Gulzar Song - Chaiyya Chaiyya remains a critical and a commercial success.
Innumerable versions of Chaiyya Chaiyya Remix continue to flood TH-cam and Social Media
platforms even today.
Very few know that it was Chaiyya Chaiyya that drew Andrew Llyod Webber and Danny Boyle
to Rahman for Bombay Dreams and Slumdog Millionaire respectively.
Dil Se.. (1998) was the 1st film, and Chaiyya Chaiyya was the 1st song that brought together
Gulzar, Sukhwinder Singh and AR Rahman.
10 Years later when these three collaborated again for Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire - 2008) they
defied all boundaries. Jai Ho became an international hit, winning Oscars and Grammies.
In between whenever Sukhwinder Singh and AR Rahman came together, the outcome was
magical. Be it Ramta Jogi, Taal Se Taal Mila, Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa and many other iconic
songs.

I have heard a story where Maniratnam wanted Sonu Nigam to sing Chaiyya Chaiyya.But Rehman said there is a singer in Punjab named Sukhwinder who is a folk singer.I want him to sing this song.That’s how Sukhwinder was finalized for this Song.

@@O2indiain a recent interview in Bollywood hungama Sukhbinder paji clearly said that he sang thaiya thaiya and Rahaman sir liked it. Then he create chaiya chaiya song in the same tune and gulzar pened it.

Dil se is a masterpiece.❤️💎 Its album doesnt need introduction. Absolute genius. Ar rahman-Gulzar-Mani ratnam when genuises come together magic happens.
I always felt Chaiyya chaiyya needed to be studied thoroughly to fully appreciate it's quality. Good to hear straight from the horse's mouth. It doesn't have melody of so many other popular or classic songs from other genius composers including ARR's own but yet is the best song ever according to me. So many things had to fall in place for its creation. I feel most fortunate to have been already an ARR fan before the album released and having had the chance to buy and listen to it first time and then unlimited times till now. Still waiting for a better song.. maybe not in my lifetime.

Yes I agree how Rahman perceives the tunes is important. From day one, he decided to give us instrumental version of "Yeh haseen wadiyan" in the audio cassette (followed by Bombay theme, chor chor theme). He very well knew his music is different and amazing. I love his album esp (Meenaxi, Thakshak, Daud, Chor Chor, Delhi 6). Can someone interview him about album chor chor (from Chandralekha to dil hai sanam dil to pyaar kabhi na to theme music) it was an amazing album

This man is not just one who writes lyrics but analyses things with crystal clear precision. There can be no one else better than Gulzar saab to talk about these evergreen songs experiences. Since this album is not only about path-breaking music but great, evergreen lyrics too. There are so many insights he had put in this one episode. Each of them is so point on and his voice has its own unique beauty despite his words being so deep that I couldn't get them if not for these subtitles. So many view points interspersed in one conversation and that's Gulzar saab for you.
Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan holds a unique place in the hearts of music lovers all over the world. This one song had so many achievements in its crown 👑 than the rest of the album that even one episode may not be enough to cover its greatness and borderless repertoire. It has everything that a range of people from common man to an art connoisseur could ask for!
This song is like another Oscar for Rahman which had got its due later. Jai Ho would only fall second to the impact of this song had it been in the same album of Slumdog. Kudos to the entire team for another marvellous episode of this veteran wordsmith.

A very sharp observation made by Gulzar Saab is that ARR uses the same instruments as others but the way ARR perceives and visualizes sounds created and produces them differentiates his music and songs. Though I'm not a Sufiyana fan, Rahman's music made me appreciate its beauty just like Daler's Bhangra made me like Punjabi folk. Piya Hazi Ali may not appeal to me if not for ARR's voice and music in it. This song had its own little magic and place in this universe of music.

5:45 Such a great question about "Rahman Sound". It is funny that when I first heard Chaiya Chaiyya, I actually did not quite like it and thought AR went much away from the Rahman Sound. Note that I had followed him like a crazy since Bombay and have listened each and every song of his. To me Chaiya Chaiyya sounded very different from all these albums. I was unaware that he was continuously evolving the Rahman Sound, which he very soon again showed in Lagaan.

Not sure, why Vairamuthu has no episode in AR Rahman's journey @O2india, I guess many of the songs written by Vairamuthu were later rewritten for Hindi by Gulzar. Especially, Thaiyya Thaiyya words written by Vairamuthu completely fit with the tune and complete the stanza, far better than the Hindi version, even though the Hindi version was written first. O2India should hire a Tamil-speaking host to do so, yeah we have subtitles for the Pan India audience.
Gulzar never translated Tamil to Hindi. DIL SE songs were originally written in Hindi only. Tamil portion is dubbed (Ex : Thaiyya Thaiyya)

Hahaa that's the real story but because Anu Malik was roped in they are talking about his permission to give away that one song to ARR. But see this one song had such magic that even the rest of the songs are hit numbers at that time, most ppl had forgot them all but this one song is what has stood the test of time, even today.

When I searched internet randomly I found "musical instruments and singing are haram in Islam".
But ARR who has adopted the religion composes songs on Allah makes all religious people to love and listen continuously.
I guess Allah might want to take off that sheet from the book when he listens to ARR music. Especially Sufi songs.

According to me Taal song is more better than Chayya song, It should be in Top of all charts.
Listen to thayya thayya (Punjabi), u will hear beats which was later used in Taal.
Yess, even I too feel that way many times because Taal songs have a lot of colour, melody and variety to them whereas Dilse is not per se a musical Magnum opus like Taal but that album that you would hate to listen atleast for the first few times. Because this music takes long to grow on you than the beats of Taal that you can't forget even after you leave the theatre.
I still remember how much I hated listening to the title song of Dil se first time when I heard it on TV. I thought ARR had delivered his biggest flop. It took me several months later to realise it's musical impact and several years later to see it's resounding success all over the world. But yeah, at it's core Dilse music is unusually path breaking and hatke than compared to Taal.
Dilse and Taal (two blockbusters of ARR for two consecutive years 98 and 99) are the best examples of two great albums in two totally different tangents and even genres. As much as I can analyse, one is Sufi based and the other is Hindustani based, one is unconventional and the other is beats and percussion oriented songs for the masses. Both are musicals but yet are very different at their cores. Both had love as the central theme yet are of two polar opposites. Both albums Dil se and Taal music are composed in the light of these central themes and tastes. The love of Dil se is more grey and talks about surrender to death ( Sufi nuances helped here to a great extent) whereas Taal is your typical Bollywood romantic love triangle with a Magnum opus musical feel to it that is all about falling in love, celebrating, a little heartbreak and then reunite but not get destroyed in love like what Dilse is. Dil se is way more abstract than Taal and so is its music.
Forgot to mention, but yes one great thing that's common for both these albums apart from their outstanding musical success is how both these albums have helped Rahman reach a wider audiences both in and out of India and cemented his position as the unbeatable and undisputable King of Indian music esp with the Northern belt audiences. It is only after these two albums were made, that we started hearing those fairy tale stores of Rahman's foray into foreign lands and in the international music scene. Hats off and hail the genius of ARR.
