Link's Uncle heading out with a fully upgraded sword and shield amused me more than it should. I just imagine him succeeding and Link staying in bed the whole time, possibly dreaming about a whale at the top of a mountain.

When emulators came on the scene, this was what I spent years of my life doing - building save state editors in Java just to see how you could break the mechanics of the game. Was fun adding bosses to my OgreBattle army, glitched graphics and all :)

I used to always interpret Try4ce as Try Ace, just to piss him off. I once did this while we were all in Kentucky or one of those states they have down there and he put me in a stranglehold from behind, demanding I say "try force" instead. However I still had full access to not one, but BOTH of my arms. I took my right and swung it up, making contact with his face and releasing the stranglehold he had previously inflicted. With my left arm I tossed a few shurikens his way but alas, I missed since I'm right-handed and cannot aim very well with my left. He then entered a roundhouse kick and his right foot made abrupt and painful contact with my face, causing me to spin rapidly as I fell to the floor. I called him "Try Force" from then on.

To me, one of the most intriguing things to learn was why games likes Faxanadu for the NES had such ridiculously long passwords, as they basically stored all information and progress in those passwords

In Dune 2, the game checks your spending by not allowing your credits to cross 0. However, if you use a hex editor on the save file to set your credits to -1, the game will allow you to continue spending. So long as you stay below 0, it will never know to stop you from spending more.

They've been sitting in a box for years and I know for sure the pin reader in my NES needs replacing. My SNES is one of those poor super yellowed units, I'll try retrobrighting I suppose. New subscriber here and I'm really looking forward to your channel getting the attention it deserves!

LttP was the most fun that I've had with save editing by glitching through walls and world's, but I regularly edit saves for older Pokémon games in order to try out Pokémon that I wouldn't normally have access to in the beginning of the game (level appropriate). Really good times~

  • @MidnightMechanic
    @MidnightMechanic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The exact same thing happened to me when editing AlttP using a ROM editor, basically everything has to be in the right place in the beginning in order to progress. If you don't get the lamp early, you can't escape the castle unless you feel around in the dark. If Link's uncle's coordinate path has been changed when he leaves the house, the game will crash. You can put the mirror shield, golden sword, and red mail in early chests, just remember to leave one alone for the lamp.

I know what you mean though after you get her out of the castle you just avoid going to your house to proceed so you dont get soft locked or loop locked. Once you get the pendants and master sword, zelda is a perm member of your party and don't need to worry about her leaving as her callback orbleave command can never be done by that point.

Willow (NES) uses a lot of the same flag shorthands for events too. While it does have a bitfield for events that happen, many of the conversations and such are based on whether or not you have certain equipment.
In Faxanadu (NES), you can also create a password that gives you all the equipment you need to begin the game at the first town and run straight to the end boss (assuming you didn't take a wrong turn or die on the way). There are just enough inventory slots to support that.

My solution for that annoying game count on Zelda’s save screen is to use save states on the SD2SNES. I can just carry on where I left off and I don’t have to start back at Link’s House or the Dark World Temple when I resume either! Given all the rom hacks for Zelda 3 (I also call it Zelda 3 rather than A Link to the Past for some reason) I’m surprised no-one has made one to resume at the dungeon you saved in.

I had a Game Wizard for SNES. Game.Genie had limited options for creating your own codes; altering codes that someone else had made, basically.. But the Game Wizard had advanced RAM search and compare tools. I of course used it to experiment with Zelda 3. RAM editing of course, not the save game directly. Altering saved games was a matter of altering the game in RAM then saving. Where I spent in an ordinate amount of time is using it with Eye of the Beholder. I parked my party in front of the alcove that could be used to identify all the unknown items in the game that you could pick up normally. I then placed every single item in the game into my inventory using codes and identified each one of them. I also did searches to be able to alter the names of my characters including text not available in the game. Equip any character with anything including spells normally not available in game play such as Knock. Easily duplicate entire inventories of items. Which is very useful for acquiring ammunition such as arrows and slingable items. Later I purchased an AD&D bundle of DOS games that included Eye of the Beholder. I decided to try my hand at save game hacking and discovered the save game layout and content hex values was pretty darn close to the game RAM layout of SNES EOB. Rather than having to completely learn the save game format for DOS EOB, I pretty much had done all the work already.

