets me use this trick with no problem. Thanks!
No problem! I'm glad it worked! About the other printer: try to install all the drivers for that specific printer. You can find them by searching the model of your printer online. After that, follow the instructions shown in the video to see if it works!
@Alpha Thaks for the Video. You may also consider the other Windows option "Windows Scan" available in the Microsoft Store for free. Gives more control and preview option.
And this perfectly proves that the hardware doesn't require ink cartridges to scan. Not that anyone with at least one brain cell wouldn't know that by simply using logic but maybe this could be used in law suits. My Epson printer also refuses to scan. They even admit that the original ink cartridges have to be installed in the printer for the scan to work even if they are empty (which is a lie btw, since my printer then still blocks the entire printer menu display and refuses to do anything). It's crazy how they are still allowed to do this. Thanks for the video 👍
You can choose the flat bed option, put the paper where you can open the printer like a "lid" and you'll see a glass. Mane sure to place the paper you want to scan on the glass before selecting the flatbed option, and it should be able to scan your document.
Bro you are GOD sent !!! Huge Thanks for making this video. I was almost ready to throw my Printer in Year 2021, but you saved my ass !!! Cheers from a fellow TH-camr !!!
Doesn't work with Epson CX3800 series, since the unit SETS PROBLEM CODES in the physical machine independent of the software. The scan APPEARS to complete, but when it finishes (the "progress bar" gets to the end), it pops up an error window and states the unit has a problem and needs troubleshooting. Thank you very much anyway!
In my case I couldn't just click on my printer and on the scan button, although I've updated the driver beforehand, but on Win 8.1 there's a native app called Scan which worked for me. Hope this comment might be helpful for people with the same issue ;)
EPSON STYLUS SX600FW - doesn't get past replace ink and so will not communicate with computer. Tested on windows 10 and scanner software updated from Epson website.
Sadly your method did not work for my new Cannon TS 3522 printer/copier/scanner. Without both ink cartridges, it will not scan at all. 2023.01.26. ....... Please let me know when you come up with a solution for this new printer. Thank you.
Thankx man I will try this. I spent 2 hours setting up my all in one Epson XP-900 But dam thing says Need Megna Ink.. and I am like WTF Does it need ink to Scan the document. I think it has to do with Installing software with every thing which is recommended by printer manufacture one of the BS in it is to block and not allow user to do any thing unless they buy ink and from them for twice the amount of a printer. And they specially tell you not to just connect printer with out software so they can sell ink.
The software is actually important in order to install the drivers the printer needs to communicate with the computer properly, but after installing the software, you should use the control panel. Hope this helps!
Ok. Have you tried leaving the paper you want to copy on the printer in case after the window closes, the printer tries to scan your document or picture?
Didn’t work for my Workforce 520 with a cable connection. Indicated, “The current picture could not be copied because the scanner or camera is in use.”
Ah, that's unfortunate. I wish I can do more, but that's beyond my knowledge. Thank you for mentioning the problem. I'll make sure to work on a solution later on.
I think I found the problem: try reinstalling or updating all the drivers related to your printer, and try again. Let me know if that works for you or not.
Epson TX710W scans Bummer it won't work for direct to USB though - which is how I usually use it At least most Canon ones let you hold the cancel button - which resets it Epson are thieves and I'll NEVER buy another Epson product !
There are some other Canon printers that won't work with this method, says some of the viewers of this video. But yeah, the fact that it won't let you do that might be some of the tactics of the makers of the printer in order to make you buy ink. Luckily, there's always a way around it!
Really appreciated, it worked ! They block you for any other function even though no ink is required to scan... Thieves...
Thank you for watching!
exactly!

You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this video. I've been sitting here getting frustrated at my printer for hours trying to get paperwork in on time.
Thank you. Even though your video is a few years old your tutorial worked perfect for me in Windows 10!!
Bravo! You solved an annoying problem! I only use my Epsom Printer for scanning so couldn't until I viewed your video. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much! I was so frustrated, and your video solved my problem.

I like this because you show me how to scan. And, we both used the same calculus book.
Really? What a coincidence, hahahaha.
Thank you bro.....it worked for me......love from india🇮🇳
Hey, I'm glad it worked!
I used this on my epson workforce 520 and it worked. thank you.
Thanks for letting us know about the printer!
This worked great! Thanks for the advice!
Hey, glad it worked!
Thanks ! Almost went out and bought me a new scanner.
Thank you. Got me out of a scrape. Nice and easy too.
Really glad to hear that man!
I have a completely different printer to yours and it worked for me, so thankyou !
No problem! Can you please tell me the printer it fixed so I can write it in the description of the video please?

Guess haters will always hate hahaha. Thank you for watching!
By the way: what printer brand did you fix?
Thanks a ton Man
It helped a lot

It does not work for Canon Pixma MP180. The scanning window closes by itself.
Ok. Try to update the drivers and try again. Let me know if that works our for you.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you so much for watching, attempting to solve the problem and mentioning the printer on the comments!
That "start scan" option is missing for me..
Gave me enough information to do something similar on windows 11 for a 7 year old printer with windows vista drivers
I tried this with my Canon Pixma TR8250 and it didn't work. Seems as thought the newer models have gotten hip to this little loophole.
Have you tried updating the drivers?

My printer cum scanner is cannon prxma 287. this is not working
Did you try updating the drivers?
okay so im trying this with cannon epson 500....as soon as i click on scan, the window simply closes. Can you help me?
Do you have the printer connected to the computer with a cable?
Alpha Yes.
Ok. Have you tried leaving the paper you want to copy on the printer in case after the window closes, the printer tries to scan your document or picture?
Alpha I made sure that the connection was alright and I placed the paper also....I even waited for a while to see if anything happens
I will make sure to do some research about the problem to attempt to fix it. I apologize I'm not able to work on it right away.

:( mine printer keep saying nothing in the feeder when there is
Does your printer have a flatbed?
Alpha yes anyway I just got the scanner by itself for 70.00 I use scanner more anyway lol
Why does my EPSON WF-2660 need ink to send a FAX? I should be able to scan and fax from my EPSON without ink!!!!!!!!!!!
I asked the same thing before I figured a workaround lol.
Mine still doesn't work
Did you update the drivers? What printer was it so we can let viewers know it will not work.
I can't find that button on windows xp. :/
Omg I had no clue a scanner uses up ink... I thought the image was done electronically
Yeah, some companies program the printers like this to make you buy them.
Me too
I cant see the video
What does it say?
These are very shady practices on the Epson’s end. It can’t even cover to WiFi if there is no ink? Wtf?
Either that is a bad design by the engineers who made the printer, or they do that on purpose to force you to buy ink.
These companies should end up in a tribunal.
When I try it I get an error lsg saying the machine cant be used,....NEVER BUY EPSON
:(
Epson TX710W scans
Bummer it won't work for direct to USB though - which is how I usually use it
At least most Canon ones let you hold the cancel button - which resets it

Impressed.,,if that would 3y old child conclude.,. Gj, waste of time...
I don't get your point...
didn't work
Did you update the drivers before attempting to scan the documents? What exactly hapenned?
Thanks man
No problem :D.
