the 1 rune MD is stock for wrifter, especially with enlightened tutor. also what they're talking about in g1 I think is that there's no priority between paying the 1 for rifter and the damage. duck selects a target for the rifter BEFORE paying the 1 -- he pays the 1 on resolution.
since damage prevention effects from things like Rune of Protection are applied at any later point within the timeframe of the ability (in this case "this turn", the Runes got a oracletext update to clarify that) the effect is not actually in use until damage gets acually prevented. Since the prevention is happening at a later point on the stack than the Flaring Pain, the "damage can`t be prevented"-effect is avtive when the prevention would actually do it`s thing.

That red enchantment in sligh doesn't allow for healing.
