Dame Maggie has become so famous for high-end drama roles, we tend to forget she can also do comedy, sing and dance...and does them all magnificently. Thanks for the reminder.
You have eloquently articulated precisely why I'm sitting here grinning my face off AND in shock. As witty as I know she is, and an incredible actress of course ... I honestly was unaware of what else she could do in terms of singing theatre. This clip is a new favorite.
Julie Andrews years ago found Maggie Smith in tears on an elevator. Maggie was making her first Broadway play, was stone broke and stranded. She did everything and more for Maggie. Julie is the reason Maggie loved doing Carol's show - Julie and Carol were like transatlantic sisters.
The thing is, this song "You're So London" was performed by Carol and Julie at Carnegie Hall. I find it a little odd that she's reprising this song here with Maggie Smith. It's a great little comparison kind of song, but Carol and Julie did this one first. It would have been nice if the show could have created something a little more custom tailored to Maggie rather than redoing a Carol and Julie skit from years before. That's not to say this wasn't well done, though.
Maggie Dame did just a wonderful job sing with Carol in this clip I have seen many of Maggie Smith's films but I would have loved to have seen her on stage I bet she was fabulous on stage in Private Lives
Great seeing Maggie Smith in her younger years. I miss these types of variety shows that I grew up with. It was family entertainment with all of the funny sketches, the singing & dancing. It might be old-school but I wish shows like this would come back. I know I would never make it with the new generations now but I can always wish.
It might. It's worth mentioning that some of the sketches on the Carol Burnett were very hard-hitting... ahead of their time, really. I bought two sets of DVDs of the Carol Burnett show for my father, and my husband and I were astonished how painfully on target some of the humor was.
What a lovely sketch....oh Maggie, God rest your beautiful soul. Thank you for your delightful self bringing us so much pleasure on earth. You are sorely missed but will never be forgotten. 🌹
What a GEM of a find, two incredibly talented Actress's in the true Grand Style just at the time when their careers were starting to blossom. RIP Maggie Smith.
Me too!! Maggie Smith is my favorite actress. Ever since I first saw her in the original “Clash of the Titans” as the goddess Thetis, (I was around 8 years old) I’ve been a huge fan of hers.
What a wonderful clip! Carol was/is famous for her way of generously, delightfully sharing the stage with other women. Maggie was more than a national treasure - she was a worldwide treasure right up to the end. So beautiful and hardworking…how she will be missed!

It shouldn't be strange! So many people seeing elders only see an old person instead of a someone who lived a long life full of youth and experiences. I never understood that. Do others not want to think that one day they will be old too, and as such repress the thoughts these old people must have lived a life before getting old?
Despite what Pati Vi wrote above (and I agree with her, in principle), I'm with you, Chris H. *Maggie Smith is practically a different person* now from when this video was filmed. The shape of her face, of her nose, her rhythm of speaking... she has changed *dramatically* since she performed in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie... and this video. In contrast, I saw Carol Burnett in person about five years ago (she did a one-woman show in San Francisco), and she still looks and sounds pretty much the same as she does here in this spectacular song.
I wish more people, especially people my age, would appreciate this kind of entertainment more. This class, talent, and style are not popular anymore, and it makes me sad.
Yeah, in the sense that having talent and actually taking time to build your craft isn't popular anymore. People want instant gratification that they're awesome, to the point that if disappointment comes, they can't handle it.
I think this exact same thing whenever I see these kinds of clips. There's still a big appreciation for it even among the very young; maybe even more recently while we have so little of it.
