Well its currently 18 degrees up here in NY and we are always looking for that dirt bike feeling! Thanks for watching the channel! Enjoy The Ride, Jared
@3SeasRecreation Don't worry pretty soon NY state will have prestine riding weather! Late April > late Oct. No snow really anymore these days in most areas. FL is a mess late spring > late summer.
Hi, I would like to ask, when my rr 390 2018, warms up sometimes (mostly during riding) the bike gets really weird idle, when in sounds like it is nearly stalling itself (its like hard ticking sound, similar to badly adjusted valves ), when I restart the bike it doesn´t do it, do you think it is a stepper motor issue ? When it could be dirty and doesn´t work properly or do you have any ideas ?
We love your content! I often start rides here in Colorado at 7,000' and go as high as 12,, even 13,000'. How do the Beta 4 strokes compensate for the decrease in oxygen at those elevations during a ride?
I have the same question. I live in St. Louis but ride in Colorado frequently. I just bought a 2024 Beta 500 RS. I hope that I haven’t just made a big mistake. May I ask what year and model bike you have? Does it run cleanly at high elevation?
Thanks for this video. My '23 350 rr, I only ride in the same spot. This has a persistent stalling issue typically at about 30 miles into a ride if I'm in low speed single track. First they found out of the crate the valves were very tight from the manufacturer. Adjusted. Same problem. Then the ECU had a recall. No fix. Then they replaced all sensors. No fix. The green plug on gas cap was removed before I took ownership. Beta cannot figure out this issue. I've owned it for 6 months and every ride has had this stalling problem EVEN with this starting method facilitated. Is this something common or.....??? I'm about to drop this off by the Titanic.
Good Morning, Beta just released a new EFI map (mid may) for all 2023 4-stroke motorcycles. You reallllly need to get that done, it has been a common issue this year with running issues especially hot starting. Also, there is a voluntary check on your voltage regulator plug. I would be willing to bet one of your pins in your voltage regulator is not seated correctly. Your dealer should have access to all of these service bulletins. Enjoy The Ride, Jared
Thanks from Germany Jared!! At my last three rides i have the idle problem, especially when the bike is like cold and warm after 5 Minuten of riding. My local dealer dont know this problem, and i hope that the bike is running better in the future, when i let the Beta warm up for 8 Minutes without driving..
Good Morning! Thanks for checking out our channel much appreciated! Have you tried a new battery? I would start with that. Secondly has the dealer reflashed the bike with the newest map available? How many hours are on the bike? We have heard of worn throttle bodies that will cause that issue and there is no fix other than to replace the throttle body.
I really like your videos!! I have a 2017 Inyection Beta 480RR When motorcycle is cold is really hard to start it, after that start really good. Do you think the stepper could be the problem?
Salve, complimenti per il video; voglio comprare una Beta rr 480 4t non per fare gare ma per un uso hobbistico tranquillo con amici. La manutenzione e la durata di questa moto è buona o è una moto molto delicata? grazie. Andrea
Very useful video, thanks! I recently got a 390 and am trying to learn as much as possible. I tend to let the bike warm up for about 10 mins anyway so that should have me covered it seems. One question on the stepper motor reset. Does it matter if you switch the bike off after it's reset itself or is it fine to ride on?
Hi. Thanks for the vids - they are awesome. I note that the engine temp needs to reach 95 degrees to reset the stepper motor. Do you know if there is a simple way to install a digital display to the cylinder head temp sensor so you can see when it reaches this temp? If not, I know there are a number of options to do this for water temp but is this the same as engine temp, or is it higher or lower then engine temp? Thanks
Good Morning! That is a good question, I don't have a fast solution for that. So that is why I took the time to film so you could watch my dealer screen that shows engine temp and that would give you a base line to shoot for. Most of the time you can physically hear the engine tone change if it actually needed to be done. When you hear that change in engine tone you know its complete! Enjoy The Ride, Jared
Hi, great educational video for Beta.! So in simple words, You mean when you start the cold bike up every time, let it warm up for a few minutes before start riding?
