  • M-CODE MONSTER-FULL RESULTS-1970 SMALL BLOCK HP CHAMP? Rated at just 300 (gross) hp, this little know 351 Cleveland actually made more power than (almost) any of the other Muscle Car small blocks up to 1970. Despite the mild cam, the Cleveland offered massive head flow not available from GM or Dodge. Only two other small blocks made more power, and both sported Cleveland heads.

In NHRA pro stock in the 70s and early 80s. The Clevelands were untouchable. In order to give the competition a chance, NHRA put weight brakes on pro stock cars. The Cleveland cars had to run way heavier than anyone else. Heavier than Chevy small blocks and big blocks. Even the Chrysler Hemi could run lighter.
Bob said he had to sand bag because NHRA kept adding weight to the Clevelands.
Bob's 1978 Fairmont is in the NHRA museum. It is the only pro stock car to NEVER lose a round of competition.

@shane: your logic makes no sense, In 1976 Bob ran a Chevrolet and in 1979 he ran a Dodge. Neither of these manufacturers were ever penalized. The ONLY time in history that they put weight brakes on Pro Stock was to penalize the Clevelands.

The Cleveland head is probably why Woo sprint car engines must run in line valve heads. It is also the reason all NASCAR Cup and Xfinity engines are now running canted valve heads. You can thank Robert Yates for making the Ford Cleveland heads the most dominant heads in NASCAR and forcing the competition to make their own canted valve head.

    • @andyharman3022
      @andyharman3022 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Chevy released the big block Chevy in 1965 that had canted valve heads. The Cleveland came out in 1969. Who is copying whom?

    • @RSDX99
      @RSDX99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@andyharman3022 No argument there and the reason Ford came out with the Cleveland head is because Ford brought over GM engineers to Ford and the Canted valve heads found their way to the sb Ford. The reason Chevy did not go with canted valves in their sb is because thousands of GM racers and vendors have invested many millions in the Chevy sb. The RO NASCAR Chevy engine finally brought canted valves to GM's lineup and they still use some version of that today. You can't argue that the canted valve engine is not a better high speed racing engine but the sanctioning bodies will not allow a better engine to compete against the original sb Chevy design. Too much money invested. Many will argue that the LS is the latest and greatest engine from GM but that engine is a Y block with cross bolted mains just like the Ford Fe engines from the early 60's so who is copying who?

Since they're often ahead of their time, and those other 2 always whine and get them banned from everything, which kills aftermarket support. And it's easy to throw tons of crap out there, when you don't have to do ALL the r&d...does the c8 remind you of anything? First one I saw, thought it was this car for like a minute.

we were lucky enough to get the Cleveland here in Australia. they came in a wide variety of specs and configurations. bottom end of the series was a low compression 302 with open chamber 2v heads. at the top end we got the legendary (well in Australia at least) GTHO motors. these were 351 with high comp 4v heads an alloy intake manifold and a 780 cfm Holley. 4 bolt mains, 4ma-b crank and very aggressive cams. ford Australia had the Holley, the cam and many other bits made especially to their specs. they ran custom a custom sump, and extractors. ford rated them at 320 hp but where closer to 400 - 420 hp. usually mated to the good old indestructible top loader and a 9" diff. in 1971 ford went bonkers and built the Falcon 351 GTHO Phase 3, at the time it was the fastest and quickest 4 door sedan in the world and now are so rare that originals in good condition go as high as $1 million AUD ( so about $80 USD. lol). the race teams would pick them up from the dealership and drive them to Bathurst to run them in! then win first, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in a 500 mile race. it was 1300kg and 400 hp on old school rubber and suspension so they were a handful to say the least.

That M code was indeed a beast. Not even listed as a high perf version from Ford. I had 3 sets of these heads and a complete M code from a totaled 70 Mach 1. 300 hp rated lol. Long tubes really make a Diff on these as the stock exhaust ports were average with cast iron manifolds. If you machined the heads for screw in studs and guideplates(basicly making it a Boss 351 head) you could run a real cam in these with a single plane intake. Then you would see the real power potential when you can run it to 7000+ rpm.

