SquidPredator Honestly, I live in MTL and I find it to be way less european than people think it is, at least aesthetically. The old port looks european, but that area is very small, and despite there being nothing to do there is usually where the tourists go.
The city itself is very metropolitan, and I would say is a lot more like New York than any big european cities.

They do have the hottest chicks. Hottest strippers, and the hottest hookers. The hookers we got were so friggin hot, and they weren't super expensive. It was the best time of my life. The night clubs were something out of a movie. We went to this night club (I think our was called opera or something like that), and when we were waiting to get in, there was a guy sitting on the side of the road shooting up heroin. That was the only bad part.

Thisis Hilaruious, but it unfortunately misses a LOT of Montreal, especially when it comes to the culture of Montreal and Quebec.
I have been living in the greater Montreal area ofor many years, and speak English, French and Spanish - but I am only a mere beginner polyglot.
In the streets of Montreal you will easily find some 80 languages in a day, and a multi-generational cultural mix that you will never have enough years to fully scrute!
Here, (in Quebec) the French will say of Montreal:
    >
    Literal Translation:
"Montreal is an island in the province of Quebec"
    Explanatory translation"
Montreal geographically is an island in the province of Quebec, BUT what is really inferred and meant is that Montreal is a _cultural and linguistic_ Island in the province of Quebec.
French, being one of the world's 5 romance or emotive languages, usually is not pragmatic as with English. so no matter how little French you may know, listen to the sounds, or parlance. If you can speak a bit, use even that little with ernest mind and intent. /that can be enough to litght up your listener like a Christmas tree at times, although so many here take bilingualism almost for granted in more recent years.
(Parlance IS a legitimate English word, older than all North America. Historically, it came to Britain at the time of King William if Normandy from France as with many other English words of French etymology.
However many English speakers here have forgotten 2/3 of ther own language.)
In French, they would use the word > on an everyday, take it for granted basis to mean the same, without a second thought!
    (In Spanish it is "idioma".)
Language-emotive cultures are language proud, but that very pride also drives the quality of those languages and their communicative abilities, as well as much of that strong cultural synergy. It is so important that this be understood by all for the common good of all!
Beyond that, if you travel outside of Montreal by about a mere 35 miles, you will likely find little spoken but French - it is almost like a different country! But by virtue of tasking the time and patience to accept and understand, you will find yourself amply emotionally rewarded.
Again, In french the classic word > says it all.
The translation of that is better found in reading the child's French literary classic
. check out your local bookstore for a copy in any of a number of languages. when I say classic, it went down in history for its child-level depiction of an abstract human concept too seldom understood by adults, yet teachable to adults and children alike!

"Tabernac" (literally "tabernacle") more closely translates to "dammit" - an expression of frustration and consternation. Many of the Quebecois curses are of liturgical origin - something to do with its history and being very strongly influenced by the Catholic church in the past.

Sacre Bleu! Lol, that expression is barely ever used in France let alone French Canada. Many Americans fail to realize that Canadian French is
very different from the French spoken in France in both pronunciation and diction, syntax and semantics. Yes two people from France and French Canada would not have a problem communicating but nevertheless the difference in pronunciation, diction and idiomatic expressions are great. Sort of like like an American-English speaker meeting up with someone from Ireland for the first time. Great video Joe, youre pretty funny. good job.

I have never heard the mayor of Toronto or any other North Amercian city saying we are a Englsih city. In Milwaukee my hometown yes we speek English but I never would think of us as an English city we are an American city. Toronto is not an Englsih city Montreal is not a frech city they are Canadian cities.

    O.K., I'm a 38 years old Québecois, for 20 years I've lived in Montréal.
    1. Yeah, women here are quite amazing.
    2. That video was shot exclusively in the Old Port area. There are basically 3 kinds of people in Le Vieux Port : tourists, homeless people and people living in Montréal wanting to see the river.
    3. That Joe guy is obviously not a documentarist, he is kind of a not-so-funny comedian. Still, I enjoyed that video.
    4. When we Québecois say we are French doesn't mean we think of ourselves as Français from France. It's understood. So when we hear a US blockhead talking about the québecoise culture to make a few jokes, it's a bit like the N word. We say we are french. We get it, we use that word; you don't get it, you use it at your own risk.
4a. I firmly believe that people of all countries are welcome here in Montréal. Safest metropolis in America..
    5. Tabarnak is the most rude-intense swear word we got, so if you are not sure stick with : ostie, ciboire or the plain old fuck !
    6. At 2:40 the girl with the purple top says : Va donc chier. It means : Go take a shit ! She could have said : Va donc chier, mon ostie. But not : Va donc chier mon ostie de tabarnak. That would be too rude.
    7. About poutine : I like poutine, I had a cat named poutine. But to reduce our culture to poutine is like me saying : you americans are just a bunch of gunbearing warmongering bastards.
    8. We don't have that many beaches in Montréal.
    9. At the 6:00 mark the video gets more interesting and less cliched.
    10. We don't hate the Maple Leafs WE HATE THE BOSTON BRUINS !!!!!!!!

    • @Tarukeys
      @Tarukeys 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Colin Bell You have no idea of what you're talking about and clearly, you know nothing about its history. Only jews and blacks had it hard...yeah. North America was the stage of huge genocide of amerindians and it's barely mentionned anywhere. Quebec people are a moral and ethical force, you'll see, one day, at the ONU. If it wasn't for few clerics about 350 years ago, we would be extincts. Go read about Jeffery Amherst just for having a taste of what we endured. Just by our location, Quebec and Montreal should be the richest cities in North America but federalists and orangists are making damn sure it won't happen so they get all our money and ressources, milking us dry...and still being among the 24th richest nation in the world.
Medias are lying to you. Train yourself to see beyond it and be a free thinker. Have a great day.

1:43 " we are French " HELLO HELLO. you speak French but your not French, that is like an Australian saying his British as he talks English. if YOUR born in Canada YOUR CANADIAN, its like a person from Mexico saying there Spanish or an American saying there British as they talk English, if you can not live and work in France without a work permit etc THEN YOUR NOT FRENCH LOL even the French people in France lol dont see you as French lol PS love all the other Canadians but the French Canadians are just as bad as the French in France lol we are French but we've never been to France lol

Obviously there first language is NOT english so he doesn't express himself 100% like he'd like to. He was talking about the different language in Montreal and then said ''we're french'' making him know english is not his first language even though he was speaking it at the time. I get your point but you're taking this out of context, he meant ''we speak french''. I am québécois and I freaking hate when ignorant americans and others canadians call us french but they do all the time...

michaelkeeble1 Well, in Montreal there are english canadians and french canadians, so they are saying they're french to make that distinction. I usually go with anglo or franco, but I understand why they say it. They certainly have French heritage you know...

    • @mikorara
      @mikorara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well , those 2 guys at 1:43 are really French from France, trust me. Ive spent time in both France and Quebec and there is a difference in how a French French person pronounces English and in how a Canadian French person pronounces English. In my opinion the French accent from France is a lot more profound and easily detectable. A Canadian French person's accent when speaking English is a lot more subtle and refined but still audible but nevertheless not as strong due mainly to a life-long exposure to English from early childhood. As a matter of fact many of the Quebecois that I've met sound
just like any Anglophone from Ontario or any other English-speaking province. So in fact those two guys really told the truth that they were French.
