  • After buying my dream adventure vehicle, a fully electric 2022 Ford E-Transit Cargo van, it's time to attempt a solo install of a flexible solar panel/system.

Yeah, you're going to get some arcing when you connect your panels first. You could buy a battery disconnect switch and put that between the battery and controller. That won't arc in the open.

You did good for your first time.
Constructive criticism- Flexible panels tend to fail frequently and often. Presumably in your case as its on a hot metal surface that can reach 160deg or more especially with a black panel. the plastics and others tend to fail and short out or start fires etc. Normally they're glued down with a marine adhesive. But have fun getting them up when they fail. If you dip your finger in Mineral Spirits/Paint Thinner then dab on or smear caulk/adhesive you can make it look nice and smooth or shape it. Dipping every few seconds will keep it from sticking to your finger.
A circuit breaker on panels gives a convenient means of disconnect before making connections. Or cover panel then connect set controller correctly and then uncover. Add on like a 20A DC-DC charger for faster charging while driving. If that's a 1000w inverter it should have like 2ga wire. The included wires are frequently undersized and causes problems in heavier load operations. Like causing it to indicate low voltage and shut down.
Pretty sure thats a PWM charge controller if so it will likely kill your battery quickly. PWM work fine for Lead batteries. Lithium needs an MPPT controller. There's also a lot of cheap foreign controllers claiming to be MPPT but aren't. Price will basically tell you.The HQST M2440N 40A is a good option that can't be beat on price anywhere I've found. Also has Bluetooth for App monitoring and control as well as APP control for changing the boost charging to 10min or lowest possible as Lithium doesn't need it. Best value and option anywhere for $120 on Amazon.
If you need a phone a friend option I have an email address in my Channel video descriptions and make a comment so I see one/both.

Good afternoon, Mr. Motofy. It's such a pleasure to hear from you, and thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with me; your expertise is genuinely appreciated. It's so neat that you know so much about the different panels, controllers, and connections! Thank you for offering your email address; that was very sweet 🤩I hope you have a great week! Mandi

Hi Mandi.. Great video, and seriously massive kudos for successfully doing the installation and getting it to work.. Electrics are so intimidating.. The only criticism is that you should work out where you're putting everything on top of the van withoit fixing it in place and fit the wires to length on the top of the van, otherwise all that excess wire that you've taped down is gonna be flapping around when you're driving. The vent where the wires go into the van should be as close as possible to the connectors on the solar panel, leaving just a few centimètres of câble exposed to the wind so they won't move.. Well done though 👍👍

Hi, John! I am so happy to see you again! Thank you so much for the really kind message; you're the best! Thank you so much for your feedback on my creative handyman work 😀 The footage for this video was shot last summer; it's just taken me so long to edit - as it often does haha. The solar cables that came with the solar kit are quite long, and I wish that I would have known to explore maybe buying shorter cables way back when haha, but everything is all but super glued to the roof. So far, thankfully, there has been no cord movement in the past year, but I will keep all of the wisdom you shared in mind. Thank you for being so sweet! How are your time-off travels going? Is everything going great with you? 🤩

@@GoMandiMartin I'm good thanks.. So glad to hear the cables haven't moved. All is groovy here in France, no travel plans at the moment.. I'll take a couple of weeks off at the end of the summer, I'll be going surfing down to the South of France as usual in Hossegor.. I was intending on going to do the Lukla base camp trek this year, but I'm trying to buy a house in England at the moment so all money Is going towards that.. Always makes me happy to see your beautiful smile 😍

I remember taking one surfing lesson in Hawaii many years ago - and feeling like I could conquer the world when I was still standing/upright when I hit the shore haha! Ah, that's totally understandable about putting all your money towards your upcoming house purchase. How exciting! I really wanted a house and the van, but both costs about the same haha, so I had to choose. Aw, that is the nicest compliment! Thank you, John! I can't wait to hear more about your home buying and how your summer break turns out. 🤩

Ah yes, hiring someone does make sense for some, but I really wanted to learn, try, and grow, and oh my gosh - it feels so great to have figured it out! Actually, it's taken me quite a while to edit this one in the midst of my move and lots of other big changes., so that "upcoming" trip was actually the FL Keys road trip that will hopefully be out next 🤩 Thank you so much for being the first to leave a wonderful message on this video. @GoMandiMartin  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi! It's nice to hear from you 😃 I hope you are doing well. I have a fully electric van, so I definitely didn't want to risk interfering with my house battery or tapping into the electricity needed for my adventure vehicle to go out and be adventurous 😊 In this video, I hooked the flexible solar panel up to a 50 Amh battery to store the solar energy captured. I did, however, just purchase a much larger storage battery, and I'm eager to get that one hooked up. I really hope this helps, Mandi
