    Another wonderful, thoughtful explanation of the intricacies of the coronation rite. It'll be great to have this knowledge filed away while watching next month.
    For me, the most fortunate person in that procession may be the one carrying the coronation spoon in the pouch against his chest. He's entrusted with the vital task of keeping that ancient gem warm so that the King will not be startled by cold metal during his anointing (a much more glamorous version of a doctor warming the stethoscope 😃). I must also note that no one tops 17th century men for their impressive hairstyles and hats. They make fascinators look drab. 😄

    Charles is a huge fan of Sir Hubert Parry, so I suspect that his setting of Psalm 122 will be played (as it has at every coronation since 1902), which definitely includes the Vivats. There has been a lot of speculation in the choral music world about how they'll fit in the syllables, being so used to the most-recently-published scores with "Regina Elizabetha" ingrained in everyone's rhythmic minds!

    Thanks for explaining the Westminster scholar salute. I watched Elizabeth II’s coronation about a month ago to know what to expect and loved the salute. It was so unexpected but came just at the right moment as she lifted her skirt to mount the dais. Perfect timing. But it was hard to make out what they were shouting. The Latin isn’t that hard to understand even without subtitles. But as is frequently the case with multiple voices in a large space, articulation is undercut by acoustics. They’ll have to fiddle with the meter for Vivat Rex, Vivat Rex Carollus. Not so much with Vivat Regina Camilla. I regret to say that there will be unkind misinterpretations of that. (In fact, if I were Charles, I’d just omit the salute for Camilla altogether. It’s too prone to farcification) I’m glad I’m not British so I have to pretend she’s an example of virtuous womanhood. Somehow, the two of them triumphing in the Abbey after their years of intrigue just feels icky to some of us. Well, anyway, thanks for the overview. Nicely done.

    You know, what you're doing is what the printers did back in the day who made all those diagrams with people in them and letters next to their heads and a legend/key in the corner to tell the reader who's who: you're describing and explaining everything that's going on. You're the modern engraver making those little pamphlets to be given out to people as their guide to everything that will be happening on the day.
    And you know what that means -- in 300 years time, there's a chance that someone else will be doing the same thing in some other unimagined medium when the coronation of Edward the 19th or Elizabeth the 8th is being planned, and they will be walking their audience through your ancient explainer videos.

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you, but I really didn't. I pronounced it as it is traditionally pronounced in England and just as it will be pronounced, not in Italianate fashion. Latin pronunciation has always differed from country to country. The way liturgical Latin was pronounced in England also altered over time, credo, for example, was produced with a long rather than a short e before the Reformation.

    Please don't say that Richard III "usurped" the throne. It is simply not true. He was offered the crown by the Three Estates of the Realm, and that act was later confirmed by parliament.

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is one view he usurped the throne through his own political machinations - the offer by the three estates was the conclusion of a carefully orchestrated campaign that began as soon as his brother died. • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  ปีที่แล้ว

      I went through a Ricardian phase, I was even a member of the Richard the Third society - then I came to a different view based on the evidence. Yes his reputation was trashed by the Tudors, but not wholly without justification. Yes Henry VII was also a usurper and not a pleasant figure and with the flimsiest of claims to the throne, but his action did stop civil war continuing. You can't make a saint out of either of them!
