When we pick a movie with Sho Kosugi called 9 Deaths of the Ninja, we expects of ninjas, fights, and general inasnity. Instead, we got a weird comedy/spoof of action movies with moments of hilarity.

I have a bizarre story related to this film. I had a friend whose grandfather was very ill(literally on his death bed) he called said friend into his room, and gestured everyone else to leave. He then said I have something I want to give you, he then reached over and gave him a VHS copy of 'nine deaths of the ninja' and then died. True story

In answer to your question Erin, he moved to LA when he was 19 and earned a degree in economics at CSULA. He got the acting bug, of course, and actually appears as a background extra in "Godfather II." He was hired by Cannon Films to do a series of Ninja films during the ninjitsu craze of the early 80's, and starred in a trilogy of ninja films for them--Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III: The Domination. He then appeared in a one-season prime-time show on NBC called The Master, starring Lee Van Cleef as a renegade ninja who traveled around in a van, A-Team style, helping others with his hotheaded pupil (Timothy Van Patten). Kosugi played the villain, and further established himself as the Ninja to call in Hollywood.

Funny thing is, Sho Kosugi was (is? I know he's still alive but have no idea if he still practices at his age) a legit martial artist, well-versed in many things including ninjutsu, Karate, Judo, and many others. I'm guessing the acting gigs paid the bills. My friends and I, growing up in the 80s, absolutely adored these cheesy ninja movies. I even wrote a cheesy ninja comic based on the silliness in these movies. It's hilarious to see your reactions because these were all exactly the same reactions we had back in the day, ha!

Dang, the guy that did that firework stunt is absolutely insane, as is the director.
Think of the amount of lawsuits and so on that would happen if you attempted that in a movie today...

I remember when this came out. Everybody hated this film.Like Jason us 80's kids were expecting epic Ninja action.
Because #1 the title of the film #2 Sho kosugi, and #3 the movie poster looked awsome.

This was shot in the Philippines. I wasn't sure at first, but then the shot of the guy being released from prison gave it away. I feel like they shot a lot of these B movies from the 80s over here whenever they needed an exotic location. Those little people assassins? Definitely friends of Weng Weng. 🤣

The guy that gets shot with the arrow at the end is also in a French-made movie called "The Perils of Gwendoline In The Land of the Yik Yak". A movie I consider SBIG because it's completely nonsensical and the beginning does not match up with the end at all. I don't want to give the end away, but it's a movie that literally has everything.
