Keeping pay a secret only hurts employees. A lot of companies will try to swindle wherever they can.
Yup, a company makes profit when they pay workers as little as possible relative to the value they produce for the company. (And so often it's sweet people like Austin that get the worst of it)
You try telling people that when someone is talking about their earnings in front of everyone.
Extra credit to the companies that not only make it private, but tell you it's a firing offense to voluntarily share your pay information with other people.
kinda depends actually...on a workplace with workers that are reasonable, it doesn't have to be private. on a workplace where everyone is jealous of each other however, letting them know how much others are payed could cause unnecessary commotion and them asking for a raise they didn't deserve because other workers that "work harder and longer" than them gets more. so in the end, it depends. while it would ensure fairness towards the workers, it could also cause problems of jealousy in the workforce
even when workers are payed "reasonably" for what they do, some would still ask for a raise and compare themselves with others that got higher pay. Worse is the fact that many of those people asking for a raise due to jealousy is those that are lazy to work and have the audacity to ask for a raise comparing themselves with others that work way harder and longer.

@@MySmileStillStaysOn well they literally have different glasses on, different scrub caps or hats/hoods/ sometimes maybe hairstyles... plus clothing/ costumes... each character also sounds different, very skillful voice acting, and back to "looking different" Stevio is careful to hold their facial expressions and body language differently. So there's a lot as to why!

So, for a long time, I abided by the whole "don't discuss your pay" at whatever job I was at. I also would never even try to negotiate my pay--I just accepted whatever they said their starting pay was.
Then I applied for a job as a cashier at a gas station (Circle K, specifically) here on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. It was a second job that I only intended to work at while school was out for the summer (I'm a bus driver). On the application, for "desired pay", I put $10/hr, because that was what I wanted (School bus drivers here are salaried, so I still had my school board paycheck coming in--this job was just for extra money). They have it to me, with no pushback. I subsequently found out, that that, as a cashier, I was being paid a higher hourly rate than their assistant managers, and that really pissed me off; what really annoyed me, though, was the fact that the assistant manager at the store where they sent me, knew how much I was making, and her jealousy over it caused her to be shitty towards ME, instead of her using the knowledge to demand higher pay for herself. We really have to stop with the misdirected anger.
I got fired shortly after my boss found out I made more than she did. I wouldn't tell her, and wouldn't u know it, my next pay stub was accidentally opened before it was handed to me. I tried to handle it by brushing her off saying, I don't discuss pay, but I love my job and would be happy to discuss most any other aspect, then she told me what she made(I already knew, because before I settled at one site I had done hiring for other positions in the area, and had been offered her position, and her supervisors position at one point)
When I had only a year of experience (early 1970s) as a hospital RN, I worked at a community hospital. Pay rates were very low and there was only one RN hired for each unit. Three years went by and I overheard a new RN (fresh out of taking her RN boards) discuss her wages - - - much more than what I made as the charge RN. It was several more years before everyone caught on about new hires making more than experienced nurses.
I don't get why people in America still are slaves, in Europe employer MUST write how big will be your salary in their job advertisement and they can't give you less by law. Also we have 4 payed vacation weeks and unlimited sick leaves (you receive 80% of your average salary while you're sick) and we have free ambulance rides and almost free healthcare.

But what they don't say is how much her hubby the Orthopedic Surgeon pays for malpractice and personal liability insurance. He's covered by the hospital's blanket policy only up to certain limits. And he has golf greens fees, the fancy cars and probably piece-on- the-side expenses too.

At some point, those ER Nurses at the top of the pay scale will be written up extensively until they are fired or quit... so the hospital can hire new grads and save money. The sad truth of being a health care worker working for greedy organizations

You get butt fuc no where if you drive away your skilled labor. Not everyone can coordinate licenses or poc cap samples or even handle the emotional trauma. My leads earn their pay.

It's important to note that difference between $10 and $12 is a lot bigger than the difference between $50 and $60.
At $10 an hour basically all of your money is going into basic living expenses. That extra $2 of hour brings you from $0/hr for luxury expenses to $2/hr for luxury + savings, a literally infinite increase. If $10/hr is underwater, that extra $2 offers a huge amount of relief. 20% is worth a lot of comfort at lower incomes levels, more than just a 20% improvement.
At $50/60 an hour living expenses are such a small portion of expenses that the difference doesn't matter much in terms of luxuries afforded.

