Here’s a reason why the joker doesn’t have a definitive origin, explained by him.

Another reason he doesn't have an origin is he said "If I had an origin I would make it multiple choice"
The real reason is because the writers are using Joker as a two-dimensional archetype to get cheap scares, and modern horror is based off of fear of the unknown. If the audience had a complete understanding of the Joker (which would require knowing his origin) they wouldn't be afraid of him anymore, so the writers purposefully obfuscate it.
There's a comic where, as Martian Manhunter slowly starts to turn evil, he initiates a series of psychic attacks on the world that are in accordance to "his friends deepest desires".
One of which is making every Arkham inmate feel immeasurable guilt and self loathing for their crimes, the Joker very much included. He pleads for the guards to kill him to end his misery.
Upon discovering this, Batman smiles.

I like the idea of making Joker an Indigo Lantern. Might actually start a whole new comic line focusing on Joker's new life on Nok, or his mind's inner struggle against the ring's influence on him, cause you can be certain that he'd definitely try to pry his mind free if he could.

He might say those things but I don't think the ring would actually let him hurt anyone. Murder is always the opposite of compassion, no matter the reason. So he'll be spending eternity wanting to kill out of twisted compassion but is unable to do it.

While finding joker's family is a possibility you must remember according to the omni chair there are three villains with the name Joker. When batman used the chair he asked who was the Joker it replied which Joker there are three. This almost broke Batman as he had not been dealing with not one but three jokers all this time.

I vote for the indigo ring option. I've heard multiple reasonable interpretations that he doesn't actually care about his past, I'm personally not totally convinced that his aggression is a result of a mental disorder (at least not entirely), the indigo rings were specifically made to contain and reform people like him, and Batman has a personal connection to the Lantern community.
I should admit that the indigo rings are arguably unethical in how they work, but since Arkham Asylum and Gotham prison clearly need enough reform to take years to finish, it is a provably effective and potentially temporary patch
I'm honestly not sure the indigo rings would be capable of manipulating the Joker's mind to turn him intro a good person. He has already ressisted multiple mind control attempts and his mind is also known as a endless maddening well of insanity. He's also been described as super sane and when he came out of the Lazarus pit, it had a completely different effect on him than it does on anybody else who uses it.
So there's no real reason to assume that the violet rings will reform him. He may just end up pretending that it did in order to corrupt their entire planet.

However, the indigo rings don't have true minds and probably can't be driven insane, and I'm not sure they reform people so much as massively suppress aggression and inject mental conditioning. He still may be able to resist, especially since I've heard about an arc where several indigo lanterns do that. I think a lot of the problem is Joker likes being Joker too much for therapy to work right, even if he isn't supersane. Given his escape artistry on top of that, it's time to try a new strategy. The indigo rings restrict people's agency more than ideal, but judiciously applied they could be a good temporary strategy, like weighted blankets or vests for special education students who need calming. Like weighted materials, they wouldn't be appropriate for most cases, but it may be worth doing a trial to see if it's an option for Joker. Plus even if it doesn't work, that trial would necessarily be in space and under regular/frequent supervision (probably by green lanterns) so data on Joker's progress (or lack thereof) can be taken, buying time through relativity and taking some of the weight off Batman so if necessary he can come up with something else without looming disaster.
I say we go for the painful and a bit graphic option. Hear me out, Why not just cut his tongue off? It won’t kill him, paralyse him, or deal major damage. The man has literally cut his face off of his head. Cutting his tongue off ain’t a bad option in my opinion. What is Joker without his tongue? I mean, it certainly isn’t his men or Harley Quinn that always give him Ws. Other options like Indigo Ring and Nabu Helmet are a little dangerous IMO. We don’t need another Emperor Joker situation.

One benefit of the indigo ring route is that it makes the person wearing it genuinely *want* to seek redemption, to the point the personality change becomes permanent. At that point, the indigo ring gives them the option to either continue on as an indigo lantern, or become a new individual in their entirity. They also function as the single most secure prison in the DC continuity; the only way black hand and Sinestro were freed of them, for example, was because Hal Jordan actually *asked* Indigo 1 to do so and made a logical argument on why for now, they needed to be the way they were to save everyone.
I think it’s inevitable for most story lines for the Joker to turn his crime into an obsession with Batman, and in these scenarios, I believe two could kill the Joker. The first is finding out who Batman is, as it makes Batman not only feel less special, but also the Joker himself… I mean Batman could be the Joker’s wildest dream of a person or superhero.
The second is Batman dying. Like I said, Joker almost inevitably worships Batman in some wicked sense, and the Joker just would not be the same without him

There was a story called "Going Sane" where the Joker just stops being the Joker because he thinks he killed Batman. He changes his appearance to look like a normal person, gets a job, and even gets a girlfriend. And he's actually happy. He goes back to being the Joker once Batman turns up alive though.
I would argue turning Joker sane is even more cruel than killing him. Imagine realizing with the mind of a normal person that for years you’ve been killing and destroying everything on earth.

