3:51 Carol "you're so Pall mall, you're so Benson and Hedges" Julie "I don't smoke!" Carol "and I'm so corn cob pipe" Julie "and you shouldn't either" How can you not LOVE these two!?
Heavenly! I love the little cry in Carol's voice when she sings, it is what makes her Tarzan so great! Julie is perfection of course! Their genuine friendship is priceless, no egos!
I first became obsessed with the Maggie Smith version from The Carol Burnett Show, and I didn't realize for a couple of years that it had originated with Julie! Both are so fun.
One of the greatest openings to a live (on kinescope and videotape) television special, and a fine time capsule: at the time of this 1962 special Carol and Julie were primarily stage stars; neither had begun their careers in film and television. They're both somewhat new here, emerging on a grand stage in evening gowns, boas and gloves, beginning a 55-year friendship for the world to see.
You know its funny because I have an American friend and I am very much English. We both love Carol and Julie and we sing this song all the time! Chum this song is dedicated to you lots of love xx
I laughed out loud within the first few seconds of their performance. So did Julie. Awww... I wish I had been alive when Julie Andrews could sing. She lost her voice the year I was born. Sad... "No, it's troooo, it's troooo!" "I don't smoke... you shouldn't either!"
You do! You do! I don't, I really don't. Oh I don't know. You're so elegant, so lady-like. You're so London, you're so Kensington Gardens, and I'm so San Antone What's wrong with that? You're so harp strings, you're so chamber ensemble, and I'm so saxophone It's my favourite instrument. You're so kippers, so caviar, and I'm so liverwurst You're so Shakespeare, so Bernard Shaw, and I'm so Fannie Hurst! Fannie who? Fannie? You're so Harpers, you're so Manchester Guardian, and I'm so Daily News You're so white pumps, you're so pink satin slippers, and I'm so army shoes! Wherever you go, you belong Oh Carol, you're wrong, wrong, wrong You're so hi there, you're so put-her-there-partner! and I'm so how d'ya do You're so pogo! You're so Pop-eye, and peanuts, and I'm so Winnie-the-Pooh You're root beer! You're ginger ale! And I'm so lemon squash You're so 'oh, hey bud, where's the ladies room?' and I'm so 'may I wash...?' You're so Mermen, you're so Rosalind Russell, and I'm so Deborah Kerr Oh I love her! You're so 4H! You're so SPCA! And I'm oh, so DAR! Wherever you go, you belong No, you're wrong, wrong, wrong! You're so Pall Mall! You're so Benson & Hedges! I don't smoke! Carol: And I'm so corn-cob pipe... You shouldn't either... D'you know what it's like going through life looking like a corn-cob pipe? Oh, don't be silly! Let me tell you! You're coyote! (howls) You're prairie dog! And I'm so birds and bees You're so dirndls! You're so petticoats! And I'm so PVDs! Face it, Julie, you are HEAVEN! You know what you are? You're christmas! And cotton-candy! And carnivals! Oh? You're a little girl in her first prom dress, tripping down the stairs on her first date with stars in her eyes! Wait a minute. You know what you are? You're hayrides, you're Halloween! And you're firecrackers on the fourth of July! You're a little boy at his first ball game, waving his pennant in the breeze Um... You're our boys overseas! So We'll be partners! We'll be hotdogs and mustard, a twosome, a duet! We'll be buddies! Just like Huntley and Brinkley We're Andrews and Burnett. Wherever we go we belong, we belong, we belong Together!
I rememmber being 12 yrs old, and so in love with Julie Andrews that it hurt. I bought the album of this music for $3.00, and listened to it till it scratched and wore down.
i love julie and carol! they are wonderful comedians! i especially love the part when julie says: "i would like to appologize from the bottom of my heart for this aporling reach of taste!"
I loved seeing this again after so many years -- I have thought of this song occasionally over the years and I always think of "You're so ... 'Hey Bud, where's the Lady's Room?' and I'm so ... 'May I wash?' " Ha ha! Thanks for posting this!
