Remembered this and had to go back and find it before turning mine next week. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. I've been watching you a long time pal. You were my primary teacher in those days. I had a Penn State Mini back then.
Thank you very much John!! Wow! This was a trip down memory lane :)
The Oregon Coast Woodturning club challenge for February is a rolling pin....what a great tutorial on how to.. Thanks Carl. Nine years ago - WoW
That's awesome! Man this was a longtime ago :)
I will try to get it done in the next month or so. I have a few projects out that I need to complete.
Thanks,
Carl
I will try work a little piece in on one of the videos.
Thanks,
Carl
Yes I think Poplar is a great choice. Use a food safe finish of your choice. I use salad bowl oil for my food safe finishes.
Thank you!
I have only used Nova chucks. I have heard good things about other brands as well like Grizzly.
Thanks,
Carl
Yes, there is a jig that I use with my grinder. I have a video up on my channel about sharpening that I think would answer your quetions the best.
Thanks,
Carl
@OuachitaOutdoorsMan It's a food safe finish. You can find it at most woodworking stores
Nice slab of wood.
@nicholls611 It may be the bevel or the way your holding it I'm not sure with out seeing it or watching you turn.
I would also be interested in a skew video. I notice you tend to use the skew going right to left and the gouge going from left to right.
Hey Carl, I'd like to turn one of these for my wife for our 5 year anniversary. 5th year is apparently wood, lucky for me hahaha. Is there a specific taper, or measurements or anything for these rolling pins? I saw that you used a 2" piece of wood and did the tapers about 3 1/2" from the end. Is that about standard, or is it just kind of a "turn it 'till it looks good" type of thing? Thanks a lot!
Braxton Wirthlin I'm not sure if there's a standard, I just turned it till it looked good :) I've seen some really nice segmented one too.
Thanks, Carl! I may end up doing a segmented one. I've got some cherry, and walnut scraps that would probably make a nice one. I'll probably end up shooting a video of it. I'll let you know when I get it done. It's awesome how much content you've got up here. In the back of my head when I was typing in turning a French rolling pin somehow I knew you'd have a video! Thanks for all the help!

Can you do a video on how to use the skew. I have been turning for about a year and a half now and I cant figure out how to use the skew. I usually just avoid the skew because when i use it i get terrible chatter or i get a catch
Hi Carl, I have a lot of difficulty getting my skew to cut if i hold it the way you do. Is it because the bevel isn't right or just isn't sharp enough? I started turning about 2 years ago and had to teach myself basically everything
how do you sharpen those tools? they look like not all of them are a straight blade. is there some kinda of jig? or special tool you use? or is it easier to get them sharpened by someone else?
can you tell me more about the salad bowl oil finish your using? thank you
what is a good brand of chuck thats not really expensive but still reliable
@haydenHD Thanks so much!! That would be super helpful!!