I got to help my dad with his drag race 351C in mid 70’s. We were running a Boss 351 engine with 12.5:1 pistons, Comp Cams solid lifter cam, tunnel ram intake with a pair of 660 Holleys with center squirters . 1 7/8 long tube headers. We were able to run up to Detroit and scrounge some “good” pieces from Gapp & Roush race shop like light weight valves and needle bearing fulcrum for the old stamped rocker arms. This was in a 65 Mustang ( car was Bob Corn’s “Cobra II” former Winternationals winner) with 4 speed.
I remember he was turning 8,500 rpm with it and running low 11 second times with the tires of the day.

I had an H-code in a 71 Cougar. The only things I did were no name dual exhaust and no name open element air cleaner with BBC paper element. I think I also had to rebuild the factory 2V carb. It was by no means a “muscle” car, but even the 2V heads on pump gas would pull higher-than-healthy RPMs (and power) with simple breathing enhancement. I’ve read a lot of articles and more recently watched quite a few videos on building SBFs for HP. I have concluded that many of the “journalists” were biased to start. I’ve never driven a 4V 351C, but might have to make it part of my bucket list to build one and something to put it in. Great video!

If anyone cares, the flowbench numbers Richard is talking about should raise a few eyebrows. The Cleveland head is flowing more air than a stock LS1 that would come 30 years later. The LS1 achieved it's numbers with smaller valves but it also had the benefit of decades more experience and technology. The Cleveland is an impressive beast.

Have a 74 Gran Torino Sport with a 351c with 2 bbl heads and installed Edelbrock 4 bbl intake with an Edelbrock 650, tried to match my 74 Torino I had in 78 in High school. Man, seeing all of these old school muscle car stories and comments really makes me miss my old 74 Camaro with a 400 that I put a Edelbrock dual tunnel ram with two Holley 750 double pumpers up top and velocity stacks out the hood, a Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher 4 speed, 4.11 rear end, and 19" Mickey Thompson drag radials. That thing would stand up on the rear wheels. I called it Fatal Attraction. I had it air brushed onto the rear panel along with the old school Chevy block and the Heartbeat of America. I have always wanted to build a 67 Camaro SS with a high compression DZ302, or an all original 70 Boss 302 both with a 4 speed of course, and make those legendary small blocks outperform big blocks. Man, if I wasn't stuck with a high horsepower, high dollar value Honda that I could NEVER sell for what I have into it, I'd go after that dream.

I ran a flow bench back in the 90s at a shop (we were making something else for Fords mainly but flowed some heads here and there) we saw a set of cleaned up 2v heads that killed all the Trick Flow, Dart, GT40 etc... and after seeing the Windsor 351 eat up bearings (at consistent high rpm usage) because the crank has too large a journal diameter I couldn't understand why the Windsor not the Cleveland was produced so much more.

    • @thoriated

The design criteria behind the Cleveland was a mass produced engine that could make 500 hp at 7000 rpm when prepped for NASCAR. The rule changes favored smaller engines, and Ford didn't want to make a special engine like the Tunnel Port 427 or Boss 429 engine anymore.

Over 25 years ago when I first started to get into technical specs of engines, I noticed the 351C appeared to really stand out and I was always baffled by the fact it wasn't more popular and the horsepower rating didn't seem to reflect the advantages. It wasn’t more popular in the US only because it wasn’t around very long in the US. Ford dumped the Cleveland engine after 1974 (in the US) in favor of the more truck based 351 Windsor. Ford only used the Cleveland in the US from 1970 to 1974.

The "M" code for this engine meant "Michigan Casting Center" as seen in the block cast stamp on the rear block near the oil pressure gauge take-off. The increased demand for the magic "351 ci" displacement at the time (1972) required Ford step up production using it's Detroit facility. The 351M was meant as a supplement to the 351C, modified from a 400ci engine using the taller block and rods, and a lowered pin location to fit the 351M piston design. And of course, a Windsor crank.
Incidentally, the 351-400M engine design as it was referred to was a strong engine, with minor oil delivery problems to the mains. But with minimal oiling mods the 400M gave outstanding low range torque, perfect for 4x4's of the time. Especially with the no-extra-work-needed massive 2.05 intakes and cut to fit intake tunnels requiring little head work for proper mating. A strong and highly under rated engine built for low end torque. A real brute. Leaving the 351Mto fade into obscurity.

