Vegan Sausages / Burgers With Beans - Weird Stuff In A Can

  • A two can special! Suma brand baked beans with vegan sausages and baked beans with vegan burgers.
    These were not cheap - £1.60 per can in my local Co-Op convenience store, but how do they taste, and how do they compare to their meat-based counterparts?

    When I had these a while ago (I always buy new vegan products to try and encourage the stockists), I found the sausages and burgers themselves were a bit tasteless, and didn't hold together well - almost "watery"! I put it down to being steeped in the sauce for so long. I wonder if the non-vegan varieties are just like that?
    If you want to review something vegan and affordable from the high street, try 'Vegetarian's Choice'-brand burgers that all of the Holland & Barrett stores seem to stock (in the freezer). They're an absolute bargain at 99p for four (200g total).

      vase meat, especially processed meat like sausage is not good for anyone’s health. Meat is unnecessary as an every day ingredient, other protein sources are fine. Reducing ones meat intake is good for the environment too. There’s three _really_ good reasons.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @vase I've just been eating more meat in my diet than is probably healthy for me, and I have not been caring enough about what happens behind the scenes (both in terms of animal welfare and environment impact) to produce that meat for me.
      Meat is actually a very good source of nutrition for humans; whilst it is possible to get by without it (and many people do), it requires greater care and design of diet to do it properly.
      I don't see a zero-meat future for myself, but I know I need to dial it back.

    Every sausage I’ve eaten in England has obviously had plenty of food in it of vegetable origin. Some of them were like eating an American hot dog in a bun, only the bun was included in the sausage itself, inside the casing.
    In the USA, almost all sausages are made almost entirely from animals. Lots of fat and organ meats in the cheap ones, and only recently has TVP (processed soy flour) become fairly common in the cheap or “health” varieties...

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, at the low end of the scale, sausages in the UK are really more a kind of bread. I find it amusing that people have argued for protection of the definition of 'sausage' as 'something that must contain meat' when the legal standard here only imposes a minimum of 32%
      We do have very good sausages here too, I should say. Perhaps I need to make a video about that.

    • @tasmedic
      @tasmedic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I reckon the meat based ones contain worse ingredients than the plant based ones. Plus it takes more processing to turn plant protein into something meat like. That's why the vegan version costs more; it's better ingredients and better made.....

    One additional reason for choosing meat replacements - although not necessarily valid for convenience food - is that one can still use similar recipes. One can replace the meat in bolognese and keep everything else the same, enjoying a very similar dish, rather than having to go for an original vegetarian/vegan dish. Also if people insist on eating meat, this makes it much easier to cook for groups, as one can simply change the one part of the meal which is incompatible without going through the hassle of two entirely different cooking processes.

    Tried the sausage one a while ago and enjoyed them a lot, particularly the sauce in which I could really taste the spices :) A little out of my usual budget so what I normally do instead is just get cheap beans (typically the low-sugar ones from Tesco which are a little bland on their own) and mix in a chopped Quorn sausage, but still occasionally get these as a treat :)

I like that you keep your videos inclusive and interesting to people with all different diets. When it comes to this level of 'meat' (stuff in a tin with beans), I'd much rather eat something vegan. Really cheap tinned meat products are very poor so there's really no point choosing them because you think they are superior. They are most asuredly not.