Even if you don't get all infos and the erase default codes possible, any BT dongle and a good software on your phone (like car scanner pro) will give you infos about engine temperature ;) . I found too that the 8 min is a good average value to get to the T° and complete the procedure . But I guess race map I'm running now has more ignition timing advance, as bike warms up far faster ;) Found too that lots of people become a bit obsessed by the stepmotor procedure. Doing it each time they use the bike, masking in fact other problems like bad valves play, some air leak in admission hoses, not recent spark plug, low voltage or bad charging ( as you mentionned ); etc... ... BIke well set up doesn't need often stepmotor procedure, even when changing elevation places. Secret is not to fast open the throtlle when you start riding, but be super smooth on it, let it gently warm up during begin of ride (and engine says thanks too ;) ) Correct me if I'm wrong, as I had a very short time using BST with the euro 5 last ECU version, but I saw that the excursion of step motor was possible from -20 to + 20 value now... I can be wrong... PS : JUst pluging ODB2 cable wakes up the bike and you can clearly listen to the step motor and fuel pump activation .. in total silence ;)
Hey Jared, nice Video. My Brand new 350 2023 with 3h on it. sometimes it starts realy bad if its dead cold. Today wanted to start the dead cold engine to do the reset, but i couldnt start it for about 4min. Seems there Was like no Choke. After that Desaster i had to twist the throttle a little bit to start the engine.... Do you think that could be the Stepper? Bike in perfect new condition. Dealer is informed. Maybe a remap could help? Thanks in advance.
Good Morning, I would certainly try to get the stepper motor to reset. Other things you should try is to fully charge the battery, I don't think most dealers fully charge the batteries before the bike leaves the dealer and the Beta fuel injected bikes HAVE to have a perfect battery. I think 4 minutes of trying to get it to start has def weakened the battery. Also, I would try a new spark plug... sometimes a new bike can need a plug from the light coating of oil they put on the engine internals to protect them during shipping. I have not yet seen an updated EFI map for the 2023s so I am not sure that is required. Enjoy the ride, Jared
I havea 2020 that even after warming up to 100 degrees I his the throttle and it chugs. I let of the throttle then it went back to idle. The bike finally ran fine after it hit the 211 and the fan came on. I believe is the stepper motor. What do you think?
Hey Good Evening! Thanks for the comment, I did this video in Celsius because that is what the computer reads and also what the procedure manual has it in.. For us here in the USA we are more familiar with Fahrenheit and that would need to be just above 200 *F like you found out. Thanks for watching, Jared
If you are riding at the same place multiple rides in a row you do not need to. I would just recommend doing it if you are going to change elevation for the weekend or if the temperatures are much different from the last ride. Thanks for the comment, Jared
Hi Jarred, a question regarding the battery voltage especially for MY23. What is the minimum voltage that the battery must supply to prevent the engine from poor idling? Do you have any experience values? I am looking into this on my RR390 and the limit seems to be 13.1V. If I make a restart below this voltage, this seems to lead to a rough engine running.
Good Morning, Beta actually has a service bulletin out on the 2023 RS models because the Voltage Regulator pins might not be crimped properly. I would recommend taking your bike into the dealer and ask them to check bulletin # SB-2023-3.. ALSO, I highly recommend you getting that 2023 in and getting it remapped. Beta sent out another bulletin explaining that every bike needs to be remapped. They all run extremely poor until that remap is done. New map came out mid May just for reference. Enjoy The Ride, Jared
Hi Jerrad, I took the steeper motor out on my 430 and cleaned it. After I reinstalled it, I fired it up and the idle was slower and dropped right back down after you rev it up. Happy me. Then I decided to reset the stepper motor. After eight minutes when it came up to temperature, I shut it off and then stated it back up after a few minutes. The bike is now idling much higher and it takes about five + seconds for the idle to drop back down. What happened? Do I need to take the motor back out and then not reset it after I put it back in? It does have a new battery. Took the stepper motor backout, wipe it off and put it back in. Took it for a ride, after a couple minutes the hanging idle started and it got worse as the ride went on. It got to the point where the idle would pull me along at 20mph, a little scary going down step trails lol. Time to replace it? Thanks
I tried to reset mine, but when i cold start it and dont give it any gas it will generally die after a few seconds. Restart and it will die again, until i give it some gas.