When I graduated from college with my first degree (mechanical engineering), the company I worked for kept engineers' 1980 salaries private. Here's why. Female, four year college degree, paid $12K per annum. Lead draftsman, male, no college, vo-tech high school certificate, $18K per annum. Male draftsman, high school diploma, no formal training, $15K per annum. Male engineers four year college degrees, $20 - $25K per annum. When I found this out (the males were bragging about how much they made and I was paid what the secretarial pool got paid), I asked the lead engineer why...and he patted me on the head and said, "Don't worry, honey. Some man will come along and marry you and take you away from all this." At that point, I joined the U S Navy.
That’s why we STILL need the ERA.
And that's why labor laws protect your right to discuss salary with coworkers.

@Joss And I would never have gotten another engineering job. Here's why: when I pointed this out to the chief engineer, I was laid off (not fired). I couldn't get so much as an interview elsewhere. I'd always wanted to join the US Navy, so I did. The recruiters did a background check and the company told them I never worked there. I got my butt reamed for lying. So, I brought in my federal taxes with W-2 forms attached. The recruiter got on the phone and called the company. They said they never said I didn't work there. True story.
Yet you are on another video disparaging female victims of domestic abuse. Telling them that they could get out if they wanted. That they spend more time whining than doing something about it. I guess you are only pro women's rights when it has to do with how much you get paid huh? 😒🙄
@A Wright, she seems to have an independent attitude. She's obviously only giving out advice that she, herself, has lived by. When she was in a situation where she was treated poorly, she took the initiative to leave and get something better. She didn't whine about sexism and demand that the system make it all better for her. She did something herself. To me, that seems like the strong, independent kind of woman that feminists should aspire to be. Just saying.
I have to disagree with Austin on this one. Those should absolutely _not_ be private. Everyone's pay being private is part of how the people up top get away with paying people less than they deserve.
Being able to check you what your employer is paying everyone to make sure there's nothing shady going on is part of your rights as a worker. (And sweet people like Austin are often some of those short changed the most when employers are allowed to keep that secret)
Bingo! One time I was asking my coworkers what they made and the manager pulled me into the office to tell me it was inappropriate. I said they could continue the conversation as soon as I got legal present - as they were attempting to violate my rights. They were absolutely shocked and had no idea it was illegal to tell workers not to talk about pay.
People willing to work for less than they deserve is the real problem.
We have a right to discuss our salaries and if a company states that you cannot discuss your salaries, you need to file a complaint with the NLRB.
In my area, it's actually illegal to forbid discussion of salaries/wages, for that very reason.

I feel this I only made 15.75 an hour working as an ER tech on night shift in 2010 when I lived in VA . Decided it was time for a career change and became a pet groomer, best decision I ever made I love my job now and make more money.

The ER Tech salary is either too high or my hospital is severely underpaying us. 12.57an hour.

I'm in Wisconsin and I get $16.4/hr washing pots/pans with a weekend differential of $17.6/hr at my local hospital

The skit is based in California I believe which has a ridiculously high cost of living. Pay is dictated by cost of living in whatever city and state you live in.

One of my first goals at a new work place used to be figuring out salaries. Turns out, employers will rip you off, even if you have more relevant experience, unless you set the bar. Don't ever accept a job offer that won't pay you what you're worth. If you can't live off the salary you're offered do NOT work for that company!!! Toxic work cultures start by low balling you right out of the gate, promising excellent benefits and raises after X ammount of time, telling you to prove your worth before they fork out a living wage. This is GASLIGHTING. It turns into "we're family so we all do our fair share." When you're denied your overtime that you've already worked-per your supervisors request! This is ILLEGAL most of the time. Unless you sign a contract waiving all your salary rights and leave them at the whim of your manager, companies must pay you for the work you've done, even if you've been fired. Withholding wages is a huge lawsuit that you can get covered by your local labor devision. Point is, the only thing worse than a company who has you pay to work for them, is a company who pays less than what you're worth. At the end of the day, you work a job to feed your family, not to make friends. No ammount of gaslighting will ever make you peers and coworkers "family".