Believe it or not, this was a summer TV special (not regular season) in 1962. I taped it with my Webcor and later got the LP, which I played to death. Every number is really creative and witty. How funny it is to see Julie Andrews spoofing The Sound of Music in the Swiss Family Pratt number, a role she would later be famous in. The CD was just reissued last year and includes their later 60s special as well.
You’re so “Hi there!”, you’re so “Put her there, partner!” and I’m so “How’dya do?” You’re so Pogo, you’re so Popeye and Peanuts and I’m so Winnie the Pooh You’re root beer, you’re ginger ale and I’m so lemon squash You’re so, uh, “Hey, bud, where’s the ladies’ room?” and I’m so “May I wash?” XD
Carol sang this with Maggie Smith! Hands down this one with Julie Andrews is far better, in all aspects, singing, rendition, & simply fun & that natural flow of grace & humor! Carol & Julie got chemistry!
Brings back childhood memories of sitting around the TV for this special. A long-time fave of mine, and it's great to see clips of it on TH-cam so folks who never had the chance to see their work together can witness just how talented both ladies were (are). Carol singing "Meantime" was a show stopper, too. Now I hafta go looking through my old record collection for the LP of this. [lol] I think I may have worn it out from so many listens, memorizing the lyrics and numbers in the show.
Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall is an American musical comedy television special starring Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett, broadcast on CBS on June 11, 1962.
Yes, 'Oldie', this number was written especially for Carol and Julie to sing on their special by Mike Nichols and Ken Welch (he also collaborated with his wife Mitzie on "special musical material" for Carol's stage and TV appearances over the years; they always got special credit at the end of her variety show).
OMG this is pure entertainment. I'm sad that I took them both for granted when I was young. There's nobody alive today that could do what they're doing.
What a treasure clip of my two favorite entertainers. Such a talent of musical theater. I love it. There is also another version where Carol songs with Maggie Smith in her show.
"No Mozart Tonight" is one of the most entertaining openers I've ever heard. It would be great to hear it extended. Was it written for this special? And "Your So London" is awesome! Very funny.
So we’ll be partners! We’ll be hot dogs and mustard- A twosome, a duet We’ll be buddies just like Huntley and Brinkley We’re Andrews…and Burnett Wherever we go, we belong, we belong: We belong together!
Well, it doesn't get any better than this! Julie, Carol, Bernadette, Sutton, all of Broadway's leading ladies could beat Nicki Minaj or Rihanna any day.
I think she is imitating Richard Burton as King Arthur in Camelot here, Julie (1962) was stil playing the role as Queen Guinevere opposite Burton. Actually there is a clip of the original (Camelot) on TH-cam, just type "Ed Sullivan + Camelot".
I fear the technical quality probably wouldn't be acceptable to some stuffed shirt in the broadcasters. (Personally I wouldn't mind that - arguably it even adds to it.)
How fabulous is the pair of them?!? If only my name were Carol...my best friend's name is Julie, and she's more like Julie A., while I'm more like Carol. =3
Carol Burnett was my alto heroine. She could belt out in a chest voice, and never seem to go flat, and if she did, that wonderful, silly putty face of hers covered it up. I would have loved to see these two perform. Both women raised in the tradition of vaudeville. If you haven't read Mrs. Andrew's latest book, "Home", I highly recommend you do so.
Unfortunately I don't have the lyrics...But I think a bit of googling will help you;). @ KimLoveJulie: it was taped at Carnegie Hall in New York City. ;)
Julie pretending to be scandalized by Carol is my favorite.
3:51 Carol "you're so Pall mall, you're so Benson and Hedges"
Julie "I don't smoke!"
Carol "and I'm so corn cob pipe"
Julie "and you shouldn't either"
How can you not LOVE these two!?
Julie actually said "Well, you should like that" after the corncob pipe line
Julie: "You're so Merman (Ethel) you're so Rosalind Russell and I'm so Deborah Kerr."
Carol: "oh I love her!"
Lol they are the best!!!!!!
Perfect combination. This is true musical comedy.
"...I don't smoke....and you shouldn't either!!!"
They're brilliant.
They always held hands in these. How sweet :)
I am nearly as old as this, but somehow have never realised how talented Carol is.

Awww...
