  • Beyond Licola Part 1 - Tamboritha Road to Arbuckle Junction. History & Scenery.
    Part 1 of a three-part series. (Non-Commercial).
Featuring Wellington River, The Crinoline, Tali Karng, Dolodrook, Bennison Spur, Lost Plain & more.
Tamboritha Road is a 46-kilometre drive from the Macalister River to the Bennison High Plains; 22km bitumen, 24km rough gravel. There is no shortage of things to see, do or learn along this relatively short drive.
Prior to 1962, the area north-east of Licola was one of the least known areas in Victoria. Access was by horse or foot only. Some logging activity commenced in the Moroka area during the 1950s before Tamboritha Road gave tourists easier access to the high plains, mountain peaks, valleys, and gorges.
The area is still remote and road conditions can change dramatically with weather and heavy use. It is imperative to let someone know before you go venturing into this high-altitude wonderland.
Although I saw several non-4WD cars battling the rough, corrugated and rocky section of Tamboritha Road, 4WD is definitely recommended to minimise potential car maintenance issues.
This is the first in a series of three slideshows showcasing history and some scenic attractions of the area.
