My percussion teacher was really cool. If it weren't for him, I would've never lasted 6 years in music school. He was about 60yo, but he would give you extra lessons if you needed it for free, took students with good grades for ice cream and told us to "ruin him financially" because he was paying for our desserts and he was always so kind and considerate. His students always got the most competition awards because he knew how to positively motivate us.

I had that situation when I was attending the piano class as a singer student. I spent several weeks learning my Chopin so that the piece would be just enough ready to be worked on and she criticized me everywhere during the first class so I started crying. Ofc for her as a professional pianist it was easy to just sight read it but I actually had put a lot of effort before coming to class. She said, "I realize now that you need to get praise from time to time and not just criticism." And she spoke to me in a much milder manner after that. She was a good teacher and that Chopin turned out pretty good as well.

I don't play any instrument, but man is this giving me dance lessons flashbacks. Once we were practicing jumps and I couldn't get it right, so I spent five minutes gathering courage to ask my teacher for suggestions on how I could improve (I was very shy and already had self esteem issues). She just said "attending more classes would help, but since you can't be bothered to put in any effort..."
I was shocked, because she knew exactly why I couldn't attend all classes (I had weekly tests at school at the same time as the lessons). I practiced at home whenever I could to try and make up for it. I pushed through the rest of the class and then cried in the bathroom with my hand over my mouth. Those were some of the most painful seconds of my life. I felt so bad I almost quit.
I'm better now, but that women crushed me hard.

I’ve been through a very similar experience. Basically that, but with a lot of fat shaming cuz I was a chubby kid. So what if landed slightly heavier that the others, but even then there were some who still landed heavier than me but since they were ‘skinny’ they got away with it. My teacher was basically the Aussie version of Abby Lee but without the reality TV and instead of as much competition between the girls, although we still had a pyramid-esque style hierarchy, and more body shaming and racism. I turned away from that dance studio and am now doing a completely new style of dance, ballroom, and I love it.

My teacher is the first one. Always frustrated and stressful. He even makes fun of every single word I say and every question I ask so that it became so depressing and annoying as hell. I quit him and decided to continue lessons with someone who is worth the money and he told me that whatever is the character of a music teacher and whatever circumstances to do in their life they don't have the right to get personal with a student or yell or even make fun of them whether they are minors or adults. So I realized that the music class I take makes me doubt my self and shakes my self confidence just because of the crazy disrespectful teacher. I'm sure I will become excellent with a good teacher so I switched.

My primary school violin teacher the exact same. She even swore at us during orchestra sometimes because we were, and I quote, “So shit we’d go nowhere so we might as well quit now.” But my high school teacher is way too nice, like almost toxically so, and in my lesson times, it’ always my part ender who gets all the attention because she gets stuff wrong (pitch, rhythm etc) more often than me. So, most of my lesson I’m just standing there like 😐 as my partner gets corrected.

Same here! Except by the time I got in my junior/senior year I had a pretty cool orchestra teacher. I wish I had his class when I was a freshman. I had this one teacher in 9th grade..he had us playing Brandenburg and repeatedly too. I was so stressed back then 😭💀 it still haunts me till this day, but I still love the piece. My 9th grade teacher was so nit picky about sightreading, and it kinda made me not like sightreading now lol. I am dyslexic so it's kinda hard to read numbers, and words sometimes so I remember him giving us these work sheets of sightreading measures for hw and I cried a lot since I always got low marks. My last orchestra teacher was so cool I miss those days. Always cherish the days of learning! It's so fun, but also nerve-wracking at the same time lol.

There have definitely been moments where I had been close to crying not necessarily because of him, but rather because I felt so bad for not pushing myself harder in the past. (Of course that could be due to the fact that I’m quite literally the definition of self-critical).

I've seen a teacher like that. She studied with some beginner singers for less than 4 months and after the exam she told them how amazing their singing was. I mean it's a good thing to encourage but her praise went way too much over the top - their singing wasn't even close to being as amazing as the epithets she used.
The bad part is that it might mislead people into getting a false impression of their actual level.

Regarding tears in a lesson, I did horse-riding for a while and there was this little girl who was always (sometimes quite literally) fighting with the stubborn Shetland pony. That horse was the only one small enough for her, but he was a handful. The kid was on the sensitive side and cried regularly under the strict commands from the teacher and the additional stress from the stubborn pony. At some point she grew tall enough for a different horse and had a first test lesson on an elderly sports pony. From that day on she was all smiles and confidence and also suddenly got along with the teacher. I don't know if one can relate this to learning a musical instrument, but I suppose the very instrument you play can make a big difference as well.

