      It's true that a short time video is good, but lots of important details were left out, watering the plant, sun or shade, away from other plants, pesticide attacks, when you pruned plants they suffer so you need to know what to do, it's not that simple.

      @@NC-qc7wd Because this is a pruning video, not an after-pruning care video. It is that simple.

    My late mother loved basil and she would have about thirty to forty pots of basil! She was born and raised in Greece where the basil plant is apart of our religion. We grow the “Greek” basil,the one with the small leaves! My father would cut a sprig of basil and wear it on his ear! Basil has been a part of my life since childhood. I love it! 🌿🍃🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷

    Hi Laura. My husband Phil and I watch your videos every week. We always watch for Russel to photo bomb you! Too Cute! When you answer your mail, I do think people get way to personal and ask questions that have nothing to do with gardening. But you have a sweet spirit and answer them anyway. We love you and wish you the best in developing your new plot of land.

    After watching your video, I went straight to my five-year-old basil plant. And yes, just like you said, it was very spindly with lots of flowers. I say "was" because I immediately pruned the poor old thing following your directions. Thanks for the basil-pruning video. It is informative - I didn't know one should prune basil - and easy to follow. And yes, I subscribed.

    I found basil does well with cucumber but it goes to see very fast if not picked basically everyday. My zone is great for growth, but that means much more care is needed. My pepper plants have 100’s on them. Best to spend a summer allowing them to grow and then flower. The wait is worth it, from zone 10b in California.

    Thanks dear, very helpful. Quick tip now, if you take that fresh bunch of basil you just harvested and put it in a glass of water it will stay fresh for months until you are using it, and if you can't use it all, it grows roots in the glass and you can plant it again in a new pot! Amazing plant! I use it in soups, salads, pesto, pizza etc...

    • @livinnparadise

      I was always told to prune by taking individual leaves (the biggest) and snip it off at the stem. I usually snip 5-10 leaves at a time. I’m wondering if this is ok for when you want to use it for an individual dish but do the full pruning 1x/week (I believe that’s what she said) for growth and health? I’m kind of confused.

    You did a great job in explaining how to prune basil! I grew a plant from seed and obviously didn't do it right because it just stopped producing leaves. I know now that I didn't let it mature long enough before I started taking leaves from it. I just grew a new one and now that I've seen your video, I know I'm going to have a big, lush plant in no time! Thanks again for the great instruction!

    Thanks! Two weeks ago, I bought a basil plant on a whim while shopping for tomatoes at a vegetable stand. (It was about the same price as the packaged herbs in the grocery store.) unknowingly, I was just picking leaves off it as I was preparing meals and it is not doing well. Now I know better. Right along with everyone else, I loved this video! You are so pleasant to watch. I wasn't actually looking for this, but I am so happy I watched. I LOVE having fresh basil on hand, however, I don't really know how to care for it. I am 65 and my family is down to my adult son and myself. I purchased a basil plant from a grocery store, didn't know anything about it (of course, it came with ZERO info and instructions), and it was dead within a few months! Well, I did learn a little today so maybe if I can ever find another plant, I'll give it a go! Thanks so much...

      Hello everyone. Since basil is found at every household in India, I would like to suggest ways to get a healthy growth of plant.
      1) add 20-25% old cowdung compost or vermi compost while preparing soil. Garden soil must be 40% and rest any kind of fine sand (either river or construction).
      2) add 1 TSP of Epsom salt every month after the plant grows to 1 feet height and develops strong roots.
      3) add few grains of DAP only once or twice a year (optional).
      4) cut the seed holders whenever you see them growing on its top.
      5) Water only when the top soil becomes dry, that too in 2-3 days. Though misting the leaves and stems helps in good growth.
      6) keep the plant whole day in the sun once the plant grows to suitable size.

    I really like LIME basil, it really has a great flavor. Cinnamon basil goes well in a salad, just clip a few leaves when trimming lettuce. About pruning pepper plants, I did that last year and drastic pruning forces the plant to bush out. Just topping the plant does not have the same results.

    Ack! Earlier today I was admiring the pretty basil blooms bc I’ve never seen them before (it’s my first time growing basil), but now I’ll have to snip them all off tomorrow! I might also taste them to see how the flavour changed lol. Thank you for the video, it was super helpful!!

    Thank you for the simple straight forward video. I have a basil plant from my gramma who passed away in June and was worried about it getting taller and taller and spindly. Now I can save it!

    Glad I watched this video. I always plant some basil, cut some when I need it and watch it grow crazy with little leaves. Nice to know that pruning keeps it healthy and the leave bigger and useful.

    • @stephenglotzbach788
      @stephenglotzbach788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you fertilizing it? You MIGHT be giving it too much nitrogen, if it's growing like crazy... Does it have a lot of flavor? If not, like I said, ya might wanna cut back on the nitrogen.

    Do you have a video on pruning Coriander?

    • @sugadaddy8009
      @sugadaddy8009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cant prune coriander. Thats a spice XD. Coriander is cilantro before sprouting, or cilantro seeds. NOt trying to be mean, i was just confused XD

    • @Isabella66Gracen
      @Isabella66Gracen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lynni M. Actually, all of the UK, Europe, Asia, and even Martha Stewart, always use the word corriander for cilantro.

    • @stephenglotzbach788
      @stephenglotzbach788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lynni is right, you can't prune coriander... but what you can do - start a new batch of seeds every few weeks. So, when one batch grows, flowers and turns to seed, you have another one ready and waiting to use as an herb.

  • @billrawle1

    Really simple really easy and I didn't realize you actually need to prune as well as harvest the leaves
    Thank you so very much

  • @jocelyn7733
    @jocelyn7733 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm confused what the difference between pruning and harvesting is and also when it flowers are you saying to cut the whole section and throw it away? Does it just "ruin" the flavor of those leaves directly around the flower? Or can you just pinch off the actual flower? Confused! Thanks!

    • @cutazabutton
      @cutazabutton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Best to not let it flower. If you do you can cut the stem pretty far down and throw that which you cut away. It won’t taste good. Since each stalk is a separate plant, it should not affect the other stalks, unless of course they have flowered too
      2. Harvesting is the same as pruning . You can take a little or a lot. Just try to sever the stem a bit above the leaves you will be leaving.

    • @adamgoodword7888
      @adamgoodword7888 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coriander aka Cilantro, I don't think pruning applies to this. You just keep harvesting each stalk of cilantro down to the roots.... I think.
      I've never had much luck with this plant.

    Thanks very much for a great video. I'm growing some Tukmania, which is a lovely sweet basil from Bangladesh. They eat the seeds and make really lovely soft drinks with it that has lots of health benefits. I bought a big bag of the seeds for culinary purposes and put some in a small pot next to my peppers and they have grown really well. Take care.🌞❤️🇬🇧
