      Hi Dr. Fung,
I had a gastric sleeve that I found out has a different shape as I had a hernia where they would normally attach it 9 years ago. Within a year the hunger was back . I eat a really good meal and within two hours in the morning I am starving and shaky, feeling like I am going to faint and nauseous. I am on duromine but do not take it everyday as I try very hard to manage my weight loss with fasting at dinner time. I have plateaued and I am walking. I have lost 13 kg. I was 90 kg and am now 77 kg.. I am 148 cm tall and 55 years old.
      Two questions.
1 I have 45 g albran flakes with overall 14g carbs. I have skim milk on this. No sugars at all. Is this an acceptable breakfast?
2 I do not mind the hunger. I fear the nausea, headache and bad shakes, especially at work. I am a teacher.
Do you know what I can do about this?
I know you are very busy so l will not be offended if you do not answer. I would be very grateful if you can. Thank you.

    Summary:
    What you eat:
    1. Avoid artificial sweeteners
    2. Diet - switch up what you’re eating
    When you don’t eat:
    3. Cleaner fast (water only, herbal tea, i.e. avoid products that may stimulate insulin response)
    4. Duration of Fast (this can mean extending fasting periods, or if used to longer fasts already, doing more shorter fasts instead; can always switch back to usual style once plateau is busted)
    Lower / Manage your Stress:
    5. Sleep Hygiene (inventory and fix sleep habits and try to get more + consistent sleep)
    6. Meditation (relaxing is an active process, and meditation is good one, Jason favors transcendental meditation )
    7. Exercise (not for weight loss directly but for lowering stress; Jason favors high intensity but most all forms can be beneficial, especially if you enjoy it)

Long duration, high intensity exercise is probably not the best. Especially if you are on keto. Long duration must be aerobic exercise, low intensity. Or if you do high intensity, then it should only last for a short duration. This is to avoid losing muscle mass in the process.

Extended fasting tends to make me anxious, but 15-18 hours does the trick for me. I have been doing this for 17 months, and just changing the time frame on occasion. I lost all the weight (60#) in the first 9 months and keeping it off is my goal at this point. I have a diet ginger ale and 2 coffees w/no sweetener every day. Other doctors claim it is a break for your brain and unless you are a sweet addict, it can’t hurt you, and may even help you get over the hump. Who knows? You have to find out what works for you. And then do it...

When I hit a plateau I did a 24 hour fast, then a bone broth vegetable soup, then another 12 hours. I called it my Superman fast because it got me to goal weight. I also found exercising in the fasted state, so taking a nice long walk during that first 24 hour fast, usually in the morning, was great. Sometimes I would do 2 long walks, 1 in the morning and 1 at lunch. I only fasted on days I didn’t work because I found not being stressed helped even more. When I hit my goal weight I prayed so hard that Jason would help others and that people would go back to fasting as part of their lifestyle.

I got on keto and lost weight easily for a few months, then I stalled.
So I went keto + OMAD, started losing again then stalled again.
Then I tried ketovore + OMAD + 1 or 2 48hr water fasts a month. I started losing again, and stalled again! For over 6 months!
Out of desperation I started tracking everything I ate and drank. Weighed and measured everything for 2 weeks. I didn't calculate calories or anything else but carbs (as I always did) because I didn't want to be influenced by anything as I gathered the data.
After 2 weeks I calculated calories, macros, etc and I was astonished! My % macros were good but I was eating less than 800 cal a day on my eating days! And since I hadn't really changed what and how much I ate since starting ketovore, that's what I had been eating for well over a year! Probably closer to 3 years since I didn't really increase anything when I switched from keto to ketovore either, I just cut out 90% of the vegetables.
I had absolutely wrecked my metabolism!!! 😭
    That was 2 months ago.
Still ketovore but now with a 2hr feeding window, and increasing my daily calories little by little. I started losing weight again as soon as I reliably ate 1200cal a day. I'm now at around 1300 and still losing.
Moral of my story, if you hit a long plateau, re-evaluate what you are doing and change things up one thing at a time. And make sure you are eating enough!