Thank you for your videos, it is a big help to learn about the Beta bikes after 6 years on Yamaha. I got 350 RE 2022 and I did the stepper motor setup as you showed, but still I got a problem that sometimes the rpm drop slow after I let of the throttle, any idea what can cause the problem? The bike run good at idle
Glad you like them and thanks for subscribing! I would still contribute the issue to that stepper motor, depending on how much time you have on your bike you may need to take it apart and clean it. I plan on doing a video of that here soon... Keep me in mind for future Beta parts orders, we can drop ship right to your door step from the Beta USA warehouse! Here are a few other things to check: Low battery/charging confusing the ECU. Dirty or worn throttle body. Stuck or bad stepper. Air leak. Glitch in the ECU map. No throttle cable slack or something causing tension. Binding throttle tube.
@@3SeasRecreation Thanks for the quick respond. The bike is brand new, about 8 hours. I did have a "check engine" fault code on my first ride (P0102), I checked and it seems something with the battery but never come back after I took of the headlight bulb (I thought maybe the fan is loading on the system because I am riding in a hot environment). I will check the other thing that you recommended!
a very stupid thing can be the throtlle cable without enough play, or a bit dirty. Even 1 mm still forcing opening when released can really put a mess on idling when throtlling off...
Does the stepper move while you're riding? I have an issue where the revs dip below normal idle for a moment after engine braking, as if the bypass is shut too long?
Good Evening, No I do not think it moves. It will reset when doing this process but I don't think it changes while riding. I would check your battery, as silly as that sounds those batteries have to be a perfect 12v on the 4-strokes to work properly. Enjoy the ride, Jared
Hey Jared, maybe you could help me understand something a bit better: in this particular video, you stated that because you are a dealer, you have that connector tool (I imagine a diagnostic plug-in). And in another video you had mentioned something about having the shop manual, again, because you’re a dealer. I’m a customer in the US (west coast-ish 2021 390 RR-S) and I have been looking around the web to see if I could find more literature than I already have in the way of technical manuals. I already have the owners manual, the “repair manual” (that only covers the engine) and a manual for the Sachs forks and I just cannot seem to find anything more for a deeper dive into all the things. Is the shop manual you’re referring to different than what I have, and I’d love to know more about whether this connector tool (and shop manual if different) are even available to anyone who is not a dealer? Thank you for all the sweet sweet Beta content!
Hey Good Afternoon, I only have access to the main manuals that you find under the dealer support tab. We do have a few other diagnostic guides that are provided to us dealers for when we encounter issues but that's about it. Nothing specific to any one bike. Thanks for watching!
If you need the throttle for a split second that will be ok. I would think after the stepper motor resets you wont have to do that. Enjoy The Ride, Jared
When the stepper motor is adjusting between 85-95°C can you feel it tapping if you put your fingers on it? If so does it stop tapping at 95 a signal that it's done resetting?
Good Afternoon, yes I would think that if you have your finger on it you might be able to feel it adjust. I think those temps are right on track for when I would expect it to start moving and also finalize. Enjoy the ride, Jared
Good Morning! Thanks for watching our video! I'm thinking you have already done the stepper motor reset as you see the video here. Next I would have your bike reflashed with the newest ECU map for your bike (They update maps periodically). Here are some other things to check: Hanging throttle / slow to return to idle. The most common causes for this are: Low battery/charging confusing the ECU. Failure to perform the stepper adaptation procedure. Dirty or worn throttle body. Stuck or bad stepper. Air leak. Glitch in the ECU map. No throttle cable slack or something causing tension. Binding throttle tube.
