I feel that Plastic Beach is the album with some of Gorillaz’s most well known songs (Stylo, Rhinestone Eyes, On Melancholy Hill) but it also has some of their deepest cuts (White Flag, Some Kind Of Nature, Orchestral Intro, etc.). This track took me forever to actually enjoy. Now it has to be one of the best off of Plastic Beach, for me at least.
Completely agree with you, it took me a LONG time for me to love this song but it’s so great. I can’t explain why it aged so well for me but I understand what you’re saying.
This song is all about two pirates fighting in the sea, bit then both realizes that they are tired and make the peace just to relax and enjoy the beach.
Gorillaz are a very unique band. With every album, their sound changes. It takes a few runthroughs of the album to really appreciate it. Personally, I absolutely love the new album. For some people it'll take a while to get used to, but for the rest of us, this is truly wonderful music.
"This is it, white sound, blue sea/But I don't know who they are/And I'm DAMN sure they don't know me/But I come in peace." Philosophy of the year, brah.
I finally understand the gravity of this song. Its implications at the time, how materialism created plastic beaches and climate change, but you'd rather escape there than live in "society".
It's peace and love, while standing in a trash heap floating in the sea. It's the kind of moment where everything's fucked and there's nothing you can do about it, so why make it worse? Grab a drink, take a seat next to some discarded syringes, and enjoy the sunshine.