I wish I had been alive when Julie Andrews could sing. She lost her voice the year I was born. Sad...
"No, it's troooo, it's troooo!"
"I don't smoke... you shouldn't either!"
I wish entertainment was still like this… when it had class and real passion and was about having a good time, not going with the trends.
The opening part of the performance is very much playing into trends of the time and commenting on popular music. Get over yourself.
This is quite literally going with the trends. Just say you have a superiority complex.
This is exactly what the trend was at the time. And there were other types of music at the time that were much, much more risqué…
"You're so White Pumps"
"THEY'RE BLUE!" LMFAO!
You do! You do!
I don't, I really don't.
Oh I don't know. You're so elegant, so lady-like.
You're so London, you're so Kensington Gardens, and I'm so San Antone

They were such good friends. I wish they had gotten a show together. I would have been wonderful to see them act together.
This is so hilarious!!!
The perfect tandem!! :))
"You're so white pumps..."
and Julie looks down at her feet and says "They're blue!"
I rememmber being 12 yrs old, and so in love with Julie Andrews that it hurt. I bought the album of this music for $3.00, and listened to it till it scratched and wore down.
These two are Magic together
"And I'm so, 'may I wash.'" LOL! LOVE Julie!
i love julie and carol! they are wonderful comedians! i especially love the part when julie says: "i would like to appologize from the bottom of my heart for this aporling reach of taste!"
"appalling breach" 🙂
I can't believe that instead of this brilliance and talent we get Glee!
awh, what i would give to see this show in full colour and HD!
(aka, live)
:|
Gawd, Love the LYRICS! they do have great friendship through these years. Love them both!
".….and I'm so, may I wash? " I love you julie! 😍😘😍
I loved seeing this again after so many years -- I have thought of this song occasionally over the years and I always think of "You're so ... 'Hey Bud, where's the Lady's Room?' and I'm so ... 'May I wash?' " Ha ha! Thanks for posting this!
Incredible to think that these two brilliant ladies are still alive and going strong even today (September 2024)😊❤❤
if tv shows were like this still..
Believe it or not, this was a summer TV special (not regular season) in 1962. I taped it with my Webcor and later got the LP, which I played to death. Every number is really creative and witty. They're Great!!! Thumps up for Julie and Carol
Boy, those two could belt it. Big Broadway voices!
saw the original broadcast
wonderfully inventive
The Odd Couple of Broadway. Love this :D!!!
Terrific performance and so entertaining, great fun and energy. Such uplifting stars
You’re so “Hi there!”, you’re so “Put her there, partner!”
and I’m so “How’dya do?”
You’re so Pogo, you’re so Popeye and Peanuts
and I’m so Winnie the Pooh
You’re root beer, you’re ginger ale
and I’m so lemon squash
You’re so, uh, “Hey, bud, where’s the ladies’ room?”
and I’m so “May I wash?” XD
two of my favorite actresses on the same stage ^^ they really inspire me i love them!!
Carol sang this with Maggie Smith! Hands down this one with Julie Andrews is far better, in all aspects, singing, rendition, & simply fun & that natural flow of grace & humor! Carol & Julie got chemistry!
mlCH08 HC Yeah, it's definitely better with Julie. And she sang it with Julie first anyway.
I prefer the maggie one🥺
No comparison please. Love all versions 🤗
Of course Carol and Julie is BEST - Maggie Smith is NOT a singer - but I doubt Julie can do Shakespeare!
So different cant compare. Both good.
Brings back childhood memories of sitting around the TV for this special. I like a Maggie and Carol version too! ;) but this is amazing!!
"Wherever we go we belong...together!"
Yes, they really do! Sooo great...! :)
"We're Andrews-" "-and Burnett".
I love them together ! Am a huge Julie fan! My Queen!
Oh, how I wish I could have seen this live! Unfortunately, the year I was born Julie lost her voice :(
Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall is an American musical comedy television special starring Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett, broadcast on CBS on June 11, 1962.
JFK was the 35th. U.S. president, 1961 - 1963.
I was age 7 to 8.
Love this song!! Julie and Carol r singing beautifully together!!!!
