      Actually they did not because it came too late, so it never got to see the pinnacle of what it could have been. Ford was planning the 4V version to make 500HP…. But then the gas crisis hit and the production motor ended up being crippled heavily.

      My combo is a zero decked 20 over 2v 351. I did light pocket work behind the valves and port matched the intake. I used an RPM intake and 1 3/4 headers. I also used the Pertronix with a recurve kit to bring timing in a bit earlier. My cam is the 265DEH grind from Comp. It runs like a scalded ape. Sounds great through chambered mufflers. Probably was a built 429 SCJ in the Torino ! Back then guys would claim they had the smaller engine so they could win $$$$ and /or brag that their brands small engine blew away the bigger engine !
      Just like other non racing guys Guys would brag they had a 454 in their Chevelle when they had a 307 or a 460 in their Mustang when it had a 300 6 cyl !!
      I knew a Guy with a 427 Chevelle,changed the badging to read 327 and people said man those 327's move !! My other buddy had a 1970 440 Cuda,changed the sticker from a 4 to a 3 and that was one fast 340 !! Ford guys did it too...They all seemed to have 302's when you asked them to race and what engines in the car,and they had cammed 390's,428's,429's and 460's built right up !!
      ..Best one was a Buddy had a pale blue 72 Challenger with a built 426 Hemi race cam had over 860 hp and he had the flat hood,Chrysler Imperial long huge mufflers that made the car very quiet ,really a new modern car would be noisy beside that car..He said to everyone it had a 318 that was running rough,well after 3 weekends at different locations his cover was blown lol....He even painted 318 on the hood and 1/4 panel lol..Once his cover was blown,he painted the car black,added a T/A hood ,RT exhaust valance out back with Hooker headers but kept the Imperial Mufflers it sounded mean but at a low-medium level,it really had a killer sound !

      @Rod Roberts, THE 351 CLEVELAND ATE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY'S UP ALIVE. A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WAS NO COMPETITION FOR A CLEVELAND. THE CHRYSLER SMALL BLOCK BY DESIGN WAS A BETTER ENGINE THAN THE CHEVY SMALL BLOCK AND IT ALSO WAS NO COMPETITION FOR THE 351 CLEVELAND NEITHER. THE CLEVELAND DESTROYED BOTH OF THEM AND EVERYTHING THAT CAME UP AGAINST IT. THIS MOTOR SHAPED DRAG RACING AS WE KNOW IT TODAY.

    Healthy sounding Cleveland.. Anyone that really knows anything of the Cleveland weather it be a Boss, Cobra Jet or plain Jane 2v config ? knows the crank in any of these configurations is nodular grind and can withstand max 7000 rpm. that being said all Cleveland heads are canted or angle valve geometry... minimum 2 inch intake valves.. With the Cleveland's particular valve/timing setup any stupid mistake like a bad distributor, crossed up timing or bad carb? one could roll/round out the cam lobes in a NY Heartbeat.. or damage the engine beyond repair.. as far as the oil leak most likely the rear main seal was damaged during crank mounting/torqueing.. I know I built many these.. mine were, one for the street in my Mustang was a Australian 2v Closed chamber setup knocking 460 hp, the other in my 73 Torino S&H, 4v American Boss config 40 over 357 knocking nearly 600 HP race gas..

      My Torino had a 351 Windsor, which sang sweetly at 5500 RPM, and a local guy had reworked it with a police pursuit transmission. I never heard it sing until I was cruising 140 taking my mother to the hospital. After that, I knew what I had. I thought about doing a B&B, but I was afraid the added confidence would be dangerous to my health and that of my neighbors, so I didn't do it. I regret selling the car when I was broke, but the guy that got it was a street-rodder and gave me $8k. Not bad for my $3k investment.
      I miss it, and I still hear it singing in my dreams.

    Boy this takes me back. What a great find on TH-cam. in 76 at 19 years old, I bought a 1970 Mach One 351 CV4 with an FMX auto trans and 9 inch rear end. Trashed the FMX and put in a built C6 with 3500 stall speed converter. Took the motor to the local machine shop and a copy of a Hot Rod Street build for the motor with HP output at around 425+. Cam high rise 750 cfm holly headers ported and polished the heads etc. Added 4.11 posi gears for the track, freshly updated brakes, coil over and traction bars. Wish I could have put it on a dyno but ran out of funds. Took it to Woodburn Drag Strip where the first pass was 11.60 smoking the tires most of the way. Needed slicks badly. Didn't get another pass that day as it blew the rear main seal. Common problem on this motor. Boy I loved that motor, it pulled so hard and sounded so good, pulled harder than my friends built 455 GTO or 440 GTX. Didn't lose a single street race the two years I owned it. Never got back to the track with it. The Clevland engine was developed at the height of the muscle car era and Ford, along with GM and Chrysler, were fudging hp numbers to beat the insurance companies. The NHRA knew this and classified cars in stock and super stock according to real world hp numbers. Not to surprising that a 351C with 4V heads and a slightly bigger cam made 352 hp.