One of the ways of dealing with stress which works best for me is......fasting.
While fasting I don't have to pay any attention to what am I going to eat, when am I going to eat, shopping for food, preparing the food, cleaning up afterwards. I have more time to deal with whatever is causing the stress because I know my health and physical well being is in check for the time being.

      Agreed.
I cook for my husband most days, though, so I've had to learn to fast while still planning and preparing food. (My husband said he was OK with just getting takeout all the time, but I didn't want to disrupt his schedule too much--and I am concerned about maintining his health, as well [his weight is close to ideal]). But I did appreciate the offer from him.
Now I'm pretty good with this not affecting my own fasting.

But for the last 1 1/2 weeks I’ve been stuck at 209.9 lbs, although I feel thinner and my clothes are fitting loosely. My summer goal is to be 199 lbs in July and 189 lbs by October. And I think the reason why I’ve been stuck at 209.9 for almost two weeks is because for the last 3 weeks I’ve been working 6 days a week and not sleeping well, which has caused stress eating or binges. But I will take care of my stress and I will sleep more. Once again thank you for your advice, Dr Fung.

Hi. Relax your expectations of weight loss. Focus on the process of intermittent fasting while drinking non sweetened drinks, eating healthy 1 or 2 meals when you eat in your eating window, as Dr Fung describes. It’s not a race. You are already winning by using intermittent fasting as your tool to get healthy. Remember 1-2 pounds per week of continuous weight loss is excellent results. Focus on the positives of your journey: less pain, less strong cravings, control over hunger pangs that come and go but don’t own you, and more control over your life. All the best to you. 👍🏼😎🏆

Wow, this was so encouraging and informative.. thank you dr Fung. I actually finished my first ever 36, well 38hr fast this morning! I’ve been nervous of doing anything longer than OMAD because the dietitians/GP’s have always said I should eat every 2/3hrs, to prevent starvation mode (For 20+yrs I only ate around 900 Cals a day!)! I’ve also suffered with chronic stress and insomnia, while caring for my parents who came to live with me. The last 9yrs of their lives and end of life care was very traumatic and tough!! It added another 2st to my already 13st, obese frame, but I was also exhausted and totally depleted! While I haven’t lost anymore weight since last May doing IF, LCHF, I am sticking with your teachings and praying for a breakthrough. Thank you dr Jason.. for hope. LG

Dieticians and GPs don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Just take a look at the obesity rate in this country, all perpetrated by our ignorant medical profession and big food companies pushing their nonsense.

You can do this! We can do this together, never give up! I have been yo-yo dieting for the last decade, and ended up worse then before I started. So far I lost 9 lbs, still have another 13 lbs to go. Has been plateaus for 3 weeks now, and I think I know the reasons after watching this video. It was the sweeteners and the nuts.... cutting them out today. Doing my first 48 hrs today! Good luck to us all!

I love Chuck's philosophy, to "make hunger your friend." It's so true, when you haven't attempted a longer fast in a while and you feel hungry, at least I will feel a sense of panic or unease that I "feel" like I can't manage. BUT(!!!) it goes away, just give it 30 minutes and you feel just fine again. I'm trying to get back on track, doing 20-21 hour fasts just fine, need to up it to 36-40 and then shoot for a 72 here soon. It's been a while since a 5-11 day fast, but the 11 day fast I last had was a game changer. They not only change my body, my cravings, but my mind and my outlook on life. It's a great way to shift your path to the positive! Thanks sooooo much Dr. Fung, I'm so happy you have your own channel, been watching you for years! Wishing you the best!

Just so you know, the hunger does go away when you get used to fasting daily, I have been fasting daily for over 11 years now, mainly to keep my body composition these days.

I think that depends upon what you eat when you are not fasting.
Also, Some food types and/or your carb/protien/fat ratio has a lot to do with it also.

When I would have bouts of backpain from scoliosis & not be able to sleep I would put 1/4 tsp. of Inositol powder (Now Foods) in a glass of water or juice at bedtime. I found out I was magnesium deficient (before I went keto) and keeping that in order helps. It turns out magnesium glycinate can be optimal in that regard, though all help. I have also been taking aswagandha and stinging nettle root extract.