I luv them together!!!😂
thank you! I am huge fan of Julie and I adore Carol, too. I read Julie's memoir many times and that's just my guess.
cuz we're gonna have a BALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
lol Julie ... and Carol ... what a match made in heaven!
I wish that they would release this on DVD. I would so much like to see this show again after all these years.
I fear this Kinescope (basically, filming a TV set) is the best quality you're going to get; video recording hadn't really got going by this point.
This is so cool!! It's so much better than modern comedies because here you see that Julie and Carol are REALLY having fun :D :D
I grew up listening to my parent's record of this event. I believe it was broadcast on June 11, 1963, the day I was born.
This was first broadcast June 1962. By June 1963 Julie was busily involved with making Mary Poppins.
OMG this is pure entertainment. I'm sad that I took them both for granted when I was young. There's nobody alive today that could do what they're doing.
I can't decide if I find this adorably precious or amazingly funny. Either way I love it ! 😁
This is hilarious and the auto-generated captions made it that much better
I hadn't planned on watching the whole thing but these two are just so darn delightful 🙂
What a treasure clip of my two favorite entertainers. Such a talent of musical theater. I love it. There is also another version where Carol songs with Maggie Smith in her show.
Wherever they are they belong... in our hearts. Brilliant performers.
They have wonderful chemistry together👌
Reminds me of my lady and me. She is from Wimbeldon and I'm from. New England....except when she speaks American slang.
This is so beautiful
Mmm! This is class!
Magical
In the years to come they could replace some of the names they said with "We're so Julie and Carol" :)
Love these two.
How spectacular!
"No Mozart Tonight" is one of the most entertaining openers I've ever heard. It would be great to hear it extended. Was it written for this special?
And "Your So London" is awesome! Very funny.
2018 and still in ❤
They were so young.
I love this video
OMG - this is terrific!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for posting this. They are the best duo ever!
So we’ll be partners!
We’ll be hot dogs and mustard-
A twosome, a duet
We’ll be buddies
just like Huntley and Brinkley
We’re Andrews…and Burnett
Wherever we go, we belong, we belong:
We belong together!
More than 50 years later, still true...
@AAMLfan
Richard Burton started off the song "Camelot" with those very lines, which he sang to Julie as Guenevere.
Wonderful
Well, it doesn't get any better than this! Julie, Carol, Bernadette, Sutton, all of Broadway's leading ladies could beat Nicki Minaj or Rihanna any day.
@Pamathey Agreed, like a couple, in fact, they are a couple--a couple of friends. Love 'em. Thanks!
🍀🐘🌹PERFECTLY DAME!!!
BRAWISSISSISSIMO!!!
BRAWISSISSISSIMO!!! 🌹🐘🍀
lovely!
i REALLY
I love this song!! Thanks for sharing :)
julie andrews is awesome!

i would give anything to have been there. i wish i could meet them
:) I have that. It's one of my favorite albums.
TheseSpecials should be rebroadcast annually.
I fear the technical quality probably wouldn't be acceptable to some stuffed shirt in the broadcasters. (Personally I wouldn't mind that - arguably it even adds to it.)
yeah, she is
I really love both of them! :D
Me to me to!!! I will get the chance to understand everything! PLEASE???
Actually, when Julie was doing Carneige here, Burton had left Camelot for Rome already. It was William Squires who took over his role as King Arthur.
@homeichan Really clever :D I wouldn't have thought of Camelot here! Thank you!
How fabulous is the pair of them?!? If only my name were Carol...my best friend's name is Julie, and she's more like Julie A., while I'm more like Carol. =3
they should've had 2 mics like they did in the audio recording so we could hear carol going "[julie] you're halloween. [carol] Halloween?"
LOVE THIS!!!
I’d forgotten this one; think they did it in Carol’s show.
It was a special, 1962-June-11 (see other comments here).
Women were so pretty back then. True beauty
And nice dresses too.
Look at Julie's face @ that point... :)
When the entertainment industry had class and class acts.
Carol Burnett was my alto heroine. She could belt out in a chest voice, and never seem to go flat, and if she did, that wonderful, silly putty face of hers covered it up.