Hearing California salaries always shocks me as a North Carolinian, because our minimum wage here is $7.25 and I make $14 an hour which is considered average.
It's basically to make up for the high cost of rent, and ludicrously high property values.
I make $15 in Michigan as a grocery sticker and still can barely pay half my bills. Hate to say it but I’ve been told by a few people to set up an onlyfans account & I’m considering it as a 2nd or 3rd job.

The rent looks the same? Central Valley in Cali rent is around $700-1500/month almost the same as NC. California CNAs are making $25-39/hr through agency due to pandemic. It all depends on location and facility. I’m making $20.49/hr as CNA at a small community hospital versus my wife’s hospital paying her $18/hr as CNA in big, fancy private hospital. As far as i know, our major trauma hospital are paying CNAs $15/hr. Our non-certified NAs are getting paid $15/hr. It’s messed up especially when the NAs are putting in the same work as CNAs. RNs at my wife’s hospital are getting paid $50-60/hr plus, while my hospital RNs are getting paid $35-45/hr.

@@sylvilaguscunicularius3155 It's important to note that the Central Valley is very nearly the cheapest place in the state. Average rent on a 2-bedroom in LA, for example, is $2500.
Now CA is obviously a massive state, so if you drive out into the far north or far east (away from the parts where people want to live), then yeah, rents more closely resemble the national average.
So while yes, average wages in CA hospitals are higher, its important to note that the nurses working in those hospitals have way higher expenditures.

@Lady Rad I was a Pharmacy Tech Night Supervisor and Jack of all trades. My boss hired a male making more money 💰 We we're all very upset .He didn't last long if I remember correctly. If you think about it Nurses do more than Doctors and the same with Pharmacy Techs /Pharmacist . GNAs do Alot of personal care involving body fluids . Yet they get paid the least.
@@crisunderwood8110 this was the early 90s. I could write a book about that place. One day they bought another hospital in the same city. All our salaries and shift differentials were supposed to be the same. I found out that the other hospital had a two dollar an hour weekend shift differential. It took me two years of constant fighting and gaslighting to get that for our techs working the weekends. It was also a constant fight to get the same pay as the male techs for doing the same job.

Med tec and CNA are a 1/4 step above part-time janitor. Hospitals figure those jobs can be performed by a competent highschool or college student and don't care if they turn those positions over more than a hotdog on your uncle's BBQ. 99% of the real work 1% of the pay.

In California , EMTs make anywhere $13-17 /hr with 17 being very rare and put up with the exact same patients as ER nurses. Less scope of practice I'll give it that, but paramedics only make about $5-10 more an hour from my understanding

Oh my gosh are you serious people actually only let DoorDash delivery drivers walk away with $2.50?!?!?!!!!! That’s criminal! I always double check to make sure my tip is AT LEAST 20% and if it still sounds preposterous (like $3.60 on an $18 order) I will adjust it to an appropriate amount that respects the fact that you all are actual human beings and doing me a monetarily appreciated favor by going out and doing the things I sometimes hate and/or sometimes can’t do!!!!!!!!!! 💕🤷🏻♀️😫😵💫

I'm naive and only found out about negotiating pay and pay differences very recently. As a new grad nurse, I started at $33, and at 1 year of working, I hinted at my manager that I don't think I can wait another year (in this setting) to hit that new base pay. At 2 years, our base gets bumped up to $40. She got it approved for me so I wouldn't leave, and told me this is confidential. This is before any bonuses and differentials. I've been at this job for 1 year and 2-ish months now.
What the fuck? I thought nurses made the same as fast-food workers. Why the hell are so many nurses quitting? I've heard "burnout" but with those salaries??