Our orchestra teacher was going on vacation for a week so he got a substitute, but the substitute was a choir teacher who had literally never seen an orchestra play. So when we were tuning she was like why don't you guys open your mouths and sing each pitch. We were all like uhhhhhhhhh I don't know how to sing, so for the rest of the orchestra rehearsals that week we learned how to sing in a choir that was the worst week of orchestra rehearsals in my life. @phantasian1592 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

I mean technically in an orchestra you should all learn to sing your tuning note together and then play together starting from the oboes up. Especially wind instruments. Every musician should be able to hear pitch in their head internally because pitch is first and foremost something that comes from the player and not the instrument. This means that finding more and more ways to make sure you’re all hearing the same pitch, singing for example, can be very beneficial for the overall tuning of the ensemble. Now I can’t speak as much for strings as I wish I’d like to, but being able to hear pitches is necessary for every musician. So basically if you’re a musician sing. And embrace it.

I’ve had four teachers total and let’s just it’s been a roller coaster ride. My first teacher taught me from when I was 3-7 and since she only taught little kids she never got frustrated with me much. My next teacher was also very nice but much more serious and she would always compare me to my friend. At that time it was also very hard for me to memorize pieces because it was my first time performing more difficult pieces and I also joined orchestra. Then that teacher retired and I got a new one (and this was the teacher that made me hold back tears during a lesson). I was with her for two years and each year I played one solo piece for our conservatory’s annual showcase. However she never seemed to focus on me improving. Instead, every week we would repeat the same scales and études so much that we never even got a chance to work on my solo pieces so I never felt performance ready. She also had me help be an assistant for the little kids orchestra instead of letting me join one with other people my age and level. I then left the conservatory I had been with for almost my entire life because I felt like I wasn’t learning anything and moved to the teacher I have now. I’m really happy learning with her because not only does she help me focus on things I need to work on but she also makes sure that I know I’m doing some things well and that I should be proud of those things. I even started learning piano with her and I’ve learned so much :)

@@korosuke1788 Eh at the time, I had been playing an instrument for 8 years, and hated my school band director (basically, even when I improved he would still move me down). While I still liked my lesson teacher, it was hard to get motivated. So eventually, I stopped playing that instrument (trumpet) and picked up guitar. Its too bad I had to quit since I had been with that instructor for so long, but the instrument just wasn't a great fit for me.
I've been with it for like 7 years now and its so much better being able to play independently or in smaller groups. Much easier to stay motivated as well with all the online tools such as free sheet music and tabs along with simply more songs out there for it.

My high school marching band director doesn’t get frustrated with me thankfully. He just tells me to fix my errors and my mistakes in a normal voice. But he gets a little frustrated with all of us as a band when we are messing up the drill and music.

Whenever we don't practice or we keep making the same mistake, they go on an "I'm so disappointed in all of you" lecture followed by "Do guys you still wanna be here?" and "Am I doing something wrong? Tell me because I can call in a new teacher for this choir" and they walk out and we all get teary eyed until the teacher comes back in and gives us a life lesson using Philosophy and Analogies.

I am a bit late, but I want to write how happy I was when I discovered this amazing video (which is btw so accurate it almost hurts) and learnt that I am not the only one who cried on the lesson. I play piano and have really cool and kind teacher, but I still cried like twice (and couple of times I was really close) Through she is really good, she's still human and those two times she was frustrated, I was tired and frustrated and I ended up, trying to read notes throught the blur of tears. I remember I was so embarassed, because I am naturally sensitive and a lot of things make me cry, so I thought it was just me. But now I am so happy, that it's pretty normal for musicians to cry on the lessons...

What makes a good teacher: 1. He is strict with musicality / discipline but kind and funny as a person. 2. He / She shows you exactly how to practice. 3. He / She talks about bow technique, about vibrato and after you try this, your piece is a lot easier. 4. He/She gives you the love for music, you can feel that there is a lot love for music. 5. He gives you the courage to try again and again and again. He speaks that you are on a good way. 6. He/She loves you and the other pupils. 7. There is a much discipline, but also a lot of fun and laughter. And sometimes you can have also a chat about something else.
