    We watched this because of images floating around social media of a bad ass looking Mark Hamill. Little did we know Bill Paxton was the actual star of the movie. And that's the last of the joy you'll get out of this turkey. It goes from being a decent B-movie to an almost unwatchable borefest by the end.

    The star of this movie is really the Brookland Aerospace Optica 0A7. A neat idea for a very slow speed, high endurance aircraft that gave an unprecedented field of view for surveillance. They were marketed to police, fire departments, surveyors, etc. The people behind the Optica just couldn't get enough orders to stay in business. They had several starts and stops over the years and I'm pretty sure their most recent attempt to start building them again was only about a decade ago.

      Originally the company was Edgely. then they were Brooklands Aerospace around the time this film was made and when I did work experience at the factory and got my hands on one of the 2 planes used in the film (I think it was protoypes 1 and 3) by the time I was there 1 had no wings but 3 was still flyable. I saw it fly, too. And I also helpoed service the Hampshire Police one. Then the company got taken over by a Dutch company I believe.

They had a deal where you could rent 3 movies for $2 so I watched a lot of B movies and just grabbed whatever on impulse without paying much attention to who was in it. According to IMDB, this movie was produced by the great Gary Kurtz, who produced the Star Wars movies as well as other '70s and '80s classics like The Dark Crystal and American Graffiti. This movie bombed so badly that it sent him into bankruptcy and he never produced another big-budget movie again.

    • @josemuse4119
      @josemuse4119 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lucas had fired Gary Kurtz from Star Wars because he felt that Kurtz simply wasn't very good at his job and frequently mismanaged stuff and was bad at finances, causing Empire Strikes Back to fall behind schedule and over budget, which forced Lucas to beg Fox for more money. While Kurtz insisted that Lucas stopped caring about good stories and just wanted to sell toys, a look into Kurtz's films after The Dark Crystal kinda shows Lucas was the one telling the truth; Kurtz was doing such a bad job on Return to Oz that Disney fired him off the project before filming even started, he only retained an executive producer credit because his replacement felt sorry for him (and interestingly enough Lucas had to come in and save that film's director Walter Murch from being fired) and Slipstream more or less finished him off, aside from an obscure heist film starring Alfred Molina, Helen Shaver and Stephen Fry. Kurtz was also involved in the infamous Thief and the Cobbler and that's a massive story that's too long to tell here, but it's obvious he didn't do a good job there either.

    Good Call Jason, the Music Composer for this movie, Elmer Bernstein, did provide music for the original Ghostbusters score & soundtrack. That music has been used in the videogames, animated projects & even Ghostbusters Afterlife.
    Slipstream was a staple on HBO back in the day. It's a slow burn movie but i remember loving it on a Saturday afternoon.

    I never before in my life saw Mark Hamill and thought, "They could have gotten Brion James instead." But now here we are.....
    Too bad they suddenly dropped the whole Muldoon Jesus thing. The kite crucifixion is probably the most original adaptation l have seen. Kind of worth it to see Bill Paxton in a burger king hat dancing at a post apocolyptic fancy dress ball, though.

    I saw this movie as a kid when it first came out on video, so I have an odd soft spot for it. I appreciate anything that goes for something weird and unique, which this certainly was. I also have a feeling that this movie only exists because someone had access to those airplanes and said "we should make a movie about this." It's a shame there's never been a good transfer, as this would probably look pretty good remastered in widescreen, but who's gonna bother doing that? Whatever studio made this is probably long out of business and their film prints are lost forever.