i had one of these 1970 M-codes in a 1969 mustang for awhile. bone stock with a small holley it was quite strong. a friend had one in a '70 mach 1 stock except for 750 holley dp, mild hyd cam, long tubes, electric water pump, C6 trans, mild converter, shift kit, junkyard 4.11 chunk and slicks. ran 13.07 @ 107 mph at the Bracket Nationals in gainsville, fla in circa 1979. not fast by today's standards, but at the time it was respectively strong.

Hey Richard, the methods you employ for testing are the best around. The “before” test is done as close to OEM specifications as the current availability of stock parts will allow. The modified test uses a well balanced combination of parts that are readily available to anyone wanting to duplicate your results. You obviously realize that bigger isn’t necessarily better when selecting induction and cam components for practical builds. Unfortunately there are millions of clueless online builders that still don’t have a clue.
It’s a welcome change to see something other than all Chevy ALL THE TIME. Especially in the selection of a “M” code Cleveland. I’ve had possession of my 1970 M code Mach 1 for 37 great years. I don’t even try to explain what a M code is to the guys with a brand X mentality. As they watch my concours correct tail light bezels disappear into the night, they get the message loud and clear. The first clue should have been the Ram Air Shaker Scoop shaking excessively to the tune of a radical solid roller cam. 😉🏁
You’re doing a helluva job Richard. I sincerely appreciate it. And the beat goes on....

Back in the day I had heard that the Cleveland had really big ports and I was told that they were to big to have good throttle response on the turns but I never seen a down side from good cylinder heads . My experience was you can run smaller cam and still make good power . I build a 302 back in the day lol with a set of heads that was used in the car that set the record in G Gas and my motor although did not make that kind of power was every bit as good as expected and that showed me that money on a NA motor cylinder heads is on very important part. After watching Richard I now believe a turbo motor is a great way to make power.

no arguement on this end about 351C potential. A neighbor purloined 1 from his new Ranchero. Then built it to 400 hp level with parts spected in a FOMOCO 'Power Manual' available at the time. Then stuffed it into fairly new looking 65, 289 4spd Fastback Mustang. Ya, the shock towers had to be cut down , etc. I went on many ride alongs as he destroyed and fixed the rest of the driveline one by one. Top Loader replaced the broken OE 4spd. Then a stronger driveshaft replaced the pretzeled one. Broken teeth forced a 9in locker to replace the 8in OE axle. He named his 1st son Zebulon Mustang in tribute. And still has the car today.
While stock cars with this motor were lackluster on roadtests after repairs I'd made as a dealer Tech , 429 T-birds were veritable rockets in comparison. Probably a better match of Hi Flo heads to displacement. As Prof H's mastery of the Combo shows us in this vid pulling 450+ hp basicly from a cam change.
I've read the Ausie 351c block eliminated the 7-8k rpm cracking domestic castings occasionally suffered.

I have a stock 71' 351C 2V with a four speed on the floor dropped into a 1953 F-100 P.U. Truck. I suspect one of the previous owners was drag racing with the truck, because getting out of 1st gear the clutch shattered really bad, unless you feathered the clutch peddle just right. That engine gets that Truck across the 1/4 mile pretty quick. Fun but crazy, with a bad clutch, worn out 60's for tires, 1953 standard steering with 6 inches of play in the steering wheel in both directions and standard brakes. I have since replaced the clutch, the king pins and put some 70's on the front for tires. Now to do something with the steering for safer driving. I'm lucky I didn't kill myself with that engine and Truck when I was 20 years old.

And just think about different headers?
O'brien truckers make a truckers series piping which use a larger i.d. tubing from the exhaust port about 6" down transitioning to the original dia. Tube
    For example 2" down to 1 7/8 ".
Used with fact. Cleve 4 bbl. Heads, you could add a greater vacuum outbound
Greater scavening with a large overlap cam could add better horse pressure.
That's a tip for Richard to think about.
