Toyota bZ4X using Tesla MagicDock

  • CCS charging has become available using Tesla Superchargers with a built-in adapter called "MagicDock". This video shows my experience trying one at the first (of hopefully many) in Minnesota. I downloaded the Tesla app, created an account, then drove to that location. Timing was awesome... just 2 days before the trip I already had planned for driving to northern part of the state. Charging went well. It turned out to be a very good experience to share on video.

    This is very helpful, i’ve been trying to look up someone who uses no tesla vehicles at telsa supercharger so gladly found your video
    I do have a Subaru Solterra EV and i know it’s the same car as toyota bz4x
    So wasn’t sure if i can charge it at tesla supercharger or use my nema 14-50 charger at home to charge my Subaru

    Have you gone back and tried charging from a low rate. Would be interested in seeing the max speed from low charge

      No, that location isn't where I would tend to be really low. Also, I have been waiting a software update that would enable pre-conditioning, which would likely deliver a greater speed increase.

    Do you have a link to where I can purchase the Magic dock?

      MagicDock is part of the station itself, you cannot purchase it. In the future, there will be certified adapters available for other SuperCharger locations. In the meantime, this link shows where MagicDock is available in the United States.

    Holy shit how close do you have to get before the cord can reach? Tesla REALLY don't give a shit about other OEMs with various charging port locations.

      You have to squeeze as close as possible. Thankfully, the V4 stations will have longer cords.

    God this car sucks at charging. 30 mins to go from 72-84. I know it charges faster at lower percentage but that’s still pathetic.

      That is exactly what you should expect from a system designed to strive at keeping the battery-pack cool. You want faster, you have to enable pre-conditioning (the software update for that is expected in a few months). As for labeling something "pathetic" that operates without any trouble whatsoever, unlike some other EVs, I suggest re-evaluation of priorities.

      @@john1701a so you’re gonna defend on here like you do on Facebook. Common John, just admit it’s a pathetic programming by Toyota. They had the ability to study for years what Tesla and others were doing and this is what they released. If you plug in a Tesla without telling it to precondition (or any other EV) they will all perform better than this at this high of a state of charge. That’s what’s pathetic. That they thought this was good and proper to release. How could the engineers believe anyone would be happy with a charging performance like that. It’s Toyotas arrogance or lack of care for EVs probably I don’t know.

      @@Ducatista10 Posting an offensive comment and not expecting any type of defensive response is rhetoric, an obvious attempt to declare superiority. Toyota's priorities are different. They carefully choose when & how electricity is consumed and favor longevity. Don't pound your chest about software updates for others, then turn a blind-eye toward Toyota when they do the same. You know all too well some other automakers didn't rollout pre-conditioning initially either.

      @@john1701a what comment was offensive? To call the charging pathetic?? Does the car have feelings? I never through an offensive comment at you. Just the charging. Which is justified.
      Toyotas priorities don’t makes sense. They have real world results from all these other companies and they are choosing to start from zero/scratch so their product will unfortunately suck and lag behind the competitors in terms of the charging department. Longevity as a priority is fine but don’t start at a point of garbage. Even the other companies when they didn’t have pre-conditioning performed better at charging than this. The best testers of EVs out there for charging curves like Bjorn and Kyle from Out of Spec have shown that this is probably the worst performance for fast charging and there is no need to be this bad/conservative.
      And I don’t know why you are so sure the 2023 cars will be fixed with software update. The testing from Japan and Australia on 2024 cars is what has the improvements. Toyota has never confirmed anywhere that it’s strictly software improvements and not hardware and that it will indeed apply to the 2023 cars.

I have pointed out how software update rollout began prior to 2024 model production starting and that Toyota already confirmed no hardware change. You also know there is a battery-heater in the 2023 capable of delivering much higher temperatures. The fact that some lack patience is not my problem.