After a playthrough of Seiken Densetsu 3 on SNES9x around 2005 and not having necessarily picked the optimal classes, I went on to dissect the save files to change them back to where I could upgrade class again. However, I found that I could freely mix and match the best possible spells and abilities from each elite class to my characters in any of their spell wheels. Each could cast upgraded haste, slow and a heals as well, with max stats to boot.
Even tried some monster abilities and some of them worked despite showing a question mark icon in the spell wheel. Most monster abilities glitched the animations in one way or another, while a couple wreaked havoc to the game code. One or two even harmed my own group, out of the ones I tested. If I remember correctly, some monster abilities were basically copies of player abilities but with 0 mana cost for convenience.

I love the message you uncovered by accident that I had completely missed. That the power to save Hyrule isn't in the master sword, or the items of power that you collect. That even with foresight and the wisdom to stop Aghanim, you would have been sent to the Dark World to die, foolishly. That the reason you succeeded was in the courage you had, to face the journey itself. That in your journey you would have met the key events and people in your life to succeed, and having a quick road to success, does not lead to victory. You can be changed, altered, and forever lose yourself in a dark world of your own making, if not for these experiences. They are a mirror to your true self, so that you aren't left wandering the dark without the strength to find your way.
This is why the first item acquired, is your uncle's Lantern.

This made me think of how in BS Zelda: Inishie no Sekiban Episode 4, Zelda would just follow you around everywhere like it was no big deal until you reached the top of Death Mountain, where she remains for the remainder of the episode.
Unfortunately it's not really related to save data editing, so it's otherwise not really relevant to this video.

My most "special" LTTP save game was one I kept before you get the flippers. I love to go to Zora just to see his fishy face, but you can't do that anymore once you get the flippers. So I kept a save file from before getting them, so any time I want to see his fishy face, I can just drop by.
On my copy of the GBA version, I kept a "save anywhere" save right at Zora files so I don't even have to work my way there.

The Fire Rod value must be some sort of bit shift. Did it overflow? Or perhaps they actually implemented a loop to shift the bits for the value of 2 as well because they originally planned to have that at some point, but further values have undefined behaviour?

It's actually kind of interesting that so much game logic is driven off the current sword ID in inventory. Zelda doesn't appear until you have sword=1, which makes some sense because they don't want you to proceed into the sewers if you somehow managed to skip Uncle. And the sanctuary events triggering on sword>1 is interesting (not sword=2, which is probably more accurate). I don't think that if you do Agahnim first and then return to sanctuary that the priest will still be there, so it's not like you can go there with tempered sword and see that event. Maybe I'm wrong though, I've probably never tried it.

Wait, someone else other than me cares about how the original release of A Link to the Past counts deaths, and that person happens to co-run one of my favorite TH-cam channels? That's awesome!
In truth I actually had an obsession when I was around 12 or 13 with trying to beat all Zelda games with death counters on them without dying, and I of course eventually fell onto LTTP. I actually got so pissed at the weird way saving and quitting counted as a death, so I straight up bought a copy of the GBA version which fixed this problem. Of course on that version there are additional sidequests that can only be done by playing Four Swords alongside it, so I had to buy an additional copy as well as a link cable. Unfortunately I never did 100% that no-death run as I could never find someone skilled enough who wanted to play Four Swords with me.

I've dwelled into Shadowrun on Sega editing. There was a comprehensive wiki page about it over on StrategyWiki, but it was lacking some things that I set out to mess around with. And while I was unable to figure out where the palette swap was handled on, after bouncing it over to a fellow TH-camr who also loves Shadowrun on Genesis ( Grimithr ), he was able to figure out where the code for palette swapping was. There's a lot of interesting stuff one can discover in that game, such as checking on enemy stats and what they're actually carrying, their class and so forth.

It still does that endless screen wrap if you approach the castle though. There's a path if you do that beat the game in 3 minutes glitch if you branch off toward the left there's a cave you can exit. The trick was to play the "digging game" many times until you get that streak of things being dug out, progressively increasing in value (rupees) and size (magic) then the heart pops out!

I recall hex editing Final Fantasy XIII save games on PS3 (exported to USB) because they weren't encrypted. Or maybe it was XIII-2; one of the two.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but I have seen old screenshots in old magazines of link with a 1/4th magic meter. I'm assuming this was planned at some point but removed before the final version of the game.