    Here in Australia the 351C was THE engine for the ford brigade. Made famous here in Ford Australia's XY Falcon GTHO Phase 3. The hero car for the early 70's. They sell for over half a million with perfect examples going for almost One Million. Claimed output was around 380 bhp with a top speed of 140mph. The 351 was a brilliant engine, Aussie's never really took to the big blocks, perhaps because they just weren't an option for us here. A Ford American exec looking after Ford Aus (Bill Bourke) did have a big block shoe horned into an XW falcon back in the day though. It can be googled, along with the XY GTHO

    If you really care about your engine and you use a flat tappet cam, start the engine with soft valve springs. Then switch them back. Don't take short cuts.
    Its hard to explain but if you are any good at being a mechanic, hang the#1 plug out on side of block well grounded put your finger near spark plug hole. Turn engine over, don't pump the gas' and notice when spark and compression happens. If you are good you know when you are close. Replace plug. Pump gas sparingly.
    This is simplified but if you are good, you can always start an engine quick and easy this way. I have done this hundreds of times.

    • @Frank289100
      @Frank289100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @7s29, AND THE CLEVELAND STILL LIVES.
      THE 351 CLEVELAND TOTALLY AND SINGLE HANDEDLY CHANGED THE FACE OF PROSTOCK DRAG RACING FOREVER. THE 351 CLEVELAND DOMINATED PROSTOCK TO THE POINT WHERE THEY MADE THE FORD'S CARRY 250LBS MORE WEIGHT AND THEY STILL WON. THE NHRA THEN LET THE CHEVY'S/CHRYSLER/ETC REMOVE MORE WEIGHT AND THE FORD'S ONCE AGAIN STILL WON. THE EMINANT DOOM OF THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WAS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER AND THE NIGHTMARE GM FEARED WOULD SOON BECOME A REALITY OF PROSTOCK BEING TOTALLY POWERED BY THE 351 CLEVELAND MOTORS. THEN IN 1983 THE NHRA (ANOTHER DIVISION OF GM) HAD THEIR HENCHMEN IN THE NHRA MANDATED THE 500ci RULE AS A PLOY TO STOP FORD FROM DOMINATING PROSTOCK ANYMORE. SO THE NHRA ALLOWS GM ALONG WITH WARREN JOHNSON TO BUILD A NEW ENGINE CALLED "THE DRCE - DRAG RACE COMPETITION ENGINE". SO GM TAKES THE OLDSMOBILE BLOCK AND STUFFS IT LIKE A THANKSGIVING DAY TURKEY WITH A CAM AND ROTATING ASSEMBLY FROM A BIG BLOCK CHEVY AND THEN WARREN JOHNSON HAS A BIG PAIR OF FORD CLEVELAND HEADS MADE FOR IT. SO SINCE 1983 TO PRESENT WHAT CHEVY HAS BEEN WINNING WITH IS A FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. THIS IS THE REASON FORD DOESN'T GET INVOLVED IN PROSTOCK RACING. BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY FORD POWERED. AT THIS POINT BOB GLIDDEN GOES OUT AND GETS HIMSELF A BOSS 429 ENGINE AND SLAUGHTERS ALL OF THEM. EVERY YEAR AS GM/CHEVY GOT FASTER WITH THERE GENERIC FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. BOB GLIDDEN WOULD SLIGHTLY PORT THE BOSS HEADS KEEPING HIMSELF AHEAD OF THE CHEVY'S AND THE REST OF THEM INCLUDING THE HEMI'S. IT REACHED THE POINT WHERE FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN WERE GETTING READY TO CAST A NEW FORD BOSS HEAD AND MOST LIKELY THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN NAMED "THE SUPER BOSS HEADS". AT THIS POINT THE CHEATERS THE NHRA TO PUT CHEVY AND KEEP CHEVY IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE TOLD FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN THAT THEY HAD TO MAKE A 1000 PAIRS OF THESE HEADS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC IF THEY WANTED TO RACE. THE NHRA KNEW THE BOSS MOTORS WERE MADE IN LIMITED NUMBERS AND A MARKET FOR THESE HEADS DIDN'T EXIST. OBVIOUSLY THEY KNEW FORD WASN'T GOING TO SPEND COUNTLESS MILLIONS TO PRODUCE HEADS FOR A MOTOR THAT NO LONGER EXISTED. FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN THEN TOLD THE NHRA TO GO "F" THEMSELVES. THIS IS HOW FORD'S DOMINANCE IN PROSTOCK CAME TO AN END. IN 1980 BOB GLIDDEN DID SWITCH OVER TO CHRYSLER AND WON BEATING THE FORD'S ONLY FOR ONE REASON. LIKE THE CHEVY'S THE CHRYSLERS ALSO BENEFITTED FROM THE WEIGHT BREAK OF NOT HAVING TO CARRY 250 MORE POUNDS AND ALSO THE NHRA ALLOWING THEM TO TAKE OFF EVEN MORE WEIGHT ON TOP OF THE WEIGHT FORD WAS CARRING. THE FORD CLEVELAND MOTOR WAS THE ULTIMATE IN POLY ANGLE HEAD DESIGN. IT IS SO STATE OF THE ART THAT DOEN'T GEY ANY BETTER. IT IS HARD TO IMPROVE ON IT INITIAL DESIGN. TODAY YOUR SYMMETRICAL RACE MOTORS LABEDED AS CHEVY ARE ACTUALLY FORD CLEVELAND DESIGNS. YOUR MOUNTAIN MOTORS LABELED AS CHEVY ARE FORD BOSS 429 DESIGNS. THE ADVANTAGE OF THE BOSS HAS OVER THE HEMI LIES IN ITS CRESENT SHAPE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. THE CRESENT SHAPE, ANGLES THE FLOW ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST OFF SETTING THE VALVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST SO IT IS NOT STRAIGHT. WHAT THIS DOES IS SLOW DOWN THE FUEL/AIR MIXTURE GIVING IT ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETELY BURN FOR THE MOST EFFICIENT MAXIMUM BURN FOR MAXIMUM POWER. ON THE OTHER HAND THE HEMI DESIGN BEING STRAIGHT THROUGH ACROSS, DOESN'T ALLOW THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE ENOUGH TIME TO FULLY BURN CREATING INEFFICIENCIES. THE CLEVELAND IS OF A SIMILAR DESIGN TO THE BOSS AND THE REASON THE CHEVY "DRCE" DOMINATES OVER THE HEMI FOR MANY YEARS IN PROSTOCK.

