    *Afterthoughts & Addenda*
    *Pricing* - unlike a lot of meat substitute products, this is one where some of the imitation products are priced cheaper than the meat-based thing they are trying to emulate - although bigger picture: the prices are all in sort of the same range. Prices at the time of buying:
    Plantiful: £6.00 per 100g
    Curator's: £3.85 per 100g
    Jack Link's: £4.85 per 100g
    Wild West: £4.00 per 100g
    King's Bacon Jerky: £6.00 per 100g

    If they don't try to imitate the taste of meat, but just a good texture and flavor and turn it into a good snack food to make it a _replacement for jerky at the appropriately lowered price_ (given how expensive jerky is per ounce) I'll happily try it. Then again, it doesn't need to be vegan for that

    • @lunarose9
      @lunarose9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      normally the less like meat something is, the easier it is to get a good vegan version of it, chicken nuggets and sausages can be done pretty easily because they are reconstituted offal paste with seasoning, barely meat in the same way a chicken leg or pork chop would be. I am actually surprised these were kind of bad because similar items like salami you can get some really good versions of becase the focus is on the seasoning and how processed it it.

    • @farmerboy916
      @farmerboy916 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@lunarose9 Exactly, pure imitations of a simple thing are going to be more difficult to do right than to just do something good on its own merits. In this case I can kind of imagine a really good product more similar to those sort of meat nugget 'jerky's' or dried sausages.

    • @jimheaton9503
      @jimheaton9503 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lunarose9 So easier to imitate things that already have only trace meat content (like those Richmond sossies) - seems fair comment. I have a distant recollection of Quorn breaded chicken imitation being fairly acceptable. Can you recommend a specific vegan salami-alike? I'm genuinely curious to try it...

    • @PotatoPirate123
      @PotatoPirate123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lunarose9 I wouldn't describe sausages as 'offal' as this is almost never the case, and they would have to list those specific ingredients if so. They even have to declare if products contain mechanically recovered meat, although this is rare unless the sausages are hot dogs or incredibly cheap wholesale sausages.
      Cheap sausages like Richmond are usually cheap because they cut the ingredients with bulking agents such as rusk/breadcrumbs, although this can have the unintended effect of making them arguably 'healthier' than some more meaty options, in the sense of reducing pork and nitrite intake.
      I personally quite like cheapo sausages as they take me back to childhood, but as yet I haven't found any vegan ones that taste as close to the real thing as vegan 'chicken' nuggets do. I'm surprised by this, as food manufacturers have been making vegan friendly bacon flavour crisps for decades, so you'd think they could quite easily make a vegan 'cheap' sausage. Perhaps they're trying too hard to replicate Heck and the like.

      @@rolfs2165 Dog treat/food standards are really not that different to food made for humans. There are dog product companies that take short cuts and use really crappy quality, unhealthy, cheap ingredients, and then there are dog product companies that use high quality, natural, healthy ingredients. Just like with any human food product, you HAVE to read the label and know what is in the products you are buying/feeding your dog, and you also need to educate yourself on what your dog needs nutritionally as well as what ingredients are not healthy for them to consume regularly. I’d go out on a limb and say that most dog treats on the market are NOT held to higher standards. Sure, there are some brands who do genuinely use good ingredients and actually care that the product they are making is made with a dog’s health in mind (and are therefor perfectly safe for both dogs and humans to consume), but sadly most dog food/treat products on the shelf are not at all made with quality in mind. Most are just made with horribly sourced, unhealthy fillers that lead to health problems and obesity in dogs (much like the horrible quality processed foods humans ingest).

But my favorite is the basic dried stuff with little to no seasoning. You can walk into any (most) gas station around here and not only find those packaged wet jerkies but a "station" (plastic bins or tubs) with the dry(ish) kind as well, you just use the provided tongs and small bags to pick whatever flavors you want. These are not as tender (obviously) as the pre-packaged kind and feel dry to the touch but are still far from being the leathery and fat-less kind I grew up eating.

    Cool video, honestly often I think vegan substitute shouldn’t be compared to the real thing. They are often very good on their own, but they are really just a different thing, good but different.
    Also if you’re scared of ingredients I recommend you google all of them, I’ll tell you now that the thing added to meat products are way scarier than anything that is added to vegan food

    This ended up about where I expected on the rankings, and helps show that a decent vegan jerky can compare or beat a mediocre beef jerky. Would be fun to see another one of these vids testing other jerkies like noble jerky (vegan, soy based, not a fan overall) or mushroom jerky (surprising, flavourful, stands on its own as a jerky), or maybe compare various meat jerkies like pork jerky, chicken jerky, kangaroo jerky, ect.
    Great video as always and can't wait to see the next food adventure.
    PS: Jack Links all the way

    I really find these foods that attempt to immitate the flavor of meat interesting! Sure, some may be more expensive, or complicated to make but it's always a culinary feat in my opinion, to be able to replicate the taste of one product through the combination of others.
    I've tried cashew cheese before, it's a somewhat similar concept, except it doesn't try to replicate taste of anything specific, it just aims to have the same texture and concistency of regular cheese. It's good, relatively expensive actually, and it's a kind of a mix between parmesan and industrial grated cheese flavor wise.

    I have never had proper jerky because it just wasn't a thing where I grew up but I really like Chinese dried beancurd snacks.I don't know their proper name but my favourite are the soybean rolls and hot and spicy beancurd by bestore. Kings Veggie jerky is actually really good! The texture is so similar to meat… a little but more chewier maybe but I like that. Had a veggie friend feel uncomfortable eating it because of how similar it was to meat… They also don’t try to imitate the taste of meat to closely, just a strong BBQ or black bean flavour depending, instead but tastes really good.

    I think I haven't ever tried any jerky, but what stood out to me as a German: I would call Weißbier many things, but LIGHT would not be anywhere near top of that list! I guess the flavor is comparably mild, but after having a bottle (0.5L) of it, I always feel like I've had almost an entire meal. One of the heaviest beers I could think of, to be honest.
    If you feel adventurous, try it with ~1/6th of banana juice. Especially the cloudy Weißbier go unexpectedly well with it! (It is usually done so that the banana stays mostly at the botton of the glass, which gives a gradient towards banana as you empty the glass. I sometimes mix it evenly, sometimes I don't. Both are great!)

    Just wanted to share an experience. I spent 4 years as a vegan, and I did like how, in 2021, there are so many alternative to meat being made. That said, it was easier to just not eat meat. In my experience, the fake meat was never satisfying enough to make a meal complete.
    For anyone interested in alternative dieting, or removing something from your diet, there is a golden rule:
    If you can do (or don’t do) something for 3 weeks straight, you can pretty much do it forever. Once you are over the 3 week hump, you are basically good to go.

    I already really loved your videos, but on top of it, it's really nice to see a non-vegan reviewing vegan products. I'm attempting to transition to vegan eating, and most vegans I talk to rave about all these delicious products that...taste horrible. For example, I got a Miyoko Mozarella vegan cheese wheel last night, it tasted absolutely disgusting and I had to spit it out, but some vegans I spoke to said it's one of the best vegan cheeses they'd ever tried, and that they had never heard of anyone disliking it. Lol...
