      The issue of how to hit without hurting/breaking our hands is very important and it is one part of the part of the wider topic of matching particular hand, fist, elbow or forearm surfaces to particular target surfaces at particular angles and distances. While hitting with the open hands can be very effective (I have been doing it for 40 years), it is typically only effective when the opponent is not moving relative to ourselves, and so by and large it can be very effective at the start of a fight as an initial entry or when dealing with a straight walk-up but not so effective not so effective when the fight moves to the chaotic movement stage.

    I was training Kali yesterday. This is basically exactly what we worked on, contacting the adversary with the first two knuckles in line with the bones of the forearm. We also practiced that exact overhand “corkscrew” punch, and we modified it to hit with the radius on the side of the neck. My instructor hit me with it on the left side of my neck at probably 5% power and jeez it rang my bell.

      I see some karate techniques here, the rotating of the fist and targeting the throat. I have trained in Shotokan and we were never taught to strike the throat till brown belt grade as it is very dangerous for the attacker and needs good control. This instructor is very good and reminds me of the teaching of Geoff Thompson and Peter Consterdine of the BCA, the British Combat Association, adapting Karate for the street.

    very good, 32 years traditional GoJuRyu karate training, this is how we hit, first 2 knuckles only.
    pushups on these knuckles on a hard floor strengthen the wrists and form the correct alignment of the wrists

    This reminded me of the old barehanded pancrase fights with bas ruten. The prohibited closed fists to the head so instead the landed the same overhand or big hook with the inside of the arm at the wrist. You guys should look those fights up they were a lot of fun to watch.

    I really like it and started training more power punches at the heavy bag instead of just boxing combinations. I think one big advantage of this overhand is, that you can still hit him good with the forearm, if he closes the distance.

    1:45 Leading with that left hand followed up with the rotated two knuckle punch is pretty much a standard in Japanese and Korean martial arts. You see it in the katas(forms) all the time.
    I did the same thing in bare knuckle matches a lot too, so I know from experience that you’re teaching the right thing.
    The only thing I have to add is that you need a LOT of repetition to make it automatic.
    I think thats why some of these commenters saying they broke their hand had that happen. Not putting in the time for the drills.
    Watching your video was enjoyable for two main reasons. First, it’s proof that the Japanese and Koreans knew what they were doing when they make these forms, and second, Chinese iron palm conditioning really does work.
    Breaking your knuckles or wrist is from not taking the time for proper training and conditioning. It’s as simple as that.

    just came across this channel.... good material had a question the technique that you are using to punch is it the same technique that is used in "systema"....I ask because not every guy can generate the power to knock someone out on the first punch.

    Hunt king do called it the rising tweak punch, executed from the unguard or unguard arms. the rising tweak punch is never executed in a haymaker. this tweak punch can be executed right close to the opponent body, an example, double striking with the same right arm, a close (body) right punch to executing a second punch with a tweak punch.

    That's how I was taught decades ago to punch in Tang Soo Do. If you have a laser straight punch with that twist and hit with the two knuckles it can do some serious damage.

      I started TKD training in 1973. Punching and conditioning of the fist was emphasized back then. When I took up boxing it was easy to transfer the concepts of bare handed punching. Pure western boxing offers much more than punching techniques though.

    Edit : your missing knuckle has convinced me to use the first two knuckles ! I took it upon myself to use the last 3 knuckles so to keep my wrist straight and be able to shoot punches without having to think about my final hand position. I can transport alot of power like that, i think it's ok with boxing gloves, but not with bare knuckles

    Regarding the knuckles Jack Dempsey would have disagreed with you , and he started out as a bare knuckle fighter .

      Cool story, but basic biology would disagree with Dempsey. The first two knuckles backed by the radial column is the strongest combination in structural integrity by far.

      @@russoprimera I respectfully disagree . When your pinkie lines up with your underarm your wrist is much more stable than when your index finger lines up with your underarm . Try doing push ups with your fists in both positions or try pushing a wall with your body in the straight left position ( the fist in a vertical position ) , as Dempsey recommended in his book . I found that the former was more stable than the latter . In my opinion boxers started to punch with the top two knuckles when taping was introduced , which changed the whole dynamics of impact on the wrists .

      @@carlox1266 The vast majority of boxer fractures occur to the bones on the pinky, followed by the ring finger. Look at any bouncer and the vast majority of them have damage to their pinky and ring finger knuckles from punching guys in the face. The wrist impact is way less of a factor compared to how badly you'll destroy the bones in your hand when you land with too much force on the ring & pinky fingers. This is proven through statistics on boxer fractures. Just because Dempsey said something doesn't mean it's automatically true, even though he had many great strategies and techniques. We know from medical statistics that index & middle finger are vastly less likely to break than pinky & ring finger from punching.

      @@Shacksies Like I said , the guy started out as a bare knuckle boxer , so he must know something about the subject . By the way , he did say that one should hit with all for knuckles . However I did not know that most boxer fractures are of the bottom two knuckles . As devil's advocate I would theorise that since most people are trained to hit with their top two knuckles breaking the bottom ones indicates that they missed with the top ones and landed with the bottoms ones without the wrist being in the right position to support them , thereby causing them to break . But , hey , what do I know , it was just something I read and played around with . The bouncer's that I used to know didn't have boxer's fractures .