FFIV is a fun one to save edit. Spell books are just a list of spell IDs so you can give Meteo to Cecil, Edge and Rosa and the game will see no problem with that. Better yet, you can give spells that are not even meant to be used by party members (such as Mega Flare, Big Bang, Globe199, or FuSoYa/Golbez' W. Meteo, which is a Meteo with no MP cost and no cast time!) You can also put Porom back into your party, who happens to be so much better at black magic than Rydia that his Quake does more damage than her Bahamut!
Seiken Densetsu 3 is another one like that. You can slot any spell you want into a character's spell book, including spells not meant to be used by party members or L2/3 techniques, and have fun with it.

We have an acrade system at work that I maintain and a few months ago I migrated it from an old machine using Win7 and MAME to a new machine using Win10 and Launchbox along with a bunch of other fixes. Whilst I was doing this I had to carry over the old save games but the set that was most important was the high score values for Galaga because it's a game that most of us liked to play and the office kinda had a high score table going that we didn't want to lose.
Unfortunately there were some compatibility issues with the Save States (OG Galaga doesn't have SRAM for storing high scores) and I ended up having to manually modify some Save State data to get the high score table displaying what I needed it to. It took quite a bit of online digging and plain old trial and error, but eventually I was able to figure out where the game memory was stored in the save state and where the high scores were stored within the game's memory.
However it wasn't as simple as just modifying the score values no. It turns out that Galaga stores it's high scores as individual characters rather than a value number, so each number on the score is represented by a hexidecimal byte, but the bytes represented characters in what was effectively Galaga's own proprietary implementation of ACSII, and as the cherry ontop of the cake the numbers were stored in reverse order. It took quite a bit of figuring out, but in the end I was able to carry over the high score table over to the new machine.

you missed 1 very cool thing. let me explain a bit. the game has 3 phases, 1. the rain, 2. the normal world, 3. the dark world. if you use a portal to go to the dark world in the normal gameplay or use the mirror you switch between phase 2 and 3. if you are in the rain and than use a portal to the dark world, you are at phase 2 but with the dark world map. meaning you have the NPCs and enemys from the light world but you are in the dark world with the sprites realy messing up.
for you it didtn happen because you defeated aghanim what is the trigger for phase 3 even if you are in phase 1 of the game

Interesting episode. Didn't know just editing the save file could cause so many....issues! You've gotten my sub, great video.
I've seen speedruns and let's play on a combined Link to the Past/Super Metroid rom. Bur i'm interested in how that actually works. How does the combined game work and the collection of items from the other game work when swicthing between them? I'm guessing it's due to different hex values for each game being very different, but would love a detailed explanation how and why.
Are you intereted in covering that in a future video?

I have never edited save files before, but I have edited passwords. My favorite edit is to start Metroid without the power suit (as if I had beaten the game quickly) but with no items or other game progress.

A game very close to my heart. I could probably beat it 100% without dying in my sleep now if I wanted to. Anyways there is a certain "hack" out there that does some pretty ridiculous things with LTTP and it "breaks" the game flow in ways you wouldn't expect similar to what you're doing here.
Said hack is called the Zelda 3, Super Metroid randomizer. A marvel of coding that takes advantage of something rather interesting between SM and LTTP. The ROM for these games fits together like a pair of puzzle pieces so they can exist on the SAME cartridge. Specifically I think it's the JP versions of these games. I forget WHY this is the case, something about trade show demos, but because of this quirk the modding crowd was able to make something extraordinary.

The reason Zelda isn't there is due to the Master Sword flag. Once you have the Master Sword, the game assumes a certain amount of game progression & thus the game acts like she had already been rescued and is at the Sanctuary. If you could go to the Sanctuary after, she would likely already be there. That's my guess anyway.

Friend was really big into SSI RPG PC games. I found them kinda boring so I had more fun hacking save games and editing the crap out of the character sheets. My favorite was altering my attacks per turn to FF. I defeated an ancient red dragon at level 1 in the beginning of the game where I think you were supposed to be running in terror.

You can do this without a hex editor or Game Genie.
Just do the jump off ledges glitch in the beginning of the game. Navigate through the glitch dungeon until you get to the dark palace. Enter and exit the dark palace to get Zelda outside in the light world.