Thanks for the video Jared. The one ongoing problem I've had with my 2016 430 rr race is a hanging idle which seems to be getting worse. Does the stepper motor have any affect on that. or is the idle problem caused by something else? It's been remapped for the FMF exhaust system. I've been told installing the 2017 map is a good idea. Thanks
Thanks for watching! I would absolutely take your stepper motor out and clean it. Also, you could take it to a close desler and have them do that stepper motor test to see if it is even working. Maybe try a brand new battery, it could suprise you.
I had the same problem. Worn Thottle body and the throttle valve was hanging inside the body. Roughly said: I Removed it from the bike. Than I grinded down the worn spots, did a ECU reset and now its idling fine again. But I dont know how long it will fix the problem. Maybe I have to buy a new throttlebody in the future.
My bike is brand new and running like crap. It’s unridable. Idling super high and almost accelerates when letting off the gas. It’s a 22+ 390. First Beta and I’m wishing I hadn’t bought it. it literally has about 2 miles on it. I’ve tried the stepper reset with no luck. My dealer is far away and seems to be uneducated about most things BETA. Do you have any ideas you’d be willing to share?
Good Morning, sorry to hear that about your bike and I'm sure it's something simple. If the bike was here at the shop I would do multiple things on my computer such as reflash your ECU and do the stepper motor test and check for error codes. Here is the list that Beta USA gives us to check if a bike comes in with those symptoms. Obviously with yours being new I don't see the stepper motor being worn or dirty. Try and check these things: Low battery/charging confusing the ECU. Dirty or worn throttle body. Stuck or bad stepper. Air leak. No throttle cable slack or something causing tension. Binding throttle tube.
@@3SeasRecreation another thing which made my bike in hot summer backfire, run bad, idling high, etc...came from the hose admission collars in between body throtlle and engine . We are used to check the hoses bike cold, as exhaust is near, super hot and can burn hand. Hose being just near the exhaust , rubber becomes flexible and wieght of body throttle deforms it and makes some air leak. An other symptom of air leak on 4S Beta is too much sensitivity of spark plug cap, bike running super bad if not down to 0.5 to 0.6 mm
So basically, if we don't have the tool, just turn the cold bike on without touching the throttle and let the engine run for approximately 8 minutes until the engine temperature reaches 95 Celsius / 203 Fahrenheit. That will reset the stepper motor?
Good Evening, yep that exactly what you should do. Keep in mind that if it is colder outside it may take a little longer to reach that 95 degree celsius temp but I wanted to show people roughly what they should be aiming for! Thanks for watching our video, Jared
I would absolutely try this stepper motor process, you should actually consider doing this process anytime you go to a new place to ride. I would also load test your battery to make sure that it is 100%. We had a bike that we did everything to and all it ended up being was a dead battery... It would still start and "run" but never idle.. Thanks, Jared
@@3SeasRecreation A common failure is the harness cable going to the rec reg which is too tense : plug can be seen correctly connected but in fact you have bad contacts and charging is erratic. Using data log ( even with ordinary odb2 software like Car scanner pro which records real time multiple parmaters ) ,when running bike, makes diagnosis very easy... Starting bike with a weak battery will make the voltage drop to 8 or even 7 volts with the starter crancking and the ECU has no undervoltage shut off protection( like cars ) .PCM circuit of ECU will stil drive the sensors, fuel pump, etc.. It can end in a bad situation which can results in glitches in the ECU memory...
I have the same problem. If I start the bike cold, it will stall useless I give it a little throttle. I don't know if that affects the stepper motor reset.