@@fuzzybunie Hi, just wanted to say that being burnt out doesn't have to do with pay. Being burnt out has to do with emotional and mental exhaustion. Nurses have to care for sick people at their worst and deal with the patient's concerned family too. Imagine the mental toll of knowing any mistake you make can lead to someone's death and the emotional toll of *dealing with and placating or comforting several people who feel like crap physically and their family members scared for their loved one's wellbeing looking to you for answers or confirmation that you're giving the utmost care, and doing all that for 10+ hours shifts daily for years on end; this isn't even taking into consideration the shit that nurses take from doctors and older experienced nurses who could look down on you. No matter how much someone pays you, some jobs still wear you down, and some aren't worth the strain and stress. All of that can cumulate into a nurse's life out of work too, like being exhausted and stress and even guilt if someone dies under their care. My tone here isn't to be demeaning, just trying to explain without being preachy; I really respect nurses haha

If you're talking about salaries at a County hospital, those figures are public records and available they (thru) many sources. But knowing someone's salary doesn't improve the service you get...not by a longshot!

$28.65 an hour (Missouri) 12 year BSN with 2 additional certifications..... CMO >$450k a year but the hospital had no funds for raises or more staff. Left bedside in March.

Wow. Back in the 80’s my mom was a nurse on the regular floor and made $22 per hour. Times do change.
I was so shocked when I looked up myself online. It wasn't accurate as an annual salary due to unnamed circumstances but still, when I was still working only executives were publicly available.
What’s not discussed here is the cost of medical malpractice insurance.
at my last hospital i worked at we had a meeting about we cant discuss each other salary.. then i found out they were wrong for that 😂

I used to work with an RN who had transferred from LA - he told us he made $75 an hour there and had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet but after moving to Pittsburgh he was living very well on $25 an hour. No way I'd ever move to California.

Indiana ER nurses make 22-34
I was salaried at 68k a year. Seemed decent.
Then they started scheduling me from 7AM to 5PM, and 7PM to 5AM. 20 hours a day...7 days a week...for 18 months total...seizures, blackouts, and audio-visual hallucinations became a constant.
Then i quit working in a VA hospital, and got a job chopping up dead people to figure out how they died.
Salaried at 70k a year, but if i work anything over the 50 hours per week agreed upon, i get double time based on the hourly equivalent of my salary.
And people wonder why doctors and nurses prefer private hospitals over government run in the US...

All govt employees info including pay is also public info and can be found easily. Find out what they make and read their records and u will literally shit your pants

I relate to that california comment, i live in colorado and i make 21/hr and i cant even afford rent on my own.. Prices are OUTRAGEOUS. Most places here, even old apartments, want 1800+ for a ONE bedroom. Wasn't even 10 years ago when it was like 700 for a one bedroom. Very frustrating, people stop moving here!! Getting kicked out of my own state..

Dang. If I was an MD, I would move to california. In NC, ER doctors make between 100,00-200,000. Anesthesiologists are the real money makers out here. Nursing in a hospital pays slightly less here.
Cost of living is probably the big difference. If you get paid twice as much to live in an area three times more expensive you're may or may not come out ahead. Do your research on local property values first!
Whereas in vet med, a vet tech and an ER triage tech both make between $13-20 an hour.
Vets also make about 80k to 100k average if they work in a classic setting.
Which I think is ridiculous as well. I'd pay the WORLD to keep my pups safe. The problem is the insurance companies over charge people to then subsidize hospitals and medical docs 💰

Those salaries are crazy. In Finland a nurse makes about 3000$/month. A dr about 5000-7000$/month.
I don't know how taxes work in Finland but in America our taxes are dynamic based on the bracket. The doctor loses at least half his income to tax and the nurses probably lose about 25 percent. Also, cost of living in California is sky high so their earnings are inflated

It isn’t so much the tax part - doctors graduated from med school with a half-million dollars in debt. At least. So they have to charge insane amounts of money to pay back those student loans.
Plus, we have medical malpractice insurance costs here that are INSANE.

Anyway, in Finland, I think your university costs are much more sane…? Plus, I imagine that your malpractice insurance costs aren’t $10,000+ per month?

Remember, you have a lot of services included because you pay higher taxes. In the U.S. we pay a monthly premium for health care. It's NOT cheap either even though we work in health care. Finland has free health care if I'm correct? I believe you have subsidized housing and free college education too? Or am I thinking of Norway?