      @kenny baird, IN 1970 WAYNE GAPP AND JACK ROUSH CAMPAIGNED A 351 POWERED 1970 PINTO IN PROSTOCK RACING. IT DIDN'T BEAT, BUT OBLITERATED THE COMPETITON. CRY BABY GRUMPING JENKINS (THE BIG CHEATER) WHO CHEVY GUYS LOOK UP TO PROTESTED THE CAR AND THE NHRA (ANOTHER DIVISION OF GM) BANNED IT FROM RACING TO KEEP THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE AS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE THE AMA BAN OF 1957. AS WITH ALL FORD'S THAT DOMINATED RACING THROUGH THE 60'S AND 70'S BOTH IN NHRA AND NASCAR AND LEMANS EITHER BANNED THEM OR USED RULE BOOKS TO GOVERN THEM WHILE THE REST WERE IMMUNE TO THE VERY SAME RULES. IT WAS A COMMON THING TO BAN FORDS IN RACING. THE SMALL BLOCK 289ci WINDSOR WAS HIGHLEY GOVERNED BY RULE BOOKS BY THE NHRA THAT THEY LITERALLY DISAPPEARED FROM DRAG RACING. IN NASCAR THE INLINE SMALLBLOCK FORD WAS DEEMED ILLEGAL FOR USE BACK IN THE 1960'S. THE 289ci HI PO RACE MOTORS IN THE A/FX CLASS RACING IN THE MERCURY COMETS PRODUCED 450HP. ON THE SHORT RACE TRACKS IT WOULD HAVE TOTALLY DOMINATED NASCAR. SO TO LET THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN THEY BANNED THE SMALL BLOCK FORD.

    • @vettekid3326
      @vettekid3326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I wouldn't say that. When I first started driving all cars had points and it wasn't uncommon to have the condenser go bad and leave you on the side of the road or the points to close up from metal transfer. You had to set the gap then the dwell to get to run well, at least for a thousand or two mile before you had to file the points and re do everything.

    • @79tazman
      @79tazman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've played with lot's of points ignitions and never left me stranded I have had HEI's go bad a couple time usually if something with the points you can fix it on the side of the road with Electronics your screwed but when I replaced Points and Condenser I would leave the old working set in the trunk just in case and you can set the dwell close enough with a match book or smoke pack