@@brodybrown8923 I've found if you adjust the throttle cable so the bike will start and idle,,,,do the reset then readjust the throttle for 1-2 mm of play, all is good
Also to note (my bike came with a thermostat that kicked on my fan at 150* F): Unplugging the fan will allow the bike to hit 215*F which is when the stepper motor will lock in. It would never reach that temp if I didn't unplug my fan.
Hey Shawn, thanks for the comment. I just had to do some research but I found in the manuals that the OEM Beta fan is designed to kick on between 219 and 221 degrees Fahrenheit which is above the 203 degrees Fahrenheit (95 degrees celsius) that is required for the stepper motor to finish it's reset. Maybe you have installed a lower temp sensor or an aftermarket fan kit? Let me know, Jared
@@3SeasRecreation Yes....on my bike it has the lower temp sensor (installed by the previous owner). Can you please do a video about how to properly clean the Stepper motor? There is ZERO information on how to do this anywhere that I have looked and I am sure many people would benefit from that.
Trying to figure out my throttle/idle issue and I thought the stepper motor reset would do the trick. The RPM's hang a little bit before dropping back down to idle when I let off the throttle. Here is video footage of it: th-cam.com/video/Ozgl8M7zYuA/w-d-xo.html
Good Morning, I still think it is a stepper motor issue, have you tried taking it out and cleaning it? Other than that my suggestion would be to take the bike to a dealer with the service tool and they can test the stepper motor to make sure that it is even working (I did that in the video but it was hard to hear). Also, they could do a reset while the diagnostic tool is plugged in and they could watch the value change to make sure it is working. Hope it helps! Thanks, Jared

What if it won’t start without cracking the throttle. Is it still ok and it will go through the process?
If you need the throttle for a split second that will be ok. I would think after the stepper motor resets you wont have to do that. Enjoy The Ride, Jared
When the stepper motor is adjusting between 85-95°C can you feel it tapping if you put your fingers on it? If so does it stop tapping at 95 a signal that it's done resetting?
Good Afternoon, yes I would think that if you have your finger on it you might be able to feel it adjust. I think those temps are right on track for when I would expect it to start moving and also finalize. Enjoy the ride, Jared
2019 390 rr race edition. Is there a way to turn the idle down maybe 100-200rpm? Is there a program/map for that?
Good Morning! Thanks for watching our video! I'm thinking you have already done the stepper motor reset as you see the video here. Next I would have your bike reflashed with the newest ECU map for your bike (They update maps periodically). Here are some other things to check:
Hanging throttle / slow to return to idle. The most common causes for this are:
Low battery/charging confusing the ECU.
@@3SeasRecreation I'll take the motor out and clean it. Carb cleaner? Does have a new anti gravity battery. Thanks
Carb cleaner and an air tool should do the trick. Thanks, Jared
I had the same problem. Worn Thottle body and the throttle valve was hanging inside the body.
Roughly said:
I Removed it from the bike. Than I grinded down the worn spots, did a ECU reset and now its idling fine again.
But I dont know how long it will fix the problem. Maybe I have to buy a new throttlebody in the future.
@@mikegro8502 what wears out on the throttle body? What should I look for? Thanks
Try and check these things:
Low battery/charging confusing the ECU.
Dirty or worn throttle body.
Stuck or bad stepper.
Air leak.
No throttle cable slack or something causing tension.
Binding throttle tube.
What was the issue?
My bike shut off when i realese the accelator..doesn’t run in idle..is that stepper motor problem??
It can end in a bad situation which can results in glitches in the ECU memory...
what if a brand new 23 390rr doesn't want start without a small amount of throttle??
I have the same problem. If I start the bike cold, it will stall useless I give it a little throttle. I don't know if that affects the stepper motor reset.
@@brodybrown8923
I've found if you adjust the throttle cable so the bike will start and idle,,,,do the reset then readjust the throttle for 1-2 mm of play, all is good
I went back to a Beta 2 stroke because of the quirks of the Beta 4 stroke EFI.
Nothing wrong with a great running 2-stroke! Enjoy the ride, Jared