It has been shown several times, the best way to stop the Joker is for Batman (Bruce's Batman) to retire or die.
The compassion ring itself is a prison. The Joker, in all of his depictions where he's fighting for control of his body, is very, very good at putting up a fight against mental influences. No prison can hold the Joker. And the blue ring is no exception. He'd rip the ring off his finger, or even cut it off, before burning the indigo tribe to the ground

I think another way could be just to get rid of Batman. As he said in the animate series "Without Batman, crime has no punchline." In that episode he quit crime because Batman didn't stop him.

My plan would be to apply a high dosis of Scarecrow's Fear Toxin on the Joker to break his mind, basically to do a factory reset, but I would need to consider various factors:
-If the Joker is actually not affected by toxic substances.
-If he can experience fear by any means.
-If he becomes even more dangerous while under the effects of the Fear Toxin.
The fear toxin had no effect on him in the comic's

it's just been revealed in the Batman who laughs miniseries that is if Joker is killed his heart release a toxin that infect the nearest person, turning them into Joker. it seems DC took the Arkham Knight idea of jokers blood being infectious and cranked it up to 10 by having joker heart release an actual toxin and if he's ever killed that'll turn the nearest person into a new Joker, this might explain why Joker's true identity is so ambiguous.
Maybe he is not the first joker? There is three anyway and who knows, maybe it's gonna be 6 some day or more, maybe it's a clown like metahuman race of jokers?

@@omegalegion1769 I was actually thinking more of a Matrix situation for Joker then anything, where his mind is doing all the things he wants to do but his body is in the real world in a hibernating state. Basically put Joker into a sort of coma but connected to a computer to see what he is doing in the vr-prison.

Jose Gonzalez If I remember correctly, Joker was pretty meta in that story and realized he's just a comic book character. Being that he managed to "kill" Batman, he finally thought that he was actually real, since an ongoing story can't kill its main character without replacing him. Thinking he was insane for all of those years, he starts living a normal life, only to find out Batman was alive all along. So, Joker's kinda super sane if you think about it. Of course, I could just be conflating the actual story with a TH-cam video I watched, since it covers the same themes. But I definitely remember a story where Joker has "imaginary friends" (as doctors at Arkham put it, to which he corrected them that they're actually "fans") which kinda turn out to be the audience/readers of the comic. So yea, Joker kinda breaks the 4th wall a few times.

This would make it too hard to secure which is why I suggested destroying it right down to the foundation and start again. Preferably by hiring contractors from outside Gotham to avoid them being influenced by Gotham's gangs or supercriminals

Isn't Killing Joke's backstory non cannon? I am also pretty sure that there are multiple Joker backstories non of which are true, it's why his famous line in killing joke goes: "If I have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice". Meaning he might not had wife at all or killed his relatives in the first place.

It is canon... and it was the original reason Jason Todd took the identity of Red Hood, pretty much to wind Batman up (same reason he eventually took the red bat logo too). Easiest example to use right now would be the Under the Red Hood animated film, in the factory we see Bruce's own memories of that night... which he probably told to Jason at some point off-screen during their years together. True a lot could still be made up, like the family, but it is certain that he was the guy in Ace Chemicals wearing the Red Hood that night.

The fight comes down to one thing, situation. If Batman makes the first move, Superman loses. Kryptonite doesn't just make Superman weaker, it makes him useless. Yes, if Superman strikes first than he could kill Batman easily, but if Batman makes the first move, or even survives a second, all he needs is Kryptonite to win. Alternately, he could just beat superman with the hellbat armor, but that's kinda cheating. No, Batman isn't a god and can't take on gods such as Diana and Barry, but there's a reason that Superman isn't the leagues deadliest member.

The most permanent thing that's ever stopped the Joker that wasn't killing or lobotomizing him was Batman retiring.
The compassion ring is a good theory. I’d like to see a Green Lantern comic with Batman appearing and the Joker is the main villain. Green lantern understands why Batman won’t kill him and thinks of another way with Batman. This is where (any) Green Lantern would bring up the compassion rings. From there on a struggle to acquire the ring and give it to the Joker would be a nice touch. Let me know if you disagree or agree with me. I’d love to hear other people’s opinion.

Basically break the joker mentally again. Batman could potentially do this. According to the Killing Joke, the jokers psyci turned to sanity as an outlet (basically abandoning his failure life as a sain person to seek out a life in the dark world). The jokers main joke, however, is that he inflicts pain to suppress his own. If you prove to him the real joke is the jokers persona (turning to the pain of others to supplement and overshadow his own pain and failure as a person), he might actually have another personality override.
Once you make a pathetic person more pathetic, there will be a psychological change. Weather or not DC would make a radically good or bad shift in the jokers persona all depends on the writers. Remember, this happened with "the judge" personality with twoface.

I’ve got one idea to permanently stop the joker without killing him or the way I see it is that the green lantern corps would probably be on the jokers case for a while because you know he’s a mass serial killer, who does not care for human life at all so the best way is to permanently.