    • @65Red
      @65Red 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Depends on the quality of the electronics in the HEI distributor. HEI has gotten so popular that a massive amount of "low dollar budget HEI" kits have come out. I'd stay way from every single one of them. Any chevy-style HEI distributor that has the brand listed as Jegs, Summit, Proform, etc are all cheap Chinese made copies of the original design that used subpar internals. My dad and I put a proform HEI distributor on his 350 in his corvette and it worked okay-ish for a while but after the car sat inside the garage for interior work for about 3 months, the mechanical weights had actually seized up. Engine started fine but as soon as we went down the street I could hear significant detonation, which is when I found the mechanical weights locked completely out as if the engine was actually spinning at 3000 rpm. Pulled the distributor out to fix the weights and found the gear had about half the original material left on the teeth. Wasn't due to oiling problems as the cam and the valvetrain showed no such damage and we run zinc additive in the oil for the flat tappet cam. After seeing that, we decided to junk the whole distributor and got a Davis Unified Ignition distributor. Same overall design yet the engine runs miles better now. It idles much smoother than it ever has before and we have yet to see any issues with it.
      Just buy good quality ignition parts and youll never look back. Sure points have that pure mechanical appeal with good HEI, the only downside is the price. But if you consider the ease of tuning, reliable/strong spark, no need for adjustment every few thousand miles, and a cleaner engine bay since the coil is integrated, the price is worth it.

    "The M-code was a high-compression, high-performance variation of the 351C, produced in 1970 and 1971. The M-code engines used the large-port 4V heads with a closed "quench" combustion chamber and large valves.[4] These engines also included cast-aluminum flat-top pistons, stiffer valve springs, a high-performance hydraulic camshaft, and a squarebore Autolite 4300-A carburetor.[1] The 1970 engines were 11.0:1 compression and produced 300 bhp (224 kW; 304 PS) at 5400 rpm." - That quote is from wikipedia, the only 300hp engine listed (gross rating). Is this the engine your client has. Did Ford underate those engines that much? Or or does it have a warmed up cam? If it has a stock cam, the Boss 351 engine must have made around 380 horse, not their advertised rating of 330. What do you think Nick? P.S. I hate oil leaks with a passion.

      Boss 351 was really making close to 400hp according to what stock ones run in the pure stock musclecar drags. Most old Ford musclecar era engines were underrated.

      There were two harmonic balancers for the Clevelands, this one had the better one. (though from my days of keeping cars running from junkyards - I saw that Ford was somewhat random in handing those out) Also a baffled oil pan (also random), and improved rocker arm bearings with a pair of oil grooves (never saw those on regular Clevelands)
      The intake ports are actually a bit too big for the displacement/valve size. (the heads are terrible for street use on the Boss 302!) I built one for my high school car. It really struggled with ignition at low rpm, and so benefited from an MSD mutil-spark ignition and super coil more than any other engine I tried them on. Idle, start, gas mileage and low end torque all improved, though this was with a cam that had enough duration to make the idle very rough at 1100 rpm. It was '88 - pre-Internet and I didn't know you needed to add 1,000 rpm to the low end and 2,000 rpm to the high end of cam specs for the 4V quench heads. I'd intended a somewhat loping 1,500-5,500 rpm cam, got a 2,500-7,000 result. I just wish highschool me could have afforded a roller cam, as the manifold vacuum was so low the Holley I had didn't meter well. The power valve system doesn't work well if the idle vacuum is below 8.

    Great job Nick! I'm looking for a 351 Cleveland to do a stock or mild build for my 1968 Cougar. I would love to have the 351 horsepower your motor made. What year was that motor? I have found one near me, the owner says its a 1971 351C High Output out of a Mark 1 mustang. The block number is D2AE-CA. I asked him the remove a valve cover and give me the head number. It would be great to know more about the motor you built so I could be sure to get around the same horse power! Did you figure out where the oil was coming from? Thanks John M.

    NICK saw something he didn't like. It was the big BLUE OVAL on the valve cover because Nick loves NOPARS!
    This engine would easily make another 20HP if it was twisted to 6200rpm. Back in the day it was proven that FORD under estimated the HP on all their High Performance engines.

    Hey I used to have one of those sitting in a 71 Torino. Was only a two barrel though. But I do know that the stock 4 barrel versions did have larger ported heads than the two barrel ones. Kinda makes me wonder if those are the two or 4 barrel heads on yours. This "wide block", was the perfect engine to build old 74 to 78 Mustang II's with. I had 4 of them back in the day. I can tell you that the oil pump went out on mine at one time while I was driving. But, the distributer had a tiny pin that was designed to break incase the oil pleasure got low enough in order to stop the engine without damaging it by cutting distributer power. Did you check those other distributers for that safety pin?

    If I suspected rear main seal leak (or any oil leak not related to dyno fittings), the first thing I would have done is hook up the PCV to eliminate crankcase pressure. I'm surprised a seasoned veteran like Nick wouldn't have tried that first.

      @nickpanaritis4122 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marcmielhausen1971. I am very well aware of crankcase pressure build up. PCV valve was working, and also the breather was OK also. And yes, it was a Dyno fitting at the rear of the engine, just under the rag.

    • @marcmielhausen1971
      @marcmielhausen1971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, but I can see in the video that the PCV valve isn't connected to manifold vacuum and the other crankcase vent isn't connected to an air breather (venturi vacuum). I'm glad it was something simple and that is definitely one stout engine you've built.