    Our classical Okinawan karate punches like this - two knuckle, bones aligned for strength, power generates from the ground. Cool! We also teach that punching is not the most effective - broken bones etc., punching the head. If you punch, punch to the throat. Open hands are effective. Nice vids.

    Thank you for sharing the overhand for the street. The way it's taught in boxing and MMA involves the turning of your hand in a way that without gloves the small knuckles would clash with the skull. By not rotating as much you manage to "sacrifice the expendable". Thanks for sharing.

    Coach Erik Paulson would emphasize those two knuckles. Stand up and in a mma grappling context. Because of the potential to open a cut on your opponent, with those knuckles. (Eye socket,etc) I even use that outside the ring. Over hand right style punches with the two knuckles, while mounted…to set up a head and arm choke. (Drunk guy) Also, concerning hand injured injuries. I broke my hand as a young man, before I went into the army. For the next three years, if I punched something wrong, it would bother me. Good stuff brother. I’ve taught JKD, & Kali…train in bjj, Muay Thai, Silat and have had several mma coaches. Though the years I’ve condensed things down to it’s simplest, most direct principles. Those learned from street, mma & full contact stick fights. Experience is a great teacher. Keep passing the knowledge.

      I also like that you mentioned the cognitive thing. When your adrenaline is high, and you’re angry… or you’re scared, It could be chaos. But generally not the entire confrontation. But the more you pressure test techniques, the more you increase your ability to pull them off in a high stress scenario. I tell the guys, pressure test, or another word I use is adrenalize the technique.

    My middle hand bone was splitted, i got into a brawl in a disco cause of my chick... I knocked two of them and the third one i hit so hard at his front head then my hand was gone... I finished the fight with my weak and uncoordinated hand... 4 years later i have fear to punch with this hand... ❤

    Hello, and Happy Holidays. Thank you for this video, this is good, straight forward advice. I know most of the time you hear to never punch with your knuckles in the street, but I believe, as he stated, with the adrenalin pumping, you will go with what feels natural for most people.
    Something I was wondering while watching, and I'm not trying to be a dick, was why you don't train / teach in looser fitting clothing? You were adjusting your pants and t-shirt quite a bit, and it was a little distracting.

      it was in his book. he even covered an exercise to help you develop it. it would in doing a one handed press uf from a wall rather than the florr using the first two knuckles. doing so would help you istinclty keep that straight line all the way down from elbow to knuckles

      How can you have a dan? It’s not a martial arts. I think that’s one of the problems. Belts in Krav Maga. It’s not collection of techniques. I invite every black belt Krav Maga into my training location for a realistic stress test. And see how much of there black belt techniques come out. And by the way..there is good and bad Krav Maga. Same like there is good and bad combatives. I’m a Krav Maga instructor myself too. From the curriculum of Branimir Tudjan. No belts. Just boxing,wrestling and realistic disarming.

    Knuckles hitting someone’s mouth can result in knuckles being busted by teeth leading to nasty infections and tendon damage. Flat hand safest option in street fight.

    Sorry. Incorrect regarding the knuckle. The knuckle to land with is NOT the first two. To do this, you have to turn your fist slightly outwards, thus greatly risking a wrist injury. The knuckle that is the natural power-line, is actually the 4th knuckle, also known as the ring knuckle. Here, the wrist remains flat, without any twist to it.
    With your wide hook, turning your hand inwards, switches off the power-line, as it disengages the bicep. Alternatively, you can land using the mid-knuckles..or.. hamner fist.
    The jab was goid abd your absolutely correct to use it inorder to set up the backhand. You can greatly increse the speed of your attack by fainting that jab out to about 80%.

      I have to disagree here. I did a lot of bare knuckle fighting, and I used the front two knuckle classic Japanese straight punch a lot, and I was ok.

    Sorry but turning your hand all the way over like that is not a good idea, I did it once when not thinking about my technique and broke my hand. In the video example you show if you slow it down you don't turn your hand over like that you connect with your knuckles in a more vertical line. Its fine when hitting pads but if you connect with their cheekbone like I did you're gonna hurt yourself as much as them.

      Because you messed it up you think it’s not legit anymore? Maybe it was you? Did you not see mee connecting with a real head? You should hit with open hand anyway. I showed you reason with closed fist in the video.

      @user-ev9jk3bh1f that's the point this is not hitting correct, the reason to hit with the two knuckles he is showing in the video is so the bones in your hand line up with your arm so the shock doesn't break them. Breaking the bone in you hand that runs behind your little finger knuckle is a common boxers injury for this reason.

      I would say 80% cannot hit. All over Europe. It’s the commercial Krav that is so bad it’s painful. Of course there is very good Krav Maga too.

    Rotating isnt only unnecessary, itll actually hurt your knuckes way more easily. Come on dude. Bad advice. Guy looks like he can fight but i really wonder how many street fights hes even been in
    Im also not saying he wouldnt kick my ass in a street fight, he probably would (hes got at least 30-40lbs on me). Still bad advice though. And that overhand he throws will get your hand broken SO FAST. I know because ive done it several times. Youre reducing the surface area of the impact and youre GOING to break your shit. Im sure his knuckles are built up and strong enough to do this, but 99% of people dont have that. And in my case, once you start breaking that, it actually gets worse and worse over time plus it gets sensitive to the point of feeling pain with slight pressure. This is a BAD tutorial.
